Like most teens, they weren't discussing anything in particular, and still they managed to add to the din of the lunchtime crowds. They were still chatting away when Suzie felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Dean Stanton, the quarterback for the school's football team. He looked down at her and gave her a smile. Suzie was sure that he intended it to be attractive, but it really just looked sleazy and creepy. He said, "Hey, babe, I've decided to do you a favor and take you out on a date this Friday." She gave him a disapproving look. "Not interested." "Everybody knows what you're interested in, but I'm sure I can turn you around, unless you want everyone to know exactly what you do in your off hours." Suzie rolled her eyes. This guy was so pathetic. He was trying to blackmail her with revelation of her lesbianism, but it was a waste of time. Dean, not used to being rejected by any girl, almost growled, "Now look here!" Before he could go on, he felt a hand clamp down on his shoulder and lift him up into the air. He turned his head to see who was doing this. Despite the fact that he had been lifted six inches into the air, he found himself staring right into the eye of a six and a half foot tall girl who was built like a brick wall. Dean had seen this girl around the school, but since he was a senior and she was a freshman, he had just ignored her despite her large size and fantastic physique. The girl, rather angrily, said, "Perhaps you didn't hear my sister. She said, 'Go away.'" Suzie, without looking back, said, "Allow me to introduce my little sister, Jamie." Jamie said, "I think you have somewhere else you need to be," and flung him one armed off to the side. Dean got off his ass and briefly considered making a scene, but then thought better of it. Jamie had lifted and thrown him one armed and didn't look even slightly strained. He did make a pretense of recovering his dignity by taking the time to brush himself off before walking away. Jamie sat between his sister and Amy. Suzie said, "You know, kiddo, you're not too bad to have around," and playfully shouldered her. Jamie smiled, knowing her sister meant it. A few years ago things had been hugely different. To begin with, Jamie had been a boy, and despite being brother and sister, he and his sister had never gotten along. Then he had received an unmarked envelope in the mail. Inside there had been a medallion with no note of any kind saying where it had come from. That same day, his sister, a bit of a bully, had forced him into a dress (discovering the medallion in his pocket when he undressed) and made him go with her to a weight lifting expo to act as a gopher for the female participants. Despite being in a dress, he had fun that day. He also found out that his sister was a lesbian, and that they shared a common attraction in the hard-bodied participants. Finding a bit of peace in that, they went through the warm-up area looking for leftovers they could claim as trophies. While there, they found a weight bar with 300 pounds on it and Suzie wished she could see who could actually use it. When her gaze fell on Jamie, he was transformed from a small male to a six and a half foot tall woman who was physically strong enough to lift that 300 pound weight. Suzie and Amy were finishing up their fries and a soda, but Jamie was still eating her foot-long turkey sub when Amy said, "Damn, girl, I wish I could eat like you do." "Hey, this is a low-fat sub." "Even so, I couldn't eat half what you do without ballooning up like a beach ball. How do you pack it away?" "You could do the same. All it would require is twenty-five hours a week workout time, minimum." Amy replied, "No, no, no, no. Not me. I'll be satisfied with sharing your hard body," and winked suggestively. Suzie wiped her mouth and said, "Come on, girls, if we're going to make the four o'clock sale at the department store, we better get going." Jamie said, "You two go ahead. Not that I'm complaining, you look great in that blouse-skirt combo, and the heels do great things for your legs, but it does seem a little dressy for a night at the mall." "Do you really like it?" "I think it looks great." "Thanks. I'm an amateur designer and seamstress. I actually designed and made this outfit. That's why I'm wearing it." "Really? It's fantastic." "Thank you." "So what school do you go to? You seem familiar, but I don't think I can recall your face." "Actually, I'm home schooled. You may have seen me around the mall, though. Mom insists on me spending a couple evenings a week here since I don't get more 'normal' socialization at a school." "What days?" Realizing how forward she was beginning to sound, Jamie quickly said, "I mean do you have a regular schedule or anything?" "Not regular or anything. I suppose that's why I've never formed any solid friendships yet." "I could be your friend. If you want." Jamie wondered if she sounded as desperate to Mina as she did to herself. Mina didn't seem to notice and said, "I'd like that, but..." "What?" "I want you to know that I'm... only interested in girls. When I'm interested at all. I mean I'm not trying to proposition you or anything, but some girls get weirded out by being around me. I just wanted you to know up front." "That's okay. "Call it