Hello everyone. Thirty years ago my name was Norman. Now it is Norma
Jean Baker. No not that Norma Jean. My actting skills couldnot fill an
egg timer if I was in the Mojave Desert.
I was working late one night at the factory and it was shift change. It
was the weekend and I didn't feel like cooking. I stopped at a local
burger joint called Eat. Dot was working and she said, "Norm you look
beat. Do you want the 109?" (The 109 is a large hamburger, fries, beans,
and cole slaw. Cost $1.09. With pie, five cents extra.)
I said, "Thanks Dot that sounds great. I will have some coffee and
today's paper too please. These twelve hour shifts are killers."
Dot asked, "Do you want pie as well?"
I said, "No, I am trying to keep my girlish figure." We both laughed.
Last Halloween I borrowed one of Dot's work unifroms and waited on
tables. No one knew.
Dot asked, "What do you think of all the missing people? Some of them
are young women."
I thought about it for awhile then said, "Well some might be drifters.
Others runaways. Some might be people wanting to dodge their creditors.
But that covers most of them. The rest, other parties might be
involved."
Well the food and coffee hit the spot. Dot gave me a refill on the
coffee and we chatted since the work was slow. Then the crowd started to
pick up and I said, "Catch you later Dot. You are about to get busy."
Dot, "O.K. Norm. Hey if you want to work?" (She was referring to
Halloween.)
I chuckled and said, "Once was enough Dot."
I climbed into my truck. It was an eight year old Chevy half ton. I
started down the road to my place. It was an old dairy farm and I used
it for hunting and fishing. I looked in my mirrors after making the turn
to my house. I saw some flashing lights. I thought well looks like the
state cops are after a speeder or two. The lights got closer. I knew
something was wrong. The lights didn't look like the police, but an
aircraft. The lights went out as they passed over my truck. Just as I
was wishing about getting the tail number of that plane, my truck died.
I got out to look at my truck. Then I went to sleep. I woke in in a
strange looking room. It looked like something out of Star Trek.
I said, "All right Joe, the joke is over. You can come out now. Tell
your buddies to join us as well."
Two medium sized beings stepped forth. They looked like a human who
never put any time in the sun. I would have called them Albino except
for their eyes. Their eyes were a dark brown-black in color. The first
one said, "I am Kom Plock. My friend is called Num Chuk. Our last names
you would have a hard time trying to say."
I said, "Joe it is late for April Fool's day and Halloween is a long way
off. Knock off this Star Trek type prank."
Kom Plock said, "This is no joke my friend. We are for real. We come
from an more advanced race of people. We have many advantages over your
planet. You do have a more durable body, we have strength, speed, sight,
hearing, and mental skills over you."
Num Chuk said, "We wish you to join us. We think both your strengths and
ours will make a great race of people. You have some addtional assets as
well. We could conquer you, but the fight be would costly to both sides.
We prefer a peacable solution."
I said, "What's that Mr. Spock?"
Kom Plock said, "Ah humor. Excellent. We want what some of your people
are saying. Make love and not war."
I said, "Great. I am dealing with Star Hippies. Got any them Martian
Cigarettes?"
Num Chuk said, "We dont use intoxicants."
I said, "And you dont date much either dude."
Kom Pock said, "We will drop the humor fest. We will change your looks
to make it easy for us to fullfill our job. Now into the tube."
I was placed into a tube. A skull cap was put on my head. I heard Kom
Plock speaking in my mind. He said, "We can resquence your DNA to make
you a female. A very fertile female. We will also train your mind to our
needs. You have all the skills you need to be a farm wife. You will also
have another job. That burger joint you stopped at earlier will need
another waitress. You will also meet your husband there. Your old life
will disappear almost fully. Your old self will be forgotten."
Num Chuk said, "Your old name willnot be proper. Your name is now Norma
Jean. It fits your new life perfectly."
I blacked out then.
