Chat Night Guest: Thomas Hassan On Saturday August 28, 1999 11AM PST Edited by Anne-Mal You can e-mail Thomas at: [email protected] In a change of pace, the guest is in the room first! (Thomas) Hi! *Looking around the room, waiting for the audience* (*Anne-Mal) Hello! (Thomas) Hmmm soemthing on mz kezboard here is fishz! (*Anne-Mal) For some reason everyone comes late, so don't worry! (Thomas) Arrgh! American keyboard... (*Anne-Mal) I doubt that members of the TSA knew of this chat! (Thomas) Probably not. (Regal) Anne, did Bashful ever figure out who Honi Muffin was last night? (*Anne-Mal) No, still has no clue! (Regal) *Chuckle* (*Anne-Mal) Do you need a different type of keyboard for this chat Thomas? (Thomas) Anne, this applet assumes an American kezboard. (I`ll appear to have an accent ...) (Regal) This should be interesting! (Troy) Sounds like it. (Thomas) *Smiles* (Troy) I always wished you could write more Thomas, I have always enjoyed what you wrote! (Thomas) Troy, I'm trying to, but time isn't easy to come by. I am writing a bit, but not a lot is ready for primetime. (Troy) Not true! (Thomas) *Smiles again* I will write the great transformation novel some day though ;) (Troy) We need one! (TH) *Nods* Someday... ;) (*Anne-Mal) Do you mind saying what country your typing from? (Thomas) Not at all, I am a German, living in exile in Austria! (*Anne-Mal) Austria? Gee, for some reason I thought you were in New Zealand! Silly me! + TH has arrived. (TH) I am trying a different Java engine. Ahhh! That's better! (*Anne-Mal) I think that proves that you're a programmer Thomas! Editor's Note- As you can tell, Thomas is now using TH. (Troy) Definitely! (TH) *Smiles* Well, I know many people confuse Austria with Australia, but New Zealand is new to me! ;) (Regal) Here comes the crowd, Thomas! :) (TH) *Watches as the room fills* That's good, at least I won't be preaching to the empty choir! (*Anne-Mal) Thomas, about how many languages can you read? (TH) Anne, I only read/write/speak two languages: German and English (three if you count Bavarian. ;) (*Anne-Mal) I'll count it! I am amazed!! (TH) I can decipher and guess at French, Italian and Dutch, which is good for making sense out of some comics, but that's it. (Regal) How did you like your visit to America? I really hate I wasn't able to make it to Phil's place. (TH) Regal, the trip was fun and the bash was a very good time! Editor's Note- Members of the TSA have been having real life get togethers for awhile. (TH) *Counting the seconds* ;) (Mindy) Thomas, are you still using Frontier scripting to run your site? (TH) Yes, Mindy, I'm still using Frontier, but I'm working on something to replace it, as I don't like the license terms. (and it's too slow for me...) (*Anne-Mal) Okay let's start! Our featured guest today is Thomas Hassan! Creator of the Transformation Story Archive or the TSA! (Regal) *Clap* *Clap* *Clap* (TH) *Stands up for a moment and takes a bow* (*Anne-Mal) Many of the authors of Fictionmania got their start from the TSA! And the TSA paved the way for the various web sites that exist today! (TH) Hi all. It's nice being invited here. I love the fact that we now have dozens of sites to read our favourite stories. *Smiles and sits down again, waiting for the questions* (*Anne-Mal) So I guess the obvious question is why did you start it? (TH) Why? Well, I loved transformations for as long as I can remember. When I first discovered the web and the internet in 1994 (yes, I'm a latecomer) the first word I searched for was 'transformation'. There was no site for the stories, so when I got the chance in may 95, I simply took what I had collected and opened up the TSA! And then I got feedback, tons of feedback and the site grew and grew and I was happy. ;) (HerPony) Thomas, I'm on the TSA list and was wondering.. do you have a lot of conflict between those who want to read TG versus those who only want human-animal transformations? (TH) HerPony, I hate that conflict. I personally enjoy both and all and find it easy enough to ignore stories that I don't like. I also tend to come down harsh on those who raise that topic. I know there are several subcultures that meet in the TSA, but I hope to have something for all! I hope to have a peaceable middle ground for all. (Mindy) You say you enjoy both types of stories, but do you have a favorite type of story you like to read? (TH) *Blush* ;) Yes, I do have that reputation of liking horse TFs and it's not wrong! ;) What I like most are stories where the transformation is a serious handicap or obstacle that the hero has to overcome. Which means I'm not so hot on the wish-fulfillment or on the 'and he forgot he ever was different' stories. I want a fully plotted story with a beginning a