Uncle Monty's Tale
This tale is how Scotty met Nicole's and Larry's father. Please read the
tale of Oh No before reading this one. Peace. Belle.
Greeting everyone. Scotty here. This tale deals with Anthony James
Sargento. I told this tale after the interment of Anthony Sargento. Both
Nicole and Larry wondered why both Capt. Starr and the leader of the
Marine funeral detail saluted William Bonnie. Capt Starr, William
Wallace, William Bonnie, and myself were in full uniform with medals and
ribbons. It was after the funeral and at Larry's place when I told this
tale.
I first met Anthony Sargento when I was on active duty. I was still at
Twenty Nine Palms. Anthony was a Lance Corporal reporting for duty. I
was filling in for Gunny Highway. The Gunny was on leave. Since my squad
was three men short, I put him in my squad. His file showed that he was
smart and good in his work. No major things against him. He did seem
driven. I said, "Relax L/Cpl Sargento and sit down. I am both your
assistant platoon sergeant and your squad leader. The Platoon Sergeant
will be back in four days. If you have any questions, please see me or
Gunny Highway. I was about to introduce you to the platoon leader, but
Lt. Van Skiver is coming over here in two minutes. There is five bunks
open. Two are next to this hut. Just put your baggage away and return
here for now."
Anthony was back very shortly. Just as he returned, Lt Van Skiver
entered.
She said, "At ease people. Scotty is this our new man?"
I said, "Yes he is Ma'am. I put him in my squad. I am doing double duty
since Sgt. Merwin went over seas. Cpl. Hunter is in third squad and is
the assistant squad leader. Can we make him the squad leader and put
L/Cpl. Martin in his old role?"
Lt. VanSkiver said, "Yes we can. I think Sue is almost ready for
advancement. But so is L/Cpl MacLeod. Who do you think is the most
ready?"
I had to say, "It is a tough call. The Gunny has better insight, but I
am in charge. Let's interview the both of them. After that we make the
call."
Lt VanSkiver asked, "What if there is still a tie?"
I just chuckled as I pulled out a 50 Peso coin. Then I said, "We will
just flip a coin. I know it is not the best way, but sometimes it
works."
Anthony was looking at me strange like until I said, "We do have two
fine people up for the same slot. Sometimes you have to make a call that
is a Catch 22. No matter what you do, someone you like gets hurt."
Lt. Van Skiver said, "Let's wait until the Gunny gets back. That way we
will have a tie breaker."
I went along with it. I was planning that anyway, but let the L T think
of it on her own. Well Anthony went to his bunk and began stowing away
his gear. His military gear was top notch, but that was normal. His
civilian gear was sparse but well cared for. A good suit, two pairs of
jeans, and two pair of office type pants. He also had two polo style
shirts, two short sleeve office shirts, and two logoed T shirts. He
would never enter any place real fancy, but could go most places he
wanted to. He had a sketch pad and colored pencils. I also noted there
was no family type photos. He may of had some in his wallet, so I didn't
think a thing about it.
Four days later, Gunny Highway came back and he liked the thought of a
mini board. He also chuckled about my trick with the 50 Peso coin. He
never let Lt. VanSkiver know that I was gently teaching her in her role.
Durning the mini board Gunny Highway had Anthony take notes. I also
noticed when Anthony was taking notes, he was doing quick sketches of
L/Cpl Mac Leod and L/Cpl Martin. I also noticed he made some sketches of
the area. They were good. I also noticed that some of the gals in the
platoon liked Anthony. He did make some sketchs of them and the sketchs
were very well styled and in good taste. When it came time for field
exercises, I would use Anthony to make sketchs of areas that we would
scout out to show where enemy could place troops or equipment.
Well L/Cpl MacLeod became Cpl. MacLeod. Cpl MacLeod thought L/Cpl Martin
should of got the job and Sue, was happy that Duncan got the job. Sgt.
Hunter said, "I best be on my toes.If Martin and MacLeod team up, they
can make the squad the best in the Corps."
Well just about every place has a bad egg or two. We had for a bad egg,
L/Cpl Richard Talamo. Now Talamo's record was not clean. However because
of an Uncle who was high placed in Military Intelligence, little to
nothing was done. I knew his Uncle and his Uncle knew me. Talamo if he
screwed up here, he would be dealt in a different mannor than he was
used to.
