LYDIA'S IMAGES...
It was the Baraandi's last day, and it was just after the
captain had announced that the members of the ship would
have to enter the life chambers. April was seeing this
scene from Daggerlos's position. Technically, the chief of
internal security wasn't "bridge crew", but his position
was stationed on the bridge, so he had seen everything that
April had seen.
After the captain's announcement, he left the bridge,
ostensibly to go through the ship and help maintain
security, but that job actually took only a few well-placed
orders delivered over his communicator. After that, he
snuck into the personal quarters of his lover, the chief
engineer. After a short wait, Lana entered the room and
immediately went to his side.
Crying, Lana said, "It's not fair! It's not fair! We were
supposed to have a life. We were supposed to start a
family."
Daggerlos said, "I know, but sometimes life isn't fair. I
know it's a cliche, but it's true. The captain is only
doing what he has to."
"I know, but it's still not fair."
Daggerlos licked the top of Lana's forehead in a sign of
affection. "Would you like me to service you?"
"No, I want to penetrate you."
"Really? Oh, God, yes!" Daggerlos practically threw himself
on the bed and spread his legs. As Lana got up on the bed
and crawled between his legs, April felt the images
forcibly ended.
BACK ON THE STREET...
April shook her head, a little stunned at the suddenness
and savagery with which Lydia had ended the dream. Lydia
demanded, "Now do you see?!"
"Honestly? Not really."
"You don't!?! Look, maybe you can handle being bonded with
a guy, but I'm not even a big fan of being around them,
much less having one be a part of me, and if that wasn't
bad enough, I get to be bonded with one who practically
begs to get fucked!!"
"Is that-" April couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Angrily, Lydia asked, "What's so funny?!"
After April got herself under control she said, "You. You
really are fighting this, aren't you?"
"You want to let me in on the joke?"
"First off, the Baraandi are hermaphrodites. They have no
male or female. Because we live in a two gender society,
since none of them are our sex, we automatically perceive
all of them as the opposite sex to us. Secondly, since all
of the Baraandi can both penetrate and be penetrated, those
that accept another into them are given a senior placement
in the social side of the physical arrangement. It's kind
of like you inviting someone into your home, although on a
much more intimate level.
"The chief engineer was older, better trained, higher rank,
and in practically all ways your senior. In modern terms,
what happened in that dream would be the equivalent of one
of the school's Deans of whatever walking up to you and
start begging to lick your pussy."
Lydia shook, clearly confused, not sure what to believe
anymore. April said, "Look. You really need to take time to
sort out everything that you are, everything that you've
become. Why don't you come back to my house? Kendall and I
are sleeping together now, so you can use whatever room we
don't."
"I don't want to sort anything out. I don't even want this
guy in me. I just want to be normal again."
With a comforting tone, April said, "Sorry, that ship has
sailed. There's no way to reverse the bonding procedure,
and if you don't let your Baraandi energy adjust to your
life, it'll drive you crazy."
"Even if that's true, which I don't doubt, I still don't
wanna go back to the house with HIM."
"I don't think you have to worry much about that. You can
put up some screens, and telekinetically seal the room. If
you do it right, you won't be able to sense her, she won't
be able to sense you, and none of us will be able to get
into that room without your permission unless we use a
battering ram."
Lydia struggled with it for a while before saying, "Okay, I
guess I can handle this. How long does it take to sort out
a Baraandi life?"
"If you really focus and do nothing else, it should take
about six to eight hours. If you just let it work itself
out on its own, it might take days, maybe even weeks."
"And if I try to fight it, it'll drive me nuts. Wonderful."
As they started to walk back to the house, April wrapped
her arm around Lydia's shoulders. Lydia asked, "Can I ask
you a question?"
"Of course."
"Why you keep referring to him, Lana, as a girl? You don't
need to keep up pretenses with me. I sensed what was in his
panties."
"Because she wants to be a her. The Baraandi might not have
had sexes, but they did deal with multiple gender
societies. They found that, in a functioning society,
gender was more about function than biology. Current human
society is more than a little dysfunctional. But Lana wants
to be a female, so I need to respect her choice."
"I don't think it's that simple."
"For humans, it's not, but we're a little more than simple
humans. After you get a little better handle on your
Baraandi life, you will begin to understand."
"I hope so. Right now, this is all very confusing."
BACK AT THE HOUSE, JUST AFTER LYDIA'S DEPARTURE...
Kendall knocked on Lana's door. "Lana, we need to talk."
"Go away! I don't wanna talk to anybody!"
"Maybe you don't want to, but you need to, so you have a
choice, either let me in and talk to me now, or wait for
your sister to get back and have to deal with both her and
me."
After a pregnant pause, the door opened telekinetically,
and Lana said, "Come on in."
Kendall stepped into the room and saw Lana laying on the
bed face down, her arms crossed with her chin resting on
them. Kendall climbed on the bed beside Lana and took a
position similar to her friend. After a few seconds of them
just laying there, she said, "Y'know, bonding Lydia like
that was kind of stupid."
"It's all April's fault! If she had just kept quiet about
my age, Lydia never would've found out."
"Never would have found out? Do you really believe that?
You could've kept it secret for a while, probably even long
enough to start a physical relationship, but eventually
someone would have mentioned that you were only 15."
"But by then, Lydia would have known and loved me and been
able to look past my age."
"Maybe, but maybe she would also have been very angry with
you for lying about your age, even if it was only a lie of
omission. She probably would have also felt a lot of guilt
over the fact that she was having sex with a minor. At the
very least, it would've gotten in the way, if not actually
break you up."
"But it would have been between me and her! It was none of
April's business!"
"You're wrong. She definitely should have talked this out
with you, but she is your sister, and she has an obligation
to do what she can to keep you healthy, safe, and law-
abiding. We are talking about a felony here."
Lana snorted. "Only if you just look at my human years. If
you factor in my Baraandi age, I'm older than either April
or Lydia." Kendall laughed. "What's so funny?"
"If you think of your Baraandi age, you're a middle-aged,
hermaphroditic half-alien who was hitting on a college girl
not old enough to even drink. Y'know, looking at you, you
really don't fit the dirty old man profile."
Lana thought about it, and then tried unsuccessfully to
suppress a laugh. "I guess it is kind of silly. I just get
tired of everybody treating me like a scatterbrained
idiot."
"You're right. People shouldn't treat you like you're
stupid. But you need to make sure that you are not letting
people push you into being stupid. You need to stop getting
so angry that you wind up taking that impressive intellect
and throwing it away in some overly emotional act in order
to prove that you're in control of your own life. When you
do that, all you do is hurt yourself, and sometimes others.
Lydia seemed very distraught when she ran out of here."
