My original intent for this story was to have several "episodes" to work through Tony/Toni's adjustment to her situation. I usually don't like to read long stories. So, I tried to keep it in short little bits, but it seems that it got out of hand. The original part VI didn't sit well with me or the readers. I had intended it to be an ending, but not necessarily the end of the story. This version pulls parts I through VI together into one document, and smooths some transitions. Tiffany found Toni lying on the floor surrounded by pills which had spilled onto the floor when she collapsed. "Please, no! Don't do this to me, babe!" Tiffany cried feeling for a pulse. She barely found one. She quickly ran to the phone to dial 9-1-1 trembling at the sight in her bathroom. The ambulance arrived and rushed Toni to the university hospital where she was listed in critical condition. Tiffany could only wait in the waiting room crying. She had just met the most beautiful woman in the world, and now, she was on the verge of losing that wonderful person. "How is she doin'" Bobby asked as he arrived. "This is your fault, you know?" Tiffany scolded, but when she saw Bobby's face, she changed her tone. "Not good." she said remorsefully. "They're giving her a 30 percent chance." "She's a fighter though." Bobby tried to comfort. "Yeah, when she was a guy and wanted to continue on. Now, I'm afraid, she's hoping for death." The doctor walked in. "She's stable now. You can go in if you want. She's in a coma. So, don't expect any response." "Thank you." Tiffany said, and she and Bobby headed to Toni's room. "Ten minutes." the nurse coldly said. "Yeah, thanks" Tiffany confirmed. She walked over to Toni and held her hand. "Hey, babe. Don't you go and die on me. I've barely gotten to know you. You're just such a special person. It really is not that bad... I need you. Please, don't leave me so soon." She broke down in tears and Bobby did his best to console her. The nurse came in to usher Tiffany and Bobby out of the room. Tiffany looked at Toni. "I love you. I'll be here waiting for you." she said. "You look beat." Bobby said. "Why don't you let me take you home so you can get some food and rest?" "Thanks, but I'm staying here." Tiffany insisted. "Are you sure?" "Yeah." "Ok, I've got some things to sort out. I'll see you in the morning.", and with that, Bobby headed out the door. About an hour later, Tiffany was awakened by a nurse. "Ms. Reed?" "Uh?" "Would you like to come with me?" "What's wrong? Is she dead?" Tiffany jumped to her feet. "No, she's still fine. I just thought you might like to stay by her bedside." the nurse said. "But the other nurse..." "Don't mind her. I have you set up with a blanket and some pillows." "Thank you." Tiffany smiled. The rest of the night she kept vigil at Toni's bedside. Morning came with little to no change in Toni's state. Tiffany had decided to stay through the morning, but the nurse was insistent that she go home and get some rest and food. Finally, Tiffany headed home. When she got home, she fell down on her bed and cried herself to sleep. V: The Search for Tony Bobby woke up unusually early on Monday morning. He was bothered by what had happened and needed to find a way to make things right. "What happened to you?" Professor Amhad asked when she saw Bobby in the lab. "Me." was his singular reply. "I don't think I understand." she confessed, "but I understand if you don't want to discuss it... Let's finish this cataloging. That might help you forget about it." Bobby and the professor worked on finishing the cataloging, but Bobby was having trouble focusing on the task. Finally, he broke the silence. "Ok, I give up!" he said backing away from the table. "Please?" the professor inquired. "I give up." Bobby continued. "I've done something that has ruined someone's life because of my own selfishness." "Well, if you want to tell me about it, I'll listen." Professor Amhad said with her curiosity peaked. "I can't promise any answers if that is what you need though." "Well, you know that jug of water?" Bobby inquired. "Yes... Robert, what did you do?" the professor said sternly. "I took a couple of vials home. I used them to turn my roommate into a girl so that I could get this other girl." "How, exactly, does turning your roommate into a girl help you get another girl?" "Well, this other girl likes threesomes. So, I needed a girl to attract her." "And what happened?" "Well, everything was going great. Then... Honestly, I thought I was dreaming..." "So, let me see if I have this straight." Professor Amhad interjected. "You turned your roommate into a girl to lure another girl into your bed, and then managed to have sex with your roommate while he was a she?" "Yeah, and he's stuck. I tired the other vial on him, and there was no change." "I told you that would happen." she scolded. "I'm very disappointed. I thought you to be more responsible." "Yeah, but I never planned..." "Ah, the best laid plans..." "Yeah, yeah, I