I awoke the next day in my bed. My truck was where I would park it. My
keys was on my bed stand. Everything looked normal. I knew I had to some
work to do in the barn. I went to my dresser and pulled out a bra and
panties. I put them on. A pair of jeans, work shirt, and work boots. I
ate a breakfast of fruit and corn flakes. Then I went to the barn. I
cleaned the hayloft out. It was early but I called it lunch time and I
went back to the house. I fixed my self a salad. I was about put some
dressing on it when the phone rang. It was Dot. She said, "Norma, Janet
called in sick today. Can you come in?"
I said, "Yes I can Dot. Just give me an hour to freshen up and I can
help you."
Dot said, "Thanks Norma. Jerry is ready to blow a gasket."
I said, "He always is. See you in about an hour."
Well I ate my lunch and grabbed a quick shower. Brushed my hair, and put
on a fresh set of panties and a new bra. Then the Eat's waitress
uniform. Over the left breast was my name that was embroidered in
cursive writing. It was Norma. Jerry did like a conservative hem line on
the skirts. Dot was trying to get Jerry to let the gals to wear slacks
in the winter and shorts in the summer. Jerry did allow us to wear flat
soled shoes. Of course Jerry was thinking safety and not looks.
I got to Eat at the midst of the lunch rush. I hopped right to work. I
saw this one man who only would order a salad or fruit. He was tall and
brown haired with dark brown eyes. He was pale looking but not bad on
the eyes. Some of the regular crowd was busting on him. Well that was
normal. One tried to take a swing at him. He just stepped aside and let
the man fall on his face. Jerry threw the one guy out. Jerry asked, ole
brown eyes" Why did you not deck him? You are big enough."
Brown Eyes said, "It was not needed. I stopped him with out hurting
anyone. That was enough."
I said, "Jerry the fries are burning."
As Jerry left I said, "Hey Big Guy, do you want anything?"
Brown Eyes said, "Just some milk please Norma."
I said, "Manners as well. What is your name?"
Brown Eyes said, "Hu BakUr."
I said, "Hugh Baker? You seem smart, strong, and gentle. Also easy on
the eye."
Hugh said, "Thank you Norma. Can I take you to a movie tonight?"
I said, "Sure Hugh. What do you drive?"
Hugh said, "Oh that blue chevy next to the door."
I saw it was one year old Chevy Impala. I said, "How about we meet here
at six?"
Hugh said, "Six it is."
Hugh got in his car. I later found he reported into the ship. He said,
"BakUr reporting in. Contact made and I am called here Hugh Baker. That
name will suffice.I have been acceptted by the locals. Phase Two now
begins."
Hugh picked me up at six. I was wearing a red gingham dress and low
heeled pumps. My hair was brushed and perfumed. I forgot the movie, but
the walk in the town park was very memorable. We were almost at the
Gazebo when a thug tried to rob us. The thug had a knife in his hand and
pointed it at us. Thug said, "Give me your money and nobody gets hurt!"
Hugh said, "You are half right." Then Hugh threw the thug into the duck
pond. I found out who Hugh really was and fainted.
Mike the town constable was walking by and saw Hugh sitting on the steps
of the gazebo. I was in his lap. Mike said, "Hello there folks."
Hugh said, "Hello there officer. Can I help you?"
Mike said, "We have reports of a kid who likes to be a robber. He is
armed with a Bowie Knife and is scaring alot of the young ladies."
Hugh said, "We had a slight problem with a hooligan earlier, but I made
him think of something else."
Just then the thug came into view. Mike said, "You match the desciption
laddy. Come with me. Norma. If your boyfriend needs a job, he can have
mine. I am over due for retirement and he looks like he can handle
things."
Hugh said, "Thank you officer. Norma you can relax now." I didn't
realize I was clutching onto Hugh.
Hugh said, "Let us call it a night Norma. You need to get home for work
tomorrow and I need to talk with the constable about his offer."
Hugh took me back to the dinner and to my truck. I drove home. I went to
sleep. I also over slept. I rushed to work. I said, "Jerry, Dot. I am
sorry, but I overslept."
Jerry said, in a calm voice." That is alright Norma. From what I heard
about last night, I wouldn't blame you if you took the day off."