Lana got a sad look on her face. "I didn't want to hurt
her, anything but." Lana looked to Kendall and asked, "What
did I do wrong? Why was it so easy for me and April to
accept this, where Kendall was so freaked?"
"I'm not sure. Did you telepathically connect the two of
you so that you could watch over her and let her know you
were there, let her know she wasn't alone?"
"I tried, but telepathy was never my best thing."
"Then maybe you did something wrong, or maybe she just
wasn't prepared to handle this. The older you get, the
harder it is to adjust to the bonding procedure. She's
almost at the age where you need a doctor to watch over the
bonding procedure."
"Then maybe the next Baraandi we need to bond with someone
is the doctor. Y'know, just in case."
"Sounds like a good idea, but from here on out, we will all
discuss any bonding with any of the crystals. You, me,
April, and, if she chooses to join us, Lydia. No more
stealing. Okay?"
"I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have stolen the crystal, but
Daggerlos meant everything to me."
"I know. You weren't as sneaky as you thought you were."
"I kind of suspected people knew about us, and I didn't
want to get her in trouble."
"I don't think anybody on the ship would have cared, but I
suppose it was better safe than sorry."
"That was the idea. I was going to marry her, y'know.
Before the Larkoss came along, I was planning on resigning
my commission so that I could raise our children."
"Wow, you really did love her. Y'know, it's still possible
for you to have kids with her."
"Only if I haven't screwed this up so badly that she never
wants to talk to me again. It's kind of a drawback to
living a human life. I may feel more female than male, and
thanks to my Baraandi half, I actually look like a female,
but ultimately I can't do that most feminine of things,
carry a baby within me."
"Believe me, I know how you feel. If we had made it to a
new planet with the colony ship without the Larkoss
following, I was fully prepared to marry April, and then
get her inside me and not let her out until I was carrying
a few eggs, but c'est la vie. We're human now, and in terms
of reproduction, we have to accept the male role."
They lay together for a few seconds, not saying anything,
until Lana finally said, "Are you the only one getting a
little weirded out by this? I mean, here we are talking
about having lost the ability to bear our offspring, but we
never really had that ability, not really. I mean,
technically we weren't the Baraandi. It's just that they're
a part of us now."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been bonded with the
captain for over a decade now, and, before this, I was
always able to maintain a kind of detachment, keeping his
life and my human life separate. Now, it's more and more
like one big life with a huge transformation from Baraandi
to human. I'm pretty sure that April is going through
something similar."
"I'm sure she is. I've definitely noticed that ever since
you two went through the ceremony of revelations, she's
been a lot more confident, more self-assured. Of course,
that mean she's a lot more willing to just do what she
thinks she has to without consulting those affected."
"Now we're just rehashing old arguments. We'll sit down and
get this all ironed out."
"Okay, you're right." They lay together for a while longer.
"Kendall, do you think that Lydia would be willing to go
through the ceremony of revelations with me? It may help to
explain why I did what I did."
"Or it may show you just how foolish you were in doing what
you did. The ceremony cuts both ways. But as to your
question, I think this ceremony may be utterly necessary,
if only to determine once and for all if the two of you can
work together."
They heard April and Lydia come in from outside. Kendall
lightly slapped Lana and said, "C'mon, let's see what's
up."
The two of them left the room, but where Kendall went out
into the main area of the house to greet April and Lydia,
Lana hung back by the door to her room so that she could
observe from a distance. Kendall asked, "So what's the
story?"
April said, "Lydia needs some time to work through her
Baraandi life. Since you and I are sleeping together, I
told her that she could use whatever room we weren't."
"Sensible. But is there anything else she wants to talk
about?" Kendall was referring to talking about, or rather
to, Lana, and everybody knew it, but when they looked to
Lydia, she remained tightlipped and silent.
"For the time being, I guess not."
Kendall just nodded and escorted Lydia back to her room.
Lana didn't move from her space by her door, and as Kendall
and Lydia walked by, she began to reach out, only to have
Lydia pull away. It was small movements on both of their
parts, but very telling. When Kendall and Lydia got to
Kendall's bedroom door, Kendall asked, "Do you need any
help in putting up some screens?"
Lydia said, "No, I think I can handle it."
Kendall nodded and walked away. When Lydia went inside the
room, they all felt extremely, in fact overly, powerful
shields put up, shields that were not only psychic, but
also telekinetic in nature. No one could actually tell
whether or not the shields were so powerful because of
inexperience on Lydia's part, or due to Lydia's anger.
As soon as those shields went up, Lana dashed back into her
own room. Kendall looked to April and thought, {Go to her.}
April walked into Lana's room, lightly knocking on the door
as she entered. She saw Lana lying face down on the bed,
her arms wrapped around and face buried in a pillow. April
sat beside her sister and put a hand on Lana's shoulder.
Lana immediately sat up and wrapped her arms around April,
crying in April's blouse. "I've lost her, April. I've lost
Daggerlos."
April hugged Lana and patted her back. "C'mon, I don't
think it's as bad as all that."
"Yes, it is. Lydia hates me. I could feel it."
"I don't think she hates you. I think she's very angry at
you, but I don't think it's as bad as hate. Lydia, I think,
is a very independent person. Suddenly, she's saddled with
all these emotions and memories from somebody else. I think
she's just afraid of forming an attachment that she didn't
decide she wanted."
"But she did want me, until you..."
"Until I started mucking around. I am sorry. I really did
want you two together; I just thought you were moving too
fast."
"Really? Let me see. Open yourself up telepathically and
let me see what you intended."
"Okay. You deserve that."
April opened up her mind telepathically and allowed Lana to
search through it, but what Lana found disturbed them both.
"You were jealous. You knew Lydia and I were interested in
each other. You figured that if you could arrange for Lydia
and me to get together in your way, on your schedule, you'd
be doing me this great favor and in some small way prove
you were better than me."
"But in order to prove my way was better than yours, I had
to sabotage your way of doing it yourself. I am so sorry,
Lana. I wasn't-"
"You weren't doing it consciously. I know." Lana sighed. "I
never asked to be a super genius, April. I would've been
content to live my life reading comics and playing games
with my buddies, but thanks to my intellect, I kept seeing
things, seeing facts that others didn't. I kept coming up
with solutions to problems that others didn't even know
existed. And each time I did that, more people didn't want
to be around me, didn't want to be reminded of my
superiority. Everybody thought I was doing it on purpose,
thought I was 'lording my intelligence' over them. Even
you, and mom, and dad pushed me away." Lana looked into
April's face with tears in her eyes. "But I never wanted to
hurt anybody. I just wanted to be me. Was that really too
much to ask for?"
April clutched her sister to her. "No, it wasn't, and I am
so sorry for pushing you away. From here on out, if you
feel that I'm pushing you away, you go ahead and let me
know, and if I begin to feel resentful, I'll make sure to
talk it out with you. Let's work at being real close
sisters. Okay?" Lana just nodded.