Now Talamo was in a different squad than Anthony, but would mess with
him any way. Anthony would fight back, but it was like a good
featherweight against a good heavyweight. The rest of the platoon would
protect Anthony. When I asked about that, L/Cpl Snyder said, "He dont
mess anyone and does his job. Talablow or I should say Talamo messes
with anyone who wont kick his ass. If you let us, we will introduce that
shithead to the HeadMonster."
I knew the term HeadMonster was another way of saying blanket party.
Unless Talamo was controlled, he would cause a major problem for the
platoon. I also knew that L/Cpl Snyder would throw Talamo in the nearest
dumpster or Lake Bandni.
Two weeks later, Anthony went home for his father's funeral. He was only
gone for four days. He told me, "I went for my mom. My dad and me never
really got along. I went to help out my mom."
I took him at his word. If he wanted to tell me something, he would on
his own terms. Snyder offered to buy him a few beers. So did the rest of
the squad. L/Cpl Snyder was a bit of a nut, but could fire the M 16 like
a pistol and the M 60 like a rifle. He also was the best demo man on the
base and could live off the land if need be.
A few days later a Commander Puzo came to the base. He was Talamo's
Uncle. Talamo was bugging him to let him join the Intel field. I knew
the answer was no but Commander Puzo set up a one question test on what
to do for a covert operation. Of the ones who took it, both L/Cpl's
Snyder and Sargento scored the highest. Talamo flunked. I saw the test
answers and I knew why. L/Cpl Snyder said, "I would not do it for I
would stick out like a sore thumb."
L/Cpl Saregento said, "He could if he could get in place and then get
out when the job was done with out notice."
Both Snyder and Sargento had similar plans on how to get an agent in and
out with little or no notice.
L/Cpl Talamo said, "I would just go in and cap him and head to the
embassy."
I knew that Snyder and Sargento wanted to use finesse and Talamo wanted
to use blunt force. In a covert op, finesse was better. After that day,
I was tasked by the 'Company' to check out Anthony. The ' Company '
wanted to recruit him.
I met Athony's mother and found out why Anthony's claim why he never got
along with his father. Leo Sargento (Anthony's father) loved his
daughters. Leo had on his desk photos of his daughters at their
gymnastics events and their dance recitals. I had to look in Anthony's
old room, tree fort, and his mother's sewing desk to find any awards for
Anthony. In Leo's desk there were letters from RIT, RPI, MIT, Cal Tech,
the U S Senate, and a four other schools for academic scholarships to
Anthony. Plus five colleges with athletic scholarships. The Senate was
offering Anthony a shot for the Naval Academy. There was even a Westing
House Scholarship waiting for Anthony. All that, Leo with held from
Anthony. I thought that was wrong, but promised Mrs.Sargento not to tell
Anthony with out her say so.
I got back to the base as was ready to file my report. I would say that
Anthony was acceptable. When I reported back, I found Anthony was in the
brig. L/Cpl Swenson was assaulted by two persons. Anthony was blamed and
the other was not known. Anthony was thought to be guilty because
Swenson kept calling out, "Tony. Tony."
L/Cpl Snyder told me, "Tony didn't do it. He was with me and half the
platoon at the Adobe Deli. We went there after the L. T., Martin, and
Henderson did well at the softball game. Talamo was on watch with his
buddy as a runner for the BC. His buddy is Moody in Weapons platoon.
Moody dont know shit from shinola."
I said, "Sounds good. But how did you hurt your hands? They are all
bruised."
Snyder smiled as he said, "The Sons of None tried to crash the party.
The Deli owner told them to leave. They refused. I sent them to the D
and S Ranch house. The Bartender there also tossed them."
Snyder's story held up.
Well Anthony was cleared and happy to be out of the brig. Talamo however
was never charged. His uncle pulled a string or two. Moody was sent to
the 'Company's ' training house for their training. Moody could do well,
but never last long in the field. Snyder was right on one thing. Moody
didn't know shit from shinola.
The next day, Talamo had Anthony in a head lock. Snyder just picked up
Talamo by his belt and body slammed Talamo into the nearest wall. I saw
Snyder take a move that meant that Talamo would lose his life unless he
did exactly what Snyder told him to do. I said, "Snyder go and get
Sargento to wash up. Then see me in the hut. Talamo. In the hut now."
Talamo went in the Platoon leader's office. (Also know as the hut.) He
said, "But Sarge, Snyder tried to kill me. My Uncle will take care of
him fast. So fast that ink will still wet on the paperwork when Snyder
lands in Leavenworth."
