The B. Corporation
By Alec Stevens
1. Disappearances
Seth Dart, Detroit policeman was irate. The case he was
working on had only one common factor and no leads whatsoever. It
had started with a missing person case--one Chris Nalk. Since
then, seven other men had disappeared. Each missing man had been
having marital problems with their wives and had disappeared
without notice. Police had questioned just about everyone in town
and discovered nothing. Each man had appeared at work and left
without returning home. There were no ads in the paper, on the
radio, on television, or on the Internet. Their vehicles had been
left in inconspicuous places, and the owners of the property the
parked vehicles were on had not seen any men matching the police
description get out of the vehicles. Further questioning led to a
somewhat unbelievable observation--nobody had gotten out of the
vehicles! The police had quickly thought of the vehicles being
driven remotely, but extensive searches of the vehicles
components found no evidence of the sort.
"Sir, we just got word from Atlanta and some other large
cities of disappearances almost exactly like the ones here." A
policeman said.
"What? Have they gotten any leads?"
"Not yet, sir. They've hired a computer specialist to
search through files that were supposedly deleted upon closing."
"Inform me of any further progress."
"Yes, sir!"
Seth was just about to head home for the day when another
policeman came up to him.
"Sir?"
"What is it?"
"There's been another disappearance."
"Shit!"
"We have found something, however."
"Thank the Lord for small miracles. What is it?"
"Under a bridge, we found a rag soaked with chloroform. The
vehicle of the missing person was found on the other side of
town, but we have eyewitness reports that the vehicle had come
from the direction of the bridge."
"Any fingerprints? Tire tracks? Anything?"
"We just sent the chloroform rag to our lab. Other than
that, there's nothing."
"Sir! Just got word from Atlanta. Their computer specialist
found an e-mail. They're faxing it to us now and are tracing the
web address." The other said.
"About time things started to go our way. If either of you
get any more news, contact me immediately. I'll be at my house."
"Right." The two officers said in unison.
Seth was glad. It seemed as though this weeklong case was
about to end. He couldn't wait to get home to his wife. She would
have made dinner and soothed his soul from his hard day. Would
have, that is, if she hadn't been dead. He entered the house and
smelled something cooking. It was a new smell. Well, she did like
to try new things. However, upon entering the kitchen, his eyes
were greeted by a sight more horrible than anything he had seen
on the job to date.
His wife's body lay on the floor. She appeared to have been
shot in the chest three times. This, however, was not the worst
part. Her arm, from her elbow down, was missing. Looking around,
Seth saw this was not quite true. His wife's arm lay on a silver
platter in the center of the dinner table. It had obviously been
cooked and there were some slices out of it sitting on a plate at
his normal seat. Whoever had done this had been a sick bastard.
He told himself that it could have nothing to do with this case--
that one of the criminals he had formerly convicted had come
back. Frantically, he searched the kitchen with latex gloves on,
in order to prevent evidence from being affected.
In the corner, under a cabinet, he saw what appeared to be
his authorized police gun. Carefully picking it up to prevent
smearing of fingerprints, he noted that it was the same weight
and had the same grip as his own. He also found shell casings on
the floor that matched those he used. There appeared to have been
no signs of a struggle. In fact, Seth could tell by way the blood
had splattered that his wife had been moving towards her
assassin, thus implying that she felt no threat from him/her and
knew them well. Realizing his kid may be in danger; he picked up
the phone to call the nursery. Four rings--no answer. Seven--
still none.
Knowing that he would be arrested immediately upon calling
this in, he silently left the house and was soon at the nursery--
or rather, what had been the nursery. Smoke still rose from the
charred ruins of the facility. He frantically rushed forwards,
but was stopped by firefighters.
"Dammit, you bastards! My son! He might be alive! My son!
Let me through!"
"There were no survivors, sir. The bombs and gas took care
of that."
"Bombs and gas? How? Damn! My son..."
"The police believe that somebody killed the person
watching the children during a lunch break. They then donned a
quite believable disguise as that very same person. When they
arrived at the daycare center, they had placed bombs in every
room and soaked the floors with gasoline. So far, we've only
found the remains of children. No one saw the imposter leave, but
there are no remains indicating an adult's presence."
"Thank you, sir. I... need some time to myself."
"I'm really sorry, Mr..."
"Dart. Seth Dart." He said, walking back to his car.
He then proceeded to go to the library to relax and check
his e-mail.
2. Irrationality
"You've got mail!" The library's computer told him.
He had 3 new messages. Two were work e-mails unrelated to
the current case, and the other informed him that he had won a
free vacation. Opening it, he saw that the location was entirely
secret and that nobody would know where he was. Seeking a
temporary relief from the problem at his house, he did not grasp
the significance of the line reading 'You won't even have to use
any of your gas! We'll pick you up at a predestinated spot!' He
sent an affirmative and almost immediately afterwards was
informed to be at the corner of East Fifth Street in thirty
minutes.
Had he waited five minutes longer before he left, he would
have seen the e-mail from his colleague informing him that the
aforementioned e-mail had originated from the same address as the
e-mail informing Seth that he had just won a vacation.
3. Departure... Fruitless Discovery
He arrived at East Fifth on time and sat on the bench as he
had been instructed. The vehicle promised to pick him up was
nowhere in sight, and it was three minutes after the time from
the e-mail. As he began to get up, dismissing the e-mail as a
prank, a cloth was put over his face and he smelled chloroform.
He began to struggle, but due to the nature of chloroform, he
soon ceased to be conscious.
10 hours Later...
Seth awoke groggily as the van he was in slowed. He tried
to sit up, but was restrained. When the van came to a complete
stop, he was dragged out and flinched at the sudden brightness
from outside. They led him along a path, which he saw led to a
large mansion.
Well, maybe they're just handling me roughly so that their
secrets don't get out. He thought.
But then the path split, and rather than heading towards
the mansion, they were heading downwards into a subterranean
network of caverns. Seth could hear the sound of machinery
running and immediately thought he had been kidnapped to be a
slave. In one sense, he was right, but by most people's
definition of slavery (which was his as well), his slavery would
be of an entirely different nature.
They were soon at the beginning of a conveyer belt and had
him stand on it. They removed their hands from him and he took
the opportunity to attack. However, before his hand made contact,
it was frozen in place and then forced slowly to his side by an
unseen force.
"I suppose you want to know the real purpose of your
'vacation'. That's perfectly understandable. Look in front of
you... recognize any of those men?"
"That's David Lopa! He's one of the missing men!"
"I thought you'd know at least one, Officer. Now look at
these photographs, your hands have been released. I must warn you
though, any violent gestures will be stopped with excruciating
pain." The person handed him the photos.
