The Set-up
By Margaret Jeanette
Lucille Fletcher was enjoying her favorite television show. There
was a commercial and she looked at her husband who was dusting her
knick-knack collection in a glassed-in end table. He was wearing a
red blouse and blue tight straight nylon skirt with a red stripe up
the side. His red heels matched the red in his outfit.
He was a cross dresser and Lucille figured if he wanted to dress
like that she might as well use him to do the jobs she hated. He
only liked to dress-up about once a week or so. That made the jobs
she wanted him to do pile up. It was always after work so he didn't
have a lot of time to do everything she wanted done. Dusting all of
her knick-knacks would take him all evening.
She got an idea and before he knew it she had a picture of him
kneeling and dusting in his outfit. She told him she had to have a
picture of him because he looked so nice. He just smiled and she
got another picture of him looking at her and smiling.
That night as they were getting ready for bed she thought about
how she could get him to do more around the house.
"Terry, you wear your pretty clothes so infrequently that there
are always jobs I would like you to do that you don't have time
for. I think if I'm going to allow you to dress when you want I
should also be able to have you dress when I want you to. How does
that sound?"
"You know I don't get the urge much. I am trying to curb it as
much as I can. I don't think dressing more often will help that.
Tonight was the first time in over two weeks that I really had the
urge."
"That's the problem. There is so much I have for you to do, and
when you're wearing your slacks and shirt you don't do the good job
you do while wearing a dress. All I'm asking is if I can pick when
you wear your dresses sometimes. You can still wear them when you
get the urge."
"I still don't think that's necessary. I know I'm doing things
you don't care to do, and there are things I don't care to do too,
but I do them. Why can't you just accept the fact I'm trying to
change and it isn't easy?"
"Did you ever think about the fact that maybe I don't want you to
change? I have grown used to seeing you in a dress or blouse and
skirt. You really don't look too bad wearing them. You walk just
like a woman in your heels. Sometimes I see you as a girlfriend
when you're dressed in a really nice dress. Now, can't you give me
just this one thing and let me decide sometimes what you are going
to wear?"
"I don't know if that's such a good idea. Most days I don't want
anything to do with a dress."
"I have an idea that might change your mind. You know those nice
pictures I took of you tonight? I could E-mail them to Donna, your
secretary. I am sure she would get a chuckle out of them."
"You can't do that! She doesn't know anything about this! You
must be nuts to think you can do that!"
"If you don't agree to what I want I will do exactly that. Now
what do you say?"
"I guess I have to give it a try."
The next day at work he got a sizable order for some small parts
and bearings for one of his four customers. It would mean over six
hundred dollars profit for him. He checked the order and forwarded
it to Donna so she could place it.
He leaned back in his chair and thought how great this business
was. The customers called him and placed orders and all he had to
do was see that the orders were forwarded to the proper
distributors
Then the conversation at bedtime came back to him. He didn't like
it that Lucy was going to decide what he was going to wear. He knew
she could be very dominating sometimes and he knew she would take
it further than he wanted to go.
That night when he arrived home he was sure she was going to have
him change, but she surprised him, telling him they were going out
for supper. More than surprised, when she said they should go to
his favorite restaurant he was happy.
At bedtime she surprised him by presenting him with a silk
nightgown to wear, telling him he should experience the joy of a
soft nightgown. He liked how it felt. She wore a pair of plain
cotton pajamas.
The next morning he thought the nightgown felt like it was
kissing his body. He wore it for breakfast instead of getting
dressed first. Lucy told him he looked very feminine in his
nightgown and that he would look better if he had lipstick on. But
he had never worn lipstick before and he wasn't about to start now.
That day as he was getting a cup of coffee he saw Donna reading
her E-mails. He saw she had two from Lucy. He asked her about them
and she told him she often gets mail from Lucy.
Back in his office he wondered what Lucy had to say to Donna that
took two E-mails. He didn't like it that they exchanged so many
E-mails. He made a mental note to ask Lucy about it.
That night when he asked Lucy about the E-mails she told him that
a soap opera she watched was a favorite of Donna's and she was just
keeping her updated on what was happening on it. This satisfied his
curiosity.
Lucy had a blue dress out for him to wear and had him clean the
kitchen that evening. He didn't feel the same as when he chose to
wear a dress himself. He was finishing by polishing the counters
and it was close to bedtime when Lucy came and told him tomorrow
night he could clean the refrigerator and oven. He was going to
argue with her but she said it in such a commanding voice he didn't
say a word.
That night as he got into bed and the nightgown caressed his body
he thought about when he had first put on a dress. It was the day
after his sister had gone to the prom and he saw her prom dress
lying on the floor in her room. Something in him had made him try
it on. It felt heavenly to him and he'd wished he could wear
clothes like that. He was immediately hooked. And when his sister
came home she'd called him into her room, pointed to the dress and
told him it wasn't lying the way it had been when she left it. She
told him she knew he had worn it. He admitted to her he had. Their
parents were gone and she told him she wanted to see how he looked
in it and had him put it on. She told him he was going to help her
clean the house when their parents were gone, and he was going to
wear a dress while doing it.
She kept her word, and one day as he was helping her at lunch she
asked him which outfit he thought was the sexiest. He told her it
had to be her cheerleading outfit. The next time she had him wear
it and he fantasized he was a cheerleader. After she'd graduated
and moved out of the house she gave him the cheerleading outfit.
She'd never said anything to their parents about him.
The next morning he was wearing the nightgown for breakfast again
and Lucy knew she had him hooked on nightgowns. In her most
commanding voice she told him not to forget he was going to clean
the refrigerator and oven tonight. She noticed when he was wearing
a dress or anything feminine he was much more submissive. She just
loved the new-found power she had over him.
That day at work all that was on his mind was how much more
demanding Lucy was becoming. He didn't like it and wondered how he
could stop it. Somehow he knew Lucy wasn't going to stop where
things stood now but he had no idea where she was going with this.
That night as he cleaned the refrigerator and oven she got three
more pictures of him wearing the bright orange and red border print
dress. He did an excellent job cleaning but was very tired when he
was finished. She handed him a lacier silk nightgown to wear to bed
that night and he didn't say a thing when he put it on.
