Dan Talbot was once again cubby-holed in his den trying to take advantage of all
the advertising he had seen to make this holiday season an "E-Season". Instead
of getting in the car and driving from strip mall to strip mall, he and his wife
Karen had decided that this holiday period, the Internet would do their shopping
work for them.
Dan had decided that his nephew, Tim, would really enjoy some books that had a
Sci-Fi theme, which was his favorite form of writing. Since the new millennium
was fast approaching, Dan thought that some books that had this as a central
theme might interest Tim. Dan had already checked Amazon.com and Barnes and
Noble's web site, but couldn't seem find anything that would interest his 15-
year-old nephew. So, on a whim, he decided to do a search using the keywords
"Sci-Fi" and "millennium". After a pause of a few seconds, his request to
Hotbot's search engine came back with one entry: a link to something called
"S2000 - Changes Ahead".
"S2000?" Dan muttered. "That's a bit different. I've certainly heard of Y2000
and Y2K, but not this S2000. Wonder if it's related... ah, well, what the heck,
let's see what it's about."
About this time, Karen stuck her head in the den.
"Dan, dear, you know we're about to have supper in a few minutes. Can't you
tear yourself away now before you get immersed for the next few hours?"
"Just a minute, hon. I'm going to check out this book I've found as a present
for Tim. Why don't you come over here for a sec and see what you think."
Sighing, Karen walked over and stood beside Dan.
"Ok, what's so special about whatever you've found on the web this time?"
"Well, I don't know yet---I'm trying to find an interesting book for Tim---umm,
let's see, it says that this link is at a site called www.fictionmania.tv.
Ever heard of that site?"
"You're asking me--you're the big computer expert in the family who pulls in the
six figure income. Remember, I'm just an 'ol country lawyer," Karen said with a
bit of a snicker.
"Yeah, well, let's see what we find there."
And with a click of his mouse button, Dan heard the familiar whirring and
churning of his hard drive as it began to load the pages in at the web site.
After a few seconds, his web browser's window cleared out, and he was presented
with what appeared to be a blank screen. But on a closer inspection, there
seemed to be some image in the background---a bit faint, but with each passing
second, it seemed to be forming the letters "Story 2000: Your Heart's Desire".
"Great. Some kid is playing around with graphics or JavaScript or some other
new software tool, just to get some search engines to list his site. I should
have known--I certainly haven't been seeing any advertising on TV for this
fiddleman or fictionmac or whatever .com site this is." Dan muttered crossly.
"Wait a minute, hon--it seems to be getting brighter--as if..." exclaimed Karen.
Suddenly, both Dan and Karen felt their bodies freeze, as their eyes remained
locked onto the now pure white pulsating screen. Languidly, like swimmers
lazily practicing their strokes in a pure white pool, the letters forming the
image "S2000" floated in and out of their vision, over and over.
And then... then the white light was replaced by a blackness that seemed as
thick as something found in the depths of a crater on the moon---a blackness
that enveloped the two of them as they both began to feel as if they were
falling, falling, falling ever faster to some distant unknown point. Faster and
faster they seemed to fall, so fast that Dan would later swear that he thought
he was in one of those TV commercials where he thought he was going to hear the
slurping sound of some jet engine vacuum cleaner sucking him up into it's dust
chamber.
The loss of consciousness mercifully followed.

Groaning, Dan slowly pulled his head up off what he presumed was the hard
surface of his floor.
"My God" he thought. "What in the hell was THAT all about? Whoever designed
that site must have been the one who did that Pokeman thing in Japan last year--
making the TV screen flash just so and all those kids had a nervous fit."
Another groan caused Dan to turn his head sharply.
"Karen---are you..."
But Dan's words died on his lips as he suddenly found a strange mass of brown
hair flipping into his face.
"Wha... What in the hell!"
Reaching up catch one of the errant clumps of hair, Dan got another shock---the
hand that grabbed the hair was most certainly not his; rather, it seemed to be
small, slender, almost delicate. Completely flummoxed, Dan cast his eyes down
upon his chest and got an even bigger shock: there seemed to be two protrusions
tenting out his shirt now in a manner that looked alarmingly like a pair of
women's breasts!
Gasping, Dan ran his fingers down the front of his chest and was able to confirm
that whatever these protrusions were, they were attached to him in some manner
that he could feel his fingers examining them. Continuing to look down, Dan was
startled to see that he no longer seemed to be wearing pants: instead, he could
see what appeared to be a pair of slim, firm legs naked from the knees down
splayed out before him.
Another groan from the other side of the room snapped Dan out of his immediate
self-examination.
"Karen---my God, honey--I, I don't know what's happened to me, but are you ok---
Karen?"
"Dan... Oh Dan, hon, my head feels like it's going to blow off the top of my
head. What in the world happened?"
Shakily trying to stand up by grabbing the nearby chair, Dan suddenly froze. If
time seemed to have stood still before while they were frozen by that stupid
fictionmac web site, it had decided that things REALLY needed to slow down for
Dan this time. For instead of seeing his beloved wife Karen, he seemed to have
wandered into a bizarre fun house of mirrors---for there looking back at him was
HIMSELF!
"Kar... Kar.. Karen..." Dan stuttered out. "Is this.... or is that... you---NO!
It can't be you... My God! What has happened to us?"
"Dan... Dan... I... I... don't know, but..." Suddenly, the person that occupied
Dan's body let out a shriek.