"These women are beautiful! But... what connection do they
have to this?"
"Keep looking through the photos."
"Human-sized doll-boxes? So?"
"You investigate things but you can't see this? Those women
are the 'kidnapped' men."
"No way. No medical technology is advanced enough to change
males into females like that without any scar tissue, the
disappearances only started a month ago!"
"Are you interested in aliens, Seth?"
"To a small degree."
"Remember all the government's cover stories about the
UFO's?"
"You're not saying--?"
"Yes. We obtained a UFO for ourselves. It crashed about a
year ago and we found this derivation from their technology."
"But why men?"
"In our experimental tests, the psychological alterer wiped
women's minds completely, including the instinctual functions
such as breathing. It worked perfectly on men, though, so we had
to derive proper transformation technology from the aliens."
"Why?"
"The reason the world runs. Money. We plan on selling the
girls as life-size 'living' dolls. Their minds are programmed
according to the owner's desires. We also generate the bodies
according to the owner's specifications."
"My mind is strong! It'll never work with me!"
The people merely reacquired the photos and walked away,
laughing. Seth entered the alterer first, and despite his mind's
efforts to survive, he was quickly reprogrammed and then
complacently received the changes to his body before he was
placed in a box and shipped, awaiting activation...
4. Lead... Changes
An alarm was going off incessantly in police Captain Fred
Smith's office and as he entered, he swore. That sound meant that
something had happened to the transmitter implanted into an
officer's skin. Fred told himself it had merely malfunctioned,
but in the depths of his mind, he feared that the officer was
dead. He turned off the alarm and walked over to his computer.
After he typed in his computer password, he sent an
electronic status signal to the transmitter. At first, there was
no response, but after he had given up, it gave feeble reply.
Fred saw that the officer was Seth Dart. Dammit, Seth was a good
officer! Why couldn't it be a slacker like Ralph Derel? He felt
even worse because he had heard about Seth's wife and kid. He
wouldn't have committed suicide, he wasn't that type of person.
Then Fred noticed that something else was odd.
Seth's vital statistics were drastically, low enough to
keep him alive but making him appear dead. Then, all of a sudden,
his life signs rose back up to normal levels! This fully baffled
Fred. However, something was still not right. Looking closer at
the display, he saw that the hormonal levels differed
drastically. Not having taken but the minimal amount of biology,
he took these results to the station's lab.
"Whaddaya got, Fred?" Chris, a friend of Fred's said.
"Something I need you to look at. Now."
"You're my friend and all, but Fred, we're..."
"Now." In response, Chris nodded and walked to his computer
terminal, inserting the disk Fred had brought.
"So what's the problem? These readings are perfectly normal
for a female of those dimensions."
"The officer's not a female."
"She has do be, look at this. See all these names in red?"
He pointed out various items on the list. "Those are female
hormones. The blue are male hormones. As you can see, there are
very few blue ones."
"But Seth was a guy, Chris."
"Not according to this."
"Open the other file, it's a detail from his physical last
year. It's the same chip."
"I'll be damned. Do you think someone's screwing with you?"
"Can't be. Each chip is unique and cannot be exactly
duplicated."
"Then this one was taken from your Seth and placed in this
woman."
"It wasn't. Temperature records of the chip show that it
was in a constant temperature. Any attempt to remove the chip
would have registered."
"Fred, there has to be a logical explanation. What this
suggests is medically impossible. Look here, I just noticed
something else, look at the figure generated by the chip!"
"What in the hell is happening?"
"One sec. The chip reports that no surgery was done to
achieve the figure. Of course, if look at the height from before
and after, you can see what no surgery could possibly have
accomplished. He was 6'5" before, and now he's 5'9"!"
"Is he actually a female, you know, down there?"
"According to the chip, yes."
Fred left and thanked Chris. When he got back to his
office, he logged on to Seth's e-mail to see if he could find out
anything. There was one new message and two old ones. However,
there was a record of a fourth, which had been read after the two
older ones. Checking the police station's deleted mail folder,
Fred found no record of it. So it was self-deleting-like the e-
mails in the current case Seth had been working on. Entertaining
a hunch, Fred re-entered Seth's account and saw that the fourth
message had been about the e-mail sent only five minutes after
Seth had logged off. The phone rang and Fred picked it up
immediately.
"Fred Smith, Detroit Police Department?"
"This is he."
"We traced the web address, but it only led us to a site
with a smiling face before it dead-ended."
"Damn! They sure cover their tracks well! Thanks anyway."
He hung up.
Fred then had a brilliant idea. Looking through the court
systems, he looked for couples living nearby that were in court
today for marital reasons. After a short search, he had found one
only ten minutes away and departed.
Fred picked the lock and entered their home. He found their
computer and hacked into the husband's e-mail. And, unluckily for
Fred, he found what he was looking for. He opened the message,
responded, and went to the designated place to wait. And then the
person with chloroform came...
10 Hours Later...
Fred woke up groggily in the back of the same van Seth had
been taken in. There were three people watching over him and
another was driving. He reached into his coat and brought out his
gun, quickly shooting the three of them. The driver turned, but
before she could fire the tranquilizer, Fred shot her. As a
result, the van, rather than turning into the subterranean
levels, maintained a course straight to the mansion, which suited
Fred just fine.
As it got really close, Fred kicked open the back doors of
the van and leaped out, rolling to reduce the impact. He stopped
rolling in time to see the van crash into the front of the
mansion with a large explosion that left only the wings of the
mansion intact. Fred smiled as he stood up. He stumbled a bit as
he approached the remains, but before he got there, he fell to
the ground, jerking from the electricity traveling from the
malfunctioning chip. Blackness followed...
3 Hours Later...
"You've caused us a lot of trouble, Captain Smith." A voice
said from beyond the darkness. Of course, in the process, you've
helped us enough to compensate for the loss. Also, we'd like you
to know that although you meddled, Mr. Adler will still be coming
on his 'vacation'."
"What are you talking about?"
"Oh, company policy. 'Ones coming willingly will never be
submitted to horrible fates. Those trying to foil success shall
be used to fit the needs of those customers wishing to have the
somewhat 'dirtier' models.' You'll make an excellent sex slave to
Mr. Paz, the billionaire."
"What?"
"Don't worry, you'll never know. Bye-bye now."
Fred started to protest, but was once again brought to
darkness through chloroform...
5. Contact
Seth was a prisoner in his own mind. He had blockaded a
part of it during the process, saving the most vital knowledge he
had. So far, this had done nothing for him. The most he could do
was see through 'his' eyes. His vision of himself in his mind
also reflected his new outer image. He was considerably shorter
and realized that his captors hadn't been kidding. He was now a
woman. His breasts were about a size C and his crotch area was
flat and smooth, with a female's equipment.
