How I became Rani

Let me tell you the unusual reason I became interested in sarees.
Just a few years I did not really have any interest in India at
all. However I now have a very great interest and it was brought
about in a very unusual manner.
It all started about three years ago when a fellow by the name of
Chandril moved into the same apartment complex as myself.
Chandril was a grad student from Mumbai and was taking a course
at a local University here in Birmingham, Alabama. I was also a
student there at that time, we meet in the laundry room from time
to time and talked about philosophy, current events, and the
like.
We were not what you would call friends, but were friendly
enough. At one point the subject of hypnotism came up. Chandril
said that he had been studying the subject for some time. I said
that I knew nothing about it.
He suggested that we study the subject together as he wanted to
give it a try but had no one to work with.
Foolishly or not I agreed. He was the hypnotist and I was the
subject. I found that I could be taken under fairly easily and at
first the sessions were pretty ordinary. Memory retrieval, mild
post-hypnotic suggestions and so forth.
But let me cut to the core of my experience. Chandril you see was
a bit more of an expert at the use of hypnosis then he let on,
and session by session he was taking me into deeper and deeper
trances and making them easier to induce.
After about two months of session every other week he had me
going quite deep indeed and I did not even remember it.
About half way into the third month of this he said that he had a
confession. He told me that he had wanted to try something as an
experiment and had started the sessions for this purpose.
He even said that he had been giving me post-hypnotic suggestions
of continue with this, much explaining why I had gone along in
the first place.
He also told me that he was indeed not an amateur but a very good
at the use of hypnosis. Then he told me the theme of his
experiment. He said that he wanted to take an American, such as
myself and do what he could to "induce an Indian attitude or
temperament in them."
Or that is see just how close he could come to turning an
American who knew nothing about India into an Indian.
I told him I thought that more than a bit preposterous. "Put up
or shut up he replied." Again foolishly or not I agreed and let
the hypnotism sessions continue.
After all I was feeling NO effects whatsoever so what was the big
deal?
Another month and he said that his experiment was done and ready
to be 'sprung'. Again I was confident that nothing was changed
with me at all.
True I had been reading a few books on India, and I had watched
quite a few movies India that he had lent me. But that was no big
deal. I could just as easily done that on my own.
So one evening he said he was going to start the test. First he
took me into a light trance and the took me deeper.
Sometime later he awoke me, I had noticed nothing. "What's the
matter Chandril? You little joke not working?" I asked him, and
was surprised to find that I delivered the line in an accent like
his! I was not doing an impression I just could not help myself!
I was not able to stop doing this.
"Is that all you notice?" asked Chandril with what I could only
call a rather smug smile on his face. That must have been a post-
hypnotic trigger word because after he said that It came to me
that I was in fact dressed in a sari! Not only that but I was
also wearing make-up, jewelry, and had on a long black wig done
up in a bun at the back of my head.
To say the least I was quite up-set by this, but he talked
quietly and confidently and was able to calm me down (I later
found this was an old hypnotist's trick.) Not only did he calm me
down, but I soon found nothing wrong with the state I had found
myself in.
Before long he not only had me at ease but I was still speaking
in the Mumbai accent (with my voice at a higher register!) and
responding to the name Rani. There we were discussing philosophy
while was doing an imitation of an Indian woman.
The maddest part is that I let this go on for another two months!
I let the sessions continue and would spend a few hours every
other week as Rani.
Then he graduated and returned to India. I kept all the Rani
stuff. (I had after all paid him for it.)
I no longer do that, however I now have an abiding interest in
all things Indian, and I am in fact writing his while wearing the
full attire.
I told you it was a strange experience didn't I?
