Mike Vest reached the part of his route he liked the least, bordering on
hated, but a UPS guy had to do what a UPS guy had to do, so unlimbering
his trusty dolly and loading up six boxes he walked though the front door
of The Infrared Nova Implosion Styling Asylum.
The first thing that got of Mike's nerves about the place was the smell,
not that he liked what other hair salons smelled liked, he didn't, but
the strange mix of herbs, incense, & ozone all fighting it out with an
indescribable organic base just struck him as something that ought not
be.
Then there was the place itself! There was a reception desk, where in a
just world he would leave the packages and go, but in the Nova, as
always, it was unmanned, forcing him, as it did customers, to go into the
salon itself where, if the smells were unearthly they were commonplace to
the anarchy that ruled there.
First of all Mike thought the whole first floor of a building that took
up half a city block was too damn big for a salon, and for sure too big
for a salon made up of only seven stylists, and what stylists!
With the reception desk empty he once again had to greet them one by one
heading down the room that was divided into 8 spaces, across from the
waiting area, a lava lamp & Day-Glo train wreck that only a Dali or Tim
Leary could have loved, was the cell of Lady Cherry Crimson, made up of
chairs, lounges, and machines, both familiar and unknown in their purpose
all in different tones of red from pale pink to deep burgundy.
Lady Cherry, a blonde half a shade brighter than a summer sun, was
working on a customer, a woman with measurements that Mike guessed to be
around 44 - 23 - 44 was incased from head to foot in a black cat suit
that looked as if it had been pored on her, standing behind her was Lady
Cherry who smiled motioning him to come closer, as always somewhat taken
aback by the feel of the soft latex like scarlet floor of her cell he
brought the box he had for her over, as she signed he got a better look
at the woman in the chair whom Lady C, at least so it seemed, was giving
a pageboy that was made out of the same shiny stuff as her catsuit,
getting closer also revealed a noticeable bulge that didn't fit with the
figure of the customer.
"Love to talk," said Lady Cherry. "But we're at important junction here."
Glad for the out Mike just gave a week smile turned around and angled for
the cell further along and opposite from the "rubbertorium" as Mike
thought of her working area.
Mike had no idea what Victorian England had been like, but he imagined it
might have looked a lot like the cell of Blaize Beige, or perhaps it
would be more accurate to say the suppressed wet dreams of Sherlock Homes
& Lady Chatterley combined. Beige, a compact brunette, who dressed a lot
like what Mike imagined Lady Chatterley might have in an expensive
Hollywood version of the story, was without a customer and sat on a chase
lounge in her area smoking on a water piper that gave off a pale fawn
smoke that smelled of moss & licorice, as bright as Cherry's cell was,
Blaize's was dark & cluttered, both with beauty equipment and antiques of
a type Mike thought were called rococo, which was also a good word to
describe her work area, while large it was still stuffed to overflowing
with bric-a-brac, curios, and strange looking beauty aids hovering at
the algebraic nexus point between ancient, fantastic & torture devices.
Most of the space however was taken up with racks of clothing as Blaize
did not just style the hair of her clients; she styled their lives, all
with an eye on the past, Mike had never seen so many bottoms, straps &
crinoline in his life.
"Ahhh," said Ms Beige drawing on the hookah one last time while getting
up. "The corsets are here at last, it's so hard to get whale bone these
days."
She raises an eyebrow at Mike as she sighs. "Don't worry mister Vest,"
she said. "I wouldn't think of buying them unless they were already very
old, it was a horrid practice, but we can't let them go to waste can we?"
Before Mike could fail to come up with an answer the small women in the
button shoes continued, "Oh, and if there is anything for Saffron let me
sign it, she's in Japan this week catching up of the latest permutations
in Harajuku style."
Blaize was referring not to the expensive spice, but to Madori Saffron
Suzamoto the women whose salon station was across from hers. Saffron was
as modern as Beige was old fashion though every bit as kinky, the small
beaming Japanese woman who dressed like a anime action figure was the
only person in The Nova that didn't give Mike the creeps, even though the
vibrant... no gaudy cartoon explosion she had for a work station where
relatively normal looking people sat down but Dr. Who's version of Suzy
Wong or geishas visiting from Krypton got up tended to give him a
headache if he stared at it too long.
Leaving Saffron's packages in her area Mike took a deep breath, almost
half over, but what a half left. Pushing his dolly down the long room and
to the left he found himself at the stall of Olive Verdant, a woman who
insisted that everyone call her Mother.
Stepping into her stall always made Mike think he was taking a day trip
to Yoda's place on Dagoba, "Though Yoda did more pruning." Mike thought
to himself, the cell was like someone had dug up a rectangle of jungle
and transported it to the city giving it lights & air conditioning, even
Mother Olive's salon chair seemed to be made out of living wood!
At first Mike was relieved that the voluptuous latter-day hippy was also
without a customer, stepper up to where she stood behind a massage table
that seemed oddly lumpy and in need of watering he was about to lay her
package on top of it when she held up a hand "not there sweetie!" she
said, "In use don't you see?"
Looking harder at the table Mike gasped and stepped back there not only
was someone on it, that someone was nude!
He had not noticed them due to the thick mix of herbs, leaves, loam, &
moss the woman was covered in, blushing Mike could not help but steal
glances at the figure on the table as he was forced to hold the UPS form
over them while Mother Olive signed it, the woman was tall, and even more
voluptuous than the person working on her, at least 350 pounds, the
woman's shapely curves made her look like a topographical map for the
hill's of San Francisco.
"Sorry Mr. Brunkus this won't take a moment."