He knew that if he left his secluded area, he would
essentially be lost. He could only watch the woman he now was
seek out the lonely man who had ordered her. As he listened, he
picked up that the man had been too shy to get a girl during
college and afterwards so he saw an ad and paid for 'Jessica',
regardless of the cost. To Seth's dismay, Jessica was programmed
perfectly to the man. At least he wouldn't actually experience
anything, he was just a passenger.
He found out for himself what Fred was doing about his
disappearance when a phone appeared on the wall of his prison. He
picked it up, heard rings. After awhile, it was picked up and
Fred's voice greeted him.
"Hello?"
"Fred? That you?"
"Yeah. What are these bastards up to ahhh, ahhhh, ahhhh!
Yes! Again! Sorry, bout that Seth. Apparently I'm not a passenger
as I thought."
"That's okay," Seth said, silently cursing his luck. "So
they got you too. Did you get an e-mail too?"
"No. I sought out the house of a couple of people with
marital problems and the husband had the e-mail. I managed to
kill three of the bastards and destroy the front of that mansion,
but then my chip malfunctioned and the electricity let them get
me. Now I'm a sex slave to a... ahhh! Yes! Do it... billionaire
for resisting them."
"Damn." Seth said and explained his situation.
"Well, they removed my chip, so the officers won't know
what's happened to me. They know that you're a woman now but your
locator is not working. Say, can you somehow access the
capabilities of your chip from your ahhh... ahh... ahhhh... Yes!
prision?"
"I may be able to, yes. Why?"
"Try to use your phone to contact that person that was in
the papers a while back. You know, the one with the powers who
diffused the terrorist army? Ahhh! Yes! Again! More! Now! Ahhh!"
And the phone went dead, Fred's mind prison destroyed.
And so, Seth was faced now with a new problem. He
visualized the chip and there was suddenly a computer on a desk
in the room. Seth turned it on and the smooth, innocent face of
the mutant appeared on the screen.
"Er, sir? Could you help me?"
"What's the problem? Just think it at me; it's quicker that
way. Ahh... okay... I see. Damn, man, that's pretty bad. And you
say at least thirty have already been taken? I'll get on
. . Hold little
." And the desk, computer, and phone were now gone. Seth
could only wait...
6. Research
Dave Taylor was astounded. Never before had anything like
this had happened in his homeworld. Sure, other dimensions had
supernatural occurrences of this magnitude, but never before had
they occurred here. This was a relatively mundane world and its
controversies were mere facts in other places. UFOs were one
example of this. Here, the truth was denied and controversy
arose. In other places, commerce with aliens happens everyday.
He stopped this line of thought quickly and began to think
about the actual problem. He activated a couple of his inventions
and started to begin planning his assault. To get the detailed
aspects of the case, Dave logged on to Seth's police account
using the password he had been given.
His network of super-sensitive surveillance satellites was
the first to report back. They had picked up no trace whatsoever
of a destroyed mansion. This fed one of Dave's beliefs and was
soon confirmed by his specially designed e-mail tracker. Rather
than dead-ending at the smiley face, his probe followed the trail
into another dimension, and crossed into others after that. He
then activated a machine that would locate overlap spots (spots
in parallel worlds containing many of the same major features and
thus most likely to 'overlap') and sent multi-dimensional
satellites to each location. He soon found his match.
It was located in a parallel Yucatan Peninsula, the mansion
having been reconstructed from that world's equivalent of the
Aztecs. Dave noted the extreme security measures that had been
set up around it, despite the fact that many would 'never' be
needed. For example, the site's location was not an overlap spot
in his own world. Rather, it was an overlap spot five worlds
distant (to help explain-a spot having a lot in common with
Dave's world would merely be an overlap spot. An overlap spot in
one of the many worlds with an overlap spot to Dave's would be
one world distant, and so on). A minor example would be the
roadblocks in each dimension, unless they dealt their business in
each of them, which Dave highly doubted.
Looking at the data, though, Dave saw that these people
were making the same fallacy many others had made-believing that
because of all their precautions they were safe from outer
attack. Dave planned to change this soon...
7. Commercial
"...you always alone? Have no one to play with? Dolls not
enough for you? Well, thanks to science advances made at B Corp,
there are now dolls that are almost exactly like real humans!
Realistic voices, behaviorisms, and artificially produced flesh.
In fact, the doll even 'ages' with its owner, going through
childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. The following footage
from our beta tests shows how sympathizing and realistic our
dolls are."
"Look, little Susie is sad because she got a C on her
report card. But what's this? B Corp's doll is comforting her and
she has stopped crying! And look at this footage of how realistic
they are! B Corp's beta doll A is helping Rachel cook a meal. Oh,
No! Beta doll A has cut her finger! The dolls even bleed!"
"Nor are these only for little girls! Grown women longing
for a friend or grown men desperately seeking a woman can also be
aided to happiness. For more information on B Corp and its dolls
please call the number at the bottom..."
8. Assault
Acting quickly, Dave locked in the dimensional coordinates
of B Corp's home base into his wrist computer and then realized
something. There was currently a van en route to the facility,
still some fifty miles away! This would be a great chance to
scout out the opposition. He quickly did some more calculations
and made himself materialize n the rear of the vehicle.
The two women guarding the man on the floor looked at Dave
with confusion and then began to smile. Before they could act,
Dave tried to wipe their minds, but found them to be guarded! He
sensed their intent to kill and increased the power of his mental
attack and broke through the barriers. The eyes of the women went
wide for a split second and they were both dead before Dave could
glimpse into their minds.
At least his maneuver had been soundless. Next, he located
the van's fuel tank and sent the gas elsewhere, subsequently
causing the van to slowly coast to a stop. He heard swearing from
behind the partition and, job accomplished, he teleported himself
and the man back to his homeworld...
9. Preparation
"What do you mean?" Tasna Fasho, the CEO said.
"Just that ma'am. The van was suddenly out of gas and the
subject was gone."
"Damn! I wanted our operations completely secure! Where's
the chief security officer?"
"You've already executed him, ma'am."
"I want all security systems, both inside and out of this
place, activated now!"
"Yes ma'am!" The other said, leaving.
There was only one possible cause. The 'God' that had
supposedly saved hundreds of worlds. He would find a surprise
when he came here, though. Tasna had contacted many of the 'God's
(actually a mutant) enemies and had obtained a very large mass of
an element found in very few dimensions. This was the mutant's
only weakness, and due to its non-harmful attributes, Tasna had
Galolium gas constantly circulating through the base. His
technology, however, was definitely more advanced than previously
thought...
