I showed her how to pack everything in so the weight was distributed and would increase her stability as we hiked uneven terrain.
We each carried our own sleeping bag, air mattress, water, trail snacks and three layers of clothing & rain gear. I carried the tent, food, water purifier, stove, first aid & fuel. Over the years I have collected the lightest weight gear that still provides protection from the elements and a modicum of comfort for long treks in the backwoods.Finally after about 30 minutes of double checking our supplies we locked the car and stepped into the wilderness.
Ash looked like an advertisement for an outdoor expedition catalog. Once the tent was set up I tossed our sleeping pads and bags inside, then gathered some stones and made a fire ring about 10 feet from the front of the tent. We had a nice small fire going in a few minutes. I told Ash we had to inflate the air mattress and then slide them into the sleeve on the bottom of the sleeping bags while I cooked up dinner. Ash asked me “Which one is yours? They both look alike.” I told her they were matching bags but didn’t tell her that could be used separately or zipped together.
While cooking I broke out a flask of 18 year old scotch. I mixed it with a tiny splash of water and asked Ash if she wanted a taste.
