He had been born Dane of Normandy. He was not particularly small but his
features were fine and what would be concidered beautiful by some, but too
slight to be handsome by Norman standards. He like his brothers and sisters
were blessed with golden blonde like the rays of the sun that came down
from the heavens. He was often teased by his brothers as Dane the
Beautiful, Dane the Slight, Dana, and many other jokes at his expence. Even
his sisters and the girls of his town treated him more as one of them
instead of one of the men.
Dane however was quite pragmatic for a young man. He enjoyed his dual life,
one foot in the world of women and one in the world of men. He trained with
weapons as all boys and had the confidence and companionship of the girls
and women... more or less. He figured in the pragmatic way that he needn't
the comradery that came with being included with the boys and men... so his
young like was more or less a happy one. The lives of the children of
minors lords... especially when they were well off were not hard ones...
Dane's family was one of those.
As he reached his teens and Dane was expected to goto war he felt he was
ready, and as he prepared to move out with the duchy army, ready to seek
his own fame and honor, he overheard a conversation amoungst those men that
had long been comrades in a fraternity that he really didn't belong, almost
directly under his window. They spoke of their desire to have the chance to
plunder, rape, and pillage. "If not," one of his brothers chimed in, "we
always have Dana's cute little virgin ass to use as we desire!" This
brought a roar of laughter from the mostly vetern assemblage... the problem
that Dane almost immediately had with it was he could instantly tell it was
only part joke.
Dane dropped his unsheathed sword on his foot, the blade cut deep and he
cried out in pain. It got peoples attention instantly. The cut was bad and
he would not being going out with Duke's army. Some looked at him like they
would a coward and others that suspected what he had overheard looked at
the floor to hide their own guilt from those that might might see through
them. Dane of Normandy would not find his fame and fortune in this war or
any other. Dane of Normandy, whom at long last broke his fathers heart,
began a new career that day and would become Dane the Merchant... an insult
to his warrior blood, but Dane would respect his father will until the day
his father died which would be only 2 years later... with the coming of the
plague.
The fighting with the English and King Edward III had cost the family all
sons except Dane and his younger brother Tage. Dane had brought much profit
to the family and in doing so had raised its importance bringing
prosperious marriages for his sister and both he and Tage employeed well
armed and trained private troops. Dane's was of course guards against
bandits while Tage commanded a fighting force... but Dane maintained his
training and felt he was ready to finally go to war for his family and take
up his rightful mantle at the head of the family. Like his fathers love and
respect, even this was at long last denied him.
Tage laid claim to the family and the family fortune by virtue that he was
a true nobleman and Dane a mere trader. The Duke passed the title to Tage
and Tage fearful that his brother would try to wrestle away the title had
Dane striped of title and family wealth, leaving him what he had managed
squirrel away for himself... Dane the Beautiful, Dane the Slight, Dane the
Merchant, at the age of 15 was alone with only meager resources and no
title to make him more than he was. He in short order had become a
commoner. He knew soon he might find himself in servitude, no more than a
thrall when his money ran out.
He searched his contacts for employment but his brother sent word to
seemingly everyone that that he had contact with and some that he did not.
Dane was becoming desparate and even started looking for employment from
his former rivals. Thayer of Strasbourg, a most bitter rival, sent a
messenger to Dane suggesting that he had something that might solve a
problem both of them. Dane was skeptical, but desparate at the same.
He meet with Thayer in the middle and almost literally in the middle of
nowhere, a small house, more of a hunting lodge, were they first dined, and
when they were done Thayers servents left them to discuss the proposition.
Thayer explained to his at leangth how he had fallen deeply in love with a
daughter of the Duke of Lorraine and how it canme to be that she was
promised to a Lord in Anjou. His tale of woe seemed endless and without
point until Dane could abide no more.
"Thayer, for the Love of God man, what do you want?!?" Dane finally burst.
"Well you see..." Thayer stammer, "You and Desiree, well you sort of..."
Thayer stopped, got up and went to an adjoining room and came back with
whom Dane could only assume was Desiree. "As you can see," he finished
quietly, "You almost look alike."
Dane was only confused briefly, and then the full weight of what he had yet
to purpose hit him. The room seemed to swim as he figured out that Thayer
wanted him to take Desiree's Place.
