Ben and Dave were brothers who now co-owned their Dad's old
hunting shack in northern Wisconson. Dad was gone, but the
boys tried to get up there whenever they could. Both were
all grown up, living in different towns and working very
different jobs. Dave was married and had two sons, worked 9
to 5 at a legal firm, and had weekends off. Ben, 2 years
older, was single, worked shift work at a manufacturing
firm, and usually worked weekends. They tried to hunt
together at least twice each fall.
This weekend blessed them with with a glorious autumn sun
piercing through the trees, melting the frost that had
formed on the grass. The light breeze had a welcome
briskness to it. Ben and Dave walked down the trail along
with Dave's ten year old son, Denny, following Ben's dog
Tiger. "Why'd you name that dog Tiger, Uncle Ben?" asked
Denny. "Well, I dunno. You ever heard of a dog named
Tiger?" Ben replied. Denny said "Heck no! I don't think
anybody's heard of a dog named Tiger." Uncle Ben smiled
then, and told Denny "I guess that's why I named him Tiger.
Or maybe..."
Ben didn't finish his sentence, because a bright flash
momentarily blinded the three, then a double sonic boom
shook the earth. Dave pointed southeast, into the morning
sun, where smoke was rising from the ground. They then saw
a small, strange looking craft of some kind, and saw
streaks of light, like Star Wars energy weapons, being
fired by the small ship. They also saw streaks coming up
from the ground- apparently someone was returning fire. The
action was coming towards the two men the youngster. "We'd
better find some cover" said Ben. Dave and Denny ducked
behind some large trees, while Ben hid behind a nearby
stone ridge.
The craft they'd been observing was close now. It was
thirty feet long and twenty feet wide, and maybe fifteen
feet top to bottom. There were side and bottom mounted
turrets that were blasting the hell out of somebody. Those
shooting back were on the ground, and every time they fired
Ben could see what he presumed was a force field light up
around the ship. Then the bottom turret rotated towards
Dave and Denny's location and fired. The concussion made
Bens ears ring, as huge trees were shattered at the stumps.
Dave and Denny scrambled for cover. Ben jacked the birdshot
out of his 870 and loaded it with slugs. He ran towards the
hostile craft and dove underneath, where he suspected there
would be a hole in the force field. Ben dove and rolled,
pointing at what appeared to be a propulsion vectoring
nozzle, and fired his 5 slugs in quick succession. There
was a tremendous explosion, and... nothing.
Ben came awake, and there was a beautiful woman looking at
him. "You have been irreparably damaged. However, there is
a way for you to survive. One of my people was hit by a
neural disruptor. The brain was destroyed, but the body was
immediately put in stasis. We can put you in that body."
Ben looked at her, but couldn't speak. He nodded
affirmation, and the darkness returned.
When Ben awoke again, his brother Dave was standing over
him. So were a number of doctors and nurses. "Ben? Is that
you Ben?" It was Dave. How could Ben's brother not
recognize him? "What happened Dave?" said Ben, "My head
hurts." Dave shook his head and said, "You're in for the
biggest surprise of your life, brother. Try to relax."
"I'm Dr. Raymond Stevens. The Pegasi's brought you here and
performed the surgery, I was allowed to observe. I don't
know how they kept you alive prior to the operation, your
upper torso, head, and left arm were all that was left.
They said you were in "stasis", but they must have put you
in it within seconds of recieving your injuries. The event
that vaporized your lower body cauterized your remaining
torso, but the shock should have killed you instantly.
You're brain was transplanted into an alien body. The
Pegasi's look just like we do, and seem to have the same
physiology. Of course, since we're just like the Pegasi's,
and they have two sexes, well, the odds of you getting
another male body were only 50/50. Considering the odds you
did overcome, you should count yourself lucky- young lady."
Young lady? Ben thought about that for a moment,
remembering the day he'd been enjoying, the conversation
with his nephew about... Tiger? "Hey Doc, where's Dave?"
asked Ben. Dave stepped forward, "Right here, Ben. With a
rack like that, maybe I should call you Betty," chided
Dave. "What happened to Tiger?" asked Ben in a serious
tone. "Tiger is fine, Betty, Denny's been taking real good
care of him" said Dave. "Listen up, asshole, I'll choose my
own damn name. It won't be Betty. Until I make my choice,
you WILL call me Ben. Got it?"" growled Ben. "Got it"
replied Dave, knowing that his brother was a lot more
pissed off than he sounded.
Everyone except the nurse had left the room, Ben was
pondering his situation. "Nurse, what should I call
myself?" asked Ben. The nurse replied, "I have a niece
named JoAnn- I really like that name. Ben contemplated, "I
once knew a girl named JoAnn. She was very nice. JoAnn. I
like it. Please inform everyone that I would like to be
refered to as JoAnn, and thank you for your help...."
"Cindy," said the nurse, my name is Cindy. Thanks, Cindy.
JoAnn's life was in turmoil for the next several months.
Between learning to be a woman and government debreifings,
JoAnn had very little time to enjoy the outdoors she so
much loved. While JoAnn did not want to give up her old
life, the Feds insisted that she do so. So they reached a
sort of compromise. JoAnn would recieve a monthly allowance
large enough to live comfortably for the rest of her life,
her medical needs would be attended to, and the agency
built her a new home in nearby Michigan. Small
compansation, if what the Pegasi's had said about their
enemy's intent was true (something about assimilating and
enslaving primative worlds). She and her family promised
not to tell stories of alien battles or brain transplants.
Only Ben's most trusted friends would be informed of the
situation. Her former employer was informed that Ben would
not be returning, and that was it.
JoAnn enjoyed life as a woman, just as Ben had enjoyed life
as a man. She was still attracted to women, but decided to
avoid sexual situations for a while- perhaps in a year or
two Ben's brain would succumb to the constant barrage of
female hormones, and JoAnn would aquire a women's
perspecive on such things. She made new friends (mostly
female) in her new home town, and got a reputation as
somewhat of a tomboy that needed taming. That taming would
have to wait- it was time to head up to the hunting shack.
Dave and his son Denny walked down the north loop trail,
hoping to jump a grouse. JoAnn, on the south loop, waited
for Tiger to bring retrieve another kill. "Good boy, Tiger"
said JoAnn, hugging her friendly dog, "I wonder how the
boys are doing? Sure hope they don't need me to save there
butts again this year." As she continued down the trail,
her hand reached into her pocket, reassured that she had
five slugs, just in case birdshot wasn't enough.