The next day was Friday and a slow day at work. Donna closely
watched for the moment to put into action the plan she and Lucy had
plotted together. In one E-mail Lucy had asked her if she thought
she could run the business and she'd sent a reply that she was sure
she could play solitaire on the computer for the biggest part of
the afternoon like he did.
He was looking forward to lunch because he and Lucy always went
for lunch together on Fridays. At ten minutes to twelve Donna
walked into his office.
"I have to talk to someone and you are the handiest. Last night
my boyfriend dropped me. I was sure he was going to give me a ring
and he left me because he found a girl who was more daring than I
am. I don't know what to do!"
"Donna, there is someone out there who is just the right person
for you. I can still remember when I broke up with my girlfriend.
We had gone together since our junior year in high school and I was
just about ready to give her an engagement ring when she found
someone else and broke up with me. I thought it was the end of the
world but then I met Lucy and the rest is history. So you see
things will work out better than before. "
She was applying lipstick to her lips and stood up and as he rose
she went to him and thanked him and gave him a kiss. They were in
this embrace when Lucy walked in. She let out a loud gasp. They
heard it and broke the embrace.
"So, this is what you two do all day. I imagine that couch in the
corner gets a quite a workout. I think I have to make some changes
around here."
Donna made an attempt to explain what had happened but Lucy cut
her off saying she had seen with her own two eyes what was going
on. She said he would be late coming back from lunch as he had to
go home to change before coming back.
She told him to come with her and she drove to a restaurant close
by where he often went to lunch at. As they ate she told him he
still had lipstick on his lips. They finished eating and she told
him as long as he was wearing lipstick already he should go put
more on. She handed him lipstick from her purse and commanded him
to go put on a fresh coat. He didn't want to but got up and left to
do as she said..
In the bathroom he thought about how he was in a mess but he had
no idea what Lucy was going to do. He knew it was impossible to
talk to her when she was angry. He was applying a fresh coat of
lipstick and wondered why he was doing it. He had never worn
lipstick before but it didn't feel bad at all.
He returned to the table and Lucy told him he looked just great
wearing lipstick. She told to keep it so he could wear it all the
time. He put it in his pocket and wondered what she meant when she
told him they had to go home to change first.
At home she was more commanding sounding very angry with him.
"Get undressed, NOW!"
He did as she said and was surprised when she put a chastity belt
on him telling him this would make sure he wouldn't go any further
than kissing Donna. Then she glued breast forms on him telling him
she got C-cups because she still loved him even thought he was
obviously having an affair with Donna. He kept trying to tell her
he wasn't having an affair with Donna. She wouldn't let him say
anything telling him to shut up. He had never seen her this angry.
When she was done he was wearing a fancy white blouse and his
tightest black sheath skirt with black patterned nylons. She got
his black pumps out with the four inch heels. He would always wear
them for an hour at the most and then take them off and wear a pair
of black flats.
She combed his hair so he had bangs of a sort and then tied a
silk scarf around his head like a small turban. She told him
tomorrow his hair would be taken care of. She told him he was
walking on thin ice as far as she was concerned. She told him she
still loved him even though it was evident he was having an affair.
He tried to answer her but she told him she didn't want to hear any
stories from him.
She drove him back to work and went in with him. Donna laughed
when she saw him. Lucy said she had an important announcement to
make.
"Donna, you said you were sure you could run this business. Well,
now you have your chance. Effective immediately you are in charge
and Terri will be your secretary. That's Terri with an I not a Y.
You can move your things into his old office and get to work. I
expect you to do the job he did and make sure he does his new job.
Do you understand? I expect you to be firm with him."
"I am sure I can do that. Now Terri there is a lot of filing to
do. You can get busy I am sure you know where everything goes."
He wanted to get away from the two women as fast as possible and
started filing. He was shocked that it appeared there was over two
weeks of papers to be filed. Lucy and Donna were talking in her new
office and had the door closed. He wondered what they were talking
about so long.
Lucy came out finally and she looked a little messier than she
did before she went in. He wondered about that but didn't think
much of it. He had worked it out where he separated the invoices by
customer and date and was breezing along. He was glad he was able
to sit to do this as it was easier on his legs.
He got over three quarters of the stuff filed by the end of the
day. When Donna came out she was surprised at how much he had
gotten done. She told him she was surprised that Lucy had made her
the boss and him the secretary. He reminded her he still owned the
business and told her he was just going along with what Lucy
wanted.
When he got home Lucy was wearing a pair of his jeans and one of
his shirts. He didn't say anything about it even though he hated
seeing her in them. She told him he would need more dresses for
work and that they were going shopping after supper to get him some
new clothes.
They had one of Lucy's quick meals and were soon shopping. He
didn't have a lot of experience shopping for dresses although he
had bought two of his dresses at Christmas time in the same store
they went to first. Lucy picked out bright colored ones that were
very feminine for him. She picked out four that she knew would look
good on him and that would draw attention to him.
He was surprised when she picked out six of the fanciest panties
for him then it was five long line bras followed by five fancy
nightgowns. She was evidently looking at keeping this up for some
time.
They found him four more pair of shoes in different styles. The
highest heel was three inches so he felt pretty good about that.
When she got two girdles he said he didn't think they were
necessary but she said he needed a little stomach control. At the
check-out she told him loud enough for the clerk to hear that as
long as everything was for him he should pay for it. He handed the
card to the clerk who looked at it and chuckled as she ran it
through the scanner.
Back at home after he put the new clothes away Lucy told him what
was her side of the closet was now his. She told him tomorrow he
was to organize the closet better. She said she was making a list
of things for him to do so nothing would be forgotten. Then she
sprung the surprise on him.
"I made an appointment for you at the beauty shop for tomorrow.
You have to be there at ten. Wear something comfortable, maybe that
floral sundress and those white sandals we got tonight. You don't
need nylons with those."
He thought he didn't need to go to the beauty shop and asked why
she had made an appointment for him.
