It is indeed a sad state of affairs to those who have journeyed to this
country, when they see the streets, the roads, and bars crowded with
young folk of the male sex, who are unable to find an unmarried woman to
wed. These men, instead of attempting to better themselves in a
righteous fashion for the few young women left unwed in this country,
are forced to employ all their time in activities designed to attract or
capture women: as they grow up either their turn thieves for want of
work, or enter the slaver trade by kidnapping a woman from a distant
city to be with them.
I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of men
acting in what may only be considered reckless disregard for the virtues
of civil society, is in the present deplorable state of the people's
republic a very great additional grievance; and, therefore, whoever
could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these men sound,
useful members of the community, would deserve so well of the public as
to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the
sons of those who have turned to a life of crime; it is of a much
greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of young men who find
themselves as little able to support a wife as those who steal from us.
As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years upon this
important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of other
projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in the
computation. It is true, the male overpopulation can be reduced
considerably by taking the steps noted by the People's Congress to
execute or otherwise punish criminal deviants. But I propose that on the
contrary of increasing the already overburdened judicial system and
otherwise placing more individuals in terror, that they should, on the
contrary provide the nation with not just a reduction in the
overpopulation of males but a reduction in the current rate of
population production in general.
There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it will
prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women
murdering their daughters, alas! Too frequent among us! Sacrificing the
poor innocent babes I doubt more to avoid the shame than the expense,
which would move tears and pity in the most savage and inhuman breast.
The number of souls in this country being usually reckoned one billion
and a half, of these I calculate there may be about one hundred million
couples whose wives are breeders on an annual basis; from which number I
subtract eighty million couples who are on balance having no more than
one child in the family and would serve to have a coequal number of
males and females if only this group were to breed, although I apprehend
there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the People's
Republic who would be able to maintain their children in a standard of
living that is decent and honourable; but this being granted, there will
remain an excess of twenty million women giving birth to males. I again
subtract two million for those women who miscarry, or whose sons die by
accident or disease within the year. There only remains eighteen million
of excess males annually born. The question therefore is, how this
number shall be provided with wives, which, as I have already said,
under the present situation of affairs, is utterly impossible by all the
methods hitherto proposed. For we can neither employ them in handicraft
or agriculture; we neither build houses (I mean in the country) nor
cultivate land: they can only pick up a livelihood by stealing or
otherwise menacing society and make upon themselves a potential threat
to the few women who are available for marriage at any given time.
I am assured by our central planners, that there are not enough jobs
being created in China to allow for their employ and that the rise in
criminal activity and democratic desire stems in large party from a need
to release pent up hostility towards the state.
I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will
not be liable to the least objection.
I have been assured by a very knowing Chinese of my acquaintance in
Shanghai, that a young healthy man properly trained can be so completely
feminized that she will no longer remember her beginnings as a man, and
that she can be so completely transformed that not only will a potential
husband find no fault with her body but that she will prove a more
traditional wife than a naturally born woman. This being said, such
transformed girls will be the first to find suitors and, with the added
benefit that they do not breed, they can be easily released unto society
and the Chinese government might even be able to relax the one-child
policy.
I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the
fifteen million males under the age of 25, found guilty of any criminal
activity carrying with it a sentence of two years or greater, be
reprieved and changed into a young woman. Of course, this procedure will
also be offered to any young man who wishes it or to the parents of a
young boy who desire certain refinements (or then monetary reward of
10,000 yuan for allowing the transformation of a son into a daughter).
It is a will known scientific fact that such feminized women are
infinitely more law abiding and can be molded into the perfect semblance
of a Chinese bride. Furthermore, they can be exported to other countries
and with their remittances serve to increase the motherland's income, or
they might receive degrees overseas and, properly programmed, become the
eyes and ears of Beijing when landing on foreign shores. In final
measure, the girls, having had male hormones in their bodies for several
years can also serve to increase China's share of gold metals in the
Olympics.
I have reckoned that this means will drive down criminal rates because
it will eliminate recivitism from our society but, furthermore, it will
reduce criminality in the second order because few males would choose to
see their male members excoriated from their bodies.
I grant that this reduction in crime may bring with it a corresponding
reduction in the available population for feminization and that either
the age may have to be increased or the sentences shortened in
determining those eligible for the procedure.
This means will also serve to reduce the costs to the People's Republic
of the judicial system and will cultivate an increase in demand for more
traditional clothing and products, all of which are more often purchased
by young ladies than young men.