conflict and a resolution. In short, a good story, but that of course is hard to define. (Jenny) You have seen animal, TG and inanimate object transforms, has there been anything that's really surprised you? Something where you went, "gee, I never even *thought* of that..." (TH) Well, the animated sofa in one of Mark Gooley's stories was a bit of a surprise for me, otherwise, no. Jenny, it doesn't really matter, as long as there is a conflict and a story. '*Bamf* You become something and you are happy or sad' never does anything for me. (HerPony) Do you like stories that concentrate on the transformation itself or would you be interested where the story almost exclusively revolves around the after-affects of being transformed? (TH) HerPony, I want a story where the transformation is the major plot point, but that does not mean it has to be on camera prominently. I do like Mark van Scivers TBP stuff, e.g. where the transformation is long past, yet still important. Editor's Note- TBP is The Blind Pig, a story universe on the TSA. (Mindy) When I belonged to your list ages ago, (to much to keep up with, so I dropped), Posti and Jack DeMule used to write stories almost in a personal battle with each other. It was a fun read what these two wrote! (TH) *Nods* (Mindy) Has that type of writing ever returned to your list? (TH) *Sighs* Rarely. Some times it still happens, but it is a bigger list now and one of the drawbacks of that is that it's not as cozy anymore. (Mindy) You mean sometimes the list members get too serious and not playful like these two. (TH) Yes. At the moment we do have a few writers who take it terribly seriously. But fun still happens. As a side effect, the various chat options like #tsa_list and #transformations on IRC or the Altered Realities Muck have taken up some of the 'playtime'. So the 'free-for-all' tends to happen there more, as the list is more and more the central but no longer the only place. I personally am not completely happy about that, but I realize it's simply a natural development. Editor's Note-IRC is Internet Relay Chat. (Mindy) Yep, if you ever figure how to make it cozy again, let me know! (TH) *Smiles* I will. ;) But I seriously think it won't happen that way. But I'm sure the list in a year or two will be completely different again. (*Anne-Mal) Many of the famous authors here on Fictionmania got their start from the TSA. Did you ever feel that you would be inspiring so many authors to write? (TH) No! Absolutely not! I was flabbergasted when the first people sent me their stories and even more when some told me they had started to write only because the TSA. It was a strange feeling to read for the first time 'Dear Mr. Hassan, Would you consider this...' (And of course a big shot into the ego. ;) I am glad and a little proud of that. And even happier for all the nice stories I get every day out of that. (P.S. I do hope to see a novel in the bookstores dedicated to the TSA someday!) ;) (*Anne-Mal) Do you think it is because you are so open? You accept all transformation stories without exception! (TH) Maybe, yes. I think before the TSA, the various kinds of stories stayed in their subgroups and those interested in the stories rarely met. 'Transformation' as a genre in itself wasn't defined. Now it is and we get slowly get stories that play with and expand the borders of the genre. I do hope to grow the thing for another few years until it is really large enough to have a solid momentum. Then I may be giving up the TSA, (or rather pass it on), but don't count on this happening before 2015! ;) (*Anne-Mal) I notice that the TSA encourages authors to try and write stories beyond their interest. (TH) Some authors in the TSA have written *very* different stories. Even Stephanie of "DNA" fame wrote a horse TF and Bill Hart wrote some animal stories. I think it's a sign of a good author that they doesn't limit themself. (And some authors have written *very* good stories with nary a transformation at all.) I am a voracious reader and an open reader and I hope the TSA reflects that and encourages authors to look beyond the rim of their soup-pot! (HerPony) You mentioned you'd like to see a novel in the bookstores dedicated to the TSA, do you know of any novels seriously in progress that were, at least in part, inspired from the TSA? (TH) Yes and no. I know of novels in the circles of the TSA writers that may some day be published. I don't know of anything that has a chance to be in a bookstore soon. :/ *Smiles* I'd love to know, so if you do, tell me ;) (CarrieGore) TH, do you have any advice for TG authors who fancy writing an animal TF story? It's not something I've read much of, to be honest! (TH) Oh! Big and difficult question! *Takes a deep breath* For one