Last night Dr. Raheal Abrams agreed to help me with my sexual identity
problem. She didn't agree to help until I changed from Dean to Jennifer
in her walk-in closet.
After talking it over with my temporary guardian, Dr. Withers, it was
agree that I would spend night at Dr. Abrams.
At the breakfast table the next morning, I couldn't help noticing that
Dr. Abrams couldn't help staring at me. So, I asked her why.
"I still can't believe what happen last night," she told me. "I was up
till 4am, looking on the internet and my medical books to see if I could
any other cases like yours. I didn't find any."
"If you think you have a problem with," I then asked, "What about me?"
We went on like this for the next fifteen minutes while we ate.
As we sat in Dr. Abrams living room, she asked me. "Has anyone done a
DNA comparison on Dean and Jennifer? I just wonder what that reveal."
"No one has," I replied, then I asked. "Can you do it? And how soon can
we get the results back?"
"Yes I can. I even know someone who will do the test for me," she
replied. As she then stood up and left the room. Returning a couple of
minutes later with a Q-tip and a plastic bag. Also she brought a Q-tip
already inside a bag. I then remembered her using a Q-tip inside my
mouth the day before.
"I took this sample yesterday," she told me. "I wasn't going to do
anything with it until I checked with you first."
We finally got down to the brass tacks of my problem.
"I feel like I am two different people," I started. "Let me explain what
I mean. Since I was the age of eight, I have had one dream; to come to
New York City and see a professional game. I didn't care if it was
football, baseball, or basketball. I just wanted to see the
professionals play.
"I was Jennifer when I was informed that we were coming to New York City
to see you. You know what was the first word out of my mouth was? It
wasn't football, baseball or even basketball. It was shopping. Like any
normal teenage girl would say."
She then asked, "I have tickets to the Blazers/Knicks game tonight, do
you want to go?"
"That is what I am trying to tell you. Dean would jump through hoops to
go to the game. Me, I detest any kind of sports."
"So you are two different people?" she asked.
"That is want I have been telling you," I replied.
"If that is your problem, what can I do to help?" she asked.
"I have five years of this before the day I decide who I am going to be
for the rest of my life. What I want, or I should say need, from you is,
help me from going off the deep end before that day,"
"Don't you have people helping you already?" she wanted to know.
"Yes I do. My parents; the PM and Parliament; Dr. Withers; my best
friend Sam and his mother and father; and Teri, a girl I have known for
more than ten years. Even Mr. Cervantes my high school principal knows."
"A lot of kids would keep this sort of thing secret from their friend,"
She said.
"My first transformation took place in front of Sam and his parents. As
for Teri, I decided to tell her after my first day at school as
Jennifer. Sam could help keep an eye on me when I am Dean. I needed
someone to watch out for anything that might be considered unladylike
when I am Jennifer." Pausing a minute to let what I said sink in, I
continued. "I have all the help I need but there is one kind of help I
don't have. That is the professional kind. Sooner or later I will need
someone like you. I don't want to go around like a chicken with its head
cut off and pick someone won't fit my needs."
"You want to me to be ready, just in case." Dr. Abrams then asked. "Is
there something I can help with now?"
"Yes, help me understand something that as a boy I never figured on ever
on doing," I reply. "It is something that Teri brought up and I know my
mom will have difficult time talking about,"
From the tone of her voice, "What is that?" I knew she knew what I
meant, but she wanted me to tell her.
"The Curse," I told her, "my first period."
"Are you sure that you will be have a period?" asked Dr. Abrams.
"With me nothing is for certain," I replied. "Teri pointed just this
last week that I am going to have a period. If I don't someone will
start to wonder. Why doesn't a sixteen year-old girl built like me have
a period? I have seen quite a few sanitary napkins and tampons in gym
class."
"Why didn't you ask Teri?" Dr. Abrams asked.
"I have known Teri since the first grade. She sees me as Dean," I told
her. "I have already put too much stuff on Teri now. I don't want her to
feel like she has to tell Dean about something that she entirely
uncomfortable talking to any man with."
"So what is it that you want to know?" asked Dr. Abrams.
"I already know about the birds and the bees and the difference between
a man and a woman. What I need to know? What can I expect when or if it
happens?"
"There is no single or simple explanation. There is no set pattern on
how a period affects a girl. Some have bloating; some will be mad at the
world. Others will have PMS that won't quit and others will have no
problems at all."
Dr. Abrams then went into more details. But, the main point she brought
out was. "Until it happens you'll not know what you will be facing. My
suggestion will use a tampon when ever you can until you find out what
Mother Nature has planned for you. I would make sure that you'll remove
it before midnight."
As we talked, I grew more confident that Doctor Abrams would become a
very important person in my life for the next five years.
As I left Dr. Abrams. I said, "I'll definitely be in touch."
We left for home the following morning.
On the fourteenth day of my being a girl, I found out what Mother
Nature's decision would be.
I awoke with a bloody sheet.