10. Covert Op
Upon returning, Dave saw that his machines had recorded a
commercial (in 27 different languages) that he found disturbing.
However, it also provided him with the opportunity to delay his
frontal assault. He opted for research first, and dialed the
number displayed at the bottom of the screen.
"Hello, this is B Corp. A representative will be with you
shortly."
After about ten minutes, the other end spoke. Dave knew
this to be the time-lag between the two dimensions. "How may I
help you?"
"I saw your ad on TV and it fascinated me. I'd love to have
one!"
"Yes, many do. However, the price tag is still a little
hefty."
"I'm sure that the price won't be a problem."
"Even if, say, the price were $500,000?"
"Even if it were. So what else is there?" (He could easily
obtain any amount, with the use of his powers.)
"Well, we need to know what kind of traits you'd like."
Reluctantly, Dave made the decision to buy-after all; it
was for all intents and purposes human. "About 5'8", medium
length brown hair, skinny, breasts not too large."
"What about personality?"
"Umm... humorous, willing--even eager--to do things I
suggest, intelligent. Is that enough?"
"Yes, Mr. Taylor. Expect your doll in about a week."
"How did you know my name?" He asked, but the line was
already dead.
11. Expansion
"Tasna, we have just discovered a dimensional network of
tribal worlds!"
"Speak plainly around me, Bezel. What is a dimensional
network?"
"We are all familiar with the concepts of parallel worlds.
A planetary network is a grouping of about seven or eight worlds
within three AU of one another. A dimensional network consists of
approximately twenty dimensions, each containing a planetary
network so similar so that it is almost identical to its
neighboring dimensions."
"And you've found one? That's 160 planets! How many tribal
residents does each planet have?"
"About a hundred thousand."
"That's sixteen million people! With that many, our
kidnapping operations on the other worlds could stop! There would
be less suspicion! That bastard mutant would drop it!"
"As we speak, the planets are being conquered."
"Good. Any other news?"
"Our commercial has aired in seven of the nineteen
dimensions and we already have 341 orders--269 more than we have
available."
"That's well above and beyond our expectations. Make sure
we begin shipments as soon as possible. Send me a copy of the
order list."
"Yes."
Bezel left Tasna to think. The list appeared on her desk
almost instantly, each page containing the orders for a different
dimension. She flipped through until one page caught her eye. It
had only two orders on it. Looking to the top of the page, she
was surprised even further--this Earth should have been really
eager for the dolls. Then something else clicked-her sources
telling her about the mutant had described behaviorisms localized
to that dimension!
She leaned in closer to read the names. One was a "Taylor,
Dave" and the other was one "Lucas, Bill." So she wasn't the
luckiest person in the world, but lucky enough for her own
purposes. She called up the production facility.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"I want the two dolls going to Shadow Earth 921174 to be
infused with Galolium and subconscious instructions to secrete it
at opportune moments."
"Yes, ma'am."
Tasna sat back and smiled.
12. Delivery
Bill Lucas ran to answer the doorbell. Standing in front of
it was his doll. The payment had already been taken care of. His
doll--he decided to name her Lindsay--smiled at him and walked
right in. Bill's heart was beating rapidly as he opened his mouth
to speak.
Lindsay, however, put a finger to her lips and advanced
towards him, placing her soft lips over top of Bill's own. He
took a sharp intake of breath and collapsed to the floor,
following which he went into convulsions and died. Lindsay,
following her subconscious instructions, then slit her own
throat.
***
"...where an apparent murder-suicide is currently being
investigated. Bill Lucas, computer programmer, was apparently
murdered by this woman, who subsequently killed herself. No
records whatsoever have been found on her..."
Dave was slightly pleased. The people at B Corp obviously
didn't have correct information, as they had used Galollium
rather than Galolium. He was also slightly worried. They knew
that he lived on Earth, which meant that their sources were
pretty good. But, on the good side again, the death of Bill Lucas
led them to believe that he was dead.
Knowing he had little to fear from B Corp, he took the
'doll' out of confinement and hooked it up to his machines. The
doll's subconscious commands were easily destroyed. He next
extracted the Galollium from her system and disposed of it
safely. He then set the machines to try and find the male mind
that was buried...
13. Strike
"Shit!"
"What is it, officer?" Tasna said.
"Unit 2713 has gone offline!"
"What do you mean?"
"Its programming is gone! It no longer registers on our
roll!"
"So? That signifies death. Obviously the owner wasn't very
good."
"It's the other doll that was sent to the shadow Earth,
ma'am."
"Damn! That complicates things... thought I had received
rumors of his death. Send out a strike force of six people armed
with Galolium to this Dave Taylor...
***
The doorbell didn't even ring. No windows were shattered.
Dave's anti-portal systems were bypassed, allowing the strike
force access. The doll that had been sitting, seemingly offline,
against the wall stood up to reveal a highly advanced gun in each
hand. It got off two shots before the shocked forces could
retaliate. One officer fired and the doll was thrown against the
wall, fingers squeezing the triggers one last time. One shot
missed. The three remaining members split up to search the house.
However, upon walking through a doorway, one was instantly
killed. The other two, still in the room turned around and saw
the third's body, pierced by the spikes that had been hidden in
the doorway. They decided to wait for Dave to come to them, as
they were playing on his turf.
"Make yourself at home, guys. You don't mind if you don't
have air, do you? I need it for an experiment. C-ya." Dave's
voice said as all entrances exits to the room shut.
The men's eyes went wide as a noise like that of a vacuum
began. They were getting short of breath when they raised their
guns and simultaneously fired a powerful blast at the wall. Dave
hadn't designed the wall for that intensity of power, so a hole
to the outside was formed and the men gulped air greedily.
"Gentlemen, this is Home Base. Prepare for teleport.
Target's location has been found in approximately an eleventh
basement."
They shuddered at the tingling accompanying transport and
soon found themselves in a room packed full of machinery. Dave
was slow to turn around and felt the two bullets enter his body.
He turned and fired a blast of power that killed one of the
people and then collapsed to the ground. He spoke a few keywords
and he was teleported away. Just seconds afterwards, there was a
bright flash of light that broke the man's link with his home
base and also put him in a state that only Dave could bring him
out of.
***
3 weeks later, alternate dimension time (real-time, about 2
minutes)
Dave was recovering nicely. At the beginning, he had come
close to death, but was now ready to resume his mission. He had
convinced his duplicate in this world (really, quite a pathetic
and suicidal copy) to go back to his world and take his place.