I had to hold in my laughter. Then I said, "Talamo, your uncle don't
mean shit to Snyder. Snyder is also up for some major fast tracking in
the Corps. The Intel people also want him. He has better field skills
than you and would toss you in Lake Bandni and make it look like you
went swimming drunk when you were fished out."
I heard a banging on the door. Then heard Snyder say, "L/Cpl. Snyder
reporting as ordered."
I said, "Enter." Right after Snyder came in, I asked, "Why did you have
Talamo in that hold?"
Snyder said, "Sarge it is easy. Tony is like my kid brother. Always
being fucked with in school by jerks like Talamo. The only reason I
didn't go to college was I would take the jerks head on and fast. My
brother is now at RIT and has an internship at a good firm. My old
principal told me to join the Corps to learn something new. That was
best thing I ever heard from him and joined right after I graduated."
I sent both Snyder and Talamo back to the squad bay. Just then Gunny
Highway came in. I filled him in. Gunny Highway smiled and said, "So
Talamo likes to mess with people. He can do that by doing 30 days of
mess duty. Snyder can pull for the next 30 days on double fire watch on
Mondays thru Fridays. Graveyard watch on weekends and holidays. Make
sure he is the one who wakes up Talamo. Now find Sargento. The BC needs
to see him and you for something."
The BC only wanted Anthony to sketch out the main parade ground to see
how it could look like for the Marine Corps Birthday. The BC was tasked
by the Base's Commanding General to plan the event. The whole thing was
to be taped for TV. The BC was making sure that no screw ups could
happen. With the sketchs and a sand table, the BC could plan the whole
show. I was there to keep Anthony from sketching the wrong areas.
That deal lasted for 30 days. The BC had his show planned and was ready
for the day. Snyder had plans for Talamo. All I knew was what Snyder
told me He said, "Talamo wont worm his way out my plan of justice. Even
his uncle will not be able to help him."
I decided to wait to find out what was up. All Snyder was doing was at
liberty call was to hop in his car and drive off base for about four
hours and return. Sometimes he would return with a package. Also he
would have a sneaky grin on his face. I knew that Talamo in for
something big. In three weeks it would be the Marine Corps Birthday.
It was now the Marine Corps Birthday. It was also a Friday. The enlisted
ball was canceled. A Naval Air Squadron while training hit the E Club by
mistake. It was hit with tear gas. The kitchen was damaged and the food
was ruined. It would take two weeks for the club to get back to normal.
I walked into the Day room and asked, "Where is Snyder and Talamo?"
Sgt Hunter said, "Snyder, Swenson, Doc, and Henderson went on a beer and
pizza run and will back by 2100. Talamo was out of here before Snyder
walked into the Squadbay."
I said, "The Gunny has the Staff Duty tonight and the LT is the OD. I
wonder what is really up? It dont take four and a half hours to get beer
and pizza."
At 20 30 Snyder, Doc, Swenson, and Henderson walked in. Snyder quickly
set four saw horses and two plywood boards and made two serving tables.
Swenson and Henderson covered the tables with plastic table cloths and
placed the pizza, paper plates, napkins, cups, a birthday cake, and
plastic flatware an the tables. Doc wheeled in a trashcan full of ice
and soda. Snyder came in with keg of beer on ice in a trashcan. Snyder
said, "The party at the club is off, but I set this one up for us. The
birthday cake took the longest to get here. I didn't want to break it.
Attention on Deck!"
The Gunny and the L T walked in.
The Gunny said, "Lets see that cake. I heard everything else."
Snyder removed the cloth covering the cake. The L T said, "Oh my god. It
is wonderful. Before it is cut, someone get a photo of it."
The cake had a thick rectangle base and round center piece to it. The
center piece was the Marine Corps Emblem. The base was bordered with
red and yellow roses and in the open space over white icing it had two
dates on it. On the left was 10 November 1775. On the right was today's
date.
The Gunny asked, "Where is Talamo?"
Doc said, "In Palm Springs. He is at the Hotel Vista Mirage. He must be
staying with his uncle."
Just then Talamo stormed into the squadbay. He screamed, "Sargento, I
will get you if it is the last thing I do."
I could see why Talamo was upset.He was dressed like a WM in a Dress
Blue Uniform. I could see Snyder and Doc barely holding in their
laughter. Talamo tried to grab Anthony and Snyder locked up Talamo.
Snyder said, "Shut up Rikkie. Tony is clear of this. Fuck with him and I
will fuck with you and your dumb uncle and buddy."