thing, don't be afraid nor intimidated. It's not that much different. There is a little more research needed. Most people *know* where breast would grow or a penis and what part of the original body was the equivalent. In animals it's a bit harder, (And no, knees don't bend backwards, that's the ankles). ;) And of course the limitations and the conflict is different. In a TG story you play with societal roles. And if you look at it closely, it's much more a behaviour change story than a body change story. A animal transform imposes biological roles. You can carry on as you did before, if you're suddenly a woman. There may be legal troubles, friends may get lost, but ultimately you can continue your life, if we ignore the bimbo curse for now. As an animal, you can't go to work again, if you suddenly have hooves. Even communication may be cut off. So the hurdle for the hero to overcome is much harder. In a sense it's a more complete bondage than a 'sex-slave' curse or one of the other staples. So, you probably have to be careful to not simply make it a 'snuff' story. i.e. 'The horse nickered and forgot it ever was a man.' That's as good as if you had killed the protagonist. But a hero who fights against the circumstances and tries to work with what he has, is a fascinating read. Try "Shell Game" on the TSA for a story along those lines. It's good, not only because I'm the hero! ;) (CarrieGore) Wow! That's quite an answer! Thanks. (Jenny) I've often heard that it's difficult for an author to get published, but it seems like there's more and more amateur fiction popping up on the net. Do you think the TSA helps budding authors to "cut their teeth" by getting feedback without fear of rejection? (TH) I'm not completely sure. Yes, for one, it's easy to put one's stories before an audience now. The problem is feedback. There is very little feedback that applies *hard* standards. (*Anne-Mal) (I think I have heard this before!) (TH) In part, that's the author's fault. They may feel attacked when somebody *does* read a story with *hard* standards. We have such a discussion right now on TSA-Talk. To be frank, in the TSA as it is now, there are 550 stories. I think *maybe* 5 of them could meet professional standards and would be candidates for print. On the other hand, I have a few authors who *may* be ready for salable writing some day, if they keep it up and don't fall in the 'I'm already good' trap. I fully expect to see books in print by some of the TSA authors but not soon. (*Anne-Mal) Now this is not to be confused with TSA-Talk, which is an e-mail list which has thousands of stories! (TH) Oh, sure. (I call the website usually 'the TSA proper'.) (Jenny) So what's the best way for getting "hard" criticism? (TH) For one, ask people face to face or in a chat if possible. Hope that you get slaughtered by Keith Morrison or ask me on the next bash! Very few people *dare* to give hard criticism. It has partly become bad form to say 'the story suffered from that and that and that'. And *don't* ask for "constructive" criticism. That's asking for the kid gloves and the patpat-treatment. Ask for tearing apart, for drowning your story in a sea of red ink. Then maybe you will get something good and usable back. And after that, write and write again, never lose faith in your will and ability to tell a story. (*Anne-Mal) Is it because Keith Morrison is a published writer? (TH) No, Keith just has opened a website called 'The Slaughterhouse' where he mercilessly reviews stories and while it takes a bit of gulping and humility to swallow what he says, he's usually at east close to the mark. (*Anne-Mal) That is interesting, 'constructive' criticism means kid gloves. I assume that this is from experience on the TSA? (TH) I think so. I usually only hear the words 'constructive criticism' from those who take offense when somebody tells them the story was bad and why. Interestingly enough, the writers seriously interested in the craft never balk at being handled roughly. My wife is a writer too. When she was in the final stages of her first novel, she gave it to a few friends to read. To everyone the same copy, gave them all differently colored pens and asked them to write in the margin whatever they thought. It worked very well and I think it's a good method. (*Anne-Mal) We have heard comments that the TSA is too cozy, everyone is too friendly for any real criticism. (TH) On the list people usually are too friendly, yes, but not without reasons. Many of those who write are *very* touchy and the 'reasonable' people usually don't want to get involved in any kind of fracas (*Anne-Mal) Let me open this now for a free-for-all! Remember that Thomas is still the center of attention! (TH) *Twiddles his thumbs* ;) (Jenny) Do