extra inches. I came up to let you know dinner will be
served within the hour. How does Madame wish to dress?'
'Evening wear. For you, the charcoal grey three-piece with
the navy-blue silk tie and pale blue shirt. For moi, my
simple Little Black Dress.'
'The one that makes you look like a walking heart attack?
It's a good thing I'm your father or Sam would have some
serious competition.'
That earned me a hug and a 'You're the best', so I headed
downstairs to finish preparing our dinner. Since Aiko died
I've become a pretty fair cook and this was a special
occasion. My youngest was getting married and family
tradition calls for the one about to wed to have a private
dinner prepared and served by the parents. It's an
acknowledgment of the child becoming a 'true' adult and
equal. Eddie and Barbara each had theirs. Now was Kris'
turn.
Once the meal was laid out and I was properly attired I
went up to get Kris. The gown was back in the garment bag
and had been replaced by that Little Black Dress. For a
tiny moment I thought Aiko had returned. Everyone we knew
had remarked how much they resembled each other, but it
never hit me until then.
After dinner we retired to the living room and settled into
our favourite chairs. I knew there was something bothering
the bride-to-be but twenty-eight years as a cop had taught
me to wait for people to be ready to talk. There are
exceptions, usually a life-or-death situation, and this
wasn't it. So I waited.
'Dad, are you really okay with this wedding? I mean, it's
not like Eddie's or Barbara's.'
'How so?'
'Well, for starters...'
'Kris, do you love Sam?'
'Yes!'
'Do you want to be Mrs. Flood?'

'Then why would I not be okay? I love you. Every parent
hopes their children will be happy. It doesn't always
happen, but we hope. Sam loves you so much... It's right
for both of you. That's ALL that matters to me.
Now, we have a big day coming up and brides need lots of
rest so they can be radiant and give the groom a good
workout on the wedding night.'

The house was abuzz with last-minute activity. Guests were
milling about on the lawn and my elder children and their
spouses were pitching in to help Dear Ol' Dad get through
with most of my sanity intact. Sam was in the first floor
guest room getting suited up and Kris was upstairs with the
bridesmaids. Eddie's band was warming up. The music for the
ceremony was on tape but Eddie would play the processional
and the band would be entertaining at the reception.
Knowing how much 'Tupelo Flash' got for a real gig. I was
glad we were related.
Presently a signal came that all was ready. Guests were
seated and Judge Garvey took his place at the head of the
aisle. Sam moved to a spot in front of the Judge and all
eyes turned to the back porch. Kris was properly radiant in
white brocade and lace. Arms linked, we waited for the
music.
When Eddie played the first chord, I almost lost it.
'Sleepwalk' had been Aiko's favourite tune and she had used
it as her processional. I looked at Kris and mouthed a
silent 'Bless you'.
'Dearly beloved...'
Judge Garvey could do this part in his sleep. He almost
flubbed it when he got to 'do you take?' but recovered very
nicely.
'Do you Samu... uh... Samantha Deborah Flood take Kristofer
Wayne Powell as your wedded wife?'
