So where had it come from?
That was the question that was on my mind all night. The single thought
that preoccupied my mind. Not where had it gone, or what would become of it
as one might expect. I just assumed that if I could somehow discover it's
origins, then I would also discover where it had gone.
That made the most sense, didn't it? I mean, Robin, the twins, and
Stephanie, the real Stephanie, had been the ones to discover the device.
Since that discovery, only a few people had been exposed to it. And those
were all people I trusted, so it stood to reason that the person had taken
it had been somebody who'd known of it longer than any of us had.
When morning finally came, I got up feeling entirely unrested. I suppose
that was to be expected, after all I hadn't been able to sleep at all. I was
too worked up over the happenings of the night before.
I wandered my way out the kitchen, where I poured myself a glass of orange
juice. As I sipped on it, Mom wandered in from the living room with Robin
right behind her.
"You look awful this morning," Robin stated.
"Didn't sleep," I replied, "shouldn't you be at your friend's house?"
"I got back about an hour ago."
"Ah."
"So..." Mom said, "how do you feel about...well, you know..."
"Bad. Very, very bad. And I don't think that's going to change until we get
some answers as to what happened."
"Did you have something in mind?" Robin asked.
"Nothing really solid," I replied, "I was thinking maybe we could go out to
wherever it was you and the others found the gun and see if we can't find
some clue there."
"I've got some stuff I need to do at work today," Mom interjected, "but I
don't want to two of you investigating anything on your own. Tom's supposed
to come by a bit later this morning, so why don't you two go down there with
him."
"It's just the park, Mom. I'm sure we'll be fine," Robin complained.
"I suppose you're probably right, but it still wouldn't hurt to have Tom
along, would it?"
"I guess not," Robin said with a sigh.
"Alright then. I've gotta run," Mom said as she looked over at the clock,
"I'll see you girls later."
A few moments later Mom was out the door. The moment she was gone, Robin
had me by the arm and was dragging me off toward my room.
"What are you doing!?" I asked in surprise.
"We're going to get you dressed and then we're going to the park," Robin
replied flatly.
"Wait a minute. I thought we were waiting on Tom..."
"Mom's just being overprotective. The two of us will be fine. After all,
all we're doing is having a look around the park," Robin explained as she
practically drug me into my room and began to dig through my dresser.
A moment later I had various articles of clothing being thrown at me. Not
knowing what else to do, I began to throw them on. A minute later, I was
wearing jeans, a navy blue sweater, and a black and pink jacket. Robin
grabbed a brush and quickly got my hair straightened out from the night
before.
"Alright let's go," Robin said, standing back and looking at me
approvingly.
"Are you sure about this?" I asked.
"You want to wait so your big brother can protect you?" Robin asked smugly.
She knew that would be enough to stimulate my old masculinity and make me
have to prove that I wasn't afraid to go on my own.
"Let's go," I said with a little anger in my voice. That was after all an
awfully low trick to use.
The park in question was maybe ten minutes walk away. It took slightly
longer, because a fresh layer of snow had fallen the night before which made
the ground a bit harder to walk on.
When we arrived, it had just begun to snow again. It was hard to believe
that it was late enough in the year for it to be snowing. I suppose my sense
of time was still off from my extended bouts of unconsciousness.
"So where was the exact place you found the thing?" I asked, breaking the
silence between Robin and myself since we'd left the house.
"Over there," Robin said, pointing to a small patch of trees. The two of us
walked over, with Robin recounting the events of the long ago day that she
and the other had discovered the device.
"Stephanie and the twins had wanted to play at the park, and Mom asked me
to watch them," Robin explained, "so we came down here. The twins decided to
play over in the trees, and I guess that's when they found it. They thought
it was just a toy at first, but after one of them 'shot' the other with it,
well, he became violent. He took the gun and shot the rest of us. After that
we figured out how it worked. Then, well, you know the rest..."
"I suppose we should have waited and brought the twins along. They were the
ones who knew exactly where they found the thing."
"Maybe you're right," Robin shrugged, "I suppose we can dig around for a
bit still."
So that's just what we did. The two of us began to dig in the snow. I was
definitely regretting how small my hands were, as Robin was moving much
faster at making her holes. Still, it didn't matter all that much, as I was
beginning to doubt that we would find anything.
Just as that thought passed through my mind, I heard Robin gasp from behind
me. I spun around, and practically fell over from the shock of what I saw.
The figure that stood maybe 100 yards away looked to be about six feet
tall, maybe a bit more so. He wore a black leather trench coat, gloves and
boots. He had a few days stubble grown about his face and slicked back hair.
With all that, and even the dark sunglasses he wore, his identity was
unmistakable.
It was me....