"I made it so you can look your best. I have already told them
what to do so all you have to do is be there. They said Samantha
would work on you and I know she can be pushy but you shouldn't
mind that. She is an excellent hairdresser and does the best work.
I expect you to serve me breakfast in bed at eight tomorrow
morning. I'll have two eggs over easy, toast with strawberry jelly
and orange juice. I expect you to be dressed and there is an apron
hanging on the back of the closet door for you to wear when you
serve it. Do you think you can remember that or all you thinking
about is Donna?"
"I can remember that! Why can't you let me explain what
happened?"
"I don't need some story from you. What I saw was explanation
enough."
He was saddened that she wouldn't at least let him tell her what
had happened and that it was all innocent. He wore a new nightgown
that night.
The next morning he was wide awake at six. He got up and dressed
as she said then went into the bathroom and shaved close. Then he
went and made some coffee for him. It was too early to make her
breakfast so he waited until the coffee was ready.
He sat and thought about what had happened. He wondered why she
had the chastity belt and breast forms all ready. Then it dawned on
him that this was a set up deal. Lucy and Donna had set it up. He
was angry at first, then decided to see what happened next.
He had two cups of coffee before it was time to start her
breakfast. He had put the red lipstick on and when he was making
her breakfast he wondered why she hadn't included the usual two
slices of bacon she liked. He made her breakfast with the bacon. It
was ready when he remembered she had said about wearing an apron.
He was surprised when he saw the full length full-skirted apron. It
had a strap that went over the head and two long straps to tie in
the back. It was white with lace trimming it all around. He got it
on and took her breakfast to her.
"You look lovely in your apron. You look just like you are meant
to serve me. I see you added bacon to the breakfast. How sweet that
you remembered I like bacon with my eggs. Maybe we can skip the
maid training."
He left her with her breakfast wondering what she meant about
maid training. He was positive now this was a set up to get him
into a dress full time. The only thing was how long she intended to
keep this up.
He got her dishes after she was done and put them in the
dishwasher and started it. She came from the living room and told
him from now on he was to hand wash all the dishes. He didn't care
for that but didn't argue.
He was polishing the kitchen counters when Lucy came and handed
him a list of things to do. He looked at the list and started
organizing the things in the order he would do them. It was a long
list and he knew he wasn't going to get everything done today.
He put the first load of laundry in and when he came out of the
laundry room Lucy told him it was time for him to go to the beauty
parlor. She drove him there and went in with him. Lucy and Samantha
were talking and walked away from him. Two minutes later Lucy was
back and told him she would pick him up when they called.
Samantha came and got him and took him to a place where pedicures
were done. She told him to take his shoes off and put his feet into
the water. He did it and the water was warm and felt nice. He
watched as she did his pedicure and really enjoyed when she
massaged his lower leg and feet with a white lotion. When she
started putting polish on his toenails he asked if that was
necessary and she said his wife had picked out the color.
The pedicure was over and she took him to a room in back and told
him to strip to his panties. He had no idea what was going on so he
did as she said. She told him to lie on the table on his stomach.
He felt something warm on his skin. It didn't feel bad at all. She
even pulled the leg openings up of his panties and put something
there. He saw there was a gauze-like material hanging from a holder
on the wall but didn't know what that was for.
When she ripped the first piece of gauze from him he let out a
scream. She told him to be quiet that all he was getting was a
complete body wax to remove his body hair and that they did it
everyday to women and they didn't scream like that. He was quiet
through the rest of the peeling. After she had his backside done
she rubbed lotion all over where she had done. That felt great to
him and he thought it was worth it for the massaging she did.
He was prepared for the front side and only let out a loud gasp
once during the peeling. After it was done she told him to get
dressed and she would come and get him after she set up for the
next step.
It was almost ten minutes before she came and got him. She led
him to her chair and he saw a wig on a head from sitting on the
counter. It was black, the same color as his hair and was long and
curly. He wondered if that was for him then thought it must be a
model for one of the hair stylist to follow.
Samantha turned him towards her and was looking over his face
carefully. He asked what she was doing.
"I am studying your facial features and coloring to see what
colors I need to make you pretty. Your wife told me you are having
an affair with your secretary and she wants you real pretty for
her. I am going to make sure you are as pretty as you can be. My
husband had an affair and we divorced. If I would have thought of
this I would have done it to him. You men are all alike. You will
screw anyone who crosses your path!"
He knew she was a man-hater and wasn't going to take pity on him.
"I have a question for you that I would like answered. When was
this appointment set up?"
"I believe it was Wednesday or Thursday. Why do you ask?"
"I was just wondering. My wife saw my secretary give me a kiss on
Friday yet she had everything set up before that. I know I was set
up and I know who set everything up!"
"You men always have an answer for everything. My husband said I
was imagining things but I knew better. Now, just let me do what I
have to do."
She started by tweezing his eyebrows. It hurt but he didn't make
a sound. Then she started on his make up. She took what seemed to
him a long time but explained every step to him. He had a couple of
questions about how she was doing something and she answered him.
At one point he asked why she was explaining everything and she
said his wife told her she expects him to do his own make-up as
good as she was doing it. He followed her closely after that. When
the make up was done he looked at himself and was looking at a
completely different person.
Then she took the wig and showed him the underside saying it was
made special so that his real hair could be pulled through the
wider netting. She said to remove it would require a complete head
shave. She said his hair and the hair of the wig would become one.
She set to work and with a small hook started to pull his hair
through the openings in the netting. It hurt when she pulled and he
wondered if she wasn't doing that on purpose. He said something
about it and she took more care after that. It took forever for her
to get done but finally she was done. She brushed the wig and his
hair until she had it just as she wanted it. When he finally got to
see himself he was amazed at how he actually did look like a woman.
Then she took him to a regular chair by a little table with a
padded wrist rest. She told him he was getting a manicure. He was
soaking his fingertips in a solution and could feel the solution
vibrating. She worked on one hand cleaning up his cuticles and he
watched as she worked. He thought this wasn't bad. She did both
hands then started roughing up his nail surface. He asked what she
was doing and she told him she was getting his nails ready for a
set of false nails.