you think that since transformation is still a niche subject, it's harder to get proper feedback? (i.e., if you're dealing with a small group of authors, don't dismiss anybody entirely?) (TH) Jenny, maybe. Mostly it's because we're all amateurs. And usually you handle somebody professing to be an amateur more gently. (Which I personally think is not good, but can't change.) I confess I rarely give feedback either. I'm far to busy usually. :/ (*Anne-Mal) How do you feel about the various universes spawned by the TSA? (TH) *Big sigh* I'm no friend of 'the universe' in general. It tends to get stuck in a rut and in in-jokes and references. (*Anne-Mal) To hard for some one new to get involved? (TH) I have made the public decision, not to accept stories from shared settings for the TSA, unless they are reasonably self-contained and very well written. In fact I tend to be far more selective in terms of quality than with stories that stand on their own. Some shared settings have generated *very good* stories, "The Blind Pig" comes to mind. (*Anne-Mal) How about SRU stories, which are possibly the most popular universe here? (TH) SRU is more of a shared MacGuffin and a nice mechanism to get a quickie written. It's not really a shared setting (sue) Thomas, just curious, but there used to be a way to see all the stories posted via the mailing list on the web. Any particular reason why that capability went away? (TH) It's still there. It just moved when the list moved. (*Anne-Mal) You have to belong to the list to see it. (TH) (sue) Thanks!. (TH) t0 hosted the TSA for four years until they couldn't afford it anymore because I ate half to two-thirds of their bandwidth. They called me up to tell me that the TSA was costing them $2000 every month and that they regretted to have to ask me to move. (sue) Yes..it used to be t0, then it "disappeared", that was about the time Fictionmania was getting active and the TG stories seemed to flow over here. (*Anne-Mal) Would you welcome TG stories that have a transformation theme that are posted on Fictionmania for the TSA or TSA-Talk? (TH) Sure I welcome TG. I'm just, well, picky. I have, I think, 5 TG stories earmarked for the next update which should be done soon unless *Real Life* intervenes. I probably won't accept an SRU quickie and many of the Fictionmania stories are too much a 'stroke vehicle', but well-written TG? Gimme! (Jenny) Do you find it difficult to maintain the web site and keep up with the stories on the list? (I know I've certainly had that problem lately.) (TH) Yes, it is difficult. At the moment for instance I'm busy with a lot of jobs (I'm a freelancer) and am rotating, but I still enjoy doing it. (And sometimes I even read every post to TSA-talk.) ;) (*Anne-Mal) So you feel that the TSA takes the best from TSA-Talk? (TH) Not only from there. I don't 'graze' anymore, but accept submissions and quite a few good stories come from outside TSA-talk. But yes, I do hope to have 'the best' of TSA-talk. (And if you ever meet 'the Professor' tell him to submit his Ovid stories!) (*Anne-Mal) He is supposed to be having a chat next month, I will tell him! (Mindy) The professor is amazing! :) (TH) *Nods* He is a very fine writer, though I would like to see a horse someday in one of his stories. ;) I enjoy his stories very much. (sue) Thomas, I must go, but thank you for your time and starting the TSA list. Many good things have flowed from your efforts! (Mindy) Anne-Mal, did you promise Thomas a bale of hay for being here today? (TH) *Grins at Mindy* (*Anne-Mal) With your budget Mom, all I could do is just promise! What are some of your favorite books? (TH) Oh! Now I have to confess, eh? Only one of them is TF-related. ;) "The Egghead Republic" by Arno Schmidt. (and all by him in fact.) If you can find it, get it. Anything by D. Coupland. He's a great writer Ian M. Banks. For sheer chuzpa and style. I also read the SF digests monthly , a lot of short fiction. I like Sterling and oh, I forget all the names... (and of course everything by Jack Chalker as a guilty pleasure ;) (*Anne-Mal) I think everyone reads Jack Chalker! (TH) *Grins* (Jenny) I was wondering when Chalker's name was going to come up. ;-) (TH) Actually, and this is something I hope to germinate in the long run on the list, I like his stories most when he shows us transformed *societies*, not just individuals. I'd love to see a tour through the fluxlands, for instance (*Anne-Mal) I agree. No one seems to write about the long term effects of a change on either list! (TH) *Nods* I will post a public 'challenge' for want of a better word, to the TSA proper and I will add a department for that, hopefully to attract stories. *Leans back and accepts a glass of water* (Regal) I have to