It was a moment frozen in time. Robin and I could only stand there and
stare at the person we had both thought was gone forever.
Could that really be my body...my REAL body...standing there? Hadn't it
died when the real Stephanie, still maddened by the device, got in some
horrible wreck.
And if it really, truly was my body, was that still Stephanie still inside
of it. And if so, had she too had the effects of the device wear off over
time, as they had over the rest of us left infected?
Most importantly, was he the one behind the theft?
That final question needed only to briefly come to mind to motivate me into
action. Before I knew it, I was racing toward that distant figure as fast as
my lets would carry me.
"Steph! Wait!" Robin screamed after me. I could hear her start running
behind me.
Robins words fell upon deaf ears as I continued to charge toward the person
who had once been me. Nonchalantly, he slowly reached into his coat and
produced from it the device, again reconstructed.
'So that's how it's going to be,' I thought. Little did he realize that
thanks to my earlier overexposure to that thing, it would no longer effect
me.
A moment later the gun was pointed directly at me. The footsteps from Robin
behind me had abated, I could only assume due to the threat of the device
that could still effect her.
Then he pulled the trigger.
I suddenly felt very small, very insignificant. I was filled with a
certainty that I couldn't ever hope to stand up to that massive body that
had once been my own.
I stopped as suddenly as I could, afraid to further approach the person
that a moment earlier I had been pursuing at full speed. I knew these
feelings were foreign, not something that I was meant to feel. The device
had to have somehow caused them, but how...
"That perplexed look," the man said in a very calm tone, "tells me that our
suspicions were correct. I assume that the device in it's previous form had
ceased to effect you."
"Yes," I choked out in a soft, quivering voice, "but, but
how...Stephanie...how did you..."
"First of all, I prefer to go by Stephen now. Much more an appropriate
name, don't you think?" the man, Stephen I suppose, stated, "And second of
all, this is not the device that you knew. That one was rather thoroughly
destroyed. The subconscious manifestation that reverses transformations will
not do so, you see, if you make the transformation begin to reverse itself,
a fact that this upgraded version takes advantage of. In your case, it
should wear off in a little under a day."
"Steph..." Robin said from a short distance behind me.
"I'm sorry Robin," Stephen said, "but this little conversation is meant for
me and 'the new' Stephanie alone. I should ask that you keep yourself out of
it lest you wish to forget how to speak for the duration..."
Robin, a look of fear on her face, simply stood where she was quietly.
"I see you understand. Now, Stephanie, where to begin..." Stephen trailed
off, seeming momentarily lost in thought.
"I thought you were dead," I managed to say.
"Yes, that seems a good as place as any," Stephen said, almost merrily,
"You see after I fled from Grandmother and Tom's house, I found myself back
at this very park, trying to find a way to manage my, predicament. It was
here that I met my...associate. He was the one who created this magnificent
device, and the other, and a couple more for that matter."
"You met the person who made the device?" I asked, my nerves beginning to
become calmed. Stephen had a very benevolent air about him, and spoke with
something of a soothing tone. "Yes, very good guy I must say," Stephen went
on, "he used another version of the device to reverse the barbarism that the
other had inflicted upon me. Imagine his surprise to suddenly have a man of
my stature behaving as a little girl."
Stephen laughed for a moment, seeming to recall the encounter with a
certain fondness.
"I have to say, I never really liked being a little girl. That's partially
why I inflicted you with those feeling just now. That's the way I felt all
the time back then, and I thought a little empathy might help you to see
things from my point of view."
"Why are you doing this?" I asked, "Why are you telling me all this? How
are you still alive?"
"I'm getting to that," Stephen continued, "After explaining to my associate
my predicament, he helped me to forge my current persona. Intellectual,
physically prowess, confidence, it was everything I'd ever wanted."
"And what about me?" I stammered, "You just left me in your old body."
"I'm not going to say I didn't lose any sleep over it," Stephen explained,
seeming a tiny bit remorseful, "at least at first. But after faking your
death, and that's all it was, a fake. A police report sent back here telling
of a horrible wreck and incinerated corpses was all it took. As I was saying
though, both my associate and I had some loose ends to tie up, yourself
included. I researched your old life a bit, and I must say, I think you're
better off."
"What's that supposed to mean!?" I nearly shouted, then immediately falling
silent as the fear again overtook me. I thought I may have overstepped my
bounds by shouting, but Stephen simply smiled before continuing.
"The faults of your old life are nothing I'd attribute to you," Stephen
explained, "but rather your family. Your father was a drunkard, yes? And
your brothers delinquents. Your old home was dilapidated, falling into decay
from lack of any proper maintenance. I'm really quite impressed that you
were as good a person as you were given that environment. So compared to
that, yes, I think you're much better off with the family that actually
loves you. Even as a little girl."