Dave's duplicate was now weakened to a point near death and was
ready to speak the words that would revive the man. Dave sent his
duplicate away and began fighting B Corp in a more covert
manner...
14. Formulation
Dave could find no leads whatsoever. His sources were doing
him no good. Now that he knew they could harm him and that the
Galollium had been a mistake, he did not immediately want to
launch a direct attack. Then he had an idea--he could get inside
the head of an employee and fight from the inside.
So it was that he penetrated the mental shields of a young
engineer, only to be sent back as the youth died. So he'd have to
be more covert and get in without breaking through the
barricades? He could do that. He soon found the Chief Engineer
and set to work, locating the fluctuation points of the mental
fields. After about a half-hour, Dave had control of the engineer
and began to conceive of plans to damage B Corp.
He finally settled on one that would take a lot of effort
but would be extremely damaging. Being as the Chief Engineer had
access to all tech areas, he would go to the most vital area of
their organization. He created a false excuse and headed towards
the room containing their machine, which generated access points
in many dimensions. He then made his way towards the part of the
machine responsible for the dimensional portals and began adding
to it.
When he was completed with the modifications, he programmed
additional code to make the changes effective. He then used the
base's computer system to locate most of the prisoners and
activated the newly-modified portal device. A dimensional bubble
then appeared around the prison section and locked onto to each
life essence, afterwards transporting the captives to a safe
location. To replace the missing prisoners, Dave brought in the
vilest criminals he could find in neighboring dimensions.
This done, he proceeded to the next step of his plan. He
began to write a computer virus that would eliminate all data of
his modifications and their business records. When completed, he
used their access point generator to open a permanent portal to
this world's sun and activated the computer virus at the same
time. An alarm then went off-a mere five minutes since he had
entered-and a group of guards came in and killed the Chief
Engineer. Dave left as the heat of the sun destroyed the
equipment and killed the soldiers remaining in the room...
15. Reports
"Ma'am?" An officer asked.
"What is it?"
"Your orders have been carried out and the subject has been
captured and changed."
"Did you find out anything useful?"
"Unfortunately no, ma'am. After we captured him, he found a
way to blank his mind."
"At least I no longer have to worry about danger from that
quarter. You are dismissed, officer."
As he left, the new Chief Security Officer entered. "Ma'am,
I have some-err-rather disturbing news."
"What is it?"
"Our Chief Engineer was discovered in our dimensional
access room earlier."
"And..."
"She caused quite a deal of damage. Apparently, she
modified our machinery and used it to open an access point to our
sun. That problem took awhile to solve, as all traces of the
programming had been deleted. So our access points have all been
destroyed as a result, but our operations in the dimensional
network remain unaffected, as they are a natural phenomena."
"That should be enough to satisfy the company's needs for
awhile."
"Except that it doesn't stop there, ma'am. Apparently, our
beloved Engineer also wrote and installed a computer virus into
our entire network of computers which destroyed all of our
business records."
"We'll make up for the losses and can mentally contact the
people on record that have lost orders."
"I'm afraid it's not that simple, ma'am. There was a
completely unintentional side effect of the virus--our
transformation system was also affected. The equipment is not
operating anything like it should be."
"Fix the problem, and in the meantime, take me to the
remains of the room where the portal was opened."
He turned and she followed, eyes turning blood red with
barely contained rage as her face sharpened and became more
angular. A small flame appeared at the tip of her pinky finger...
***
But Dave wasn't done yet. He had broken into the mind of
someone working at the base's armory and had taken some powerful
explosives for 'loading to Dimensional Network Miner Ship 3071A.'
Once at the spacedock, he made the inhabited body invisible and
placed enough explosives to completely destroy the area and cause
the vacuum of space to enter the base.
He had tried to enter the transformation area itself, but
this body didn't have access and the room-and everyone inside of
it-was too heavily shielded. He activated the explosives and
left, his work now done...
***
Tasna was furious. Her hair had turned into flowing fire
and the Chief Security Officer's ashes now lay on the floor at
her feet. Flames also danced from her fingers and she had grown
at least a foot in height. For the security guard that had just
entered, this sight was enough to make him pass out.
From the little remaining presence of the Chief Engineer,
Tasna had discovered a different mental signature fading so
quickly from the remains that even she had almost missed it.
There was no way to examine it further, but she had her
suspicions. By the time the guard had awakened, Tasna had
regained her calm and her appearance was back to normal.
"What is it?"
"Our spaceport has just been destroyed by heavy explosives
of our own manufacture. No trace of the armory guard can be
found."
"It is as I thought, then." Tasna said, as her anger was
renewed and she morphed again. Soon thereafter, there was another
pile of ashes on the floor.
It was that same, never-to-be-damned enough, Dave Taylor
again, it had to be! But how was he able to stand up to her
supreme abilities? Only one other had ever defeated her before!
Thus, this Dave Taylor must be a version of Him that had been
sent to stop her rise. Well, Tasna was by no means about to let
Him win a second time...
16. Turnaround Twice
Dave was appalled that B Corp was still functioning, even
at a slower rate. The damages he had caused should have thrown
them into chaos. They had probably had a second generator, but
that would not explain how they had regained their records. That
is unless the people running B Corp were mentalists, which, as
Dave reflected, was very likely, as they had known his name over
the phone. An all out assault looked like the only way to advance
further. That was, at least, until another was provided for him.
A gateway had opened into his room and stepping through was
a task force of about ten men, leading two people at gunpoint
first. Dave started as he realized who these people were--one was
his girlfriend Michelle and the other was his friend Jason! He
quickly reinforced his mental barriers and conceived of a plan.
"Mr. Taylor, if you would please come with us?"
"What are you talking about? Why do you have my friends?"
"I think you know the answer to that one, Mr. Taylor."
"I'm afraid you're one step ahead of me. And how did you
get in my house? That's breaking and entering!"
"The only thing we broke was a dimensional boundary. We
will have to break more than that, however, if you refuse to
cooperate."
"A dimensional boundary? C'mon, that's science fiction.
What do you want with me?"
"Mr. Taylor, quit playing dumb. We know everything."
"Uh, boss, did you ever stop to consider that he may be
telling the truth?"
"Ensign, did you ever learn to obey orders and not doubt
them?"
"Yes, but I was just thinking-"
"You aren't employed to think. You're employed to follow
orders. Especially if they come directly from Tasna," He said as
he slew the Ensign with a simple mental command. "Now, Mr.
Taylor, where were we?"
"At the point where you tell me what the hell this is all
about."
"I've already answered that. Since you're being stubborn,
I'm afraid that I have no choice but to move on to the next
phase." He began to take out a strange device and then faded
before he could utilize it.