A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I
highly esteem, was lately pleased in discoursing on this matter to offer
a refinement upon my scheme. He said that many gentlemen of this
country, having of late found female companionship lacking in their
wives, he conceived that the want of femininity might be well supplied
by the bodies of young lads who have not yet committed a crime; so great
a number of males in every province being now ready to starve for want
of work and service; and these to be predisposed to violence. But with
due deference to so excellent a friend and so deserving a patriot, I
cannot be altogether in his sentiments; for as to men who have not yet
committed a crime or been otherwise referred to us, my Chinese
acquaintance assured me, from frequent experience, that disregarding the
rule of law and kidnapping them for such pleasures or otherwise
fabricating charges could lead to an undoing of all of the beneficial
aspects of this plan; and besides, it is not improbable that some
scrupulous people might be apt to censure such a practice (although
indeed very unjustly), as a little bordering upon cruelty; which, I
confess, hath always been with me the strongest objection against any
project, however so well intended.
But in order to justify my friend, he confessed that this expedient was
put into his head by the famous Chen Xiao-Ming, a native of the island
Formosa, who came from thence to Shanghai above twenty years ago, and in
conversation told my friend, that in his country there were many such
boys who secretly desired to be girls but that they would not admit it
as such. Indeed, he speculated that virtually all young men at one time
or another have such fantasies and the increases in responses to a
certain website in the United States confirms this prognosis. Neither
indeed can I deny, that if the same use were made of several young men
in this town, who without one single yuan to their fortunes, the country
would not be the worse.
Some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about that vast
number of men without wives who are aged, diseased, or maimed, and I
have been desired to employ my thoughts what course may be taken to ease
the nation of so grievous an encumbrance. But I am not in the least pain
upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day
dying and rotting by cold and famine, and filth and vermin, as fast as
can be reasonably expected. And as to the young laborers, they are now
in as hopeful a condition; they cannot get work, and consequently pine
away for want of nourishment, to a degree that if at any time they are
accidentally hired to common labor, they have not strength to perform
it; and thus the country and themselves are happily delivered from the
evils to come.
I have too long digressed, and therefore shall return to my subject. I
think the advantages by the proposal which I have made are obvious and
many, as well as of the highest importance.
For first, as I have already observed, it would greatly lessen the
number of males, with whom we are yearly overrun, being the principal
increase in the population of the nation as well as our most dangerous
citizens.
Secondly, These males will come to find value in their lives as women,
while finding themselves living in greater splendor than they previously
had known and with their mind alteration, they will be perfectly content
to act in a manner pleasing to their husbands and themselves.
Thirdly, Whereas the maintenance of an extra fifteen million criminals,
from two years in prison and upward, cannot be computed at less than ten
yuan a piece per day, the nation's stock will be thereby increased by
more than 50 billion yuan per annum, beside the profit gained from
remittances and the growth of women's labor, which is always and
everywhere in short supply. And the money will circulate among
ourselves, the goods being entirely of our own growth and manufacture.
Fourthly, these feminized males will not breed and thus not increase the
surplus population, yet their desirable qualities will all but assure
that they are quickly married.
Fifthly, it will put down the rebellion by our young women towards
things that are Western when they see that their potential husbands are
desiring female flesh not of natural origin.
Sixthly, This would be a great inducement to marriage, which all wise
nations have either encouraged by rewards or enforced by laws and
penalties. It would increase the care and tenderness of mothers toward
their daughters because they will realize that their sons have a greater
chance of becoming daughters anyway. We should see an honest emulation
among the married women, and when sons are born, the reward offered
should provide sufficient inducement to have them converted quickly into
young girls. Men would become as fond of their wives during the time of
their pregnancy as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in
calf, their sows when they are ready to farrow; nor offer to beat or
kick them (as is too frequent a practice) for fear of a miscarriage.
Many other advantages might be enumerated. For instance, the addition of
some million young women for the correspondence clubs could make for a
reduction in the overpopulation of the entire globe and because we will
be controlling the entire process, we can make each and every young girl
much more beautiful than they would be if nature had given them the
body.
However, after all, I am not so violently bent upon my own opinion as to
reject any offer proposed by wise men, which shall be found equally
innocent, cheap, easy, and effectual. But before something of that kind
shall be advanced in contradiction to my scheme, and offering a better,
I desire the author or authors will be pleased maturely to consider two
points. First, as things now stand, how they will be able to find wives
for an fifteen million young men? And secondly, there being roughly a
billion and a half of creatures in human figure throughout this country:
I desire those politicians who dislike my overture, and may perhaps be
so bold as to attempt an answer, that they will first ask the parents of
these mortals, whether they would not at this day think it a great
happiness to have been changed into a young woman in the manner I
prescribe, and thereby have avoided such a perpetual scene of
misfortunes as they have since gone through by the turning to crime,
eventual imprisonment and potential execution, not to mention the fact
that their new found daughters will not only be perfectly happy and live
long lives but that they need never worry about being drafted into the
army during times of war?
I profess, in the sincerity of my heart, that I have not the least
personal interest in endeavoring to promote this necessary work, having
no other motive than the public good of my country, by advancing our
trade, providing for our young men, relieving the judicial system, and
giving some pleasure to the women. In order that it is shown that I have
no means by which I can propose to get any benefit, I humbly agree to be
the first to submit to such a conversion process.