When she started applying the false nails he said they stuck out
pretty far and she told him these were just blanks that she could
cut them to any length and shape them. He settled down then.
She got all the nails glued on and told him it was special glue
that was stronger than super glue. Then she took a very small
grinder and started to shape his nails. He noticed they were being
ground with a gentle curve to a soft point. They weren't any
shorter than the blanks were at the point. She finished grinding
and told him it took a special grinding wheel to cut them. They
were guaranteed not to crack or break. As she was applying polish
she told him his wife had already made an appointment for him to
get them filled in two weeks and again in four weeks. She said he
was lucky that she hadn't set up the body waxing again in two weeks
but had set it up for four weeks. She finished and the nails were
a soft shiny pink. She told him to sit and let them dry while she
called his wife to pick him up.
He kept looking at his nails and wondering why they were so long.
The shine captured his eyes and he couldn't take them off his
nails. He got lost in his mind and didn't even realize when Lucy
arrived.
Samantha had to shake him to bring him back to reality. She
handed him a plastic pouch which she said was all the cosmetics she
had used. She said he should bring the empties back to get refills
so they would get the right colors. He put the pouch in his purse.
Samantha told him the make up was so good it would last at least a
couple of days and that was a plus as he wouldn't have to do his
make up every day.
In the car he asked Lucy how long she intended to keep this up.
He said he wanted to remind her that he only dressed on rare
occasions.
"You know you like wearing dresses. I told you there were things
I would like you to do and you do such a good job on them. Actually
a better job than I do. I guess you can count on wearing dresses
for the foreseeable future. The whole house needs a good cleaning
and I am sure I can come up with more things for you to do.
Samantha did an excellent job on you. How did you like the waxing?"
"It wasn't so bad except for when they tear the strips off. That
hurts quite a bit! All in all most of the visit was enjoyable. Why
did you have them make my finger nails so long?"
"I just decided you should be as feminine as possible. The longer
the fingernail the more feminine it looks, right?"
"I guess so, but I don't think they had to be this long."
"Well they are and you will just have to get used to them. It
should only take a year or so before they will have grown out far
enough for your own nails to be that long. Of course with the
filler you use you still won't be able to cut them yourself. Maybe
I should tell them to leave them grow out and not take any off the
end and see how long you can get them."
He hoped she was teasing him but he never knew. She stopped at a
strip mall and soon he had a woman's watch and three bracelets and
four rings on his fingers. His ears were pierced in three places on
each ear and he thought she was done.
She wasn't, and took him to a women's store he didn't know
existed. It was a trendy woman's store where he ended up with a
bikini swimsuit and two mini dresses. One had a skirt so short he
thought it was a long blouse. It came with a wide black shiny belt
that was wider than the skirt was long.
Back in the car she said he probably wouldn't have a lot of time
to do his chores so they were going to stop for an early supper.
That way he wouldn't have to cook and do the dishes. He looked at
the watch and was shocked that it was after four already. He had
lost all track of time in the beauty shop.
In the restaurant they were greeted as two women. They were
seated and ordered. Many questions flew through his mind. Finally
he spoke up.
"What are your intentions, doing this to me? What do you want?"
"My intentions are to keep you in dresses. I want the house clean
and to be taken care of. You don't know how much I loved that
breakfast in bed this morning. I can get used to that fast."
"It seems to me that I can do everything while wearing men's
clothes. Why do I have to wear a dress?"
"You have to wear dresses because I say so and it gives me more
control over you. Besides I think if Donna sees you in a dress she
will not continue your affair."
"We are not having an affair! You have it all wrong!"
"I don't want to hear it. If you continue to say that I will see
to it you won't forget that I don't want to hear anything about
it."
They finished eating and she told him to go redo his lipstick. He
did as she said. He was starting to feel a little depressed that
she wouldn't listen to him.
At home she said it was probably too late for him to get anything
done so he might as well wait until tomorrow to start. He was
thankful for that.
The next morning he changed loads in the washer and hung the
clothes out to dry. By the time Lucy got up he had done a touch up
on the living room and was working on the dining area.
He made her a brunch style meal and returned to the list. He hung
the second load out and the first load was dry so he took it down
and was soon ironing what had to be ironed. Lucy took a picture of
him ironing in his yellow and blue sundress. He looked at the list
and picked the job that he thought would take the longest --
washing all the windows inside and out.
When he had that done he changed the bed linens and cleaned the
bedrooms. All that was left was the bathrooms and he would have the
list done. He speeded it up a bit and started ribs and sauerkraut
in the slow cooker for supper. He put the potatoes on to cook when
he saw the ribs looked ready. Then as the potatoes cooked he did
the half bath. He had done her whole list.
They ate supper almost without comment. Lucy did tell him the
meal was excellent but he didn't acknowledge her praise of his
cooking ability. He went to the basement family room and watched
television while she was in the living room thinking he was still
busy doing the list.
At bedtime without saying a word he handed her the list with
everything checked off. She was surprised he had gotten everything
done in one day. He put on a nightgown and went to bed without
saying good night to her.
The next morning he dressed in a white dress with an orchid print
on it and wore his white sandals. He had his usual three cups of
coffee and left for work while Lucy was still sleeping. He usually
woke her before he left to give her a kiss and tell her he loved
her. Not today because he had things to do.
He was sorting the last things to be filed when Donna came in. He
finished filing the papers and made a phone call. Donna came out
and heard him say something about them only being fifty thousand
dollars apart.
At ten to twelve he went into Donna's office. He asked if she had
a minute and she said she did.
"I have to talk to you about something important. Last Friday you
came to me about breaking up with your boyfriend and I gave you the
best answer I was possible of. I thought of you as more of a friend
than an employee. I know it was a set up, that you went along with
my wife's plan instead of being a friend of mine."
She started crying and admitted his wife had set the whole thing
up to trap him. She said she was very sorry. He then knew she was
truly sorry.
"There is something else I have to tell you. I just put a bid in
on a lakeside place I looked at a month ago. The realtor told me
she was sure it would be accepted and it is only ninety miles from
here. I plan on moving up there as soon as possible."
"Then I will have to get another secretary."