The sat there like that for a little while until they were
interrupted by a beeping sound. April asked, "What's that?"
Lana started getting up, saying, "It's the scanner I built
for getting a reading on the core radiation in the
atmosphere."
"Great. Just when I think I forgot about the Larkoss. So
where is it?"
Lana walked towards a desk in the room. "Right over here.
It's this lamp that isn't on. I built the scanner to look
like just a normal lamp so that in case anybody saw it, I
wouldn't have to answer a bunch of stupid questions."
"That makes sense, but isn't this a little small? Can it do
the job?"
"It's as big as most of the scanners on the ship."
"Are you sure? They always seemed so much bigger to me."
Lana opened up the top of her portable computer. "That's
because you were a lot smaller as a Baraandi."
"I was? It didn't feel any smaller." Lana got a somewhat
introspective look on her face, and April said, "You're
trying to think of a way to let me know something that I
should have already figured out. Go ahead and tell me. We
don't have time for me to figure it out on my own."
"Well, you remember the life chambers from when we were
Baraandi?"
"Yeah."
"Then you remember the chambers came up to the waists of
most of the Baraandi. Well, those life chambers didn't
shrink over time. The six inch chambers that Kendall pushed
into our butts are the exact same size now as they were
then. The average Baraandi was only about ten to eleven
inches tall."
April shook her head. "I missed that entirely, but thinking
of Kendall..." April sent a quick telepathic summons to
Kendall, letting her know what was going on.
Kendall quickly came into the room and asked, "So how long
have we got before the Larkoss attack?"
Lana looked at the results on her computer and, with a
depressing sigh, said, "We've got six more months of
guaranteed Larkoss-free time. After that, depending upon
all the prevailing factors, distance of the Larkoss from
earth, atmospheric changes, etc., we should suffer our
first Larkoss attack within a month or two after that."
April said, "That figures. That means that our first
Larkoss attack will be coming up about the same time as
mid-terms for second semester."
It was a weak attempt at humor and nobody laughed.
THE NEXT DAY...
April and Lana waited in the main room of the house. both
were pensive, but Lana was clearly the more agitated of the
two. They both knew that Lydia had had plenty of time to
work through her memories, but so far, they had heard
nothing from inside Kendall's room where Lydia was working.
Shortly after noon, they felt the shields and screens come
down, and Lydia soon came out of the room. When she walked
into the same room that they were in, they immediately felt
that she was still upset and angry, although not as
intensely as she had been the night before. she briefly
looked to Lana, then asked April, "Where's Kendall? I can't
sense her."
April replied, "She went out to a local auto parts store to
pick up some stuff for the cars. She's actually coming down
the street now. She'll be back in about a minute or two.
Have a seat."
"No, thanks. I'll wait outside."
Lydia went outside, and Lana hung her head in sorrow and
shame. April patted Lana's arm and said, "Don't make any
snap judgments. She hasn't given you an absolute no, yet."
Outside, Lydia saw Kendall driving down the road towards
the house. After Kendall pulled into the driveway and
stepped out of the car, Lydia stepped up and asked, "You
still want my help working on your car?"
"Sure. I'm going to be draining all the fluids and
replacing all the hoses and gaskets that look worn. It's
not hard work, but it is time consuming."
They got the stuff that Kendall had bought out of the car,
and laid it out where they could easily reach it. As they
began to work, Lydia asked, "What about the other car?"
"I checked it out earlier. It's in great shape, so we won't
have to do any work on it."
"So where did it come from?"
"April won it last night in a car race. She acted as a
driver for someone and won a bunch of cars for him, so she
got this one in payment."
"Pretty impressive. She been racing long?"
"Last night was *April's* first time."
"That's right. Quillthana was an amateur racer, wasn't
she?"
"Yup, a real speed junkie. She probably would've become a
pro racer if she hadn't found a greater rush in flying
space ships around the galaxy."
"I suppose with her abilities, no one else had a chance."
"You're right. No one else at that race was able to get
close to her."
They continued to work for a little while until Lydia
stopped and asked, "Don't April's new abilities give her an
unfair advantage? I mean, her psychic abilities allowed her
to do things that the others never could."
Kendall stopped and contemplated it. "I hadn't really
thought about it. These abilities are completely natural to
use, and become more so the longer you use them. It's like
strength to a pro body builder, something you get better at
the more you work at."
"Yeah, but there's a difference. If someone small sees
someone really big and buff, he immediately knows not to
start a fight or anything with him. There's no way to tell
at first glance that April or any of us are anything more
than we seem. Normal people have no idea what they're
getting into if they challenge one of us. With my new
abilities, I could face Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, and
Jean-Claude Van Damme all at the same time and stand a good
chance of winning, but you'd never know it to look at me."
"Perhaps, but what about those whose abilities aren't quite
so overt? People like chess champions or war simulation
strategists. Those people have abilities, either from
genetic quirks or from training, which I, even with all my
Baraandi abilities, will never be able to challenge. Well,
actually, I think I could do a pretty good job on war
strategies, but that's because the captain was trained in
war strategy, but even with that, I'd never stand a chance
against the best on this planet."
"Yeah, but people rarely risk things like cars on chess
games and war games. If people knew what they were facing,
they'd be a lot more hesitant to risk their property. By
not letting them know, you put yourself in the same
category as card sharks and pool hustlers."
"I hadn't thought of it like that. My only real experience
with using these powers comes from my Baraandi life where
everybody had similar abilities. Perhaps they weren't as
well trained or didn't have the same potential, but
everybody had some ability. I guess we're going to have to
refine the ethics of this as we go."
"I guess we are. Of course, there's always the old maxim:
don't gamble what you can't afford to lose."
They continued to work on the car until Kendall said,
"Let's take a break. Want a soda?"
"Sure."
"Have a seat. I'll be out in a little bit."
Lydia took a seat on the lawn while Kendall went inside to
get something to drink. Kendall returned only a short while
later carrying two cans of soda. She handed one to Lydia
and sat down beside her friend. After a little while of
sitting and drinking, Kendall asked, "Made a decision about
Lana, yet?"
Lydia sighed. "Not yet."
"You don't sound too angry."
"I'm not. I'm still a little upset, but after going through
Daggerlos's life, I can understand why Lana felt the need
to do what she did. If our situations had been reversed, I
probably would've done something similar."
"So what is the problem?"
"The problem is, I don't know if the feelings I've got are
real or just some leftover echo of someone who died
millions of years ago. I want to believe that the feelings
I've got are real." Lydia got a smile on her face. "Their
love was so powerful, that I want to believe that I could
feel that way about anybody. To Daggerlos at least, their
love felt like the kind you hear about in storybooks."
