"And here we are," Tom said as the car came to a stop.
"Thanks you captain obvious," I jokingly replied.
We sat there for a moment, when Tom suddenly busted out laughing.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"You might be a redneck if you're Dad takes you to school because he's in
the same grade as you..." Tom replied cryptically.
"Where did that come from?"
"I guess it just fits the situation. I'm not quite old enough to be your
Dad, but this is still pretty ridiculous..." Tom trailed off.
"Well, did you expect me to just keep going to elementary school?"
"Pretty much, yea," Tom said as he hopped out of the car.
"Yea, well, you're just jealous because my classes are harder than your
classes!" I insisted.
"Oh yea, that's something to be jealous about! Besides, you're still just a
freshman," Tom said, "Though I am still wondering what the hell you wrote on
those tests for them to let a freaking fourth grader go to high school!"
"The right answers, for the most part. You should try it sometime, then
maybe you wouldn't be in remedial English."
"Nice, very nice. Remember what I said about telling me if anybody screws
with you. Well, forget it now!"
"That's quite alright, I can take care of myself."
"Yea, sure, you keep telling yourself that."
I had to admit that going back to high school was...nerve wracking to say
the least. Everything was, to put it simpler, bigger. When Tom and I entered
the halls, I saw the mass of teenagers over most of whom I'd once towered
and now I found myself significantly tinier.
I got a lot of funny looks at first. Pretty much everybody we passed looked
over at me with a confused look on their face. I suppose I might have
reacted the same way had a nine year old strolled onto campus back when I
fell into their peer group.
"Hey, Tom!"
"Oh, hey Chris," Tom said turning to greet someone who had once been a
mutual friend.
"Um, dude, why in the name of hell is your little sister here?" he asked
Tom, understandably confused.
"Man, that's a long, long story," was all Tom replied for the time being,
"Right now though, I need to make sure she gets to first period alive."
"Gee, you guys wanna keep talking about me like I'm not here?" I asked,
moderately annoyed.
"Yea, yea, sorry, sorry," Tom grumbled.
"Wai....wait a minute....first period....?" Chris trailed off, absolutely
dumbfounded as Tom and I walked off.
"I suppose I should expect a lot of that reaction for a little while, eh?"
I asked musingly.
"Well, what do you expect. Anyway, here we are. Mr. Thomas' calculus class.
First stop of the day for varying degrees of nerds, present company
included," Tom stated with a smirk.
"Yea, yea, yea. I'll be okay from here. You go run off to your PE or
whatever it is you have first period these days."
"Alright. Good luck," Tom said as he left me alone on what was sure to be a
very interesting first day.
As I made my entrance into the classroom, I saw a few students engaging in
conversation in the back as old Mr. Thomas worked on something or other at
his desk.
"What the..." one of the students in the back stated somewhat audibly after
witnessing my entrance. His exclamation seemed to be enough to rouse Mr.
Thomas from his work.
"Ah, Ms. Taylor I presume," Mr. Thomas said as he came to his feet. He was
a short man at 5'6", but still towered well over myself.
"Yes sir," I replied, trying to ensure that this 'first encounter' went
well. I had had Mr. Thomas before, and had noted that students who failed to
do that tended not to fair well.
"I must say," he said as he approached me, "I was awfully...surprised when
I was informed that somebody of your young age would be joining the class. I
must admit though, I had the opportunity to look at some of your work, and
I'm certain you'll do splendidly!"
"Thank you sir," I said with a smile.
"I believe we have an empty seat in the back corner by Ms. Miller. I'm sure
you'll have no trouble with her," Mr. Thomas went on.
I got myself situated at my new seat, all the while under the gaze of some
of the class' other students. I was sure that by this point most of them had
realized what was going on, but that did nothing I'm sure to suspend the
disbelief.
It took some getting used to, the desks that is. Before all this had
happened, they'd always seemed a bit small for me. Now my feed didn't quite
reach the ground on them. My skirt crumpled a bit under me as I sat, and I
had to stand up again to flatten it out.
Yes, I was wearing a skirt. And a blouse. I assure you neither was my idea.
I still would have just assumed worn jeans and a tee-shirt. Mom, on the
other hand, wanted to make sure I made a good impression on my first day,
and had insisted. I didn't really care enough to put up much of an argument.
As students continued to file into class, each casting a peculiar glance in
my direction upon entering and whispering amongst the other students to
figure out what was going on. It made me feel like something of a freak.
Still, I just assured myself that with time the novelty would pass.
I was attempting to ignore the other students staring at me and get some of
the tabs in my binder put in when my turn came to be surprised.
"Stephanie!?" came a familiar voice from the door. I glanced up and saw
Sara standing there.
"Oh, hi Sara," I replied.
"What...what are you doing here?" she asked in surprise.
"Remember when Tom said I was a bit...ahead of the curve in academics.