"No, I don't think that will be necessary. You see, I sold the
business and tomorrow a man is going to be here to take over. He
will take over running the business immediately. Tomorrow will be
the last day I have to come in. It will be up to him if he wants to
keep you on or not. I may put in a good word for you; I will have
to see how I feel tomorrow. Do not call my wife or contact her in
any way!"
He walked out and Donna was in shock. She wondered if she was
going to have a job or not.
The phone rang and Donna answered it. The order made her day. She
went out to Terri and showed him an order from a new client. He
asked how it was that they got this order and she told him Dick
Collins was retiring early and had suggested they use us instead of
replacing him. She said they were giving us a two month trial to
see how we did. He was happy for that and told her he should have
upped the ante for the business.
The day came to a close and Donna told him he could have his
office back tomorrow. He told her if she wanted she could keep it,
and said he thought she should keep it. She told him she would
decide tomorrow.
He drove home and Lucy asked him what he was going to make for
supper. He told her he was going to make steaks on the grill. He
started the grill and put two large potatoes in the microwave.
When they started eating he asked if he could wear his men's
clothes tomorrow. He said they were having a special visitor
tomorrow.
"I don't care if the President of the United States is coming --
you are still going to wear a dress."
"If you insist then I will wear one but it might the last day I
do. I called an appraiser today to come appraise this house. I
bought a place up north and am going to move up there. I sold the
business today and tomorrow they are taking over. With what I have
in the bank, of which half is yours, I can live comfortably for
some time. From what the realtor told me I can be living there by
the end of the week."
"Why didn't you consult me on any of this? I should have been in
on it!"
"Remember, you didn't want to hear anything I had to say. All I
intend on doing is splitting everything down the middle. I will
take your half of the house out of the money for the business and
you will have this house all to yourself. I will be gone and not
having anyone telling me what to wear or what to do."
"Can't I move with you? I am your wife after all!"
"I am not inviting you along. You set me up so you could control
me and that was wrong. I knew something drastic had to be done when
I was at the beauty shop. Yesterday instead of us doing something
together we were here but apart. You blew it when you wanted too
much control. Yesterday I realized my love for you had disappeared
when your love for me disappeared, when you forced me to wear a
dress when I didn't want to. A person doesn't do that to someone
they love. Believe it or not I am sorry things didn't work out
between us. I truly am."
"You are mistaken, I do still love you. I love you very much.
Don't do this!"
"You set an elaborate trap for me. Donna told me today that you
got her to be part of it and she feels terrible about that. You are
self-centered, dominating, and don't care who you hurt. This is not
the woman I married. You can do what you want. I do not at this
time figure to file for divorce. If you want to, you can. It's up
to you. My mind is made up."
After supper Lucy sat in the living room and he noticed she
wasn't watching her favorite show. He noticed she would sob, then
stop and start sobbing again. He was surprised that he had no
feelings whatsoever about her sobbing. Any other time he would have
told her everything would be all right, but not this time.
He went and took his shower and shaved. Then he got a nightgown
and went to the spare room to sleep. The next morning he awoke
refreshed.
He was surprised to see Lucy sitting at the table. She must have
awakened early. He poured a cup of coffee.
Lucy said, "I haven't slept all night. That was a pretty
explosive news bit you dropped on me. I am sorry if I hurt you, I
really am. I didn't mean to hurt you. I still love you and hope you
will change your mind about leaving me. I promise you I will never
say or do anything to you again. I can't explain why I did what I
did because right now I don't know why I did it."
"Do you know what is funny? You want me to listen to you but you
wouldn't listen to me when I wanted to explain what happened even
though you set it up. You didn't even give me the chance to
explain. That hurt me a lot. You made the beauty shop appointment
before you even saw Donna and me. You planned everything and got
your way. I knew Saturday it was a set up but I decided to see if
you would change but you weren't about to change. You have
destroyed the trust I had in you. How do you propose to make it so
I can trust you again? I don't think there is anything you can do
to restore that trust."
He left for work and when he arrived he was glad he was wearing
a dress. He felt like wearing a dress. He sat down at the desk
Donna had spent so much time at. She came in five minutes later and
he told her to use the office as long as she could.
About ten thirty a man came in and identified himself as Brent
Holcomb and asked for Terry Fletcher. Terri said he was who he was
looking for and the man gave him strange look. He said he was
doing this to please his wife and the man said he understood. Terri
told him that it probably meant the end of his marriage. Brent said
he was sorry to hear that.
Terry explained that Donna was in the office and that she had
picked up a new customer on a trial basis yesterday. Brent said he
was there to find someone to operate the office until they could
see if the business's customers could be served from Minneapolis.
Terry said that local access was the backbone of his business and
Brent said he would make a note of that. He handed him a check for
the business.
They went into Donna's office and he met Donna. She outlined
where the business was and where they were looking to expand. She
did such a great job of explaining things he immediately offered
her the job of running the office. She was all smiles at hearing
that.
They went for lunch and Brent became more and more interested in
how Donna was going to do business. He said he had been planning on
returning to Minneapolis this afternoon, but had decided he was
going to go back tomorrow instead. He said he wanted to talk to
Donna some more. Terri saw the look on both of them and knew they
both were attracted to one another. When Brent asked if she was
available for supper and she said she was he knew it was true.
Back at the office Brent remained with Donna, so he left at two
after telling Donna he was out of there. He told Brent to call if
he had any questions but Brent said he was sure Donna could handle
any questions he had.
He stopped at the bank and deposited the check and did his
banking business. He got a cashier's check for the place up north.
Then he got a further thought.
He stopped at the beauty shop and asked Samantha if she could get
his wig off. She said she had the time to do it but he would be
bald afterwards. He told her to do it.
It only took her just short of twenty minutes to get it off. Then
he asked about the fingernails and a half hour later he was free of
them. He told Samantha that he was afraid his relationship with
Lucy was over. He told her about how he had been set up and how the
rest was now history. She told him he was special and that he had
changed her mind about some men. They weren't all bad. He paid her
and gave her a generous tip.