Dot said, "Oh look. Here comes Mike and Hugh. Looks like Hugh is wearing
the town's constable uniform."
Mike and Hugh came in. Mike said, "People meet my trainee. Hugh Baker.
When he is done training, I am going fishing."
Jerry said, "Hey Hugh. How come you are not carrying a gun?"
Hugh said, "Since I am in training, I am not allowed to. Also I don't
like them or need them to do my job."
Mike said, "Hugh, the job does require you to be armed. I only used mine
on the range. I hope you have the same luck."
Hugh said, "Thank you Mike."
Well Hugh finished his training and took over for Mike. Mike still
checked up on Hugh, but saw Hugh was doing the job with any trouble. The
town was a quiet town. The only problems were the random fight at the
V.F. W. dance or when the zucchini came in. When the zucchini came in, I
would lock my doors and tarp my truck bed. While I like zucchini, I
don't want to be stuck with a truck load of it. Hugh didn't seem to mind
both his own car and the town patrol car being stuffed with zucchini.
Then I remembered Hugh told me earlier that he was a vegetarian and
would eat eggs and drink milk. I had to remind Jerry to poach or soft
boil eggs for Hugh.
Well despite getting some extra zucchini, the next three months were
like a story book romance. There was one warm fall evening after a hay
ride when we were at the gazebo. We saw another young couple dating. The
boy was about to carve a heart with their initials in it. Hugh looked
mad. I said, "Hugh easy, it is a quaint custom and it is cute."
Hugh said, "Boy. Please donot harm the tree. You can show your love for
the lady by another means. She will love you the same no matter what."
The boy said, "O. K. Hugh. Thank you."
Hugh said, "Take care now Lad. Now go some where else."
I said, "Hugh! That is so unlike you. Can you tell me why?"
Hugh said, "I know you know what I am. We goofed up our world. We want
to stop you from doing the same. The time I have spent with you has been
the happiest time in my life. I was lucky to be picked to go here and be
with you. Here what that kid wanted to do is a petty thing. Where I came
from it is a capital offense."
I said, "Hugh you should wait until spring. That is when we tap the
maple trees to make syrup for pancakes and waffles."
Hugh said, "That is different. That is like a farmer haveresting a crop.
What the kid was doing was like marking something for no reason. It was
needless harm."
I asked, "Hugh are you an environmentalist?"
Hugh said, "No I am not. I just know you can't harm your environment
without harming your self. Do you know what a balance scale is?"
I said, "Sure I do. Our symbol of justice has one. Also that zodiac sign
of Libra has one."
Hugh said, "Very good. And make this quicker, you know how that type of
scale works."
I said, "Yes I do."
Hugh said, "Good. The environment works the same.Take too much of one
thing such as water, then you may not have it later when you need it."
I asked, "Is that how your planet got goofed up?"
Hugh said, "Yes. There were other factors. But you have grasped the
picture."
I asked, "Why do you want to help us?"
Hugh said, "Because one of the factors wants your planet. That is why we
didn't want use force. We must save our weapons for the Buttoonese. The
Butt's would waste your planet in two years. With our aid you can last
long enough to resist them and save your world. Our price is to let our
people live here to help you. My price is is for you to be my wife. I do
love you."
I said, "I do you love to Hugh."
Hugh then gave me an engagement ring and I accepted. I said, "Let us go
to Eat and tell Dot and Jerry."
Hugh said, "O.K. Norma."
Well the wedding was held at the local church. Mike acted as Hugh's Best
Man. Dot was my Maid of Honnor.The Volunteer Fire Deparment let us use
their hall for our reception. Our Honeymoon was very sweet and romantic.
When we got back, Hugh said, "Next spring, we must put your farm back on
a paying basis. We will plant crops and raise dairy cattle and chickens.
It will also save on food costs."
I said, "Hugh that is sudden. Why?"