know. Well, to make matters worse, he's in a coma now from an overdose on painkillers." Bobby finalized. "He tried to kill himself?" "Yeah." "That's no good. Will he make it." "If he was still Tony with a Y, I would say 'yes', but I don't know now. He's really freaked. I wish there was something..." Bobby drifted in remorse. "I wish I could help." the professor said with a thoughtful pause. "Wait a minute. There is a myth out of the depths of Southeast Asia. It has never been proven, but..." The professor explained to Bobby of a potential solution. She reiterated that it was still just a myth, but she did say that once was the case as well for the fountain that produced the water in the jug. The question that she had was weather the mythical herb would work on someone changed by the fountain water. Bobby insisted that he must find it. He owed that much to his former friend. "I'll see what I can arrange, but I'd suggest you finish your schooling first" "I won't be able to focus on that knowing I might be able to make things right for him." Bobby insisted. Tiffany was awoken by the ringing of the phone. "Hello?" she groaned. "Tiff, it's Bobby." the voice said. "What's wrong." she said thinking the worst. "Nothing." he calmed. "I think I may have a way to change Toni back into a guy. It's a longshot, and I will have to leave the country to find it, but I've got to do it." "Are you sure it will work?" "No, but I've got to try." Bobby added. "So, how is she supposed to cope until then if she makes it through this?" "She'll find a way." Beep... "Bobby, I have another call coming in." she switched. "Hello?" "Ms. Reed?" the new voice said. "Yes?" "Could you come to the hospital, please?" "Is everything ok?" Tiffany asked nearly crying. "She's making a little progress." the voice informed. "Thank, you." She switched back to Bobby. "Bobby, Toni may be coming out of it." "Good." he said. "I have to follow up on a lead that Professor Amhad gave me. Tell, him I'm working on bringing him back." "I'm not sure if that would be good, but I'll see if it feels right to tell her." "Just do it, please. It might give him something to hold on to." Bobby said before he hung up the phone. Tiffany got up and dressed. She made it to the hospital in near record time. "This way Ms. Reed." the nurse guided. He led Tiffany to Toni's room. Toni was lying there much the same as Tiffany had left her. "Toni, dear." Tiffany said holding her hand. "Can you hear me?" She burst into tears when Toni weakly squeezed her hand. "Thank God! You have to pull through this, babe." Tiffiany sobbed. "You're too wonderful for this. I'm not sure if I should tell you this, but Bobby is leaving the country to try to find a way to change you back." Tiffany could not hold back her tears when a lone tear fell down Toni's cheek. "She needs to rest." the nurse said. Tiffany left the room and waited in the waiting room for more news. Several hours passed before Tiffany decided to get up and get something to eat. She decided that the hospital cafeteria would be good enough. When she got back into the waiting room, it was getting to be early evening, and there was still no new news. Tiffany began to think about the events of the past few days. She couldn't believe that she was feeling so attached to this woman that she barely knew, but it just felt right. She knew it was love, but she didn't know what kind. Toni was definitely gorgeous and a terrific lover, but Tiffany needed to know that the romance could be there too. Then there was the possibility that Bobby would find a way change her back to the guy she supposedly had been. Could she love Tony as much as Toni? It was tough for Tiffany to sort out her feelings, but she knew, in her heart, that something special was going to happen with her new friend. She needed to ride it out to find out what it was though. "Ms. Reed." the nurse said waking the sleeping Tiffany. "Come with me." The nurse led Tiffany to Toni's room, and Tiffany screamed with delight to see Toni propped up in the bed and alert. "Thank God!" she cried. "I thought I lost you." She ran to Toni's side to hug her. "Have you been here the whole time?" Toni weakly asked. "Yeah, I've been worried about you, dear." "Thank you. You didn't..." "Yes, I did." Tiffany interrupted. "You are the most fascinating person I have met in a long time. I couldn't let you slip away." Tiffany stayed in the room that night with Toni. Morning light came, and Toni was the first to awaken. She looked at the petite blonde in the seat next to her. She felt grateful to her. Toni began to think in her mind about her life as it was now. Sure, Bobby was out looking for a "cure", but she knew she couldn't put all her hopes on his success. She had to be strong and pull through this no matter what was lost. She at least owned it to her new friend. As she had done as Tony, she tried thinking of school to help her cope with the situation and soon found that it all came back