When he arrived at home Lucy was gone. He went and changed into
men's clothes. He heard the answering machine beep and played the
message. It was the realtor from up north telling him the seller
had accepted his offer. He called her and told her tomorrow he
would be up there and would give her the check.
He felt great to be back in slacks and a shirt. He went into the
bathroom and managed to get the make-up off. It only took five make
up remover pads to do it. He looked at himself in the mirror and
had to laugh at his bald head.
He heard Lucy return. She came in and he had to laugh. She was
wearing a white tee shirt that read on the front 'I am sorry I hurt
my husband'. It just struck him funny. She came and put her arms
around his neck and said she was sorry for hurting him. She kissed
him and told him she didn't want to lose him.
In his gruffest voice he told her he was going up north tomorrow
to buy the house he had looked at a month ago. She asked if she
could go along. He said she was a city girl and wouldn't like a
secluded country place. She said she really wanted to see it.
Somehow he knew it was a mistake but he agreed she could come along
even though he was taking some clothes and might stay over night
there. She said she still wanted to go along. He said he wanted to
leave by eight and she said she would be ready.
The next morning he was surprised when she walked into the dining
area at seven carrying an overnight bag. She was ready.
They left at eight and by ten they were in the realtor's office.
He signed some papers and the realtor gave him the key. She said
the previous owner had gotten everything they wanted out last
week-end. She told him that he now owned fifteen acres of prime
land including five hundred fifty feet of lake frontage. She told
him there were red posts every hundred feet around the edge of the
property. She said that if he wanted to divide the property he
should keep her in mind. She said in twenty years of being a
realtor this was the first time she'd had a cash customer. He asked
where the closest grocery store was and she told him there was a
general store a mile down the road on the way to his new place.
They left and when they went into the general store they were
surprised to see clothes and hardware besides groceries. They even
sold dresses. He saw one that was red and white checked and he told
Lucy there was a country dress for her. He was surprised when she
put it in the cart.
They got some groceries and when he checked out the woman asked
him where he lived. He told her he just bought the Cartwright
property and was going to be moving up in a short time. She told
him that for all purposes he was a local and took ten per cent off
his bill.
They continued on for about five miles until he turned off and
unlocked the gate. It was a thickly wooded lot and he drove the
long driveway. Around a turn the house came into view. It was a
beautiful two-story log house. Lucy was impressed when she saw it.
It looked so majestic.
Lucy was still wearing her 'hurt her husband' tee shirt and a
pair of slacks. He told her she should change clothes. She looked
around and found a bedroom and went in to change. She came out
wearing the red and white checked dress. He looked at her and she
looked completely different than he had ever seen her before. She
looked desirable to him again. He was back in love with her.
They walked together out on the dock and studied the
surroundings. He saw an eagle flying over the lake and pointed it
out to her. To him this was paradise. He told her he forgave her
under the condition he could wear what he wanted when he wanted.
She told him she already had decided that but that he did look
great in a dress with make-up on.
They went back to the house and she prepared a light lunch for
them. They ate in silence until she said it was so peaceful here.
She said it was like they were in a world all their own. He had to
agree with her. She said they should sell their house and move up
here permanently. He had already decided he was going to move up
here and for some reason was happy she felt the same way.
They were shaken from their silent love by a knocking on the
door. When he answered the door there was a man standing there. He
said he'd talked to the realtor and she'd told him about them and
that the new owners were probably there, so he'd decided to stop to
introduce himself. He said he was the Reverend Wesley Toomey. He
welcomed them to the area and told them they would be welcome at
his church anytime.
For some reason Terry liked him. After about an hour's visit they
were like old friends. Terry told him he was sure he would see them
again.
Terry finished unloading the car and said he wanted to head back
so he could bring a real load up tomorrow. By then Lucy had looked
at the whole house and was impressed with it.
They were just on their way when Terry noticed a machine shop
that had a for sale sign on it. He stopped and went in. He saw six
machines and four of them were running. He asked one operator where
the boss was and the operator pointed to an office.
He knocked on the door and was told to enter. There was an older
man there and he introduced himself. The man introduced himself as
Harvey Simmons. Terry said he'd seen the place was for sale, and
asked about it.
"Well, we are a small operation. We do machining of rolls and
make specialty parts from broken parts. I have four full-time
workers who you saw when you came in. I also have two part-time
workers who help when we need them. The machines are old but
trustworthy. The only problem is getting parts for them when
something goes out. The biggest problem is getting those parts. It
takes over two weeks to get a bearing when one goes out. Right now
there are two machines that need a bearing and I am just going to
order them."
"I see the place is for sale. Why is it being sold?"
"I am seventy-two years old and I think it is time I retired. I
offered it to Hank Strong but he isn't interested. He said he is a
machine operator not a machine shop owner. He doesn't like
paperwork. I know the place is worth more but I am asking
seventy-five thousand for it. Are you interested?"
"Yes, I am very interested. We just bought a place up here and I
know I need someplace to go to get away from my wife. She can't
take me all day, I am sure of that."
Harvey laughed and said he knew exactly what he meant. He said
before his wife died last year he would sometimes tell her he had
work to do here. Harvey was surprised when Terry said he would have
the check here tomorrow sometime. Terry asked to see what bearings
they needed. Harvey gave him the numbers and Terry said he would
get them. They shook hands and Terry left.
He was all smiles when he got into the car. Lucy wondered what he
was so happy about. Finally she couldn't hold it any longer.
"What is the big smile about? I know you did something, what did
you do?"
"I just bought that machine shop. It will be the perfect place
for me to go once we are moved up here. I know something about
running a business and I can run a machine so there will always be
something I can do there. The price was a steal and I couldn't pass
it up."
"Good, I am glad you found something that interests you."
He got on the cell phone and called Donna. He gave her the
numbers of the two bearings and asked if he could have them
tomorrow morning. She asked where he wanted them delivered and he
told her he would pick them up there tomorrow morning. She said
that would not be a problem even though they never did anything
like this before.
They arrived back in town and he stopped at the bank and changed
his mailing address and got a check for the machine shop. He set up
an account for the machine shop and put some money in it.
