Scott's Yucca Man Tale
I was just getting in from taking Connie back to Prince Eric. I had
returned Connie back to her original form with Prince Eric's promise
that he would send regular reports on the Count's behavior. I went to
the Irish to get a beer or two along with a meal. I also wanted to
catch up on local events and the Baseball scores. I was on the weekly
board. I was sad to see that the Yankee's had dropped too many games.
Oh well, the season is still young.
When I walked in to the bar, I saw Larry, Henry, Bobbie, Barry, Scott,
and Bill sitting at a table laughing. I went over and sat down after
ordering two pitchers. Bill had already come from the kitchen with two
large pizzas.
I asked, "Scotty, what are you doing here?"
Scott answered, "I was on my way home from Washington DC, when my car
went off the road. It will be in the shop for a week and a half. Nicole
asked me to stay with her for a while. I took her up on her offer. That
old trawler she bought is about ready sea trials. The hull is fully
sealed and the engines are tuned up and in full working order. All she
needs to do is put the cabin back on and install all the Navigation,
Communication, and any fish finders she might want. Then paint it and
give it a name that fits the boat. She was thinking of calling it the
DragNet. I told her don't be too cliche."
About that time a cheer arose from the crowd. The TV News just reported
that Jane Fonda was spit on by a Vietnam Vet. The hat was passed to
raise a defense fund for the spitter. Some of the Nam Vets in the crowd
wanted to piss on her. Wild Bill to this day will support any team that
plays against the Atlanta Braves. In his office is a dartboard with
Jane Fonda's face on it. He gives copies of it to the VFW and the
American Legion.
I asked Larry, "Where is Helga? Is she on a call?"
Larry said, "No, she is helping Nicole turn Howie into a stay at home
wife. Howie and Nicole had a fight about that. Now Nicole is making
Howie learn what a housewife really does all day besides eat Bonbons
and watch the soaps."
Scott said, "This reminds of a time when I was at The Stumps. That is
Twenty Nine Palms California. Out there, there is a local base joke is
about a Marine getting lost in the Mojave Desert and somehow is turned
into a Human Yucca Plant. Part of the joke includes the Yucca Man will
get you. It is used to poke fun at the new people. I turned it back on
one joker and made him a Yucca Woman."
I said, "Please tell us that tale Scott. It sounds like a good one."
Most of the rest of the story is being told by Scott.
Scott opened with I just made Buck Sergeant and was on my way to report
in to the base after returning Stateside. I was in my civvies driving a
full ton pickup, and ran into two young women, who looked about the
same age. They were on their way to the base as well. I saw the car
they were in had broken down.
I asked them, "What is wrong Ladies?"
The first one said, "Hey we are girls! How should we know how to fix a
car?!"
I said, "Well back home my mom can fix the tractor and the car. She
also teaches at a nearby college. Plus maintains a home. She is also a
Lady."
The first one said, "My name is Sue. My travel partner is Mary Lu."
I said, "Hello there. I will take a look under the hood."
After one minute of looking I found the problem. I said, "Here is the
problem. Your radiator has a hole in it. I can seal the hole, but I
will need to get some coolant and water. You should replace that
radiator. It is very worn."
Mary Lu said, "This car is about as old as the hills. I really should
replace it outright. Say what is under that tarp?"
I said, "Oh that is my tools, personal gear, and a Harley Davidson
Motorcycle. I can tow you to town and get the coolant and water."
In about five minutes we were on our way. I found out we were to report
to the same unit. I went straight to the base. On base I sealed the
hole with an old cartridge case and solder. I added the coolant and
water and started the engine. It ran well and the radiator stayed
sealed. After the engine cooled I added more coolant and water. I found
out that Sue was Private First Class Sue Martin. Mary Lu was Second
Lieutenant Mary Lu VanSkiver.
Sue answered my unspoken question. She said, "We went high school
together. She went to college and I went to a trade school. I lost my
job when my boss went bankrupt. You found this building mighty fast.
Have you been here before?"
I said, "Yes I was. Three times. (In truth five times. Only three that
I am allowed to admit to.) Maam, you car is fixed and will run until
you can get a better one."
Mary Lu said, "Please don't be so formal. It is so embarrassing."
"It maybe Maam, but this is the U S Marines and not high school. You
are young and new to the Corps. You will quickly find that is safer to
be more formal and not relaxed when dealing with your troops. But I am
glad that you want to find a healthy mixture of both. The best leaders
are that way and their troops will do anything for them." said I.