go, but the chat was very informative, Thomas. Thank you once again for TSA. When I first got on the internet, I searched for Transformations also! For me, the TSA was there! :) (*Anne-Mal) What do you think of the Fictionmania site and TG Fiction list? (TH) Err, would you believe I'm not subscribed? I was on Nostrumo's list and somehow never managed to switch subscriptions. *Hides in shame* ;) (*Anne-Mal) Well, you only have so much time! (TH) If Mindy would tell me where to subscribe I might even mange to do so. ;) (Mindy) I have a hard enough time with e-mail traffic, I can't even keep up with it all, a lot less then the TSA list however (TH) *Nods* Well I have a good mail client with lots of filters. I usually read the other lists on quiet afternoons (Mindy) Yes, thank the person that invented e-mail filters! (TH) *Subscribed* Oh, yes! I would be shot without filters. Webmaster talk: Mindy, what do you use for the site? (Mindy) Webstar, that is the main server. Fictionmania is spread over 3 G3's Webcatalog is the data base engine. (TH) *Smiles* I would love even one G3! ;) Webcatalog, I need to have a look at that. never seen it! (Mindy) There are now 6 servers in the Fictionmania/Maniapages farm, 2 imacs. One for e-mail and downloads, the other for the list and server monitoring software. (TH) *Wow* I hack away on my aging 5400 ;) And the list and the TSA are on a UNIX machine somewhere in Colorado I think. ;) (*Anne-Mal) This info won't help ping attacks will it? (Mindy) No, a firewall stops the ping attacks. I can not wait for a MAC OSX! Maybe next March! Now it just tosses off the pings, filtering the ping attack logs to one mail box. I look at them now and then. (TH) I have promised my wife an ibook for Xmas and after that I will get me a blue-white. You had some trouble I remember, did you ever find the guilty parties? (Mindy) Yes a person in North Carolina. (TH) What did you do with him? (Mindy) I reported him to att.net, took probably 6 e-mails between us to get them kicked off! It was a pain to get it down. And after that one I have never forced the issues on the others (TH) *Nods* Did he give any reason why he did it? (Mindy) I never heard from the person. (TH) *Sigh* Stupid persons! (Mindy) It was getting att.net to acknowledge it was even happening was the hard part, even sending them multi logs did not help. Finally I got them to monitor this person and they caught them. (TH) *Blinks* Why? What did they say? (Mindy) They were nervous that I might be sending in a false complaint! This happened between this last Xmas and New Years, their there staff was on the low side. I think if they would not have had so many people out it would have happened faster. (TH) *Nods* Probably and some may have recognized the significance earlier. Would you be very disappointed if I'd go soon, I would love to get some sleep! ;) (Mindy) No problem! This is your chat and it is late over there! (TH) OK, Thanks to you all for having me here! Listening and asking. (*Anne-Mal) So with all the problems, has it been worth it? (TH) Anne, the TSA? Oh sure! I have met very nice people through it and gotten a lot of very nice stuff to read. ;) (Mindy) *Snicker* By running a site you get to read lots of stories before anyone else! :) (TH) Mindy, exactly! ;) I enjoyed this very much. (Jenny) Me too! Thanks Thomas! (*Anne-Mal) I have to ask one last question! (TH) Ask, Anne! (*Anne-Mal) You on the TSA have real get togethers, meeting in real life. Would you recommend it? (TH) Yes. I enjoyed the bash very much. It was a nice relaxed social event, there was time for idle chat and for serious discussion. Yes I'd recommend it, but only if you can keep it social and not slide into 'commercial convention' territory. There is always a danger meeting people in *REAL LIFE*, whom you only know electronically, but for the TSA and me it was definitely worth it! (*Anne-Mal) How many were at the bash? (TH) There were 50 people on this bash and I guess it will grow! (*Anne-Mal) WOW! (Mindy) Yikes! 50 people! (Mindy) One last question, would you rather be a stallion or a mare Thomas? :) (TH) *Thinks* (Mindy) Or maybe a gelding? :) (TH) Probably a stallion.. ;) A mare is tempting and I could live with being a gelding. (Although not that well!) I *am* interested in TG and if I had the option I'd go for it for a few years. ;) (*Anne-Mal) Do you have any closing comments Thomas? (TH) No, Just that I enjoyed it and that I hope you won't lose hope at the very irregular intervals in which the TSA is updated. ;) Good Night, all and have a nice evening and weekend! (*Anne-Mal) Thank you very much for showing up! (Jenny) Thanks again! (Mindy) Thanks a ton Thomas, I enjoyed this! (TH) Thanks all again and Good-Bye! End of Chat