"But you're not sure if those feelings are real or
induced."
"Exactly."
"So what do you plan on doing about it?"
"I don't know. I'm not sure how to handle this. What would
you suggest?"
"I'd suggest doing the ceremony of revelations. April and I
went through it, and it really helped us put our
relationship in order."
"The ceremony of revelations? How exactly do you do that? I
remember Costhenofa wanting to go through it with me, but
we never managed to get around to it."
"Don't you know how already? Oh, that's right. The enlisted
ranks have a different set of rituals and ceremonies for
command stuff."
"Yeah. We were grunts. Our rituals were about setting up an
easy command structure. We got commands telepathically, as
well as the general intent behind the commands. That way,
we knew what we were supposed to do without getting any
details that we might risk losing to the enemy. We also
knew that we weren't being exploited or just thrown away
uselessly."
"The ceremony of revelations gives the participants a
complete review of each others' lives. That way, you know
the best person in your command structure to get a job done
based on individual abilities."
"I can see why it wouldn't be necessary for the enlisted
levels. At our level, it was more about simple
implementation of commands. Being an interchangeable cog
was pretty much part of the job description. But how does
this ceremony help me and Lana?"
"When it's done between two individuals, gives them a
chance to look over their lives and see if they can work
together. It's actually the first part of the Baraandi
marriage ceremony."
"So how do we go about doing this ceremony?"
"If you decide you want to go through it, then Lana knows
how to do it. You should probably get it done soon. As soon
as possible, I'd like all of us to go through a group
version of the ceremony."
"What for? Are you going to insist we finish out the
duration of our military contracts?"
"The contracts aren't the issue. The Larkoss are still out
there, waiting. According to Lana and the scanner she
built, we've only got a little more than a year before the
radiation protection we created starts to disappear, and
the Larkoss can attack."
"You're kidding. You would think that they would have left
the planet, if only to search out food sources."
"Well, apparently they were built with the ability to wait
a very long time. April scanned out to the asteroid belt
and detected them alive."
"Damn!"
They sat there for a while until Lydia finally asked,
"Kendall, how do we stop a flock of creatures like the
Larkoss without access to the super technology we used to
have; particularly considering that technology didn't allow
us to stop them in the first place?"
"I have no idea. Right now, let's just worry about what we
can fix, like this car."
The two got back to work on the car through the rest of the
day. When the sun started to set, they heard April call out
from the door, "Hey, you two, we've got some dinner in here
if you're ready to eat." When Lydia's stomach grumbled loud
enough for her to hear, April said, "I'll take that as a
yes to dinner. You better get in here before it gets cold
or eaten or both."
April went inside, and Lydia said, "God! I didn't realize
how hungry I was."
Kendall asked, "Did you remember to get something to eat
after you got finished sorting out Daggerlos' life?"
"Nope. Which means that I haven't had anything substantial
to eat since before the party. Which reminds me, I probably
ought to call the sorority to let them know where I am."
"You can use the phone inside."
Kendall and Lydia went inside to be greeted by the smell of
cooked eggs, vegetables, and ground beef. Lydia asked,
"What is that delicious aroma?"
April said, "It's a special mix of Lana's. It's eggs, meat,
and veggies cooked up in a pie shell."
Lana tentatively offered, "It's nothing special. It's just
kind of a home recipe for quiche."
April got up close to Lydia and whispered, "She cooks when
she's nervous."
Lydia said, "Okay, before we eat, I need to make a call."
"Phone's right over there."
Lydia made her call to the sorority, and then they began to
get ready to eat. As they moved around, Lydia slipped next
to Lana and said, "After dinner, we need to talk." It was
said with enough softness that it didn't leave the
impression of finality, but not enough for Lana to feel it
imparted any promises.
They ate dinner and chatted about various subjects
(although April and Kendall did most of the talking). After
dinner, April and Kendall handled the dishes while Lydia
and Lana went to talk. Kendall and April didn't eavesdrop,
but their special senses allowed them to detect the
movement of the other two through the house.
They sensed the two of them move to right in front of
Lana's room, talk for a little bit, and then go into it.
Lydia and Lana then worked together to create powerful
shields within the room to screen out external
distractions.
After those shields went up, April said, "Well, I guess
that means they're gonna see how things could work out
between them with the ceremony of revelations."
Kendall said, "I think that's a pretty good guess. C'mon,
let's get the dishes done and over with. It'll help to pass
the time."
"Yeah, maybe 20 or 30 minutes. That ceremony takes 12 to 14
hours. Don't tell me that you're not as anxious as I am to
find out how this is going to turn out."
"You know I am, but this is going to take as long as it's
going to take, and our being anxious about it isn't going
to change that. C'mon. If we just sit here and think about
it, we really will go nuts."
Kendall and April did the dishes together, and then went
into April's room (which was quickly becoming THEIR room)
to try to get some sleep. They were just too nervous to
even try to have sex.
TWELVE AND A HALF HOURS LATER, LANA'S ROOM...
Lana slowly opened her eyes and looked into Lydia's face.
"Well," she asks, "what do you think? Do we have a chance
together?"
Lydia reached up and stroked Lana's face. With extreme
tenderness, she said, "At least now I understand why you
did what you did. You were just so lonely, years ahead in
school, ostracized by your peer group. I think I would've
done the same thing."
"But do we have a chance together, a chance at a real
relationship?"
Lydia sighed, got up off the bed, and walked around a
little. "Okay, psychologically and emotionally, we're
perfect for each other. We could be even better together
than Costhenofa and Daggerlos were."
"But the age difference is still bothering you. Is it
really that big a deal? It's only a little more than four
years."
"It's not the raw numbers, and you should know that, and
you should know why, too."
"It's the fact that I'm a minor, and you're not. It comes
from the fact that when you were in high school, a friend
got into a consensual relationship with a teacher, a
relationship she really wasn't mature enough to handle.
When the two of them broke up, she had to be treated for
clinical depression."
"Exactly."
"But you don't have to worry about that with me. I've
already been through one puberty, and you know we're not
gonna break up. With the ceremony done, neither of us has
any more hidden emotional baggage to bring to the
relationship, and by regularly linking and resolving our
problems telepathically, we're destined to last together
for decades."
"First off, you've been through a Baraandian puberty which
is far less physiologically intense as a human one, so you
can't really apply one to the other. Secondly, even if all
the rest of it is true, which I'm not gonna argue, there is
still the matter of the fact that any physical relationship
between us would still be illegal. Both Daggerlos and I
have both led very physical lives. I don't think I could be
content with just hand holdings and hugs."
"We could do something else. We could start a mental
stimulation relationship."