easily. Maybe, it was coming back easier. She couldn't tell. Bobby did say that the water would turn him into his ideal woman. If that was true, not only was she now a gorgeous 5' 10" brunette, she would also be a genius of Einsteinesque proportion. She smiled at the possibilities of what she could do if it was indeed true. "Anthony?" Toni was snapped out of her thoughts by an all too familiar voice. "Anthony? Is that really... really you?" "Mom?!" Toni was baffled to see the woman she had known as her mother when she was a man. "Oh, my God, Tony. It's true." the lady said crying. "I can't believe it." "How did you?..." Toni was interrupted by Tiffany waking up. "Mom, this is my friend Tiffany. Tiffany, this is, or was, my mom." "Was? Honey, I think I still am your mom." Toni's mom said gathering herself. "Bobby told me all about it, but I thought you boys had gotten high or in some trouble or something. Look at you." Toni couldn't look her mom in the eye. She was ashamed as her mom had always been openly pleased that her first-born was a son. Toni's mom walked up to her and put her hand under Toni's chin. "Let me look at you." She examined Toni's face. Toni could feel her mom peering into her soul. "You are going to have so much to learn, my dear, but you are a stronger person than you gave yourself credit for. I would have missed you dearly." Toni's mom kissed her on the forehead. "Mom, what about dad?" Toni asked quietly. "I haven't told him yet. I wanted to see what was going on for myself. Don't worry, dear. It may rough for him as first, but he's stronger than you may think. Besides, this was an accident. It's not like you did this by choice. He'll adjust. We all will. We are just glad you are alive, and with luck, that lowlife roommate of yours will be able to clean up his mess." "Thanks... Mom, I love you." Toni said somewhat shocked at her mom's response to the situation. She couldn't help but wonder though how different her family would view her and how long the I-love-you-no-matter-what attitude would prevail. "I love you too, sweetie. Now, rest up. We want to be able to take you home as soon as we can." "Yes, ma'am." VI: A New Toni Toni was finally released from the hospital the following weekend. Her mom and Tiffany took her back to her apartment to get her things, but Toni insisted on staying. Bobby was gone, and she'd have the place to herself. Her mom didn't feel that was safe given her state of mind. So, she arranged to stay for a week or two with her daughter. Toni just stared at herself. She still couldn't believe what she saw in the mirror. In a way, she'd hoped to wake up from this nightmare of being a woman, but her mom and Tiffany were right. She had to go on. She felt guilty about her attempt to take her life. It began to feel like an insult to the women she knew. Then again, none of them had been a guy just a few days before. They had known nothing of being a man. She sighed. "You ok, dear?" she heard her mom ask. "Yes, ma'am." Toni said forlornly. "I just still can't believe this has happened." "Well, dear, it has, and we'll just have to work on helping you adjust." she consoled. She hugged her new daughter. "You'll find there are some perks to being a woman, and with your looks..." her mom trailed off. Her looks were the one thing that really bothered Toni. She was having trouble accepting the fact that men would be finding her irresistible. However, her mom's comment got her wheels turning. Maybe there was a way to turn this into a positive. If she was going to be stuck like this, she might as well use the assets she had to her advantage. "I suppose you are right, mom." Toni said. "Where do we start?" "Well, I think we need to make a change in your wardrobe to start. We should get rid of your old clothes, save a few t- shirts, just to help with your acceptance of the situation. Once Tiffany gets here..." "Hello?" they heard Tiffany call. "... We'll head to the mall." her mom concluded. "How are you, Toni?" Tiffany asked. "Ok. I suppose. Could be worse, right?" Toni replied with a false enthusiasm. She was not looking forward to what the women had in store for her. When they got to the City Center, the three women headed off on their mission. Toni was in a state of confusion. There were so many choices. She was pleased that the women let her buy some boyish clothes, but their insistence on having skirts and dresses as well was very distressing. What would she need that stuff for anyhow? The day had been long. Tiffany and Toni's mom had been enjoying themselves almost too much. As for Toni, she was glad it was over. One hour of shopping was too much in her mind, but six was totally excessive. She knew her dad would freak at the next credit card bill, but that was of little concern to her as she felt famished by the day's events. After dinner at Max and Erma's, they headed home to Toni's apartment. It was not long after they had put away Toni's new wardrobe that it truly sank in. Tony was