"It's not a good photo."
I look up from my crossword at my mother; she's hunched over a pile of
magazines that cover our kitchen table. "Which one?" I ask; not really
caring. Mom holds up some Chinese tabloid. The cover has a photo of me.
It is indeed very ugly. How strange that in a world where I have a
thousand photos of me taken every day they would decide to put a bad one
on the cover of a magazine. Who cares I guess; it's not like I can even
read Chinese.
Mother holds the magazine up for the young woman standing by the window
to see. "Well," she says, "What do you think?" The woman doesn't
answer, but it's obvious that her opinion's no different than my mothers.
With that mom tosses it into the trash and moves onto the next magazine.
Sometimes I wonder why she even bothers to read that trash. I mean mom
lives with me, so it's not like she needs to read about me in the paper,
right? Honestly she's a total loon.
Maybe it's not her fault though. We spend so many hours a day trapped in
our house that there's pretty much nothing better to do. Sure the place
used to be fun to explore. We'd play pool down in the hall, watch the
collections of movies, swim in the Olympic sized pool, and even jump
around on the beds. When you live in a house that has an extra seven
bedrooms that you're never going to use you might as well put them to
some sort of use I guess. However all of that's become so terribly
boring. These days I dream of nothing more than going outside. I miss
when mother and I could spend an evening at the mall together. To be
honest mom has wonderful taste in clothes. She always found the most
beautiful things for me to wear. That all seems like so long ago.
"I want to go outside, right now!" My voice is unintentionally loud.
Every eye in the room is suddenly on me; I feel like I've committed a
crime.
The woman by the window shakes her head at me. "I'm sorry," she lies,
"You can't leave the house." Her partner, another woman who had been
standing near mother, nods in agreement. Mom seems to petrified to
speak.
Again I declare my intentions. "I want to go outside, and if it doesn't
happen I might hurt myself."
The mood in the room changes. The woman by mother takes out her phone to
call someone; probably someone important. The other woman walks to the
door to tell the women in the hall that I'm up to no good. Mother's
giggling. She loves it when I get like this. A second later three women
barge into the room. One of them is my government appointed babysitter,
Ayla. Before she can speak I stand up and make myself clear. "We're
going outside," I say with force, "right now." To show my seriousness I
clamp my tongue between my teeth.
Ayla's a monstrous woman; bigger than anyone else who ever stops by. She
frightens me, but I'd never admit that out loud. She raises her fist to
me as if threatening me. Such a vein action; she can't touch me.
"You're not going outside, so stick your tongue back in your mouth!" Her
voice booms like a man's.
Pain, I guess I should have known bitting into my tongue would hurt.
Everyone in the room suddenly looks panic stricken. I taste warm blood.
Even mother now seems concerned. Ayla clenches her teeth. She
absolutely hates me; she's told me so. The woman's such a dyke. "Fine,"
she stammers out, "We'll see about getting you out for an hour or two."
With that she stomps out of the room. Even a minute later I can still
hear her loud pounding feet marching through my house.
Honestly I hadn't expected her to give in. Quickly I run to my bedroom,
and dive into my closet. What will I wear? My first choice is a red
Asian dress I received as a gift from a fan, but that's too formal.
Today I'm going to be sexy. I can just imagine how excited mom will be
to see photos of me looking like an absolute tramp in the paper. This is
the most fun I've had in a year.
When I step out of my home I see them for the first time in so long; a
crowd of women at the gates of my property. They scream and cheer;