Ideas flashed into both of their heads. In Baraandi
culture, just as in human culture, when Baraandi children
went through puberty, they would be expected to discipline
their sexual urges and not indulge their bodies in reckless
consummation of their lusts. But the Baraandi, with their
telepathic abilities, had a better way of handling it than
humans did. Any two people, if they were feeling
particularly needy, could connect telepathically and then
create realistic telepathic scenarios that could stimulate
them to orgasm. To the Baraandi, it was something like
heavy petting to humans, although on a much more intense
level. It wasn't as fulfilling as a more physical
relationship would be, but it did help them to assuage
their physical desires.
Lydia said, "A mental simulation relationship? Isn't that a
little childish?"
"Isn't that the point? That we're really children, despite
the Baraandi souls we have within us?"
"I suppose you've got a point, but do you think it will
work?"
"Maybe, maybe not, but I really think we have to try."
"Well, we don't HAVE to."
"Yeah, we do. This is a case of the ceremony cutting both
ways. We KNOW that we would be perfect for each other. Not
just have a good idea of, but KNOW that we'd be perfect for
each other."
"So?"
"So if we don't do everything we can to see if the
relationship between us is possible, then every time we are
with somebody else, anybody else, or for that matter just
thinking of being with anybody else, we're going to know
that we're not with each other, and it's going to drive us
nuts."
"I hadn't thought about that."
"Yeah, I get that a lot, but the fact is we have to do
this. We have to at least try."
"You're right, of course."
"I get that a lot, too. So do you want to do this now?"
"I want to do this and more right now, but I can wait for
the rest." Lydia climbed back on the bed and took Lana's
hands in hers.
Before they connected telepathically, Lana said, "A couple
of advantages to this. If anyone asks, we can honestly say
that we haven't done anything more physically intimate than
holding hands and imagine a lot."
Lydia smiled. "Funny, what's the other advantage?"
"Since this is all going to be a mental creation, we can
create whatever images we want. I can be whoever you'd
like. I can be a full woman for you."
"You don't have to do that."
"I don't mind. I know how little you care for real cock."
"Actually, it's just men that I'm not real fond of. Yours
will be the first woman cock I've ever had, so I want to
know what it's like."
"Are you sure?"
Lydia leaned over and gave Lana a kiss on the lips. "I'm
sure. It's like you said, physically, this isn't happening,
so letting the happen mentally will give me a chance to get
used the idea. One day, you and I are going to be getting
together physically, so this will be good practice."
"Any particular clothes you want me to wear?"
"Let me pick the clothes and the environment. You just
bring that hot body you made."
"Okay."
The two of them closed their eyes and reached out
telepathically to each other...
IN A WORLD WHOLLY WITHIN THEIR MINDS...
Lana opened her eyes to find herself within a grand
ballroom. Off to one side was an antique mirror. It was
wholly out of place within the context of the ballroom, but
it was also exactly placed so that Lana could see herself
easily.
Turning to take a look at herself, Lana saw that she was
now wearing a corset that was covered with a red and black,
mottled pattern. The corset lifted her breasts without
covering them. At the bottom of the back of the corset was
a train that stretched out at least ten feet behind her.
The straps at the base the corset attached to black, mesh
stockings. On her feet were a pair of three inch heels with
the same black and red pattern that was on her corset.
Lydia stepped up behind Lana, reached around her, and took
her breasts in hand. Lightly massaging them, Lydia asked,
"So do you like the outfit?"
Lana reached up and behind Lydia's neck and pulled Lydia's
head down where their lips were only inches apart. "It's
absolutely dreamy, but I notice you didn't include any
panties or bra."
Lydia kissed Lana passionately. Then, without breaking the
lip lock or letting Lana slide from her grip, Lydia turned
her lover around and pressed their bodies together. After
their kiss finished, Lydia said, "Now why, in my fantasy
dreamscape, would I want my fantasy girl covering up her
goodies?" and playfully squeezed Lana's behind.
Lana put her arms around Lydia's neck and said, "You sweet
talker, you." Lana then pulled their bodies together and
gave Lydia a very long, very passionate kiss.
Music started playing from nowhere, and the new couple
started moving around to the music. It was more than just
undulating in rhythm with the music, but not quite
formulaic or regulated enough to be a dance.
Neither of the girls cared.
The two of them moved together like that, both reveling in
the romance of the moment. They moved together with the
grace of two swans, and when they kissed, it was like all
the universe was stopping to let them finish.
After a while of just moving around, Lydia moved Lana over
to a bed that was just there. Lana got a good look at Lydia
as the older girl lay her back on the bed. Lydia was
wearing an outfit almost exactly the same as Lana, but
where Lana's was red and black, Lydia's was blue and black.
Lydia asked, "Are you ready?"
Lana said, "Oh, yes! I've been wanting this ever since I
saw it in Kendall's mind."
"Don't build it up too much. You're basing the sensations
you're going to feel on my experiences and what little you
picked up from Kendall. If you make too much of this, you
may wind up getting disappointed by the real thing."
"Would you stop bothering me with technical details? I know
the limitations of this environment as well as you do, but
right now, I don't care. So finish your outfit, and do what
you know I want so much."
Lydia considered Lana for a while, and then said, "Y'know,
you're cute when you're needy." When Lana gave a cry of
frustration, Lydia said, "Relax." With a flourish, Lydia
waved her hand, and a big, strap-on dildo suddenly appeared
upon her, all the straps properly in place around her hips.
"You know that I want this as much as you do."
Lydia got up between Lana's bent legs. She gently slid her
hands underneath Lana's knees and lifted them to the
younger girl's chest. With real tenderness, Lydia asked,
"You ready?"
Lana nodded and said, "Yes, I am. Please do me now."
Lydia kissed the first two fingers on her own hand, pressed
those fingers to Lana's lips, and then took Lana by her
thighs and pushed the dildo into Lana's ass. Both Lana and
the dildo were already lubed up (it was one of those
details that was automatically handled within the confines
of a mental landscape), so the dildo slid in easily. When
the dildo was all the way in and Lydia's hips were pressed
up against Lana's, Lydia reached down around Lana's legs
and took Lana's breasts in hand, using only her upper arms
to hold Lana's legs. Then she started the actual fucking,
pumping her hips against her lover, causing the dildo to
move in and out of Lana's ass. It took only a little while
before Lana tensed up and orgasmed. With how she felt being
reflected into the physical reality of the landscape, the
entire room shook, and she sprayed semen ten feet into the
air.
After Lana finished cumming, Lydia said, "I take it you
liked that?"
Breathing heavily, Lana replied, "That's an
understatement!"
"Good. Because as soon as you're ready, it's your turn to
get me to cum."
Lana felt a surge of energy thinking of sex with Lydia.
"Gladly!"
The dildo disappeared from Lydia's hips, and she lay back
on the bed. Lana got between Lydia's legs and bent down to
taste her lover. Just before she stuck out her tongue,
Lydia said, "I hope you understand..."