Dave was confused at the disappearance, but took the time
to set his computer to look for records of a Tasna or any name
utilizing all of those letters. While he waited for results, he
contemplated how these people continued to find him. He had
reached no conclusive answers when the computer informed him it
was done. There were only a few listings, but one in particular
caught his eye.
The things he got himself into--who in their right minds
would tangle with such an immense power? Oh well, it was his job
to enforce justice, so enforce it he would...
***
"What are you doing? He could be working on a plan right
now!"
"Why was the Ensign killed?" Tasna replied.
"He refused to obey orders and was a danger to the
mission's success. The longer we remain, the higher the chances
are that Mr. Taylor will be gone when we return."
"Ah, but you understand not his nature. He will do anything
he can to ensure his friends' safety--even if it means he must
sacrifice himself."
"Who in today's world could be so stupid?"
"One of the few who are still uncorrupted. He must fall.
Go."
***
When the force reappeared, its leader was surprised to find
that Dave was waiting. What he didn't know was that Dave was
planning on fighting and had a plan to cover his friends' deaths.
So it was that Dave's blast of tremendous energy left the force
shocked--and reduced to only four people. The leader then
motioned towards Jason and Jason's death followed.
Dave, knowing his machines were functioning properly, let
out another blast, this time killing all but the leader, who
immediately shot Michelle. Dave shrugged and laughed at the
surprised expression on the leader's face. They stood for about a
minute just staring at one another--Dave laughing and the leader
boiling. As anger took full control of the leader, Dave's machine
beeped, informing him that the program had ended.
As Dave prepared to send back the leader, the leader's eyes
went wide from the unearthly powers lending themselves to his
use. The leader's eyes shortly turned red and he turned his
attention towards Dave, who was trying to make a program for
himself in case he died. This was not accomplished before the
computer exploded in front of him. He turned and fired a blast of
power, which was countered by a different blast. The opposing
force was steadily getting closer and Dave teleported himself and
the leader out so that damage to his equipment was kept to a
minimum.
Outside, the battle raged on for over an hour between
blasts of power and hand-to-hand combat. Near the end, the
deserted island Dave had taken them to was barren. Dave wasn't
exhausted and neither was the leader. It was the substance the
leader had that ultimately won the battle- Galolium. It had taken
awhile to neutralize Dave's powers, but when it did, just one
mild blast from the leader took him down. As Dave's eyes closed,
the leader returned to normal, shook himself off, and headed
home...
17. Joy
"Excellent work, Commander." Tasna said.
"To be perfectly honest, ma'am, I don't know how I did it.
From the time Mr. Taylor began staring at me until the time I
returned, I can't remember a thing."
"I know. I see a promotion in the works for you. You are
dismissed."
As he left, Bezel walked in. "Tasna?"
"Yes?"
"I've got great news."
"Well..."
"Our operations are back to 100 percent efficiency and we
have found a dimensional network ready for us to mold as we see
fit. It seems to have been forgotten by Him."
"That is great news. But I've got better news."
"And that would be..."
"Our friendly saboteur has been captured. No more Mr.
Taylor to worry about. Our operations will finally go flawlessly.
"What are your plans for this Mr. Taylor?"
"Nothing more than the worst, old friend. Nothing more than
the worst."
"May I inquire as to what?"
"Yes. You know how our machines can mold the flesh of
anyone to any age? Well, our dear Mr. Taylor is of a line devoted
to the protection of humanity. This line has special powers and
each member cannot die permanently--or age beyond thirty--before
they have a child. Through research done by Mr. Taylor, we have
determined that the only children that count are those coming
from the original body."
"Fascinating."
"Yes, it is. Well, their mind is what is actually long
lived, so what we have planned for Mr. Taylor is far worse than
what we normally do to ones who interfere. We will let him live
through every possible female life imaginable and make sure that
he is aware of it--imprison him within his own mind, shall we
say? And then, when done, we shall let him be a sex slave for all
of my servants for all eternity."
"You are truly evil, Tasna."
"Why, thank you, Bezel."
18. Change
Dave awoke groggily, feeling as he did so that he was being
restrained. There was then a jerking motion and his vision came
into focus. His mind, however, remained foggy. He was moving
forward, towards a machine. There was a flash of recollection
before he entered it, but he soon became too busy fighting the
machine to dwell on it.
At the first attack of the psyche changer, the natural
defenses that Dave had perfected brought his mind to full
awareness. Outside of Dave, nothing spectacular was happening
except for a steadily increasing power transfer. The battlefield
of his mind, however, was a different matter entirely. Within the
swirling mists of memory and senses, in the usually tranquil
field of his subconscious, an immense battle was being fought.
Dave fought with all his might, and the machine was forced
to draw all power available to itself just to keep up the battle.
As Dave weakened, it drew power from the base's life support and
gravity generators. As Dave lost the battle, he lost
consciousness, and as he continued on the conveyor, he left a
firm, lasting blow behind him--the machine had exploded. This,
however, did not stop his progress and his transformation
continued.
***
"Ma'am?"
"What is it?"
"The subject is undergoing the bodily changes now but the
psyche changer exploded after his passage through it."
"Even with his weakness, he remains a problem. Damn!"
"His mind was altered though, and he is trapped within his
mind. All tests are positive and show his new body to be fully
human, with no traces of his former powers."
"Good. But that will still delay production of further
units for a good three months." Tasna replied, setting fire to
the officer.
She took a small pleasure in his screams of pain.
19. New Lives
Dave was indeed, trapped in his own mind. Looking back,
however, he saw that his prison was not as limited as the others'
had been. Rather than being restricted to one room, Dave's prison
was six rooms large. In the center chamber, Dave could hear, see,
feel, smell, and taste everything that his new body could. Each
of the five rooms branching off of it corresponded to a single
sense. There was also a hatch in the center of the central
chamber, but Dave had closed it upon opening it, not quite ready
for his attack yet. When he had opened it previously, he had
discovered the rest of his mind, but it came through and began
trying to take his stronghold. Until he felt certain of victory,
he decided to play it safe and stay imprisoned.
***
And so Dave waited, building up strength until an assault
would be successful. Through the life of a child to adulthood, he
waited. Through the life of a prostitute, he waited. Through the
life of a teenage mother he waited. Through the life of a woman
in a third-world country he waited. And the waiting went on,
until he became the companion of a super-intelligent girl who had
no friends.