He decided to rent a small covered truck to get most of the
things they might want to take up there. He got it and by bedtime
had it almost full. He had very little to go into it tomorrow.
The next morning he finished loading with some things from the
house Lucy wanted. It was early yet so he treated Lucy to breakfast
out. After breakfast Lucy asked if they could stop at a dress shop.
It was only a block from his old office so he dropped her off and
told her he would pick her up in a little bit.
He went to his old office and was surprised to see a new
secretary sitting in Donna's old chair. He asked to see Donna and
the secretary buzzed Donna and told her there was a man here to see
her. .
Donna came out of her office and when she saw hi she came and
gave him a big hug. She invited him into her office.
"I have the two bearings you wanted. You aren't going to believe
this but Brent is going to recommend that this office be kept open.
I really like him and he is coming back Friday and he is going to
stay with me for the week-end. We already made plans to go to the
auto races Saturday night. I think he likes me a lot. You made all
of this possible. How are you and Lucy getting along?"
"Well, I guess you can say I have forgiven her but I still don't
have the trust I once had in her. We are moving up north and I
bought a small machine shop up there. I know you can arrange next
day delivery up there so I will be ordering from you for parts. You
might want to explore where to get the best price on raw metal bars
and round stock. Both Lucy and I love the new house. You just have
to come up and see it. Plan on staying over night. I can't stay
long because I left Lucy shopping at a dress shop and she will buy
the whole store if I leave her too long. I am really happy
everything worked out for you."
Donna got up and gave him another hug and a kiss. She showed him
the two bearings and he was surprised that one was very small and
the other very large. He asked for the invoice and Donna said this
order was on her for his help in keeping her on here and his place
in getting her to meet Brent.
He parked in front of the dress shop and was surprised to see
Lucy come right out. She was carrying a large bag but she was now
wearing a white peasant blouse and a long full printed skirt. In
the car she told him she figured she better start dressing country
and laughed.
They drove the truck up and on the way decided to have an estate
sale to get rid of the furniture and appliances they didn't need in
the old house. He stopped at the machine shop and gave Harvey the
two bearings and the check for the business. It was decided to turn
the business over to him to run in a little over two weeks. Harvey
said he had a local lawyer who would have all the papers drawn up
and a financial statement for him. Harvey told him in the meantime
he expected him to stop in and get acquainted with the place. He
said he would definitely do that.
They arrived and it took him several hours to get everything
unpacked from the truck. Lucy came and got him and told him there
was something he just had to see. She led him to the bedroom and
then to a door leading outside. He stepped out on the deck and saw
an empty hot tub all set up waiting for water. He looked around and
saw you could see the lake from here. Lucy said this place was full
of surprises. He walked the length of the deck and saw two other
rooms opened on to it. He hadn't noticed before but he could hear
birds singing all over the place. He would have to get some bird
feeders.
It took some time to get things put away. He told Lucy he wanted
to take a drive to check out the area. She said she wanted to get
everything unpacked so he left alone.
He was driving and looking around at the beautiful scenery when
he saw a church. It was Reverend Toomey's church, with a house
right next door. He pulled in and soon the two of them were sitting
in the yard with lemonades, talking. He told Wesley about buying
the machine shop and how everything was going in the move. He said
he would have to get a fishing boat so he could check out the lake.
He laughed and said it was over ten years since he had gone
fishing. Wesley told him he knew a widow who had a fishing boat
and motor for sale.
They got talking about some real deep subjects and he told Wesley
that a week ago he had been considering divorcing his wife, but
that now they were more deeply in love. Wesley said it was like
they were starting married life all over again, and he agreed.
Wesley asked him if he had thought about renewing his wedding vows.
He answered that he'd never heard of that. Wesley explained how it
was done and volunteered to do it for them. He knew Lucy would go
for it and the little circular opening on the shore of the lake
would be the perfect place for it. He asked if they could do it two
weeks from this Saturday. Wesley said he couldn't see why not.
Wesley's wife came out and they were introduced. She was a pretty
woman but he thought a little on the thin side. She was very
pleasant and before he knew it he was inviting her to the vow
renewal. Wesley had left and came back with a map where he should
go to see the fishing boat and motor.
Twenty minutes later he was hooking the boat and motor to his
truck hitch. Back home it took three shots to get the boat lined
up so he could get it into the water. It was late afternoon and he
went into the house.
Lucy was fixing supper and told him it would be ready in fifteen
minutes. At supper he told her about his visit with Wesley. He
ended by saying a week ago he thought they might be getting a
divorce but now it was apparent they weren't. He said it was like
a new life, and then while providing all the details he sprung the
vow renewal on her. She was thrilled at the idea.
He called Donna and invited her to the renewal and she said Brent
would probably be coming along. He told her to come up on Friday
evening as they had plenty of room for her and Brent.
Lucy was all excited about the vow renewal. She said she would
have to get a new dress and set something up for food. She said she
knew just who to ask for help. He wasn't really interested in the
details.
He told her he was going to return the rental truck tomorrow and
that she could ride along to get the car and get a new dress. She
told him she was making a list of who to invite to the renewal. He
knew she was really into it.
They got the rental truck back and were shopping. She was
surprised when he put a dress in the basket. He told her he thought
it was pretty and it was his size. She just laughed at that
They hired an estate service to conduct the sale of the things
left in the house. The man and woman who would conduct the sale
said they would price the things and get back to them.
Lucy asked Terry to stop at Mader's Catering to see if they were
willing to handle an event that far away. They said they would and
she set up the menu for the renewal vows. She thanked him over and
over for what he was doing for her. He told her it was Reverend
Wesley's idea and that he should get the credit for it. She said
that after all, he'd gone along with it, and that she thought was
very romantic.
Back at home he said he was going to see if there were any fish
in the lake. He went fishing. Ten minutes after he started he
caught a medium sized walleye. An hour later he had two walleyes
and three perch. He decided to go in and clean them for supper.
When they were cleaned he went in to cook them. He found breading
from the previous owner and soon he was serving fresh fish for
supper. Lucy said they were the best fish she had ever eaten. He
said he was going fishing again early tomorrow morning.
The next morning he decided to try the fish locator in the boat.