professional... semi-professional interest. I want to see what kind of clothes designs they've got." A bit sardonically, Jamie said, "Then there's even less to look at." "What's that supposed to mean?" "The selection of clothes that the big and tall store carries isn't exactly expansive, much less fashionable. There just aren't enough girls my size to make carrying a large selection profitable." "That's too bad. You're a pretty girl. You deserve pretty clothes." "Thanks." The two arrived at the store and Jamie started going over the racks of clothes. After a few minutes, Mina said, "You're right. This selection sucks." "Yeah, but what are you going to do? No other stores carry a thing that'll fit me." Mina thought about it and said, "I could design a few outfits for you." "You could?" "Yes. You'd have to model for me in your lingerie while I get your measurements." Jamie's nipples tensed up thinking of being in the nearly nude in front of Mina. "I thought you weren't propositioning me." She's agreed to design some outfits for me." While Jamie selected some outfits, Suzie gave Mina a visual once over. As Jamie started back towards the dressing room, Suzie said, "I'll give you a hand," and followed her back to the dressing room. Once there, she said, "Jamie, I think there's something you should know about your friend." "Please don't tell me she's some kind of drug dealer or something. I really like her." Suzie listened not only to Jamie's words, but also her tone, and said, "No, nothing like that. What's she told you about where she goes to school?" "She said she was home schooled. Why?" Suzie considered something for a bit before saying, "Well, I think I know her. If I recall, the reason she's home schooling is because she had some problems with pushy bullies, so go easy with her, or you might scare her off." "Okay, thanks." Jamie tried on a few outfits with Suzie's help, then went out and paid for her clothes. After they left, she asked Mina, "Can you really make me some nicer clothes?" "Easily." "When do you want to get together?" "How about this weekend?" "Sounds great." ************ FOUR WEEKS LATER, AT MINA'S HOUSE... Jamie posed in front of Mina's full length mirror. She turned back and forth, swirling her dress's hem a bit. "This is incredible! I can't believe you managed to finish all these clothes in just a month." Mina, pins in her mouth, regarded Jamie with a seamstress's eye. "Not quite finished yet. I've still got some minor alterations to get them just right." "Why? They're great as is." "They're off-the-rack great. As the designer and seamstress who made the clothes, I'm allowed to insist upon tailor-made great. Now stand still while I make some adjustments." Jamie held herself in place while Mina made some adjustments and pinned the fabric in certain places. Then she said, "Okay, shimmy on out of that, and I'll get started on the alterations." Jamie reached back and unzipped her dress. As it fell from her shoulders, Mina blushed and said, "Geez, Jamie, I meant in the bathroom. You're not decent under that dress." Jamie gave her an amused smile. "You're so cute when you get overly modest. I don't know what you're complaining about. You've seen me in that two-piece I wear; it covers a lot less than the slip and underthings I've got on now." "Yeah, but what you're wearing now isn't supposed to be seen by strangers. After a bit, Jamie said, "I wish you'd let me pay you for this work you're doing for me. I feel a little guilty just buying the fabric and thread and letting you do all the work." "Nonsense. Up till now, the only people I've been designing for are me and mom. You give me a lot of good practice." "Still, I'd like to do something for you. Over the last month she had been dropping hints, some subtle, some not so, that she wanted more than just a friendship with Mina, but the smaller girl had either not noticed or made it clear that she wasn't interested. Jamie had covered herself by always saying she was just teasing, and Mina seemed to accept it, but Jamie couldn't help wanting more. Mina finished up the work she was doing on Jamie's dress then handed it back to her. Jamie put it back on then posed in front of the mirror. "This outfit is so incredible. "I'll give it a try." The two took a quick bus ride to a park on a hill overlooking the city. Jamie took Mina to a secluded part of the park where they could sit on a hill and see the lights of the city, just coming on for the evening, twinkle in a delicate pattern. Sitting there, Mina said, "It's beautiful." "Yeah. My sister's friend, Amy, brought me up here. She called it the most romantic spot in the city." Mina just stared in awe for a while. Jamie finally decided to take a chance and leaned over and kissed Mina. She expected the girl to pull away, but was pleasantly surprised when Mina wrapped her arms around her shoulders and pulled Jamie close. The kiss was deep and lasting, and Jamie expected it to go on for a while, but Mina surprised her by suddenly breaking the kiss and shoving Jamie away. She looked up and said, "My real name is Will. About a month ago, you saved me from a bunch of bullies who were beating on me. I tried to talk to you then, but you wouldn't even give me a chance." Jamie was growing angry by the second. "So you dressed