Betsys JourneyChapter 6 A Love Affair With Thomas Continues with Susan

Betsy rushed back to her spare bedroom wanting to finish the chapter, 'A Thomas Affair.' She recalled it was late October when they returned from Atlantic City. Thomas had told her all about Ted and explained, as best he could, about how much he relied on the business from Ted's company. Apparently Ted was so pleased after the weekend getaway that he set the wheels in motion to upgrade the pharmacy section of his company, which meant big money for Thomas. Strange what men were willing to...

When Misty showed up at one of the local association meetings Thomas belonged to, he was full of lust for her immediately. She was very beautiful. She was dark skinned. She was Asian and Afro-American, with gorgeous results. She had long straight coal black hair and beautiful smooth silky skin. Her eyes were brown but very bright and she had a beautiful smile with a heart shaped face that would make your heart stop when she smiled. Her body was spectacular. The thing he noticed right away was...

Thomas meets Misty part II

Misty and Thomas finally fell asleep in each other’s arms around four am. Thomas woke up at about eight am and had to piss so badly he wasn’t sure he would make it to the bathroom. He rolled over from Misty’s warm body and ran into the bathroom to relieve his needs. While he was in there he showered and used her razor to shave. He wrapped a towel around his waist and came back into the bedroom. He saw Misty lying on her back in the big bed still sound asleep. His cum was gone from her stomach,...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 4 Wedding Bells

January 1808 One of Mrs. Pelham’s servants was waiting for Wolverine‘s officers at the quay to guide them to her house where their hostess greeted them effusively. “Welcome, gentlemen, and thank you for accepting my invitation!” “On behalf of myself and my officers, I thank you for hosting our celebration,” Benning answered. “May I present Commander Eckleson, Master’s Mates Wainbridge and Warner, and Mishipmen Boyle, Prideaux and Pons? The Thomas Household Part Two Marla and Eva

It was hard to paint with thoughts of that afternoon coursing through my brain. I couldn’t believe what I had done, or how badly I’d been fooled. I resented Kayla and Eva, but I resented my naiveté even more. I had played right into their hands. Sucker indeed. I started my cleanup routine a while before three, having completely forgotten that Marla had asked me to stay late. The earlier ordeal had all but suppressed any further thoughts about her, except to consider her a stern authority...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 32 A Spectre from the Past

December 1813 “Good morning, Sir Thomas! It’s past four bells, wind nor’easterly, ship’s still hove-to under double reefed tops’ls, flagship in sight to South!” That was Bartleby, waking his captain with a short report, freshly gathered on the quarterdeck, as had been his custom for the past four years. Thomas forced himself awake, acutely aware of the cold that permeated his sleeping cabin, made even worse by the damp bedding. It was a miserable and wet winter in the Mediterranean, and...

The feminization of Thomas

Shirley Braithwaite was not a happy woman. Having just turned the wrong side of 40 she was happily married for the past 19 years to her school sweetheart Brian. The marriage had produced 4 children, Sarah who was 18 and Zoe who had just turned 16. The other 2 children were Alexander who was 15 and the youngest child being Thomas who was 12 years old. Mrs Braithwaite was not happy because like most mothers she wanted a daughter who would be a girly girl, someone who enjoyed...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 33 HMS Clyde

January 1814 It was impossible not to fall in love with his new ship immediately. As HM sloop Lark approached the large frigate, Thomas drank in the lines of the hull, the rake of her masts, and the excellent shape. Clearly, her previous captain had spent a considerable amount of his own money on the ship. From the gilded carvings around her stern windows to the masterfully applied paintwork the ship showed the affluence of her former captain. Lt. Warden hove to a cable length from HMS...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 34 No Rest for the Wicked May 1814

HMS Clyde was lying at anchor in a balmy breeze, swaying gently in the minuscule waves. Around her were the other ships of the Mediterranean Fleet, all anchored securely in the Port of Toulon, the main port of the French marine. A few weeks ago, Clyde and her consorts would have faced red-hot shots being fired at them, but Toulon was now a city of King Louis XVIII of France.  All along the coast, merchantmen of all sizes poured out of the French ports where they had been blockaded,...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 20 Cleaning Ship

January, 1813 The brig Darlington had been specifically built for transporting passengers and mail. She was under government contract to connect Plymouth and Gibraltar, and her passenger quarters were purpose-built and more than adequate. Thomas had his own cabin whilst Mirabel and Florence shared the adjoining one. Other passengers included an Army major, two Navy lieutenants on their way to new appointments, and the wife of a Gibraltar ship chandler returning from visiting relatives in...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 21 Wakeup Call

February 1813 Three days later, with the last repairs finished and the last stores stowed away, Unicorn was ready to sail in the morning. After one last evening ashore and a delightful farewell offered by the lovely Florence, Thomas had come aboard late, but he was up before the first light to supervise the weighing of the anchor. Unicorn and Dido would sail together on their return to the fleet, always with an eye on catching some blockade runner. Dido was riding her anchor two cable...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 30 A Threat

Petitioning the Acting Governor went well. Yet, His Excellency was planning another soirée four days hence and would not pass on the chance to invite the Greys, if only to count two more members of the fair sex amongst his guests – namely Mirabel and Florence. Thomas and Mirabel accepted without hesitation for they both relished the thought of debuting as husband and wife, and Florence agreed reluctantly after conferring with Mr. Darby. On the day before the soirée – Unicorn was finally...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 2 Midshipman Feb 1806

HMS Wolverine was holding her position to windward of a small convoy of eight sail headed from Kingston to London. On her quarter deck, a very nervous watch officer was constantly checking her course, the wind, the trim of the sails and the horizon beyond the convoy. Mr. Midshipman Thomas Grey was entrusted with the watch for the first time, and a more conscientious watch officer would not be found in the entire Royal Navy. On the outward journey to Kingston, Wolverine had escorted four Navy...