Hugh said, "I must fit in. Making this farm work will help. My job helps
too. But my old job was a station security guard. I just use similar
formula for here and it works. Our friends will not mind some extra meat
when we must slaughter a cow or chicken when needed. We will raise our
children to be vegetarian. You have already adapted to the life style."
I said, "Our children? Are their others like you here?"
Hugh said, "Yes our children. We will raise children. As far as others,
I must say yes. Some are children. Some are adults. Some are teenagers.
The teenagers are making their mark in your world.The children will soon
will. The adults are like me. Using their old jobs to place themself
along side of you. Some are doctors, teachers, and local leaders. Some
like me are just plain people. We have kept the worst of us on our
ships. Also most of our military. The ones we could let go, are being
placed in your military at leadership levels."
I said, "You know that some of our bad eggs have sometimes protected our
way of life."
Hugh said, "I know. They were given the choice. Die with honor or die.
They chose Honor over Dishonor."
I said, "Hugh it is not like that."
Hugh said, "Sometimes the simplest things matter the most. Honor is very
simple yet means so much. No matter how advanced a race can get, the
simple things mean the most."
I asked, "What are the simple things Hugh?"
Hugh said, "Life with a good family and a job. Then some means to let
that family bond and grow with in it's area. After that the means for a
community to grow together. After that, I can't say. But it flows along
the same lines."
I said, "Wow Hugh. You do have a great grasp of things."
After that we made love. A month later, I found out I was pregnant.
Hugh reported to his ship" Phase three has begun."
After I gave birth to twin girls, Hugh hugged and kissed me. He gave out
candy bars.Hugh didn't smoke. He waited eight weeks and we love again. I
was pregnant again. This time with twin boys. As I was breast feeding my
daughters, I was carrying my sons. After their birth, Hugh waited for
five months and made me pregnant again. This time with quintuplets. Both
boys and girls. After their birth, I said, "Hugh, we need to talk. In a
very short space of time I gave you eight children. I must rest for
awhile. I dont think can carry sixteen children at once and care for the
eight we do have."
Hugh reached down and kissed me with passion. The he said, "You are
right Norma. Eight is enough. The quints were not planned, but a happy
surprise. The next one will be a surprise for the both of us."
I asked, "What do you mean Hugh?"
Hugh said, "Eight was planned. But over a ten year period. Your body has
reactted to fast to our treatmeant. That was not planned. In most cases
the families did go as planned. Your body was hyper reactive. Can you
forgive us?"
I said, "Yes I can. I dont know why, but I can. Let us raise our
children right. If we have more, we will just keep going."
Hugh said, "Thank you Norma. Anything you want?"
I said, "Yes Hugh. Let's raise some zucchini, tomatetos, and corn and
get back at some our friends who stuff our cars with zucchini. It is
just some old time country fun."
Well back to now. All of our children went to college. All but one went
into very professional fields. Our youngest son said, "Dad I have my
degree in crimnal justice. I can get on any police force here. Train me
in your job. You need to help Mom to make her great apple pies and
zucchini bread. Also her fantastic pumpkin pies."
Hugh said, "Mikey. I named you after the man who helped me when I came
here. I am happy you want to follow me in my job. Your gal Gennie is
good woman. Treat her right and you will always have a good life. She
has a good farm. Join our two and you never will want. Just let me and
your Mom live here."
Mikey said, "Deal Dad. Just make sure I can do the job half the way you
do it."
Hugh said, "You are already there son. You are already there. I see you
dont like to pack a weapon."
Mikey said, "Pop you taught me if I do my job right, I will not need
one. I only hope I only use it on the range or in competition."
Hugh said, "You have learned well my son. You start tomorrow. A little
OJT."
Three weeks later, Mikey was the new town constable. His first job was
to lay Hugh to rest. Hugh died in my arms and I miss him. Despite the
fact I knew what he wanted, I also knew what he felt. He was helping
both us and his old friends. Like Hugh always said, in private to me."
Not on my watch. Sleep well tonight my friends. No harm will come you.
Not on my watch." I put that on his head stone. Also like Kom Plock
said, to me. They wanted to make love and not war.