gone, probably forever, and Toni had let it happen. She was getting depressed again, and her mom could see it. "Honey, are you ok?" "Yeah, I guess." Toni was distant. "Tiffany." Toni's mom called. "Did you get that stuff I asked for." "Yes, I did." Tiffany walked in with a paper with some scribbles on it. "Here you go." "Here, sweetie. I had Tiffany get your assignments just in case you needed something to take your mind off of things for a while." Toni's mom knew her son well. He had always buried himself in school work when he got the slightest bit depressed. She hoped that it would still work and that it would be enough. Toni worked for the next four hours studying her missed assignments. Her mind was fully at work on the task at hand. Soon, things felt sort of normal for her. She had forgotten about everything that had gone on over the past few days. In fact, she was happy. Happy to be working again. After finishing the assignments Tiffany had obtained, she showered and headed to bed. Monday morning broke with Toni getting up to go to her 8:00 am Thermo-Dynamics class. Then it dawned on her. She would stand out if she showed up to class all of the sudden. All those guys in her class would wonder where the hot babe came from and where she was all quarter. She didn't know what to do. "Mom?" She peered into the room where her mom was sleeping. "Are you up?" "Yeah, what is it?" "I can't go to class like this. I'll be too obvious. I mean if it was the beginning of the quarter or if..." "Don't worry dear. We got everything taken care of with the university and your professors with the help of Bobby's professor. You are cleared to finish the semester by completing your work at home and visiting one-on-one with your professors. Next quarter, you will be enrolled as a young woman and can got to class as usual." "Well, I guess there are only one more week left. I'll survive." Toni walked away somewhat dejected. She had always preferred to go to class so that she could focus her reading on more advanced topics. She'd been trying to develop some theories on alternative propulsion systems. Now she'd have to cover the basics on her own as well for the next couple of weeks. They spent the next few days, much to Toni's chagrin, teaching Toni some of the finer points of womanhood. She was forced to apply her make-up until it met with her mom's approval. That took nearly three hours a day at first. The dressing and the walking in heels was not very difficult as she had managed that rather well on that fateful day over a week ago. Toni had a hard time concentrating on her posture and presentation. While she had been up on fashion fairly well as a guy, she had always had a slight unkempt look to her. That Friday evening Tiffany literally drug Toni out of the apartment. Toni was not comfortable in the clothes the two women insisted she wear, but she saw little use in fighting it. Sooner or later she'd have to wear some of this feminine stuff. "You have to get out sooner or later. I think it is better sooner." Tiffany tried to reason. "Anyhow, I know a place where we can go and guys won't be staring at you." When they got to the bar, Toni was not sure she wanted to go in. "A gay bar?" Toni asked more shocked than she should have. "Of course, where else can a girl like you go an not be ogled by the guys?" "Yeah, but..." "No buts. We'll just go in and unwind. You need it." Tiffany commanded. The girls spent the evening dancing, drinking, and sharing their secrets and desires. Tiffany was beginning to see that she and Toni were going to be good friends, but she somehow felt that Toni would never fully accept her as a lover. That didn't bother Tiffany though. She felt that Toni was going to take her places, and she didn't want to miss the ride. The girls got home and headed to Toni's room. The two of them lay on Toni's bed with Tiffany nestled into Toni's side. They were both lost in their thoughts as they tried to fall asleep. Toni couldn't help but think about how wonderful this girl beside her was, but try as she might, Toni couldn't feel that special spark. She didn't know for sure if Tiffany wanted that or not, but she didn't want to hurt her friend. She knew she needed her if she was to make it through this new life. Toni was the first to wake the Saturday morning before finals. She sat down with the paper, and while reading the classifieds, it hit her. The ad said: "Seeking attractive men and women for fashion exhibit..." It seemed to be perfect, and it just might be the medicine to help her adjust to her new reality. Besides, with moderate success, she might be able to start her own engineering firm sooner than expected. Some of the dreams she had as Tony might actually be easier to obtain with the right people to help her. She thought of Tiffany and her business sense. They'd be the perfect partners. She smiled while she waited for Tiffany to wake and share her ideas for the future. Perhaps, her life wasn't so bad after all.