Well, he wasn't exaggerating," I said with a smile, "I assume you're in this
class too?"
"Um, yea....I guess we sit next to each other," she trailed off.
"Neat," I replied before going back to my binder.
"You know," I said as Sara finally came over and began to get herself
situated in her seat, "Tom was commenting on how this was the first class of
the day for nerds and the likes. I wonder if he had anybody in mind when he
said that..."
"Oh, did he now," Sara replied, relaxing a bit, "well, he and I will have a
little talk about that later."
'And that will get Tom back for that comment,' I thought to myself.
Right then the bell to start class rang.
"Alright class, into your seats," Mr. Thomas proclaimed.
"As most of you have already noticed," he continued, "we have a new
student. She may not be very big, but she seems to have what it takes to be
here. Isn't that right Ms. Taylor."
"Um, yes sir," I said, blushing a bit from embarrassment.
"Alright, enough with introductions and onto today's studies..." Mr. Thomas
said as he commenced with the days lessons.
Most of the rest of my classes went the same way. When lunch rolled around,
I was fully expecting to be something of a social outcast. I wasn't about
put Tom in the position to have his little sister following him around, as
much as I might have liked to.
So, as I said, I went with the outcast plan. I was munching on a sandwich
in a relatively unoccupied corner of the cafeteria when that plan came to
ruin.
Before I knew what had happened, I found myself surrounded by a group of
girls. I recognized a few of them from advanced English and history, while
the others were entirely new.
"Might I be of service?" I asked, confused by why they had deemed to
approach me.
"Oh my God she's cute," one of the girls, a short redhead with thick
glasses commented.
"Yea, she is," replied a tall brunette who appeared to be their ring
leader.
"Hi," the brunette said, to me this time, "I'm Sandy, and this is Trish,
Emily, and Susan," she said indicating the red-head, a blond girl, and
another brunette.
"I'm Stephanie," I said, feeling obliged to offer my name.
The girls all offered up a greeting as they took up the remaining seats at
my table.
"So, Stephanie," Sandy continued, "the four of us saw you sitting alone
over here, and we thought you might like to join us."
"Join you?" I asked, confused by what she was getting at."
"You see, we're all part of the school's drama club, and we thought it'd be
pretty cool to have real kid to play the kid's parts. It'll be loads of
fun, I promise. What do ya' say?"
"I'm not really much of an actress," I stated. I wasn't really any kind of
actress. I had never acted a day in my life.
"It's not that hard, really!" Sandy insisted, "Just give it a shot.
Honestly, I promise it'll be a lot of fun."
I thought about it for a moment, weighing my options. I could go along with
them, and probably make a complete idiot out of myself. On the other hand, I
could go on to live an existence of relative solitude.
Idiot...solitude...idiot...solitude....
"Sure, why not," I finally replied.
"Awesome," Sandy said with a big grin on her face. The other girls all
seemed to agree with her.
After that I followed the bunch off to the drama room, a place I'd never
actually gone in my previous tenure at the school. I was surprised since,
short of the girls' rest room, I wasn't really expecting to venture to many
new places.
When we got there, I saw the room already filled with other students with a
skit of some sort on the make-shift stage coming to a close.
"Alright," Sandy said after the skit of through, "I've found us a new Billy
for the play..."
"Billy? I'm playing a boy?" I asked surprised.
"Sure. That's not a problem, is it?" Sandy asked.
"No," I replied, trying not to laugh, "not at all, I assure you."
A few minutes later I found myself studying a copy of the script for some
school play in progress. I found it hilarious that I'd been cast in the role
of a little boy, though I tried not to let on.
I tried a few lines here and there before lunch was over, and found myself
to not be quite as horrible as I'd have expected. Most of the other students
seemed pleased enough.
All in all it was a fairly warm welcome. Not a bad to group to fall in
with, I figured.
"Good job today," Sandy said as the bell signifying the end of lunch rang,
"You need a little work acting like a boy though..."
That was too much. I couldn't take it any more.
I started laughing hysterically.
"Are you alright?" Sandy asked after my laughter quieted down a bit, "did I
say something funny?"
"I'm fine, it's nothing," I said as I wiped a tear from the corner of my
eyes excused myself for fifth period.
The rest of the day went fairly uneventfully. After school, Tom had
wrestling practice, so I found myself walking home.
It just so happened that the route home took me by the old elementary
school, and to my surprise as I passed it I found Mark there waiting for me.
"What are you still doing here?" I asked, "Didn't you get out half an hour
ago?"
"Yea, I thought I'd walk you home," Mark said with his huge goofy grin on
his face.
"Well, that's very nice of you," I said with a smile, "so how was your day
at school."
"Um good. So, what are you doing when you get home?"
"Homework I guess. They loaded us down in Physics today," I replied.
"Oh," Mark replied, seeming a bit disappointed.