He had weakened a spot in his prison that was located next
to the body's control center and broke through silently. Having
been able to save the extra power that would have been used had
he taken the direct approach, he took control easily. He put the
manufactured identity in an inescapable prison of his own making,
deciding to go along with this life until he found the
opportunity to assault B Corp. However, he already noticed one
flaw-the safety measures installed to keep track of a unit. Well,
he had an idea for those.
Laura (the genius whom he was assigned to) was planning an
experiment that Dave saw a way to improve and solve one of his
problems at the same time. He suggested a few modifications
(after all, this unit was 'programmed' to aid when possible) and
although she gave him an odd look, she made the changes. Dave
sensed his freedom immediately as the machine was turned on. And
being free from B Corp's surveillance, Dave spoke to Laura.
"Laura, do you remember the company you got me from?"
"Yes. It was a very useful service."
"What if I told you that their services are illegal?"
"You'd have to prove it."
"Do you remember the string of unsolved disappearances
awhile back?"
"No."
"Ah, yes, you wouldn't. Forgot that this is my fifth
lifetime so far. Well, B Corp was responsible for those."
"I still don't see where you're going or what proof you've
got."
"I can put your doubts to rest if we go to Flint, Michigan.
I'll explain on the way."
"Okay." She said, leading Dave to the car.
"You ready for the explanation?"
"Shoot."
"Are you familiar with the man who diffused many
potentially dangerous situations back in the late 20th and early
21st centuries?"
"Who isn't?"
"Well, that man is me. B Corp, when they were first
beginning, kidnapped lonely, depressed, and divorced men who
needed happiness by means of a deceiving e-mail. I was not one of
those, but I was one who opposed them, as a police officer who
had been taken requested my help. He too, had opposed them. You
see, what they do to ones who fight is worse than what they do to
those who don't. They give the worst fate to those that openly
assault them. I fought them covertly, but their ambition is deep
and they found me. I defeated their first task force, but it was
their second that got me. My mind is long-lived, as I am of a
line of mutants, so this allowed them to transfer my mind each
time a body died. As I said before, this is my fifth."
"So you live forever, do you?"
"Under ordinary circumstances, no. We become capable of
dying after we have a child. However, this must happen in our
original form, so as to pass on the powers to the next
generation. If my home still stands, I should be able to return
to my body."
"How so?"
"The technology that I've developed is a lot more advanced
than even technology today. I had one of my machines prepare a
duplicate body of myself for eventualities such as this or in the
case of my body dying."
"I thought you said you couldn't die until you had a
child."
"My only weakness can counteract that rule. It is an
element found only outside of our galaxy and our dimension. In
this case, I would die and my powers would find a suitable
candidate to carry on the line, and would grant him or her the
necessary knowledge."
"You've convinced me, but I want to see you back to normal
so that you may fight them. Also er-maybe-er-could you possibly,
er..."
"If I could possibly what?"
"If you could possiblymarrymeonceyougetbackinyourownbody?"
"Slow down a bit there. Run that by me again, if you
would?"
"Er, could you possibly marry me once you get back in your
body?"
"You'd be obliged to help fight them too, you know."
"That's fine, but why?"
"In order to protect the wife or husband of the mutant,
they are granted the same powers. Of course, with the powers come
the responsibility."
"That's perfectly all right. You are just amazing! A lesser
person would probably be insane by now, but you haven't cracked!
But what'll happen to the body you're in now?"
"The persona I displaced will regain control and will live
a natural life."
"I see. What is keeping B Corp from discovering your
deception?"
"Those changes to your machine that I influenced this body
to make. In addition to increasing its efficiency, it also
created an imperceptible feedback loop that allowed me to take
control. It was so short a loop that only the most detailed
search of records would notice, and I plan to be fighting again
before that happens."
And they drove to Michigan...
20. Return
...where Laura was disappointed to see a park. However,
when Dave woke up, he smiled. His house was still intact. He
spoke the codewords to deactivate the hologram and the park faded
away as his house took on firmness. Not having expected anything
of this magnitude, Laura gasped.
He smiled and spoke more codewords and after a detailed
examination of his mind, the door opened. Stepping inside, he saw
that the remnants of his last battle were still untouched. (He
had had plenty of time to think about his future plans during his
imprisonment.) Satisfied, he led Laura to the elevator, where he
typed in the passcode for his most secure level.
Upon the opening of the elevator doors, Laura gasped again.
The technology was probably still centuries ahead of today! Dave
then walked over to a desk and began moving his fingers over the
top of it. As he did so, a panel on the wall slid aside and a
slab with a clothed body on it came out.
"Laura, could you head into the next room and follow the
instructions that my computer will give you?"
"Sure."
So she did, and Dave continued the preparations for his
transfer. An IV came down from the ceiling and was inserted into
the body. Shortly thereafter, it began to purge the preservatives
from the body and replace it with some of Dave's original blood.
After awhile, the progress seemed to have stopped, so Dave went
on to the next stage.
A lance of green light came down from the ceiling and
enveloped Dave's head. He felt a tingling all through his body,
which quickly turned to extreme pain. Looking to the progress
monitors, he saw that there was extreme resistance. He turned up
the power, and after an agonizing five seconds, he opened his
eyes to find himself back in his own body. True to his
hypothesis, he was quite hungry, and no sooner did he realize
this than Laura walked in.
She set the food next to him and he ate. She was shocked at
his handsomeness--what would a guy like that see in her? Besides,
he had described himself as a mutant, which normally implied an
unnatural appearance. Well, she couldn't complain. Dave then
leaped from his floating slab, bringing Laura out of her
thoughts. She gasped as he disappeared and then screamed at the
touch of hands on her neck. Turning, she saw that it was merely
Dave.
"Ready to get married?" He asked.
"Huh? Now? We haven't made any preparations!"
"Will those really be necessary?" He said, leading her back
to the elevator.
Upon exiting the elevator this time, they found themselves
outside, with the d?cor of a wedding surrounding them. Chairs
were set up and there was an altar in front of them. Laura looked
over at Dave to protest, but then the guests began arriving. They
came up to congratulate Laura and Dave and Laura was astounded to
actually feel their touch.
"Is this real?"
"Yes, Laura. Well, at least the people are. The location is
a prefabricated site that is set to my ideal climate. I told you
my technology was very advanced."
"Yes, but I never imagined anything like this!"
"You don't like it?"
"Oh, no, I love it! I just didn't realize how advanced you
were talking about. So when's the wedding starting?"
"In about ten minutes."
"But what about our outfits?"
"Already taken care of. Look down. See? I've covered all
the bases. Now just relax."
She did, and the wedding went without a hitch.
21. Plan
"So what's our plan of attack?"
"The past."
"Time travel?"
"It's not as complicated as it sounds. It is merely an
advancement of the portal technology."