"That you can't reciprocate," finished Lana. "I know. I
understand that it will take you time to get used to the
fact that your lover has a penis. I know you better than I
know myself. Since we're going to have to be doing this on
the mental level anyway, I can have a vagina until you get
used to my penis. Even after that, I think I'm going to be
preferring that you take the active role in sex, anyway."
"Thank you, lover."
"You're welcome. Now, do you want to keep talking, or are
you going to let me put my tongue to you?"
Lydia smiled. "You just go ahead and do what you want to
do."
Lana leaned forward, stuck her tongue out, and gently began
to lick at Lydia's slit. Using the experience she had
gained from going through Lydia's life, both as a licker
and as the licked, Lana made oral love to Lydia's cunt. She
used long, slow strokes, starting at the base and moving up
to the top. She gently teased the area around the clit,
finally taking it in her mouth and gently sucking on it.
Just before Lydia got to the point of no return, Lana let
go of her clit, and leaned back just a little.
Lydia bit her bottom lip to keep from crying out. She
reached up and took her own breasts in hand, teasing
herself to keep from cooling down too quickly. Lydia loved
this gentle torture, being brought to the edge of the
orgasm and being allowed to cool down, and Lana knew it.
After Lydia did cool down, Lana went in once more, this
time sliding her hands up and replacing Lydia's hands on
her own breasts. Three more times they did this, bringing
Lydia right to the edge and stopping, before it became too
much, and when Lana brought Lydia to the edge the next
time, Lydia found herself crashing over it into orgasm,
even though both intended to let her cool down again.
After the orgasm, Lana crawled up beside Lydia and the two
snuggled together. Lydia said, "That was incredible."
"Thanks. I had a good teacher, or more accurately,
teachers, every lover you have ever had in your life."
Lydia stroked Lana's face. "I'm glad you paid such rapt
attention."
"For you, I was glad to do it."
Lydia sighed. "I suppose we'd better get back to reality."
"I suppose you're right."
With that, they drifted back from the mental world.
BACK IN LANA'S ROOM...
The two opened their eyes and smiled. The only physical
evidence of what they had just done with the juices that
had been produced from the physical reactions of their
orgasm. Lana's semen had sprayed out so forcefully that not
only were her own panties soaked, but the semen was now
streaked over the underside of Lana's dress, and the top of
Lydia's blouse, skirt, and legs, as well as some of the
blankets between them on the bed. Lydia's panties and the
sheets beneath her were now soaked with the results of her
own cum. However, neither one of them cared about the mess
they had made.
Lana leaned over and, using one finger, scooped up a little
bit of her own semen, saying, "I didn't know that I could
spray this far."
Lydia surprised both of them by taking Lana's hand, raising
it to her mouth, and sucking on Lana's finger. "I think you
probably gave it a little telekinetic assist. I also think
that I'm going to have to borrow someone else's blouse.
Considering that many of the girls of the sorority know my
feelings on cum, I'm not sure I could explain the stains."
Lana was downhearted and said, "You're going back to live
in the sorority House?"
"No, I'm going back get my stuff to move in here. You
surely don't think that I could be that far away from you
for any serious length of time, do you?"
Lana squealed with glee. "Goody!" she exclaimed before
throwing her arms around Lydia and giving her a big hug.
Both of them knew that a more serious reason for having
Lydia move in was the fact that the telepathic mind she now
had would hear the surface thoughts of others as a
constant, mad buzz. She'd probably get used to it in time
(Kendall certainly did), but until then, the temptation to
eavesdrop, as well as the annoyance value, might lead to
some unexplainable complications, so it was better that she
spend her time around other minds disciplined by Baraandi
training.
By unspoken agreement, they got off the bed, clasped hands,
took down their shields, and went out into the front room
where April and Kendall waited for them. As soon as they
entered the room, an impatient April asked, "Well? What's
the scoop?"
Lydia said, "We've decided we're going to be together, but
at least for the time being, anything beyond what can be
done in public, kissing, hugging, hand holding, and so on,
will be done only in a mental simulation."
April and Kendall rushed the two, and they had a group hug;
after which, Kendall said, "Congratulations. Now, not to be
too much of a downer, but we need to discuss Baraandi
business."
Lydia simply said, "The Larkoss."
"Exactly. We've got to discuss possible ideas that we might
be able to come up with to save the planet."
April said, "Do we have any chance at all? All the
resources of the entire Baraandi Federation weren't able to
find a way to defeat the Larkoss before. Now, we only have
the resources of Earth to draw on."
"I know, but we have to try. The Larkoss are coming whether
we want them to or not."
Lydia said, "Well, near as I can tell, we have two
advantages that we didn't have as Baraandi. One, we're
bigger than the Baraandi were. It's a lot easier for us to
build really big weapons and machines to fight them with,
and two, the Larkoss have to be at a much lower level
energy-wise then they were when they chased us into the
solar system. After all, it's been 65 million years, and
without energy, the Larkoss can't reproduce. If we can
manage to pick them off in small numbers as the radiation
field decays, then we might be able to win a war of
attrition."
"That second advantage might be a small advantage. We might
be able to knock off a third to half that way, but as time
goes by, it's going to be easier and easier for the Larkoss
to get through. Eventually, the Larkoss will attack in such
numbers that if we don't have a plan ready, the planet is
doomed. That first advantage, however much I hate to say
it, really doesn't mean much. The Baraandi had factories
the size of our moon that were capable of putting out space
ships and weapons that were capable of fighting the
Larkoss, and it didn't help in the end."
April said, "Well, one advantage to our human-Baraandi
pairing is that psychically, we are far more powerful than
we were as Baraandi alone. If we can build psychic
amplifiers like we used to have, we might actually have a
fighting chance."
Lana said, "That might be doable, but really, to have any
chance against a significant number of Larkoss, we're going
to have to have all our Baraandi sisters. We should also
think about trying to awaken human psychic potential. In
terms of raw strength, a human is only slightly less strong
than a Baraandi, but they're completely undeveloped."
"I guess we have a plan," Kendall said. "If we're going to
do this, then we need to start looking for who, both in
terms of human hosts and Baraandi who will be the first to
get bonded."
Lydia said, "I think the first two obvious Baraandi choices
to get bonded have to be the doctor and the tactical
officer. Unless we get lucky, or unless we decide to start
picking hosts at random, we'll probably have to deal with
at least a few Larkoss before we have a planetary defense
set up. We'll need the tactical officer to be able to
handle whatever weapons we build, and we should get the
doctor, just in case."
"That makes sense. Since you're the one most familiar with
the people around the University, do you know of anybody
who can serve as hosts?"