"Don't worry Mother," said the figure on the table. "Take as long as you
like, if this treatment really helps me bulk up and re-grows my hair I
don't care how long it takes."
Ignoring the mischievous smile Mother Olive gave him as she slapped
another handful of leafy compound onto the plush womanly thighs on the
table before her Mike did a quick about face and stumbled into the
station of the only man working at The Nova, Blu Balzac.
"Pardon me!" was the acidy greeting of the exotic looking man of
indeterminate ancestry who Mike was sure had never buttoned up a shirt
beyond the bottom 2 in his life.
"I'm working here! Yes, yes signing for the boxes, so very important,
there!" he said scribbling his name, without another word he turned back
to his customer a tan woman with wild hair dressed in what looked like
torn uncured leather, making a quick movement toward her face he came
away and Mike saw that a large bone now pierced their nose, not wanting
to know if this customer was a man or woman Mike left even quicker than
he had Mother's cell.
Which took him to the "normal" station of Raven Starry Nightshade, not
that the tall thin woman who always wore black on maroon and whose
midnight hair meet the tops of her thighboots was normal, but her station
was the only one that looked like what Mike thought a salon should look
like.
In fact it looked like something from a photo taken in the 40's, other
than Raven standing in the middle of it, and the odd glowing crystals or
strange device situated here and there, otherwise it looked down right
quaint, and the woman setting in Raven's chair was a real looker today
too, truth be told the woman who sat there, eyes closed was an exact
double Jane Russell as she appeared in the 1943 film The Outlaw.
Raising a finger to her lips so that Mike would remain silent Raven
signed for her boxes while waving him off. "Well Mister Redding, are you
ready to see the finished results? I think you'll be amazed," she said
picking up an old-fashion mirror. Mike, still not use to that sort of
thing he beat a hasty retreat.
Hearing a man's voice behind him say, "What the hell!"
He turned around and looked straight into the eyes of Silver Starshine,
the last member of the Nova team, who was standing outside the entrance
to her area, her arms crossed, an amused look on her face, or as amused
as a bald woman who to the casual glance appeared to be an android
constructed mainly from silver, platinum & crystal.
"Mike, I'm disappointed," she said while behind her the futuristic
chambers, vats, and ray-thingies that made up her weird salon station
shimmered & hummed.
"I mean after me of all the coven, I mean staff, is able to talk you into
a little makeover you don't call, you don't write, and when you come
though here it's as if you're trying to time it so I'm not in, aren't you
happy? I did my best to read the real inner you and bring it out, I'm
free right not, want me to take another crack at getting at the real you?
On the house!"
Clearing his throat Mike makes a delaying action of loosing a collar that
isn't too tight in the first place, which as his finger rubs against the
skin under his shirt only reminds him of Silver first makeover an
experience Mike tended to try to suppress.
When he had first come in Mike Vest had been a heavily freckled coppery
redhead who burned on even the mildest summer day, Silver convincing him
she could help as well as make him "The perfect UPS man". Her method had
involved a shining chamber that hummed and strayed him with some odd
smelling stuff, while what what looked like shafts of lightning played
over him.
Whatever it was, on stepping out he found himself coated, body and even
each individual hair, in what Silver called Nu-Skin-X, a kind of living
latex that not only let the skin under it breath & sweat, but didn't
inhibit the sense of touch, even healing itself if cut, he also found
that he now, from head to foot, appeared to be made out of milk chocolate
just a shade lighter than his UPS uniform, he even smelled faintly of the
substance!
At the time despite his loud protests Silver insisted she couldn't take
the Nu-Skin-X off without harming him and he would have to wait until he
"shuffted it off like a snake."
"Here let me try something," Silver had said running a beam of light over
him, letting it linger uncomfortably long in his eyes.
"Sorry, nothing I can do," said Silver, however for some reason Mike had
felt less upset after that, even forgetting the whole thing, as far as
one can forget being made to look like living chocolate anyway.
A month later, still a "chocolate man" and he had another delivery to The
Nova, and things all came into focus again, his finger coming out from
making a delaying action with his collar.
"You know Mike," said Silver eyeing him intensely, "I really didn't do
everything I had in mind for you, I've got some great ideas."
"Like what?" asked Mike not believing that question was really coming out
of his mouth.
"Well!" said Silver enthusiasm seeming to make her eyes spark. "First
I've found a new thing I can do with Nu-Skin-X, I can install heels
directly on the feet, heels you can adjust height of with a little
electronic stitch I can put right in your hand, just touch two fingers
together and go from half an inch to four and a half just like that!"
"Oh," she continued. "And I have this new device I've been working on
that does wonders for body molding, take a look, it's over in the corner
right there!" she said pointing to what looked like a glass table that
instead of having a flat surface had a concave surface in the shape a
human body, if that is, the human in question was Pamela Lee Anderson.
"Care to try it?" she finished.
Appalled all Mike wanted to do was run, grabbing his empty dolly he
blurted out "Okay, that might be interesting." The hum from the bright
light she had flashed in his eyes a month earlier coming to his mind.
The next thing Mike knew Silver was saying goodbye to him and he was
wheeling his dolly back to the entrance, all the other stylists of the
Nova waved as she left, while the place truly did creep him out, now that
he was leaving he felt just great, better than ever even, as he walked
out the glass doors of the Nova into the sunlight that no longer burned
him, he couldn't help but catch a glance of his 38 22 38 figure and the
long wave of chocolate hair dow his back, a momentary twinge made him
pause, then he continued, his newly plush rump swaying due to the effect
of his 3 inch heels, just what was different he could not quite put his
finger on.
The rest of the town however was soon to be meeting the world's first
living non-melting chocolate bunny, playboy bunny that is.
