In the most fashionable corset shop in London the beautiful Lady Cynthia
Westfold sighed. The corset was dreadfully tight. From his peep hole,
apprentice corset maker Tom stared at the dark haired woman. She was so
beautiful.
"Take it off!" she commanded the maid. "It is dreadfully uncomfortable!
Have it fixed so it doesn't pinch me so!"
The maid hurried to obey. Lady Cynthia Westfold was the most popular and
RICHEST of the debutantes of the London season. Her Dowry was 45000
pounds. A maid or a corset maker would have to work over a thousand
years to have such a sum.
When she was dressed the owner of the shop groveled in mortification
before her.
"It will not happen again, My Lady!" he swore.
"See to it that it doesn't - or I will take my patronage elsewhere!" She
left to be handed up into her coach.
Tom was beaten by the owner. It happened not to be his fault, it was the
owners - the man had tried to cut corners to save a shilling and now Tom
was being blamed. Now he had to work all night to fix it. His eyes hurt
and he stepped outside to clear his head and his eyes.
A drunken peddler rolled his cart by and Tom heard a slight clank as
something hit the ground.
The man kept pushing his cart and ignored the fallen object. Curious Tom
ran forward. It might just be worth something. After finding it he took
it into the shop. Tom was disappointed. It was cheap looking - only
brass with a crude looking angel or something on it. God damn it!
He cleaned it off and slipped it on. It might fetch a shilling. Sighing
he picked up the corset and when he touched it he felt a strange tingle.
He ignored it until he saw his fingers start changing - they became slim
and elegant - a woman's - no a LADY'S hands. He wasn't as tall. He ran
to the mirror. His unshaven face was changing - no whiskers and the face
were changing still more - he looked like - impossible but he was
looking like Lady Cynthia - the rich and beautiful Lady Cynthia. Tom
grabbed at his chest - he felt soft flesh - a woman's breasts. His feet
were flopping out of his shoes. Soon he was a duplicate of Lady Cynthia.
He spoke and his voice was very upper classes and snotty! Tom went from
fear to excitement. Idly he played with his new, exciting body. A plan
formed in his mind. He put on some clothes being made for Lady Cynthia
they fit perfectly. He also took a dress from a shop assistant who had
died of the flux last month. He looked out and watched for a drunk. One
soon collapsed outside the shop - they usually did. He slipped out and
put the medallion over the man'' head and dropped the dress on him. Soon
the man was a duplicate of the dead Nelly. He snatched the medallion
from the transformed man and ran back into the shop. He heard a scream.
The man had discovered his change. Tom grinned with new lips.
"I wonder if the man will end up in the stew's company." he said with
his aristocratic voice.
The owner of the shop came in the next morning and yelled for Tom and
was furious when he couldn't find him. Lady Cynthia arrived and was
shown into the best dressing room. When no one was looking Tom dashed in
and when Lady Cynthia saw her double she fainted. Better and better! He
took off her undergarments and put the medallion around her neck and
dropped his shirt on it. As she started changing Tom hurriedly dressed
his new body in her clothes. He glanced in the mirror and smiled.
"Hello Lady Cynthia, good bye Tom." he smiled. Then he looked at Cynthia
rapidly changing into him.
"Hello Tom, Goodbye Lady Cynthia!" When the change was complete. He took
the medallion carefully from around her neck and put it in his new
purse. As the figure on the floor start stirring Tom screamed.
Lady Cynthia's maid and the shop owner came rushing in.
Tom pointed at the new Tom dazedly getting up form the floor. "His man
exposed himself to me! I have never been so shocked in my life!"
A bewildered Lady Cynthia looked at herself (HERSELF!) dramatically
pointing an accusing finger. She screamed when she looked down at her
body. She was not herself. She was a young man! She tried to explain but
a club knocked her out.
The new Lady Cynthia wearing clothes that cost more than Tom could earn
in several lifetimes ordered her coach stopped on the bridge she hurled
the Medallion into the Thames River. It landed on a ship bound for
America. The new Lady Cynthia did not want to take any chances on losing
her new body and life.
When the former Cynthia came to she was in prison. She the richest woman
in England and in a filthy inhuman Prison. Cynthia soon found that there
was a justice for the rich and a 'Justice' for the poor. She was going
to get ten years. She had kept her mouth shut, being intelligent enough
to realize that no one would believe her story and think her mad - and a
mad house was worse than the jail. Before she was to be shipped to
Newgate Cynthia was put in chains and led to the governor's room. He was
bowing and scraping before a beautiful young woman. The woman turned it
was her former self.
The regal woman smile ironically at her.
"Like your new life, 'Tom'?' she asked.
"Hardly! Why did you do it - I never harmed you."
The beautiful woman shrugged. "I was poor and you were rich and
beautiful with the world groveling at your feet. I would rather be
groveled to than do the groveling. I do not wish you any real harm. If
we can come to an agreement I will have you set free and put on a boat
for the colonies."
"What agreement?" the new man asked, knowing he would agree.
"First you swear by your immortal soul not to tell anyone of our
exchange, then take ship to America and make a new life there. You will
never seek me out or see me again. If you agree I will purchase your
passage and give you a hundred pounds to start life with. Well Tom?"
It was better than ten years. "I swear!" He did it on the bible.
Soon the new Tom was on a ship for America and was writing. He had just
put down a paper saying the Lady Cynthia Westfold engagement to the Duke
of Buckingham was announced. He had laughed bitterly. So 'she' has even
taken the man my mother wanted me to marry. It is a fairy tale out of
the Arabian nights!
He met a Dr. Benjamin Franklin on board - the man was a major figure in
the new world and took Tom under his wing. When they arrived he got him
a job writing.
The editor looked up excitedly. "Tom this is one of the greatest papers
I have ever read. It will sweep the country and put heart into our men.
I will personally make sure that General Washington reads it. You sure
have an understanding of injustice and a burning passion for freedom!"
General Washington stood before his freezing, starving troops.
"Some soldiers murmur that no one understands and why are we fighting. I
have here a paper written by one Thomas Paine:
"These are the Times that try Men's souls!"