"That's me! Me...! Me...! I... I... Who the hell are you? What is happening
... where am I..." The voice faded out, replaced by a series of shuddering sobs.
"Hon, hang on. Hang on. I don't know what's happened, or HOW it could have
happened, but it seems you're in my body... and... and... I guess I'm now in
yours," Dan stammered out before he too began a slow collapse to the floor, with
silent tears tracking down his cheeks.
"Yes... yes, it seems that way. But why... how?"
"It's got to be that stupid web site. Somehow, it sent some sort of strange
signal out that caused us to undergo this incredible transformation. That's got
to be the key. Maybe if we can remember exactly what happened, we can reverse
what's happened to us, and change back! Yeah, that's it, we've got to remember
EXACTLY what happened, and I'll bet we can reverse this change."
Dan began to pace the room excitedly, trying to ignore the strangely pleasant
feelings of the whisper of nylon from his pantyhose encased legs. He also made
a mental note to himself to walk more carefully, as he seemed to be on the verge
of tottering off into some new slanted direction as a result of the two-inch
high pumps he now wore on his feet.
"Ok...what did that image say...something about Story 2000... Your... Your...
Ah, do you remember the rest of what that said, Karen?"
"'Your Heart's Desire', Dan, 'Your Heart's Desire' " Karen quietly muttered with
a look of intense concentration on her face.
"Yeah---that's right--those were the words. What do you think that might...
Ohhh." Dan's voice trailed off for a moment.
"Umm, Karen, dear, uh, I seem to recall that you often said you wished you knew
as much as I did about computers, because that would help you in your work as a
lawyer. That you would become the perfect lawyer for the next millennium, savvy
about how the 'net and computers and law all inter-operated in the brave new
world of e-com," Dan slowly said.
"And Dan, hon, I seem to recall you often wished you knew more about the law,
because it seemed that you felt that today's technologists were going to be
running smack into new rules and regs that they didn't have a clue as to how
they would impact your industry. A marriage of knowledge between the law and
technology would be the ideal business path to make a comfortable living... Oh
my God, Dan---don't you see---we've both become 'Our Heart's Desire'!"
"Yyes...it seems that we have---it sure seems we have." Dan slowly stated.
Suddenly, both were startled by a sharp set of knocks to the door. Stumbling
over to the door's privacy peephole, they looked out to see a US Postman
standing out the door.
"What's HE doing here now, can this get any crazier?" Dan exclaimed.
"What should we..." Karen was interrupted by another series of knocks to the
door.
"Well, heck, who knows--this is so screwy now, let's go ahead and open the door
and see what he wants."
"Ok...go ahead, Dan, find out what he wants."
Dan slowly opened the door, just as the postman began to walk down the sidewalk
to his little vehicle parked on the street.
"Uh oh, excuse me... Were you looking for someone?" Dan said, as he
uncomfortably noticed for the first time the change in his voice to a much
higher range than he was used to.
The postman, at the sound of his voice, stopped in mid-step, turned, and began
to stride back towards the house.
"Mrs. Talbot? I have a Special Delivery item of mail here for..." A pause. "for
a Dan Talbot and Karen Talbot."
"Uh oh, that's me, and my wif... husband is right here. What is it? Do we have
to sign something?"
"Yes, I need both your signatures here..." he pointed to a line, "...and here."
Karen had silently come up behind Dan and stood quietly as Dan began to sign the
form. Dan handed her the pen, and she somewhat nervously signed in the
indicated locations, and then handed the pen back to the postman, whereupon he
reached into his bag and produced a letter.
"Thanks very much folks. Enjoy the rest of the day."
Grimacing, Dan muttered, "Yeah... if you consider that suddenly, out of the
blue, you find yourself in your wife's body something to enjoy."
"Well, Dan, what is it. Where's it from?"
"Ummm...the postmark is kinda smudged, but it looks like I can make out... Oh, I
can't read it--it's too smudged."
Tearing open the envelope with his newly lengthened fingernails, Dan reached in
and extracted a sheet of paper. Unfolding it, he noticed an official looking
seal at the top, and under that, some text that began with the word:
"Greetings:" --- and two airline tickets.
"Can this get any crazier... special delivery mail... airline tickets... I KNOW
this must be a dream." Sighed Dan.
"Well, what does it say...what does it say" Demanded Karen impatiently.
"Ok... ok... let's see..."
"Greetings:
Our small town is currently in need of individuals that possess a unique set of
skills in both the legal and information technology fields. It has come to my
attention that the two of you have recently been through some unique training
courses that have given you the appropriate tools to be able to fully capitalize
on the strengths of both these fields. Moreover, it is my understanding that
these unique courses have given you the capability to gain a truer sense of what
it is like to "walk in another's shoes", in a manner of speaking, in the two
professions. As such, I would like to extend an invitation for the two of you
to visit our little community in the hopes that you might find some new career
path that the two of you could pursue in the hopes of fully utilizing your new
found skills. I am enclosing a pair of airline tickets in the hopes that you
will be willing to at least "give us a look." I feel confident that once you
have seen our little community, I'm sure you will
Peering over Dan's now more diminutive frame, Karen asked, "I can't quite make
it out---who's name is that?"
"There isn't a name...it's simply signed 'The Judge' Town of Ovid, Ovid,
Oklahoma." Dan slowly said.
Somewhere in one of the trees surrounding their house, a single crow cawed out a
cadence that sounded strangely like the sound of scratchy laughter.