"I don't really know. Remember, as enlisted personnel, I
wasn't trained as to what to look for in case hosts were
needed. The only ones who got that training were officers."
Lana said, "They had to be command level as well. I didn't
get that training until after I was made chief engineer."
"So what am I looking for in a host?"
Kendall said, "In terms of their personality, you should
look for a human host that's as close to the Baraandi
they're being matched up with as possible. They should be
relatively healthy, athletic interests being a big plus,
and as young as possible."
"How young is young?"
"You really shouldn't choose anyone older than the main
growth cycle of the species, which for a human is
approximately 20 to 21 years of age. If there is someone a
little older than that who is just an absolutely perfect
match for any particular Baraandi from the ship, then you
could go up to 120% of the main growth cycle, but we have
to have the doctor to supervise the proceedings in that
case."
"So the absolute cut off age is 25, but we need somebody 21
or younger for the doctor first. The personality match
would be the hardest thing for me to determine. The only
people I really knew well were the security staff. Anybody
else would be sheer guess."
"Do you have anybody who might fit the doctor on a guess?
Pre-med students or someone similar?"
"There are a couple in the sorority who fit that
description. You'd have to make a final determination as to
how close they match with the doctor on the ship."
"Okay, give me their names and I'll check them out. Now,
that just leaves the more material aspects of our plan.
Lana, as the engineer you would be most familiar with what
we need for the machinery. What materials are we going to
need for psychic amplifiers, both personal and large scale,
a couple of large scale energy cannons, and some flying
platforms to mount the cannons on. We'll need to be able to
get those weapons anywhere on the planet, preferably in as
short a time as possible."
Lana said, "For the devices themselves, we can get most of
what we need at a good building supply store. The only
problems I can see are going to be with the cannons and the
power cells for running these things. Our big guns are
going to need at least one big pipe apiece, at least if we
want them powerful enough to take on the Larkoss."
"How big do we need these pipes to be?"
"Big enough to walk through. I'd say at least eight to ten
feet in diameter, too big to be gotten at a construction
shop."
"What about the power cells? What's the problem with making
those?"
"The problem will be with the delivery of power. The actual
reaction that creates the energy is pretty easy to start up
and keep stable once it gets going, but we'll need special
wires in order to deliver the energy where it needs to go."
"Will the materials for these wires be hard to get?"
"The material itself? No. Basically, it's just a special
molecular composition of glass. It may take looking around
to find the material, but all were looking for is basically
sand. The problem will be when we try to refine it into the
right stuff. We'll need a static free environment in order
to make our stuff molecularly pure. That's going to be
hard, if not impossible to find, at least not without
revealing what we plan on doing with it."
"Are you sure? How clean do we need the room you work in to
be?"
"As clean as bloody, fucking possible."
April warned, "Watch your language."
"Sorry, but it needed to be said to get the point across.
The fact is, when the Baraandi manufactured these wires,
they not only used static free environments, they did it in
a vacuum in order to preserve the integrity of the
material."
Kendall asked, "Would it be possible to make any of the
material without a clean room?"
"I might be able to make some of the energy delivery wires
without a clean room, but those wires would only be usable
once, if we're lucky."
Lydia asked, "Why lucky if we can only use it once?
Wouldn't it be lucky if we could use it multiple times?"
"Nope. If those wires didn't instantly incinerate
themselves after the first usage, then the impurities would
wind up causing an energy feedback loop in the main
reactor. Any use after that would wind up causing an
explosion that would wind up taking out anything within
about five meters, and that's with the smallest reactor.
The explosion caused by a reactor big enough to power the
weapons we're talking about would take out an area the size
of the Houston Astrodome."
After a few seconds, Kendall said, "Okay, then we won't be
taking even the risk of building a reactor that large. Just
in case, build a couple of personal amplifiers with impure
materials. They'll be used only as a last ditch resort, but
even as a one shot device, it'll be good to have them in
reserve."
April asked, "Should I look around the city to see if I can
find a clean room?"
"Yeah. Work with your sister. She'll be most familiar with
what you need to be looking for."
Lydia asked, "What about informing Earth governments about
what's about to happen. Don't they deserve to know?"
"Yeah, they do, but from a political standpoint, the earth
is too fractured right now. We don't have any proof, any
objective proof, that is, of the threat that's going to be
coming. The first reaction would be to consider us a bunch
of silly girls with a strange story. Then, if we can make
it past that, we'd be shuffled off to some little room to
work in private for the benefit of only one government, and
if we did somehow manage to make an appeal directly to the
U.N., we'd have half a dozen governments working against us
just because one or two decided to work with us."
"So how are we going to handle letting people know what's
going on? I think they're going to figure out that
something's going wrong when giant bugs descend from space
and start eating everything living in sight: plants,
animals, and humans."
"We'll have to wait until after the Larkoss make their
first attack. Then, when we go to the government with our
story, there will be a genetically engineered body to back
up our story."
"What if the Larkoss who attack that first time are too
much for us to handle?"
"If everything goes according to plan, there's no way one
or two Larkoss will be a problem. If they are, there's no
point to doing anything, because we're all doomed anyway."
"Not be too much of a devil's advocate, but what if things
don't go according to plan? What if we can't get the
materials we need to make a suitable defense against the
Larkoss?"
"Then we'll have to revise the plan, but let's not get
ahead of ourselves. Let's see if we can make this plan
work, and if we run into trouble, then we'll discuss other
options. Agreed?"
Everybody nodded. Lana said, "Then April and I should get
to work on finding a clean room that we can use."
April said, "As well as all the materials we'll need to
build all our equipment."
Kendall said, "Sounds good. Lydia, how about you and I go
get your stuff to help you move in?"
Lydia said, "Okay, we might as well get that done and over
with. Y'know, I haven't even gotten a chance to look at my
books for classes this semester."
April said, "I had almost forgotten about classes. It
almost doesn't seem fair. Here we are, saving the planet,
and yet, we still have to go to classes and get good grades
just like anybody else."
Kendall said, "Life is funny that way."
A MONTH LATER...
Lydia said, "I don't like this. I really wish you'd just
tell me what needed to be done, then I could go in, get it
done, and get out with no problems. You're not trained for
this."
Lana said, "Technically, neither are you. You're just
trained in preventing this kind of stuff, and you're just
reverse applying it."
"And what exactly do you have that's any where near
similar?"
"Admittedly, nothing. Just think of it as one more reason
why I need you so much." Lydia grumbled under her breath.
Lana put her hand on Lydia's and said, "Lydia love, we've
been over this. Even in this clean room, I'm going to need
to use my telekinetic abilities in order to preserve the
integrity of the room to make of wires we need. Since I'm
the only one familiar enough with the procedure to do that,
I can't just. I'm going to have to be there."
"Yeah, I know, but that doesn't mean I have to like it."
