The woman behind the desk looked like any other woman in any other gym in
any other city in any other world. Nondescript, with perhaps a slight
cast of light beauty on her face, making her enough to briefly capture
one's attention, yet not memorable enough to stay there. Her brown hair
was done up in a ponytail, and she wore the black-and-red polo shirt
common to the employees of this popular chain of gyms.
She smiled as he entered the room, and drew his membership card along the
card reader behind the desk. Sure enough, he was one of the ones who she
had been waiting for, and as she handed his card back to him, she said,
quite audibly, "Hafay kuhdwur katshur."
The man, who had begun walking away as soon as the card was in his hand,
turned back and said, slightly confused, "I'm sorry?"
Looking back up, she put on an innocent smile and said, "I said, 'Have a
good workout, sir.'"
He paused. "Oh." Shaking his head slightly, he turned back towards the
locker room.

Alex walked out from the locker room, grimacing slightly at the layer of
sweat and stink that seemed to have permeated it. He made a mental note
to mention it to the girl on the way out. Then again, he thought,
somewhat amused as he caught a whiff of his gray T-shirt, I'm not exactly
spring-time fresh myself. I should probably just chalk the odor up as
being part and parcel of being inside a gym.
As he approached the main workout area, he was pleased to see that one of
the treadmills were free. Friday nights, gotta love 'em, he thought.
Everyone else is out partying, so I can get a nice 40-minute jog done
without waiting an equal amount of time for the damn treadmills to get
clear.
He removed his MP3 player from the pocket of the light blue workout sweats
he was wearing. Slipping earphones on his head, he stepped onto the
treadmill.

"Ka-blam," the girl whispered softly, chuckling.

Alex entered the usual data (length of workout, weight, incline) into the
treadmill and hit the 'Start' button.

The girl smiled, her work done. She stepped out from behind the desk,
walked out the door, turned a corner, and... disappeared. None of the
other employees noticed her departure, much as they had never noticed her
arrival or existence.

Alex was really getting in the songs playing over his player. He looked
up, and caught himself in the mirror. Momentarily shocked, he stumbled.
Or would have, if he could have.
Scared, he began to try to flail his arms, stop his running, reach out and
touch the keyboard -- in short, do any movement other than the cyclic
patter of his feet lightly hitting the rubber of the treadmill's belt, the
swing of his arms forward and back, forward and back, his head held
upright and staring straight ahead. It was no use. Suddenly what he had
observed became a lot less of a priority. His body refused to follow his
mind's commands. His muscles weren't even as tense as his mind; they just
kept doing the repetitive actions, back and forth, relaxed yet exerting
themselves.
What had made Alex want to stumble was... well, Alex thought to himself,
he looked like he was wearing a blonde wig, a woman's wig. But it
definitely wasn't a wig, because he actually*felt* his hair moving as the
blonde strands did! He dismissed that thought as insane. Some part of
his mind cracked at him in reply, This isn't insane already? You've got
hair down to your shoulders already!
He watched in horror as the fabric of the sleeves of his T-shirt crawled
up to become two straps, and the neckline (both front and back) slid a
little downwards. Blinking, he realized it had become a men's sleeveless
T-shirt.
His workout slacks began a similar journey. The light fabric gently
rustled as it crept up his legs, becoming a pair of comfortable dark blue
shorts.
Alex's eyes flickered downward to the now visible legs that were
continuing to propel him forward. They appeared awfully pinkish. Alex
looked more closely at them, and realized they looked so pale simply
because the sparse light brown hair that usually darkened their hue was
missing. They looked somewhat different, too. The thighs were slimmer
and more tight, the calves tighter. Bare of hair, tighter, and... if he
could have, he would have shook his head. Had he not had an undercurrent
of panic running through his head, perhaps he could have said they looked
more compact, more tight.
When his attention returned upwards after the brief distraction, he was so
startled that he was almost able to gasp. The T-shirt had continued to
change. The T-shirt no longer billowed around his torso, but was skin
tight. The bottom was no longer a simple hem, but an elastic band, and
the T-shirt was shortening in length, moving up from his waist. The
neckline moved as if it wanted to meet its friend in the middle...
stopping, only...
Oh, no, Alex thought, as the first inkling of what was truly happening
sunk in. For it now became quite apparent that he was wearing a woman's
workout top, one of those things that encased many a female torso that
male gym mates ogled over. The skin that had been revealed looked very
different from the torso that Alex was used to. The torso seemed to taper
inwards, somewhat, yet a light six-pack was visible. The shoulders were
narrower, the skin of the arms and chest and stomach all bereft of the
sparse pattering of black hair here and there Alex had remembered.
The hair had stopped its waterfall at mid-back, and had seemingly formed
into a ponytail of its own volition, a ponytail that was rhythmically
slapping against Alex's mostly bare back.
Now, Alex did stumble for a few beats, as a brief and intense pain hit him
around his waist and hips. He literally heard a crunch as his pelvic bone
shifted inside his body and his hip bones flared out, became more
prominent. The pain passed more quickly than it had a right to, leaving
only the psychic aftershocks that resounded through Alex's mind as he saw
the shorts, now made of body-hugging Spandex, that held themselves tightly
to hips and buttocks that would have made any man drool. He would have
cried as he saw a slight bulge very slowly pull inwards, as it was
accompanied by one of the most peculiar sensations Alex ever had... a
sort of vacuum-pop inwards, accompanied by a simultaneous, almost
imperceptible, then obvious, splitting sensation between his legs. And
then... and then...
He began to feel an almost electric tingling in his chest. His nipples
felt very sensitive, but in a way that threw entirely involuntarily
pleasure-chills up his spine. As if he was growing fat, he saw small
bulges appear in his skin, slowly filling in and pushing against the
fabric of the top he was wearing, growing and continuing to grow, until
the movement of his arms and legs was soon joined by the gentle swaying
and jiggling of a healthy, C-cup pair of breasts back and forth.
With all this happening and focusing his attention inwards, perhaps Alex
could have been excused for not noticing that the world had grown a great
deal taller around him. At the beginning of his workout, Alex would have
had been able to look the man next to him in the eye... but now, he would
have had to crane his head upwards -- more than just a little bit -- to
meet that man's eyes, which were about six feet from the ground, a good
nine inches taller than Alex's 5'3", and petite, frame.
And the paralysis broke. And so did Alex's mind. But as the blackness
lifted, facts quietly reordered themselves inside his head...