The Gunny asked, "Vista Mirage? Is that the place where the command
staff has planned their ball?"
I said, "Yes," as I was hearing cries of Snyder to watch out for
'Rikkie' wants to kiss you.
Then I heard The LT yell out, "Attention on deck!"
The whole squadbay was quiet as the Commanding General, the BC, four MP
's and two members of the CHP come in. The Base General asked, "What in
the fuck is going on here?"
Doc said, "We noticed that E Club could not host it's Birthday Ball. We
choose to make do with pizza, beer, and soda. The cake was a last minute
bit of fun."
The General looked at the cake. He said, "Good going for the last
minute. That can work great for most field units. Who set it up?"
Snyder said, "I did sir. We were just about to cut it when all you
walked in. I know the youngest members here. Both Pvt Stern and Pvt
Ruger. The eldest is now in question. It was Gunny Highway, but the BC
and you also have that honor sir."
The BC said, "Well the General is a year older than me. How do we cut
the cake?"
Doc said, "Here is a knife that we borrowed from the mess hall. It is
meant for jobs like this."
Snyder came back with a Kantana. He said, "For any ceremony or rite,
here is the proper tool. I picked it up in Okinawa."
The General said as he pointed to Talamo " Have this thing, get into
normal male clothing. Now after any photos and sketchs are made of the
cake, let us have the birthday rites of the Marine Corps."
After that, the General cut two slices of the cake with the sword and
gave one each to Stern and Ruger. Then he gave the mess hall knife to LT
Van Skiver. " Please serve the rest and save me the center piece."
The LT said, "Yes sir."
As the General returned the sword to Snyder, Snyder gave the General a
card from the baker. The General said, "Good going Cpl. Snyder. I heard
about Talamo too much, You did it right and with some humor. Nothing
will be said of this unless anyone wants to do guard duty on the moon. "
Snyder said after the General left, "Swenson and Henderson picked up the
food and drink in my truck. I pulled a version of the Yucca Woman. When
I booked the room, I used Talamo's ID. I paid cash and the clerk didn't
say a thing. Doc knocked out and drove Talamo in Talamo's car to the
hotel. In the hotel Doc and me washed, shaved, and dressed Talamo as a
WM. I didn't change his ID and left him his keys to his car so he could
return. I booked him in a room of his own, but left him in the BC 's
room. Talamo had to make his way past all the brass as Rikkie to his
car. If all Talamo gets is brig time, then it is worth it. All his gear
is here."
Talamo did get a Bad Conduct Discharge. He turned out to be a rapist and
a pedophile. He went after Anthony after Talamo got out of Leavenworth.
That brings us to now.
Talamo had his buddy Moody put Anthony in jail. Between Snyder and I,
Anthony was all set to be let go with a clear record. Moody also set up
for Anthony and Talamo for their last meeting. Talamo's face and neck
had fang and claw marks on them.
I saw Larry's face go pale. It looked like he was getting PSTS attack.
Helga, Larry's wife said, "Scotty is that why we got this tube addressed
to you sent here?"
I opened the tube. I said, "It is from Sgt Major Snyder. He wrote me a
note and sent a copy of the New Orleans Times Picayune. The note said
the circle is now complete. Commander Puzzo died in a Military Mental
Health Care Facility and Moody in New Orleans after eating bad Seafood
Gumbo during Mardi Gras. The Gumbo was laced with oyster and lobster.
Moody was allergic to shellfish. The lobster and oyster was full of the
Red Tide. Snyder added in French, Let the Good Times Roll."
I put the paper and the note back in the tube. Then I tossed it in the
fireplace.
Barry asked, "What was the deal with Belle and the Officer in charge of
the funeral detail saluting Billy? Billy was only a Chief in the Navy?"
Belle said, "That is easy. Billy won the Congressional Medal of Honor."
Billy asked, "Is steaks on the grill OK?"
Larry said, "Yes they are. I will give you a hand. Nikkie please tell me
how the steaks need to be done."
Billy said, "Easy Ziller. Larry just got a big shock. Larry start the
grill and the salt potatoes. I can get the rest."
I then saw Capt. Starr, Billy and Nicole letting Larry talk as the
cooking was being done. I didn't ask. I was getting dirty looks from
Larry's pet. Gunny Bill said, "Down boys. Scotty didn't know on Larry's
past. He does care about Larry."
I know this tale is at its end.
