"Look!" He Said
"You're being a pig, Chris. I want you to know that!" she chided him.
Chris belched. "Sorry," he said, "it's the beer." The look on his face
however told a different story. He was amused at the woman's discomfort.
"Well, this isn't what we agreed to! You're being a jerk!"
Chris shrugged his shoulders. It didn't seem to bother him in the least
that his 'date' was upset. He picked up his beer and finished it. He'd had
three already and wanted another.
"Where's the waitress?" he asked as he looked about the bar.
"I haven't seen her for some time," she said, trying to get his attention
again.
"Chris?" she asked, "Is there something wrong?"
Chris' eyes darted to her face quickly and he shook his head.
"No, nothing's wrong" he assured her.
The woman was not satisfied.
"Look at you! You're a mess!"
Chris looked down at his body. He wore a wrinkled white cotton dress shirt
that was unbuttoned almost to his navel. His flat hairless chest peeked
through whenever he moved. His blue jeans weren't dirty, and he also wore
a belt. 'A lot of guys didn't' he thought. The casual suede jacket he wore
was one of his favorites. The dark brown color made his rather narrow
shoulders look wider. He liked that. He hadn't shaved today; perhaps
that's what is bothering her? He rubbed his hand along his jaw. He thought
it made him look rather sexy and had decided to leave it. His dark thick
hair was another matter; it was wavy and somewhat unruly. He'd been
tempted to cut it extremely short but then chickened out at the last
minute. Besides, he liked it; he thought it gave him that bad boy image
that he knew women were really attracted to.
"What?" he said when he finally looked back up at his 'date'.
"You promised you'd play the part of a stud; not some lazy ass too self
centered not to give a shit what his 'date' thinks of his appearance!" she
explained.
Chris shrugged his shoulders again.
"I think I look just fine," he said.
"Well", she huffed, "I don't like it! I'm dressed up and you show up
looking like you slept in your clothes!"
A small smile crossed his face.
"Maybe I did," he said mischievously.
A look of abject horror crossed the woman's face.
"What, you've been with another woman?" she asked dumbfounded.
Chris nodded.
"Yeah, I have," he said. "It was great!" he added with a smile.
"But, but -"
"But what?" he said.
The woman took a deep breath and sighed.
"That's so against the rules!" she snapped.
Chris chuckled.
"So?" he replied.
The woman fell back against the back of the booth they were seated at.
"I don't believe you?!" she said, incredulously. "You promised!"
Chris just stared at her.
"You should try it!" he countered.
The woman's pretty mouth fell open.
"There's no way I'd ever do that!" she said, the disgust plainly evident
in her voice.
Chris just smiled at the woman and cocked an eyebrow.
"I suppose that's why there aren't all that many of us," he said coolly.
Chris spotted the waitress and flagged her down. The woman waited
patiently as he ordered another beer.
"You certainly drink a lot," she said.
"Now that's none of your business, Honey!" he replied under his breath.
"Honey?" she repeated sharply. "I'm not your Honey!"
"Isn't that obvious?" he asked her.
The woman's brow furrowed.
"I'm afraid I don't understand?" she said.
"Well," he said, as the waitress returned and put another glass of beer on
the table in front of him "like I said, you should try it".
The woman rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, right" she said.
"You just made my point for me," he said as he picked up his glass of
beer. He took another drink of beer and put the glass back down on the
table.
"You seem to want me to behave in a certain manner," he said. "But you
don't have any appreciation for what I have to do to be what you ask"
The woman scoffed and looked away from him.
"No, really," he said. "I know you think I'm not telling you the truth;
but the reality is very different."
There was an awkward moment of silence between them that seemed to last an
eternity.
"The money is beyond great!" he said, as he drank from his glass of beer
again.
"I don't care!" she cried, "I still wouldn't do it! I couldn't do it!"
Chris nodded his handsome head and smiled.
"That's why there are so very few of us," he said, "They're just too many
women without any guts!"
The woman rolled her eyes again and sighed.
"You're right, of course!" she finally said. "But do you have to be so
damn smug about it?"
Chris actually laughed.
"You've got to be kidding me?" he said. "Look around you! How many men do
you see in this bar? I'm the only 'guy' here!" he snapped angrily. "It's
not my fault women haven't got the guts to do what I do for a living. Just
like it's not my fault the bio genetic war took out all the men!"
The woman looked at Chris with a pained expression. He was right. There
was no denying it. She was young, blonde, pretty, and ready to make a
baby. She looked at Chris across the table from her. She had settled. She
had no choice if she wanted a child. She took another deep breath and let
it out.
"Can we just get on with it?" she asked in an irritated tone.
Chris shrugged again.
"You sure you want me to father your child?" he asked.
The woman looked down at her drink that she never touched and silently
nodded.
"You realize that once the deed is done I'm out of the picture? The child
will be your responsibility?" he asked.
The woman nodded her head. She was painfully aware of the situation.
"Good", he said, as he finished his fourth beer, "I just wanted to make
sure we were on the same page. I have to. It's part of the job".
She nodded her head again and looked up at him; the father of her child to
be. Her daughter. There would never be any more sons; for anyone.
"Must we speak of this here?" she asked suddenly embarrassed by their
topic of discussion.
"What's to hide?" he asked her calmly. "Everybody here knows what I am and
what we are going to do?" he added.
"Still!" she croaked her throat obviously dry.
"It's alright," he said calmly, trying to give her some comfort.
"No," she said, "it will never be alright again! Not as long as there are
no men in the world!"
Chris didn't know if he should be offended or not. He took a breath and
let it out.
"I'm here," he offered.
"What? You? You're no man!" she spat. "You're just some reasonable
facsimile looking to get laid every night!"
Chris' body jerked back, hitting the back of the booth.
"Look," he said coldly, "if it weren't for women like me the human race
would have died out long ago!"