Eyes opened, and a lot of people seemed to be around her, mostly men but a
few women, too. A few hands were reached out, and she was gently brought
to her feet.
"Are you okay?" said the guy who had been working out next to her, a
concerned look on his face. Alexi took a look at his face, and for a
change didn't see even the slightest tone of lecherousness in his brown
eyes. They seemed to be nice eyes. Honest. Open.
"Yeah," she said as she brushed a string of long blonde hair out of her
eyes, one that must have escaped her ponytail. "That'll teach me to not
drink enough water before working out," she said to the crowd.
Most of them gave her wry smiles in return, and went back to their
workouts, except the cute guy, who, to her thrill, remained. "You look
pretty tired," he said.
She smiled. "I usually get enough aerobic exercise at my job," she said.
"I'm a dancer down at the Katt Klub. I meet a lot of creeps, but you seem
pretty nice. Want to go grab a juice?"
"I'd love to," he said, smiling.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: If you'd like to write a 'gym' story, you're welcome to,
and no pre-approval from me is necessary prior to posting, although I
reserve the right to make a corrective comment afterwards, but only if
really, really necessary. =) The only guidelines to keep in mind are:
1. The woman who appears at the beginning will always have a new and
widely varied appearance (although she will always be female), and she
never appears in the same gym twice, much akin to Ellie's 'Hall of
Mirrors' stories;
2. The woman will always say the same spell words, and then she will
pretty much walk out of existence, with no one but the transformed person
remembering her;
3. The mechanism for transformation is the person's workout, whatever it
is (weight lifting, treadmill, elliptical trainer, etc.);
4. Please do not explore the spellcaster's past, history, or intentions;
it's fairly random who gets hit; and
5. Try to stay away from tales that are so far-reaching in scope that
they'd prevent other people from playing effectively in this universe.
Other than that, I can't think of any further guidelines. You don't have
to mirror other stuff in this origin story, i.e., the clothing doesn't
have to change, there doesn't have to be a mental change, or there doesn't
have to be a reality-rewrite at the end.