After I reported in to the base I found I was to be in the same platoon
as both Sue and Mary Lu. Sue was not in my squad, but under a real jerk
of a Sergeant, Sgt. Jason Merwin. Sgt. Merwin was the type of Sergeant
who Hollywood would use to play the Thug Soldier. I could help Sue, but
only to a point. I had my own squad to deal with, and I did not want to
get into a inter platoon war. The battalion commander wanted me to aid
Lt. VanSkiver in becoming a troop leader. Sgt. Merwin was the senior
Sergeant, but the B.C. liked my record better. So he made me the first
squad leader and assistant platoon leader. The platoon Sergeant also
liked my record. Gunny Highway and I did some time together overseas.
He also shared my views about Sgt. Merwin. There was little we could do
to help Sue without causing more problems.
Lt. VanSkiver asked, "Sgt. Scott. Could I put her under you or another
squad leader?"
I said, "Yes you can. However since Sgt. Merwin has not broken any
rules, you would make things harder on PFC Martin. It might look like
PFC Martin could not adapt to the military and she would be discharged.
Also you would look like you are playing favorites with an old and dear
friend."
Lt. VanSkiver asked, "Is it that bad?"
Gunny Highway said, "Yes it is. However Sgt. Scott or myself can give a
few tips in our roles without stepping on toes. And if Sgt. Merwin has
a problem with that, he can be handled with ease."
The next week the platoon had an inspection. Sue needed to get her
uniform from the cleaners. She checked with Gunny Highway and he
allowed her go. She borrowed my truck and was back within an hour.
She told me, "Your gas tank was low, so I put $5.00 worth in the tank
and it barley moved the needle."
I said, "Thank you for the gas. I also have twin tanks on my truck."
Sgt. Merwin came in and bellowed at Sue. "Martin! Where were you and
why are talking to him when you should be getting your gear ready for
tomorrow."
I said, "PFC Martin, get back to your squad and I will deal this.
Merwin, you may be her squad leader. However she checked with Gunny
Highway was allowed to leave. She borrowed my truck and put some gas in
it when she did not need to. In case you forgot, I am over you."
Then I heard "Scott and Merwin in my hut now!" said Gunny Highway.
We went in to his office and he said, "The last thing I need is my
squad leaders fighting each other. Merwin, Sgt. Scott is correct about
everything he said. You should take some tips from Sgt. Scott here."
Just then the phone rang. It was for me. I said, "Excuse me Gunny, but
I am needed at battalion HQ. It is one of those jobs again."
Gunny Highway told me, "To get in and out with no fucking about. When
you get back, we will talk about it over some Jim Bean."
I was gone for two weeks. What I did then you may never know.
When I got back, the platoon had passed with honors. Sue despite
getting high marks was put on weekend fire watch for two months at the
graveyard shift. Sgt. Merwin was a sore loser. I was already looking
into a way to prank on Sgt. Merwin with style and not get in trouble.
Today you could find that stuff on the internet. Then you had to do it
by hand.
Well in three weeks we went on maneuvers. Sgt. Merwin did two dumb
things. First he tried to jump me. All he got was to be tossed into
Lake Bandni. (Any one who has been to 29 Palms knows what Lake Bandini
is.)
The other was to tell the yarn about the Yucca Man. He had most of the
new people in awe. The ones in my squad looked at me and got the sign
it was all boloney.
Well the first night in the field was nuts. I had to get up and go to
the bathroom. I heard Sue scream. I wondered what was wrong. So when
Sue ran into me I had her sit down.
She was saying, "I saw the Yucca Man and he wants me."
I told her, "PFC Martin. The Yucca Man story is just that. A story."
I heard a nasty giggle. Sgt. Merwin was saying, "Do you see how she
ran? Wow, that was great."
I said, "Sgt. Merwin. A bit of your time please."
We went behind the trucks and I said, "I heard you giggle. There is a
fine line of a good joke and plain mean. As an NCO and squad leader,
you should act a little better. You should know better."
Sgt. Merwin said, "I can still write her up for leaving her post
without relief."
I said back at him, "Yes you can. However, I and others can tell about
your tale of the Yucca Man. I will also speak of your actions. I can
find the other watches on right now and get their testimony. The Gunny
and the LT will judge things for themselves."
Just then, Sgt. Merwin tried to tackle me again. I picked him up and
said, "Time for another swimming lesson." Then threw him into Lake
Bandini again.
