The withered old crone was astonished to see the middleman standing in her
doorway dressed in a cheerleader's outfit. It wasn't easy to astonish the crone.

His delay of speech emphasized his conclusion of the nature of the crone's
existence.
She started to object, but he halted her prepared denial with but a gesture.
"Don't try to deny that you are a witch, and the last of your coven. I have done
my research. I know that your real name is Agatha Cross."
"Very well, young man. I will speak plainly. What is it that you want of me?
Tell me quickly, for I do not like it when a stranger meddles into my life."
"As you like, witch. I wish you to transform me into a beautiful teenage girl so
that I can really fill out this costume."
The crone was truly stunned! Such a thing was usually deemed to be a punishment
to a man, and here was such a man requesting this strange fate.
"Why would you have me do this to you?"
"Not that it is any of your concern, but I have always felt that I was born the
wrong gender. It is my fantasy to live the life that I should have had. I want

"If I refuse, Sonny?" queried the crone. She already knew the answer before it

The middle-aged man in the doorway trembled slightly in fear, caught as he was
in the hubris of his desperate gambit. He knew very well the forces that he was
dealing with. Agatha Cross possessed the arcane ability of the blackest magic,
and could transform him into the foulest of creatures with but a gesture.
The crone cackled, actually cackled, at his arrogant demand. Her laughter died
anon, to be replaced by a countenance of deadly seriousness.
"So be it... little girl. I give you your heart's desire. I grant you your
treat.' Know this... young lady. Black magic demands that a price be paid for
its benefits, and it is a dear price that you will come to know intimately.
Nothing is for free. Before your foul little blackmail is done, your treat may
very well become the trick. You may have to sacrifice your soul to gain that
which you most desire."
With that hoarse declaration, the old crone muttered a few unintelligible words.
She made a few strange gestures in the direction of the man at the doorway.
The man looked down at himself, only to find that he was still the same.
"Nothing happened," growled the disappointed man.
"Of course not. It is not that easy. I gave you the ability to switch bodies
with a person of your choosing. All you have to do is find the person who would
become, and then stare into their eyes. You will hear their pulse, their
lifeblood coursing through their veins. Their pulse will grow stronger, like
unto thunder in your ears, until the pulse becomes your own. Beware. You can do
this switch one time, and one time only. Once you are embraced by the body of
your own choosing, you can never again be separated. Not even another spell will
undo the magic."
The ramifications of the spell dawned upon the man in the doorway.
"B-but... in order for me to become a girl, I will have to steal their life. I
will have to take away their family, their friends, and their loved ones...
everything. I will have to steal their very identity."
The crone finished his thought. "And you will have to sentence them to your life
and existence which you consider so unbearable. Yes, young lady. THAT is the
price that you must pay. You must become little more than a murderer . . . a
taker of another's life. Can you do this? Can you trade your soul for a new
body?"
"I can't. I'm not a bad person. The price is too high."
"That is for you to decide. I suspect that if your fantasy is as strong as you
would make it to be, you will not be able to gaze into the eyes of ANY woman
without hearing their pulse thunder in your ears. Soon you enough you will
either shun that which you desire... woman, or complete the trade to silence the
thunder. What exquisite torture befitting this High Holiday. Either way, the
trick is upon you... little girl. Now begone!"
The crone closed the door on the man in the cheerleader outfit... tears
streaming down his cheeks.