Priscilla And I School Thomas

My forty-year-old wife, Priscilla, can’t keep her hands off of young boys. Her latest target is the sixteen-year-old lad, Thomas, who cuts our grass. He usually works shirtless, dressed in denim cutoffs, sneakers and no socks. He’s about five-ten, slim, slightly muscular, blond hair and rather handsome. When he shows up to do our yard my wife will call him in to the kitchen so that she can apply sun block before he starts.“We can’t have you getting sunburned,” she tells him.Prior to his arrival...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 36 Paying Off

(June 1814) When HMS Clyde cast anchor in the bay of Valetta, the other ships of their small squadron had already returned. Whilst behind them the captured Jenny Girl, flying the Blue Ensign over her American flag, also dropped her anchor, Thomas watched another ship with interest. She was a large frigate, larger than Clyde, with 14 main deck gun ports and longer by at least 20 feet. Thomas guessed her to be a two-decker that had been razeed to a single gun deck, a procedure that was being...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 37 In Society

(August 1814) The breakfast table at the Bennings’ house was filled a little more on the next morning. Melinda Curry sat opposite Thomas and Mirabel, between Florence and Teresa, and tried to blend in. Her two companions, also invited to share the bounty of the table, had refused in shock. Captain Curry may have treated them with consideration, but they had still been working for their livelihood. Now they hovered around Melinda, making certain that she was dressed and groomed to advantage,...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 10 Tempest

Autumn, 1809 Over the next week, Sultan stayed at anchor waiting for orders to proceed further upstream for the planned attack on Antwerp. There were rumours that the commander in chief of the land forces, the Earl of Chatham, was delaying the decision whilst Sir Richard Strachan wanted to press the attack. Both nullified the other’s authority, and the result was that no action was taken. By late August, after the French had had time enough to shore up their defences of Antwerp, Chatham...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 11 Convoy duty

Winter 1809/10 On the next morning, a boat from the shore brought two huddled figures in boat cloaks who turned out to be Mr. Paul Courtland and Mr. Erasmus James, recent graduates of the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth, who reported for duty in Tempest. Neither of them had been to sea before. Thomas received them in his cabin and studied their papers. Somebody in the Admiralty must have been possessed of a grim sense of humour, or perhaps they expected him to be more tolerant towards the...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 19 Unlikely Friends

December, 1812 When Bartleby returned three days later, it was to inform his captain that he had been able to reserve cabin accommodation on a sturdy brig headed for Penzance, via Plymouth, to weigh anchor in a week. Thus, after bidding farewell to neighbours and friends, Thomas and Mirabel, with Bartleby, left Guildford on the post chaise four days later. Mirabel was a little apprehensive, but she smiled bravely enough when they boarded the coach. The journey to Portsmouth was uneventful,...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 8 Losing it

Jan 1809 Thomas was resting on his bed in The George and Serpent Inn. The inn was located at a convenient distance from the Admiralty where he would report in the morning. Mr. Egerton had indeed given him transport to London, but had not extended an invitation to stay at his house. One reason might have been the interest that Mrs. Egerton had shown in Thomas on that long coach ride. It was quite clear that Mr. Egerton did not trust any man in the presence of his cherished young wife. Thomas...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 12 Reward

March, 1812 It must have been his 10th time in over two years of sighting the Mediterranean Fleet Thomas thought idly as he timed his next manoeuvre carefully. As usual, Tempest carried the mail for the Commander in Chief, and that set the priorities. No sooner had Tempest settled on a course a cable length athwart from the flagship than his gig splashed into the water, and then he was racing down the Jacob’s ladder with the mail bag. Only five minutes later saw him on the quarter deck...

One day later, Thomas received the special marriage licence from his Excellency, General Campbell. The aide-de-camp granted them the use of the Convent Garden for the reception, and the wedding was planned for three days later. The list of guests invited from Thomas’s side was short and included the officers of Unicorn and Dido, the port admiral and the helpful aide-de-camp. Mirabel invited a few gentlemen and ladies of her acquaintance, and of course Angela and Florence. In total, no more...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 39 Monies

(August 1814) The dinner in the Clyde‘s cabin had been quite a success, not the least due to the fact that Captain Fortescue had excused his wife who was apparently suffering badly from the migraine. Nobody believed this, but then nobody was sorry, least of all Captain Fortescue who turned out to be a charming and sociable man. The talk at the table ranged from past deeds on board the Clyde to the situation in the small German dominion of which Sir August was the sovereign ruler again....