"After that though," I said, watching him perk up a bit, "I'll tell you
what. I'll give you and call and tell you all about the horrors of high
school."
"Cool," he replied happily.
For the rest of the way back to my house we talked about football and video
games and stuff. It was good to get my daily fix of 'guy talk'.
When I got home, Mark excused himself and continued on him way back home.
"But I assure you you're quite heterosexual," were the words Stephen had
used those few short weeks ago. Mark was a nice guy, and a good friend. I
couldn't help but wonder, if things kept up as they were, maybe in a couple
years he and I might be a bit more than friends.
Once I was in the house Robin and the twins were all over me with questions
about my day. I regaled them with tails of my adventures in...um, calculus.
When I mentioned my apparent membership with the drama club, Robin busted up
laughing.
"And what's so funny?" I asked.
"Oh my God you are such a girl," was all Robin said as she stumbled back to
her room.
"Hey! What do you mean by that," I said as I chased after her.
"Look at you," she said, still laughing, "The way you're dressed, drama
clubs. Heck, you're even walking and talking like a girl. And don't think I
didn't see you and your little boyfriend out there!"
"What!? Mark!? No, no, no! You've got it all wrong! We're just friends!" I
insisted.
"Yea sure," Robin snickered.
"I mean it," I stammered, stomping my foot. That just made Robin laugh
more.
"But seriously though," Robin said after she finally was able to contain
her laughter, "I'm happy for you..."
"You're happy for me?" I asked, confused by what she meant.
"This is the happiest I've seen you in a long while," she said as she
walked up and wrapped her arms around me, "How about you stay happy for a
while?"
"I'll try," I said as I returned the embrace.
In the end, I think Stephen was right. This was a good family, and I
couldn't help but think that even if it meant my entire world being turned
upside down I was better off for being a part of it.
After that I did homework pretty much until Mom came home when I was forced
to again tell the tale of my first day back at high school. Her sentiments
were much the same as Robin's, and she told me how happy she was to see me
happy.
After my talk with Mom, I called Mark up and the two of us talked for a
little while. I told him all about high school, and he was absolutely in awe
that I should be doing anything like that. I suppose he helped me put my
whole situation as a little kid in high school in perspective.
After Mark and I finished talking, I found myself taken by a strange urge.
I found myself sneaking into the backyard, and scaling the fence. Shortly
there-after I found myself sitting on the roof and staring up at the stars
that had just begun to become visible.
It was unseasonably warm for a January night, and I found the cool breeze
that blew on my face to be rather pleasant.
I just sat up there and thought about things. Family, School, Mark, you
know, everything. This was really my life. It still seemed almost to be a
dream, and I felt almost as though at any moment I might wake up. What
surprised me was that, for the first time since all this had started, I
didn't want to wake up. I wanted this to be my life, because it was a good
life.
I began to think about my future. It was bright with possibilities, more
than I could have ever imagined. I only wished I knew where my destiny would
take me...
As I sat up and gazed at the stars, I found the serenity of the moment to
be momentary broken by the sounds of another scaling the roof-top.
"How's it going, gorgeous?" Mark said as he poked his head up into view.
The years had been good to Mark. At seventeen, he was the muscular and
handsome star running back for my old high school. More importantly than
that, though, he was my long time boyfriend.
"Pretty good, ugly," I replied as I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Ouch," he said with his old goofy grin on his face, "that really hurts you
know!"
"Yea, sure it does!" I exclaimed unbelievingly.
"So what brings you up here? Aren't you cold?" he asked.
"Not now," I said as I took his arm and wrapped it around me, leaning up
against him.
"Friendly tonight, aren't you," he said jokingly.
"I suppose," I replied, "I've just been thinking about the future. It's
kind of scary you know..."
"I'd imagine," Mark said, "I mean, you graduate college in what, a
semester?"
"Yup, and then it's out to the real world," I stated.
"Gee, what are people going to think when you tell them you're dating a
high school student?" Mark asked jokingly.
"Comments like that are a good way to find yourself short one girlfriend,"
I pointed out.
"Heh, I guess you're right," Mark replied.
As I sat there with Mark's arm around me, I resumed my gaze at the stars.
Some of the possibilities of the years before had slowly come and gone.
Still, most of them were still there, and I realized I wouldn't trade the
last several years with Mark for all the possibilities in the world.
"I love you, you know," I said quietly as I turned my gaze from the stars
and back to Mark.
I looked back at me, still wearing that goofy grin I loved so much.
"I love you too," he said as he leaned in and began to kiss me.
All the pain of my early days was gone now. My life now has become one of
happiness. Even more than that, it was a life of love. A life where I can be
forever content, embraced by my love beneath a beautiful night sky.
The End
Sudden inspiration struck me, and I found myself finishing the story of
Stephanie much faster than anybody probably would have expected. I hope all
of you enjoyed the series. I know it was one heck of a project for me, but
well worth it in my opinion.