Lana and Lydia stood on top of the building that overlooked
a private lab in Richmond, Virginia. After a thorough scan
of Washington, D.C., April determined that there had been
only a couple of clean rooms in the city, and neither of
them had a security level low enough to risk sneaking in
long enough to make the power wires they needed. So April
branched out and started investigating nearby cities to
find what was needed. The closest lab with a low enough
security was in Richmond, so Lana, as the expert in what
needed to be done, and Lydia, as the security expert, went
out the first Friday night in order to get into the lab.
Lana said, "I know you don't like it. To tell you the
truth, I don't much like it either. If it were possible, I
would just give you what you needed to do, and let you
handle it."
"Yeah, but I know you. Waiting for me to get done and
wondering how I was doing would've driven you nuts. In
fact, I'm not sure you're not saying you can't hand this
off just because you don't want me to go in alone."
"I might if I thought I could get away with that, but if
you didn't catch me, then undoubtedly April or Kendall
would have. Believe me, if there was any way to keep me out
of this, one or both of them would have taken it. Sorry, my
dear, I guess you're stuck with me."
"Yeah, you're probably just doing this so you can come out
dressed in black."
Lana put one hand behind her head in a fake pose. She, like
Lydia, was dressed in the outfit the stereotypical burglar:
black pants, black turtleneck, black boots, and a black
hat, all topped off with some black makeup on face and
hands to reduce glare. "Well, I do look good in black, and
they say black is slimming. What do you think?"
Lydia rolled her eyes and pulled Lana's hand down. "Knock
it off. Don't do anything to attract attention."
"Please. We're standing on a building almost three hundred
feet in the air. Even if someone were looking right at us,
they'd just write us off as some bird who decided to perch
on the roof for the night."
"I don't want to take a chance. Now do as I say, or I'll
turn you over my knee and spank you."
"Gee, weren't you going to do that anyway?" said Lana,
hinting at the sexual spanking games they were playing in
their simulations.
"Alright, then if you don't do as I say, I won't spank you
tonight."
"Now, there is a threat I can respect."
"Hush, the plant is powering down. Help me scan to see
who's still inside."
The two reached out with their senses and looked over the
entire building. Eventually, Lana said, "I'm picking up two
people inside. Considering the sense of authority they
emit, I'd guess security guards."
"So it's not just me? You can't get a specific lock on them
either, get a look at them inside the building?"
"No. But we knew to expect that. The protections they have
against interference from outside magnetic fields also act
as a pretty good scrambler for our long range sensing.
April, or maybe even Kendall, could look right through it,
but it's giving us fits."
"Well, we've got to get this done, so let's get going."
"Okay, just one second." Lana reached out to the building
where they would be going and extended her senses through
the security system. Almost immediately thereafter, she
said, "I've got control of security. As long as we avoid
direct sight, no one will know we were ever in there."
"So let's move." Lydia swept Lana into her arms, amplified
her physique, and leapt the distance to the front door,
three hundred feet down and four hundred feet across, in
one large leap. The electronic security, even if Lana
hadn't been controlling it, would have been only a short
pause for their telekinetic talents, and in short order,
they were at the room they needed, changing into static
free suits.
Everything they needed to build a couple of psychic
amplifiers was contained in a couple of backpacks they were
wearing. All four of their group had determined that they
would be committing as few felonies as they could manage.
To that end, they would be illegally using this clean room
only long enough for Lana to build the two personal
amplifiers she intended. After that, they would use the
amplifiers to establish a temporary clean room of their
own. It would be more taxing, particularly on Lana, but
they felt it would be more fair towards those not involved
and more private as well.
Once inside the room, Lana quickly got to work. An hour
later, when she was almost finished with the second
amplifier, Lydia asked, "How much longer?"
"Only about 10 minutes."
Almost as if by fate, they heard the door of the room start
to open. Lydia said, "Damn it! I got distracted!" and
telekinetically reached out to hold the door shut.
"That won't hold for long. If she spends too long in that
entryway, the computer automatically moves to alert status,
and I'm at too critical a juncture to be able to divert
myself to either stop it or hide long enough for whoever it
is to come in, do what they have to, and then leave."
"What do I do?"
After a few seconds of thinking, Lana said, "Bring her
inside, but then grab her telekinetically, keep her from
calling out or even moving."
"Got it."
Focused on her work, Lana could only listen as the door
opened and a person stepped in and said, "What the-"
Lydia said, "Don't struggle. You will only hurt yourself.
Don't worry. We'll be finished in about five to ten
minutes."
Lana felt fear and confusion coming from the person, but
ignored it and continued on with her work. It took her
about eight minutes to finish up. When she turned around,
she saw the person, a woman, being held about a foot off
the floor facing the wall. Lydia asked, "Done? Are we ready
to go?"
Studying the woman, Lana, in a rather noncommittal voice,
said, "I guess so."
"Something up?"
"Possibly." Lana used her telepathy to scan the woman. From
what she saw, she made a quick decision, extended her
senses through the lab's communications system, made some
changes, and said, "Okay, we're done here. Let's go."
Lydia and Lana left the clean room, changed out of their
garb, and reversed their path through the building, ending
up on the very building where they had started. Once they
were safely there, Lydia asked, "So what was all that with
that woman?"
"I did a quick scan to see if she would be suitable to host
a Baraandi."
"A security guard? Why?"
"She wasn't a security guard. I checked lab protocols
before we left. The security guards aren't allowed into the
clean room. They're not trained in proper procedure and
activities within one. Rather than go through all the
expense of training them in such things, it's just easier
and cheaper to mandate that they don't enter. That woman
was actually one of the scientists of the lab; working
late, I guess. So I checked her age and training and such
for compatibility."
"So what were your results?"
"She looks like a good candidate. She's only 22 years old,
but she has a graduate level of training. She's actually a
full scientist at the lab, not some kind of assistant or
some such."
"So what did you do?"
"I left an e-mail on her personal account as to where she
should come if she wanted to find out what happened
tonight."
"You didn't tell her where we live at? Did you?"
"Give me some credit, love. I gave the address of that mall
where we regularly shop. It's nice and public, and since
Kendall or April are going to have to do the follow-up
check on her, there's no risk that she'll see somebody she
recognizes. She didn't even get a good look at either of us
except as a general outline inside those suits."
"She'll probably bring some security."
"Undoubtedly, but since they won't know what to look for
either, it won't matter."
The alarms at the lab started to ring. "Speaking of
security, it's really time to get out of here." Lydia swept
Lana into her arms and then ran across the rooftops to
where they had parked the car, the racing Chevy that April
had won that night at the races. Just before they got in
the car, Lydia noticed a slip of paper on the windshield,
picked it up, and said, "Damn, I got a ticket. What for? I
didn't park illegally."