Well Gunny Highway and Lt. VanSkiver came over and wanted to know went
on. We both gave our stories. Then Gunny Highway said, "Merwin you are
lucky. The incident is closed as of right yesterday. Scott if you did
not toss him at least halfway across Bandini, you will be on report."
I heard the Gunny and the LT talking. Lt. VanSkiver said, "Gunny
Highway. Why did you not charge any of them?"
Gunny Highway said, "Merwin pulled a dumb joke that backfired. Scott
used his head and acted proper. Merwin was even dumber when tried to
fight Scott. Scott could have killed him five times without Merwin
hitting the ground. Scott also works for the 'Company'. Scott is a man
you don't want mad against you. He is that good."
Lt. VanSkiver asked, "What do you think Scott is up to now?"
Gunny Highway said, "A very good prank on Merwin. One that is approbate
for Merwin's actions."
Gunny Highway had me dead to rights on that one. He also felt along the
same lines as I. He did not know what I would do. All I was doing was
looking at Yucca plants.
Well after we came out of the field, I went to Palm Springs. I had to
do some shopping. I stopped at a professional costume shop and a
lingerie shop. I was told my orders would be ready in two weeks. I
asked for them to be shipped to me at the base. I paid for them up
front in cash. I also went to the base uniform shop. Merwin was in for
a big surprise.
Five weeks later it was the 4th of July weekend. For us on base it
meant 4 days off in a row. Sue was stuck on graveyard fire watch. That
did not matter. The second day Gunny Highway had the Staff Duty and Lt.
VanSkiver had Officer of the Day. Sgt. Merwin was the Duty NCO. I had
the whole weekend free. Perfect.
The first day of the weekend I was drinking tequila and beer. I invited
Sgt. Merwin over and he accepted. He even offered some single malt
scotch. He did have some good taste. After the third drink, I spiked
his glass. He was out like a light. I stripped and washed him. Then
shaved and naired him. Then I really went to work. I put a gaff on him
and breast forms. I glued them to him. Using theatrical make up, I was
able to match them to his body tone. Next I put a bra, panties, and a
camisole on him. After that a corset. Merwin was starting to look like
a woman.
Next I put him a Class C Marine's Uniform. (Woman's) I even left his
medals that he earned. None of them were from combat. I also included
stockings and footwear. I next glued a chin length wig that matched the
color of a Yucca plant. In the wig I put some Yucca flowers. Over that,
I put a Woman's cover (hat to all you non-marines) on his head. His
men's clothing and I. D. went into a bag that was locked up in a safe
location. In his locker went female uniforms and undergarments. I even
added some civilian clothing. In his wallet an I.D. card in his new
persona. I put that in a handbag that was allowed for WM's Merwin woke
up and found out he was to report to the duty hut. He tried to put it
off.
I said, "Janice Merwin. Report now or face charges."
Gunny Highway and Lt. VanSkiver came in also thought along the same
lines. I heard the Gunny say, "Sgt. Janice Merwin. You are duty now.
Take your post. "
Lt VanSkiver said, "Janice take your post now."
Sgt. Merwin said, "I am Jason Merwin you dopes."
Gunny Highway said, "Take a closer look in the wash room mirror."
Sgt. Merwin did so and screamed. I showed him a note. The note said
this.
'You are to be my wife. I will change you into a human yucca plant like
me. A female yucca plant. I love you. In love. The Yucca Man. '
Merwin removed the cover to remove the wig. He could not remove the
wig. Then he saw the yucca flowers.
I said, "I can stop the change on one condition. That is you treat all
your squad members the same respect you want."
Sgt. Merwin said, "And if I don't."
I said, "You will remain as you are."
Sgt. Merwin said, "You win Scott."
I said, "I am glad you are starting to learn. However you will be stuck
like this for three more days. The antidote will not come in until
then."
The Gunny, The LT, and the BC all were laughing. The Gunny said, "I
told you LT, you don't want Scott mad at you."
No charges were filled by the BC. He liked an in house justice without
paperwork.
Back to the present.
Larry said, "Wow Scott. You are sneaky guy."
Scott said, "Yes I can be when I have to."
Wild Bill said, "That was fun and a good tale. Helen you will start
tomorrow at 9 o'clock. Be there on time."
Barry asked, "Why didn't you become an officer?"
Scott said, "That is another tale for another time. Let us have another
round on me."
Howie was on time. I had to laugh. Nicole was getting a good man to be
her husband.
That is too, another tale to be told later. For now. Peace. Belle