"But that doesn't justify it," I said, again forgetting my fear, "I didn't
ask for this. You can't just change my life because you think it's for the
better!"
"Not only can I," Stephen explained, "but I have been all along. Well,
maybe not all along. Remember Jack? He was a bit...overly violent for a
child his age, don't you think. That was the doing of my associate. You see,
he lacks some of the moral qualms that I have, and tried to do to you as he
had to the previous owner of his body, without my knowing of course..."
"What...what did he do?" I asked, again being filled with a sense of dread.
"I suppose it was somewhat justified in the case of the person who once
held his body. He was a murderer, a vagabond, and I suppose being trapped in
the body of a feeble old woman was a suitable punishment. But he was still a
loose end, and my associate arranged for a mix-up in medication that
resulted in a fatal heart attack..."
I was taken aback by the knowledge of what the device's creator was willing
to do. But still, if what Stephen said was true, the person was a murderer,
but did that make it okay? It was too much to think about.
"When I learned he was trying to off you using Jack, well, I was a bit
miffed. I convinced him to allow me to handle you, and that's how it's been
since then. First, in case you didn't hear, Jack's been given a favorable
sentence, reverted to his old self, and his father's been transferred far
away. That seemed to wrap that up nicely if you ask me."
"So...so everything Jack did to me...was your associate's doing...?" I
asked, flabbergasted. I suppose it made sense in retrospect, but it was
still crazy.
"Yes, and Jessica's father's promotion and ensuing move were mine. I felt
that you had a right to build your new life from a certain measure of
scratch, and Jessica was the main holdover from my old one."
"That, of course, brings us to the here and now," Stephen continued, "You
see, you are the last loose end. A little girl with the mind of a high
school boy. I originally planned to take your intelligence in this
encounter, but you've convinced too many people of your intellect at this
point for that to be viable. I suppose the only thing is a few...masculine
holdovers."
"What's that's supposed to mean..." I asked, suddenly very afraid of what
he meant to do.
"Nothing drastic I assure you," he explained as he adjusted the device,
then pointed it at me and fired.
I think he fired anyway...I didn't feel any different.
"What'd you do?" I asked.
"Nothing major," he assured me, "you'll speak and carry yourself a bit more
like a girl now. I thought you ran a bit like a boy just a moment ago, but
that won't be a problem any more. Also, well, you probably won't notice this
one for a couple years, but I assure you you're quite heterosexual."
"Years...but I thought that thing had a time limit now?" I asked.
"It does, but that time limit has no bounds. In the cases of those
transformations, it's something to the extent of 200 years. Far longer than
you're likely to live."
"So...so that's it?" I asked, "You're just going to go off and leave me
like this?"
"That's the plan," Stephen stated, "My associate and I, we're going to
become vagabonds of sorts. Traveling about and enjoying life, while keeping
a low cover of course. Trust me on this, you'll be better off in the long
run. Being a girl isn't all that bad, just not the life I was meant for.
Tell the family goodbye for me."
And with that, Stephen turned around and walked away. I was still too
scared to chase after him, as was Robin a assumed, so we just watched him
until he was out of view.
After he was gone, Robin walked over to me and helped me to my feet.
Neither of us knew what to say at that point. Hell, what was there to say?
Robin put her arm around me, and with something of a forces smile said,
"let's go home."
We got home shortly before Tom arrived. I went off to my room, telling
Robin I wanted, no, I needed to be alone for a little while. I didn't want
to explain what had happened. It was too hard...too soon.
When I got back to the little room that I now knew was mine forever, I
found my way to may bed and collapsed on it.
I thought for a long time about what Stephen had said. I mean, he did have
a point, didn't he? I couldn't deny that the family I was now a part of was
much better than my old one. I could see Mark becoming a friend.
The thought of Mark made me remember the rest of what he'd done. When I had
first inhabited this body, I had lost all my sex drive such as it were.
Eventually, it would mature to the point where it would return, and at that
time, my attractions would fall upon men instead of women. I wasn't sure how
I felt about that, but that wasn't a problem for right now, but rather years
in the future.
As I already said though, it was all a bit much for the moment. I could
contemplate it all until I went insane, but where would that get me?
I got up and turned on the radio on my dresser. I then again fell upon my
bed and allowed myself to become completely absorbed in the music, and then
slowly to drift off to sleep.
To be Completed...
That's right, I only have one more chapter slated for this story. I hope to
have it completed in a somewhat reasonable amount of time, but then again I
plan that for pretty much every chapter I write, and you guys know how that
works out :p Anyway, stay tuned :)