He had never used one before but by trial and error he figured it
out. He kept the biggest five fish he caught, cleaned them, and ten
minutes later they were in the freezer.
When Lucy saw him she let out a laugh. He was wearing a turquoise
and white knit dress that clung to his body. He had white flats on
and had a scarf tied turban style on his head. She asked him if
he'd gone fishing like that and he replied that he had. He said
he'd felt like wearing a dress today. She came and gave him a kiss
and told him she loved him.
An hour later he said he was going to visit the machine shop. He
arrived there wearing jeans and a shirt. Harvey introduced him to
everyone as the new owner. He asked if he could have a meeting with
everyone. When they were all seated at a table in the corner of
the shop, he told them he wasn't thinking of making any changes
right away. He asked which machine was the biggest problem and all
three agreed it was the milling machine. He said he would look into
getting a different one and saw all three men smile. He invited
Harvey and all three men to the vow renewal with their wives and
children. He said there would be a meal afterwards and they all
smiled and said they would be there. The men went back to work and
Harvey said none of them ever passed up a free meal, then laughed.
He got home and called Donna. He had her check to see about a new
milling machine. She said she would check and get back to him. He
told Lucy about needing a new machine and that he was going to get
one. A half hour later the phone rang and it was Donna. She told
him she'd found one that could be there tomorrow. He told her that
was wonderful, and to send it. He gave her the address of the
machine shop and thanked her.
He called Harvey and told him a new milling machine should arrive
tomorrow. Harvey said he never saw such fast service in his life.
He said the men will love him for that.
The next afternoon he stopped at the machine shop. Tony was
wiring the new machine up and Robert was reading the manual. Robert
said this machine could do things the old one couldn't and it was
computer controlled, but the instructions made it easy to
understand. All three men said it was great to see someone who was
taking an interest in making the shop cutting edge.
Harvey came out of the office and when he saw Terry he headed
right for him. He shook his hand and said it was great to see that
the shop was going to stay running and that his men would have jobs
for the foreseeable future. He said it made him feel like he had
done the right thing in selling it to him. He couldn't believe how
fast Terry could get things.
Time flew and the vow renewal was at hand. Donna and Brent
arrived and marveled at the house and the whole set-up. An hour
after arriving both of them were swimming in the lake. Before they
went to bed the four of them relaxed in the hot tub and had a few
drinks. Donna told him she'd added four new clients, and the
business was growing by leaps and bounds. She said it now had
clients in five different cities if they counted his machine shop
as being in a city. Brent was humorous telling jokes that were
funny and also telling funny stories. Terry could see the love in
their eyes as they looked at one another.
Saturday morning and the big day was here. They were eating
breakfast when the first guests arrived. It was Jim Barrowski who
had been the best man at their original wedding, with his family.
His three children wanted to go swimming in the lake right away.
Then more and more guests arrived. By noon all of their original
wedding party was there. Lucy made a large pan of hot dogs and set
a gigantic bowl of potato salad out for everyone to enjoy.
The service was to be at two, so at one Lucy went to change. Ten
minutes later Terry went to change. It only took him twenty minutes
to get into his suit and make himself presentable for the ceremony.
He walked outside and saw the Reverend and his wife. He showed him
where the ceremony was to take place.
By five minutes to two everyone had their places and was seated.
Terry was standing up front and just happened to look as Lucy made
her appearance. She was beautiful in an egg shell white dress with
a wreath of flowers on her head. She made the short trip to stand
in front of Reverend Wesley. They held hands as he told how a
couple meets speed bumps and glories in their wedded life. He said
that love conquers all and that Terry and Lucy were proof that
adversity can bring you closer to one another. Then he started the
renewal of their wedding vows. It was a beautiful service and
lasted just a couple of minutes short of a half hour. When it was
over Terry shook his hand and thanked him. He handed him a fifty
dollar bill but Wesley wouldn't take it. Terry argued with him
until he agreed to take it.
There were a little over sixty people there and Terry and Lucy
were making the rounds to talk to every one of them. Terry noticed
Donna and Brent standing on the end of the dock. He saw Donna throw
her arms around Brent's neck and give him a kiss. He was glad she
had found someone to love.
He then talked to Robert, who told him the new milling machine
was fabulous. They were interrupted when Donna came running up to
him and threw her arms around his neck and gave him a kiss on his
lips. She broke the hug and said "Guess what!" and he didn't have
any idea what she was talking about. She held out her hand and he
saw the expensive engagement ring on her finger. He congratulated
her, and when Brent came to join them he congratulated him.
"Brent doesn't believe in wasting time. He told me he didn't want
me to get away and proposed to me! I can't believe it! I am engaged
to the most wonderful man in the world!"
"I just didn't want her to get away. You don't meet girls like
her everyday, you know"
Terry agreed with him and told him he was getting a special
woman. He asked if they would stay the night and both agreed.
Everyone was having a great time.
At suppertime everyone sat at the six long tables that had been
set up. The caterer had made a roast pig with a turkey inside, plus
two chickens. With all the side dishes everyone ate in style.
After supper everyone came and said their good-byes before they
left. By eight o'clock just Donna and Brent were left with Terry
and Lucy. Terry suggested that Donna and Brent use the hot tub.
Both of them agreed happily that it was a great idea. They left to
get their swim suits on.
Terry took Lucy's hand and led her to the bench at the end of the
dock. They sat in silence watching the sun as it set over the lake.
They sat for over a half hour enjoying the view. It grew dark.
"Dear, I have to tell you I want to thank you for marrying me
again. You were beautiful. Where did you get the flowers for your
hair? You looked like a goddess to me. I love you!"
"Thank you, I love you also. I have to tell you something. I love
you no matter what. I love you whether you are wearing a suit or a
dress. You are special and I know it. When I thought I was going to
lose you I felt terrible. I believe we are meant to be for eternity
and I vow to do whatever it takes to hang on to you. I love the
total you with your masculine side and your feminine side. I am
proud of you that you are not afraid to address either side. That
makes you truly special in my mind."
They kissed and both knew they would be together until the end of
time as they knew it.
