Mike gets revenge on his father. Dr Busch and I work together on this
case with some help from Larry.
Mike Brown was just a young boy. Barely 16 and he had lived a life that
was pure misery. He was the oldest of three children, but the most
mistreated. His two sisters, Amy and Beth were each treated like a
princess by their father. Their father was called James Donavon.
The girls slept in bedrooms that were had every kids dream as far as
stuff and luxury.
Mike slept in an oversized storage closet that had no windows or lights.
There was a power outlet but no light. Mike's bed was an oversized dog
bed and a simple and thin blanket.
Mike could not complain. If he did, he was beaten by James.
Their mother, Laura died four years earlier. When she was alive, she did
try to help Mike as much as she could. James was just as hard on her as
he was Mike.
Laura did let Mike to build a tree house and keep a cat as a pet. The
cat was a first class mouser. But when James found out about it, he beat
Mike and Lara. Then James broke the cat's neck. The tree house was
turned into bonfire wood.
A year later, James allowed the girls a puppy. He made Mike take care of
it. The dog was fed better than Mike in both amount and quality of food.
James later killed the dog because the dog liked Mike more than the
girls. The dog even stood up to James once to protect Mike from James.
James simply shot the dog and threw it in the woods. While the girls
were not upset, Mike was.
After Laura died, Mike became almost a slave to his father. Mike did all
the cooking, cleaning, and other household work. His sisters got to
watch TV and do anything they wanted to do. Mike was beaten by James for
the smallest reason.
The only things that Mike called his own was a low wattage desk lamp, a
simple alarm clock, and an AM/FM radio. He was able to hide the radio
from James.
When it came to school, Mike somehow aced all his classes and was a
model student. Well except for Phys Ed were he just got buy and only
took the required classes. His sisters were dumb as fence posts and
acted up. They never showed up for Phys Ed and would sass the coaches.
Mike was beaten ed for the girl's actions and James told the school that
the child was disciplined for the misconduct.
One late night, Mike heard an ad on his radio. To keep James from
hearing the radio, Mike used earphones and Mike still kept the volume
low. The ad was from Girls R US. Mike was about to turn it off when
heard the claim of "Most of your problem cases can be solved. We turn
them or you into the girl of your dreams."
Mike heard the address and made plans to get there as soon as he could.
He wrote a note to his sisters. It said, "Fix your own breakfast today.
If you can't pour Corn Flakes in a bowl and put milk on them or put
peanut butter on bread with jelly, then go hunger. If you cant put water
in a glass, then go thirsty. When I get back, if I do, you will start
learning how to take care of the house. Fuck you and your Fucked up
father."
Fourteen hours later I took a call from Dr.Busch. She agreed to meet me
at the Wellman Clinic.
She had brought Mike with her. With me was both Larry and Nicole
Sargento. Larry and Nicole are brother and sister. Nicole's fianc'e
Billy Bonnie was working at the local brewery. Aggie said, "Belle thank
you for seeing me on such short notice. I know your time is busy."
I thought abit. Then I said, "Larry and Nicole. Please take young Mike
here to the cafeteria. I know the food cannot even make a Marine
Messhall look good, but Mike looks like he could stand a few weeks worth
of meals. If the staff give you any crap, tell them to call me."
Larry jokingly said, "I wish you gave me a heads up Belle. I would of
brought in a half pan of Nicole's Lasagna and some Garlic Bread. Just
thinking about it makes anyone gain at least ten pounds."
Nicole just went along with it by saying, "Larry knock it off. It is
your turn to cook tonight and you always under cook the steaks."
Larry came back with, "If it don't moo when you cut it, it is over
done."
Mike was in wonderment when I told him, "Larry and Nicole are brother
and sister. Nicole is using a section of Larry's house for her use. They
like having meals together and to bust each other's chops. Both are good
cooks, but Larry is better with steaks and roasts. Nicole is better with
pasta and soups."
As they left, Larry sent me a message by way of American Sign Language
that they were going to call Hogan's Deli for some Heroes and Lasagna
soup. I sent to him to add two of my favorite Deli style sandwich with
some coleslaw and potato chips. Plus two quarts of that soup.
Aggie waited until after they left to say, "Mike came to me late last
night. He flat out begged me to make him a girl. After a short
interview, I felt your staff could help him better than mine could. I
put him in a staff bed. I let him sleep and then brought him here for
the help he needs."
I was at a lost for words. Then I asked, "Why can't you help him and why
do you think the Wellman Clinic can?"
Aggie took a deep breath and said, "Well for one, Mike does not really
want to be a girl. He does not think of himself as a girl in a boy's
body. Two, he is a minor and I must get his parent's or guardian's
consent."
I was now real deep in thought. Then after rubbing both my eyes and
temples, I said, "Please have your staff send my staff your notes about
Mike. I know that there must be more to this than you can tell me
without Mike's permission."
Aggie said with complete calm, "You are right Belle. I can say that Mike
needs for his father to be taken out back of the woodshed for a good old
fashioned but kicking."
I just heard my phone ring. I put it on speakerphone mode. It was
Larry. He said in very even tones, "Belle, I have called Heidi and Dr.
Twain. Mike slipped and his shirt was torn. (Heidi is a lawyer.) From
the bruises and black and blue marks on his back, I would say he was a
human punching bag. Give me one round in the gym with the puncher and we
will see how well he does with someone that can hit back."
I just saw Aggie smile and I knew she would like to see that action.
I had to say, "Larry you just made Dr. Busch smile. That is no small
feat. What else is there that I need to know?"