(August 1814) Mr. Augustus Leeds was of small build, with a shiny bald pate that reflected the candle lights in the entrance hall of his imposing city house. The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 16 Bad tidings

October, 1812 After two weeks of cruising along the Spanish coast, Dido finally caught up with Commodore Clancy’s squadron near Tarragona. The squadron shortened sail to allow Dido to join, and before the night fell, Thomas had delivered the documents from the Gibraltar prize court to Clancy. Clancy had obviously overcome his consternation, and he employed Dido in a forward position as the frigates swept along the coast in a north-easterly direction. It was Dido that cut off a French...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 28 Reunited

September 1813 It took another four days before Unicorn and her consorts sailed for Gibraltar. The superintendent of the armoury agreed to return her previous ordnance of six-pounder long guns and 32-pounder carronades, six apiece. The carronades on the quarter deck had made her too top-heavy for Thomas’s taste. There was also a dinner at the Civil Commissioner’s residence to which the Navy officers were invited. The three frigate captains had to recount the action against the Berber...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 40 Visitors

(September 1814) Under its spanker gaff, the barge was slightly lying over to lee as it made its way upriver, easing things for the tow horses. They had passed the new lock at Teddington, completed only three years earlier, and were now approaching the even newer Sunbury lock. Thomas stood on the deck and watched the progress of the craft with mild professional interest. Excepting his journey from Bristol to Guildford almost six years before, he’d had no experience with river navigation, let...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 15 Getting Rich

Summer, 1812 Leaving Plymouth and Florence did not come easy to Thomas. Over the last three days of their stay, Thomas had spent every free minute with the young woman. On the last day, Florence had been miserable. Upon gentle probing, Thomas found out that she was disheartened over returning to her place of work in Corbley’s Revue. Having grown extremely fond of the girl but also under pressure to weigh anchor on the next morning, Thomas found a temporary solution. In a boarding house run...

Thomas Lends A Needed Presence

Thomas sat on his couch feeling confused and quite strange. Other feelings were going on, but his confusion was overwhelming. He sat back on the couch trying to make heads or tails as he remembered. To his own surprise, he felt his cock stir. He brushed his hand across it and felt it hardening. He wasn’t sure what it meant, but when he squeezed it through his shorts, it felt good, really fucking good! The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 7 Local hero

December 1808 With only three days left before Christmas, Thomas rode into Guildford on the next morning. He desperately needed new uniforms. The ones he had brought with him were by now three years old and a tight fit on his fully grown figure. He had never been able to have new coats tailored, never staying in one port long enough. He found the tailor’s shop where his old coats had been made and was measured for a new set and six new breeches. Shirts and cravats were also on his list, as...

November, 1812 After a quick repast, Thomas had a horse saddled for himself and set out to visit one of the tenants, one George Hanson, who worked a 60-acre parcel of land towards Horsley with his son. Hanson had been boatswain in Cormorant, and Thomas’s father had given him a tenancy when the old ship was broken up in ‘04. Hanson had taught the young Thomas seamanship, and of all the tenants he could be trusted the most. The ride was two miles over the small lanes of the different estates,...

The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 22 Sardinia

March 1813 Commodore Harold Hastings was a gracious host. He had welcomed each of his captains in person at the port, together with Captain Benning, and then led them aft to where his cabin had been prepared for the guests. He had been a successful frigate captain, and the quality of the foods and wines bore witness to his affluence. Northumberland was 15 years old, of 1900 tons burthen, carrying 32-pounders on her main deck and 18-pounders on the upper deck. She was one of the better 74s...

Seven days after arriving at Sant’Antioco, the British ships weighed anchor with three of the prizes. The other xebecs had to be burnt, being far too damaged by Unicorn and Northumberland’s broadsides to be restored to seaworthiness. Dido was not joining them. She needed a replacement of her lower mizzen mast and was sailing straight for Gibraltar. She carried Mr. Treleven as passenger who had returned from the shore with a violent fever, no doubt caused by one of the dreaded agues that...

Then the first boats began to disembark the freed slaves. A crowd assembled on the quay to watch and cheer both rescued and rescuers, and then a military band appeared on...

September 1813 The weather, being inclement already, took a turn for the worse on the next day. Thomas was quite happy about this since it would make things easier for Rourke and his volunteers. (May 1814) Thomas was pacing on his quarterdeck just so he could have a diversion and get out of his cabin. It was already quite hot during the noon hours in Valetta harbour. It was Rope Yarn Sunday too, a chance for the crew to wash and mend their clothes, to chat idly and to doze on deck. The purser had seen to it that the oldest water casks were hoisted up on deck, allowing the men to rinse their clothes in freshwater – a rare luxury for sailors. The Return of Thomas GreyChapter 6 Lightning Strikes

August 1808 The ships of the inshore squadron kept their vigil over the months of July and then August, and they caught a few more blockade runners. The French skippers became more crafty over time, or perhaps the less crafty had been weeded out, and they clung more closely to the coast. The French also installed more batteries along the coastline to give their shipping better protection. As Thomas knew, this was even good for the British. The guns placed along this coast – first...