"But won't we be creating a paradox?"
"No. Tell me, how do you view time, Laura?"
"As an ongoing line. An infinite number of alternate
branches must exist, for each action done/not done, in the way it
was done, or in the time it was done."
"Very good. However, time is a little more complex. Time is
sentient. Not living, per se, but capable of recognizing and
correcting major flaws."
"So why hasn't it corrected the B Corp problem itself?"
"A major flaw constitutes something dangerous to time
itself."
"Like a paradox."
"Right, but in our case, we will be exempt from any
paradox. Because we will be traveling to correct a flaw and
because of our abilities, time will not try to stop us. Also as a
result of our powers, we will be unaffected by the changing of
the past--in other words, we will still know and be married to
each other, although I will have always been myself. We will
retain our memories of this as well."
"What if time doesn't actually correct paradoxes?"
"What do you mean?"
"Isn't it possible that two unconnected timelines are
formed at the spot of a paradox?"
"At one time I believed that, too. However, from a past
experience, I learned that time does, in fact correct itself--
sometimes too much. I've seen reality fluctuate from time healing
itself."
"Oh. So what are our plans once we arrive in the past, and
how far back are we going?"
"Our main goal, of course, will be to travel to the origin
of B Corp. However, I do not know if I'm capable of finding that
time. In that case, we will fight them during the time when they
thought I was imprisoned in my own mind."
"I see."
"Let's go, then."
***
Something was happening that didn't feel right to Tasna.
Her facility then suddenly flickered and returned to normal. It
continued to flicker back and forth, and as it did so, she
recognized her former domain. It was a good thing she was
sensitive to fluctuations in time, as this had given her
forewarning. She summoned in a technician.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"What is the status of the Taylor unit?"
"Still functioning perfectly."
"What of Mr. Taylor's mind prison?"
"Still intact, with him trapped inside."
"Any signs of any recent mental conflict?"
"No, nothing has been... wait... ah, here's one. It was for
a very short period of time, almost small enough not to be
measurable."
"What is Mr. Taylor's mental condition?"
"Very weak. Apparently, he tried to conduct an assault to
regain his mind, but the immensity of our programming must have
shocked him. He is cowering."
"Could this be a deception?"
"I do not believe so, ma'am."
"How sure are you?"
"Just about 100 percent, ma'am."
"Very well then. You are dismissed."
Tasna sat back. Who else could it be but Mr. Taylor? Had he
surrendered his powers, so that they would go to another worthy
candidate? But no, that wasn't possible--his powers only existed
when his mind occupied his body. A different member of his line
that none of her sources knew of? This was so frustrating! Just
hundreds of years ago, she could have known these things
instantly! Now, it looked as if she'd have to give up her
newfound freedom and relinquish causing chaos directly. However,
she hadn't fought so hard just to be put back! She would just be
ready, in all times, at all times for the attack she knew was
coming...
22. Travel
DAVE TAYLOR.
"Yes?" He responded, quite shaken. Time had never spoken
before.
BE CAREFUL. YOU ARE THE BEST GAURDIAN REALITY EVER
HAD.
"I will be."
THINGS WILL NOT GO AS YOU EXPECT. BE PREPARED FOR THE
WORST. DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE PREPARING TO DO BATTLE
WITH?
"I have an idea that's supported by evidence I've
gathered."
THAT IS GOOD. AID WILL COME IF POSSIBLE. THINGS WILL
BE SET ARIGHT."
"Okay. What about working with a paradox for me?"
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN MIND?
"Send Laura back to the start of B Corp and have her fight
there. Send me to anytime during the period of my imprisonment
and let me fight there. Allow the paradox to form and begin to
ripple reality and then correct it so that B Corp never came into
being."
WHAT CAN BE DONE WILL BE DONE. NO GARUNTEES MAY BE
GIVEN, AS THAT WOULD DISRUPT TIME.
And so Laura went far into the past as Dave went slightly
back in time...
***
Laura emerged on a blasted plain. A short distance away was
a large door standing open. Massed around this were many
creatures and humanoid beings. On the other side, Laura glimpsed
a reddish glow and felt heat coming from it. Looking closer,
Laura could see demons attempting to come through the doorway.
Sensing she was in the right place, she rushed forward and joined
the forces of good...
***
Dave emerged in his mansion. Looking quickly at his
electronic clock, he saw that it was currently sometime during
his second term of imprisonment. He began preparing for his
assault, taking every possible precaution so as to avoid a loss.
He had a hunch about what would happen then if Laura won her
struggle in the past. As time doesn't seem to mess with the
agendas of his line, Laura's win and his own loss would create a
huge paradox, the results of which Dave didn't even want to
guess. A short while later, he entered B Corp's main facility...
***
The battle had been going nicely until one lone individual
joined in the fray. Slowly, Tasna's forces were being pushed back
into their fiery domain. Looking closely, she was amazed to see
that it was a human! She spent no more time dwelling on this,
however, as she was forced to move back even further.
Regrouping her forces into a new formation, she pressed
forwards with a surprise attack that gained back much lost
ground. She had little time to revel in her minor victory,
however, as the opposing force regrouped and began to push her
back once more. She was down to her last move, which she had been
holding back for desperate times, as she was uncertain of whether
or not it would work.
So it was that she sent out her disguised agents into the
opposing force and turned the tides again as the forces of 'good'
turned and attacked their comrades. She pressed onwards as her
unnoticed helpers converted more soldiers to her cause. Soon, she
would be through, and the doorway unto the physical world would
open for her to spread chaos...
***
Laura noticed the conversion of good to evil, but was
focusing her attention on one main point--the doorway. Using her
enhanced vision, she searched endlessly for weaknesses that she
could utilize to collapse the door before the forces of evil
fully escaped.
After feeding more power to her search, she found a very
small crack in the frame. Seeing that the door was made of dark
energy, she knew that pure energy would work best to destroy the
door frame. Laura then stopped fighting in the battle itself,
converted her power to pure energy, and focused it on the crack.
The door began to waver, and when it solidified again, it
had become a sphere. The forces of evil were now slowly being
pulled towards the sphere, which still lead to their realm. Laura
increased the intensity of her power, ignoring the pain the extra
power sent through her body. The sphere began to shrink, and the
forces of evil were pulled back even faster.
Laura dug her feet into the ground as the forces of good
vanished. The sphere continued to shrink and soon all the forces
of evil but Tasna were returned to their domain. As Laura
increased the power of her attack once more, Tasna fired a futile
blast of power at her. The sphere's sucking was now very intense
and the bolt of power curved around and hit Tasna, throwing her