up like a girl to trick me? Make me want you?!" "No! I just wanted... needed a friend. I didn't expect it to go this far." Jamie advanced on Will. "But you hid who you were! Purposefully hid it to see me in my underwear!" She expected Will to deny it, but he instead just cringed. "Don't hurt me!" Jamie looked down at herself. Her hands were clenched into fists, and her entire body seemed ready to pounce. She purposefully relaxed, saying, "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just... disappointed. Come on. I'll walk you home." After he put his wig back on, Jamie escorted Will back home. Neither said a word. Will was too afraid of making Jamie angrier than she was. Jamie was too confused. After she dropped Will off, she tried to piece together her thoughts. What was going on? She had been really attracted to Mina, but Mina turned out to be a guy. Jamie didn't like guys, not in that way. But even now she still wanted to be with the girl she had spent every weekend with for the last month, even knowing she was really a he. She was still confused when she walked into her home, barely acknowledging her father and sister as she went up to her room. She was laying on her bed, trying to sort out her thoughts, when Suzie knocked on the door frame, asking, "Can I come in?" "It's your room, too." "Yeah, but if you really want some alone time, I can come back later." "Naw, come on in." Suzie stepped in and sat on the edge of Jamie's bed. "You look like you've got something on your mind. Care to talk about it?" When Jamie said nothing for a bit, Suzie asked, "Perhaps something to do with that boy in girl's clothing you've been chasing around with for the last month?" "Boy in...? You knew?!" Suzie nodded. "He's good, but there are things to notice that gave him away." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Why? Like you said, you really liked him." "That was when I thought he was a she." "So? Is he a different person than he was before?" "But he's a guy! I'm not into guys." "You were into him." "But I'm not gay." "Of course you are. You're a girl who likes doing it with other girls." Jamie went inside and sat down as Mrs. Benson got some tea. Finally she sat beside Jamie on the couch and said, "Will didn't tell me what happened last night. May I ask you?" "I guess I got a little amorous and kissed him. That's when he told me about who he really was." "Right in the middle of the kiss?" "No. He broke the kiss off early, then told me." "Good to see he told you before it got too serious. I'd've tanned his hide if he had taken advantage of you. You know, he really does like you." "Likes me so much he lied to me about who he was." "I wasn't too fond of this plan when he told me about it, but he tells me he tried to just be friends with you, but you wouldn't even give him a chance." "I suppose I should've at least been friends. Given that a chance." "So now that you know him, what do you think of him?" "I don't know. Mrs. Benson, all my life I thought I was just gay, and I was really attracted to Mina. And even knowing that Mina is really Will, part of me still wants to be with him." "So what's the problem?" "The problem is, am I attracted to a fake person he was pretending to be, or the real person he is?" "I see your problem. Maybe I could help by telling you about him. Will was always different from the other kids. Even at the age of five, he had a fashion sense that put adults to shame. He knew how to sew by age seven, and was designing his own clothes' lines, both boys' and girls' clothes, at eight. Problem was, we weren't a rich family. His father and I tried to encourage him wherever we could, and we bought him material and goods, but he needed a modeling dummy. He solved that problem by using his own body. His father wasn't happy when he found out his son was wearing dresses, but he didn't want to discourage Will. Now Will would deny it, but he's as much Mina as he is Will." "I hope I do." Jamie went straight to the mall. She went to the food court, hoping to find him there. She did, but also saw a bunch of boys harassing him, trying to push his face into his food. Jamie grew enraged, and it wasn't just her regular rage at bullies. They were touching her friend. She stepped up and angrily yelled, "Hey! Let him go!" The lead bully looked back and asked, "What's he to you?" "He's my... boyfriend. So unless you want me to do to you what you're doing to him, get lost." The bully contemplated it for a while before letting Will go and walking away without a word. When Jamie sat beside him, Will said, "You didn't have to say I was your boyfriend." Jamie put her hand on Will's. "Don't you want to be my boyfriend?" Will stared at her for a few seconds before saying, "I thought you didn't like boys." "I was thinking of all boys as being like that bully. Don't get me wrong. I'm still not happy you deceived me, but I understand why you did it. And part of me is glad you did. I like you, Will, and I'd like to try a serious relationship. If you want to." Will was too stunned to say anything and just nodded. Jamie leaned over and kissed him. They sat together for a while before Jamie asked, "Could you do me a favor?" "What?" "Don't give up being Mina. I liked being with her." Will smiled. "I can do that."
