Carl and Don walked out the door and waved back at the two young
rangers standing on the porch waiving back.
"Thanks guys, I'm sure we can find the campsite with these directions,"
Carl said as he and his friend Don walked quickly away from the rangers
cabin.
"It is clearly posted when you get there. Backcountry site 4 you can't
miss it if you stay on the trail. Remember to stay on the trail," the
ranger called out as the two hikers stepped off the porch.
"Man, those guys must be desperate for company," Don whispered as soon
as he was sure they were out of earshot of the cabin.
"Yeah, that Charley guy must have told us to five times to come by the
ranger cabin if we needed anything. I was starting to wonder if they
might be a little light in the loafers," Carl chuckled.
"Can you believe that crap they tried to lay down about 'weird shit'
happening out here in the woods since the Baile's Comet passed by?"
Don asked at they cut up the ridge and headed North.
"Forget it, we are clear of them and everyone else for at least the
next 3 days," Carl answered.
They continued hiking for several more hours stopping at some of the
nicer locations to get pictures and catch their breath. As the sun
started descending toward the horizon they approached the backcountry
campsite the rangers had pointed out for them on the map.
When they neared the site they noticed 2 tents were already set up and
some camping gear was scattered about like the occupants had left in a
hurry. They approached carefully and looked the place over.
"I don't see any blood," Carl said poking at the now cold fire pit with
his walking stick.
"You are so morbid sometimes," Don pointed out. He suddenly froze in
his tracks as he opened one of the tents and looked inside. "Dude you
better look at this."
Carl rushed over and looked inside the tent. There was a sleeping back
and pack along with some men's clothes lying out. It took a second look
for Carl to realize what Don was talking about. The front of the shirt
on the floor was torn and the buttons were gone or hanging loosely. The
pants had rips down the sides as well and there was a strange, not

They quickly moved over to check the other tent. In it they found

"You think this might be that 'weird shit' the rangers were talking
about? Could these campers have disappeared?" Don asked.
"If there were people missing up here they wouldn't have let us hike
out here. Shit, they would have people all over the mountain looking
for them," Carl replied.
"What do you want to do? Do we camp here or what?"
"I don't see why not. Whatever happened here is none of our business.
We just let Ranger Bob and his buddy know about what we found when we
leave. Right now it is getting dark and we need to set up our own
campsite. Lets set up over there near that old oak."
They headed over and set up their tents and quickly gathered wood for a
small fire at the fire pit near the tree. The sun slipped behind the
ridge and the sky quickly filled with stars as they stretched out next
to the fire. The smell of beans and pork soon filled the air.
"Do you hear something?" Carl asked as he stood up and started looking
around.
"Heh, those rangers don't have you spooked do they buddy?" Don
snickered and poked the fire.
"No, listen, I hear a humming noise. Don't you hear it?"
"Hmm, now that you mention it, yes. Some kind of buzzing and it is
coming from ... " Don turned slowly then pointed up into the old oak
they had set up their tents next to.
As they both looked up they could see a number of small red lights
Swirling around up in tree. Occasionally one of the lights would swoop
down toward the fire then back up toward the others.
"Bees, a freaking bees nest. You get me all worked up for some bees?"
Don complained as he sat back down.
"Don, how many bees do you know that glow in the dark? I mean I know I
am not the worlds authority on bees, but I don't think they are
supposed to glow like that," Carl said as he began to back carefully
away from the tree.
"So they are some kind of crossbreed with the local fireflies. Who
cares? They are still just bees."
At that moment one of the logs in the fire popped loudly and filled the
sky with a shower of tiny embers. Within seconds the bees were
descending toward the fire and the two campers. Carl dove for his tent
and made inside with only a single sting to his butt before he was able
to get the cover closed. Don on the other hand had to get up and run to
escape the angry onslaught and received several wounds to accelerate

The angry little insects for about an hour till it had died down to

They retired to their tents and zipped them closed.