Larry said, "I am placing Mike here at the Wellman on my call. I will
have Heidi put Mike in foster care until Mike turns eighteen. From what
I could pick up from Mike was, that he was beat upon by his father for
the smallest reason and for actions that he didnot do. So was his
mother. We need his father to come here or to a court to explain why. I
need you to get all Mike's files from school and other places to show
Heidi why I think Mike needs foster care. Also to show the law why I am
taking these actions."
Just after I was about to respond, my niece Bobbie came in. She said,
"Hi Aunt Belle. I just received a report of a missing child. Andy is
ready to issue an Amber Alert. Here is the file on the case that I can
give you before this hits the press."
I said, "Larry just make sure Mike is OK. (The file was about Mike.)
Bobbie, tell Andy that no Amber Alert is needed. Mike is here and
getting some medical help. I regret saying this, but to have Andy tell
the next of kin the same news. Bobbie, stay here until Mr. Donavan
arrives. You may make your determination then. Larry has called his
sister in law Heidi Hessman to act for Mike."
Bobbie called Major Jackson. Bobbie filled in Major Jackson on all the
details. Then our food order came. While we ate lunch, we just chatted
about the case in general. Bobbie called down to cafeteria for a salad
and some lemonade. Just as Bobbie's lunch came to my office, James
Donavon stormed into my office demanding, "Where is that ungrateful
whelp? Where is he?"
Aggie asked, "Where is who?"
James: "Mike Donavon."
I asked, " Just who are you to come storming into my office? You have
may of interrupted a session with a client. Now calm down or the law
will take you to jail."
James said, "Fuck you Bitch."
Bobbie said, "I am a Lieutenant on the Salem County Sheriff's
Department. Now calm down or I can move you myself."
James said, "Now how can you do that Bitch. " Then he threw a punch at
Bobbie. Bobbie ducked the punch and grabbed James by his arm. James was
down for the count and screaming 'Uncle'.
Bobbie said, "That is what you learn from having a bully for an older
brother. You can fight or run. You can see that I dont run."
I had to step in. I said, "Bobbie, please see Nicole and Larry. I want
you to confirm Larry's thoughts."
Bobbie left and shot James a look that meant he best find a good lawyer.
Jim Bridger just knocked politely before entering. He said, "Ms. Starr.
We have two smart mouthed teenaged girls waiting in the lobby. Beside
wanting to see their brother, they are bugging the staff and insulting
some of the newer clients. Jim Bowie is all for to give them each an old
style spanking. He is even willing for them to cut their own switch."
I turned on the monitors, then I said, "No spankings today. Instead the
barn needs mucking out. I think we have our cleaning crew."
Jim said, "I will inform Mr. Bowie and let him take charge. He did grow
up on a dairy farm so he will know what needs to done."
James shouted, "I can see who is in the lobby ! They are my daughters !
You can't make them clean out a barn!"
I smiled as I said, "Well I just did. This is a place of healing. Some
of our clients have unique needs. We require all visitors respect our
clients and their needs. Your daughters have broken our rules of
conduct. They can clean the barn or they can be sent to Juvie Hall."
James said, "Well they might be high spirited at times. A little hard
work will teach them to respect others, yet still give a shot at a good
life."
I said, "You are beginning to learn Jane."
Before James could even complain about being addressed in the feminine
format, in walked Heidi Hessman and Sam Houston. Sam was the head of the
local Child Welfare Service. I knew why both were here. Sam said, "I am
sorry Maam. I was called here on short notice. I wanted to bring some
doughnuts. I just hope for Mr. Sargento's sake, his thoughts have some
basis. I don't like to take a child from his or her parents without a
good reason."
Aggie said with full authority, "I saw what Mr. Sargento saw on young
Mike Donavon's body. I can give medical testimony to that fact."
Heidi asked me, "Belle, can you or the Wellman Clinic's staff back
Larry's claim?"
I had to say truthfully, "I cannot say at this time. When I receive the
reports of the staff here and look at Dr. Busch's notes, I can. I think
that may help Mr. Houston do his job in the best way."
Nicole came in a few minutes later. She had a new shirt on. She said,
"Hi Heidi. Hi Sam. Belle this has saved me a trip. With Sam and Heidi
being here. Since Mike's shirt was torn, I gave him the one I was
wearing. I borrowed one of Larry's Salem State's Hockey shirts. I am
asking Heidi to let me keep Mike as a ward until he turns eighteen. I
called Billy. He is willing to do so as well. He even said that if
Father Murphy cannot wed us, he will get his old C. O. to take us out to
sea on my boat and wed us there. Then give us a proper Church Service
for us when we can."
Aggie did say, "Mr. Houston must place three minors in foster care. Mike
I am not worried about. If Nicole cannot get Mike, then I know of Belle
or Bobbie can. His sisters are another story. So is James. I will make
James see the error of his ways. Sam you must find homes for Amy and
Beth. James or I should say Jane will be in my care. Yes I can make an
adult male into a minor female. I only do it for extreme cases. This is
one of them."
I said, "Aggie do your job. Jane will learn the best that way."
James cried, "Who is Jane?"
Aggie looked at me as we both punched him and said, "You are Bitch!"
Aggie has a mean left hook and I have a good right hammer. Larry did
teach me a good follow through. It also allowed me to give a good elbow
on the return.
Sam did place both Amy and Beth in foster care. Sorry but that info is
off limits.Aggie took James into her care and made him Jane. Judge
Anthony ruled it that way. Judge Anthony liked Nicole and her thoughts,
but made me Mike's Guardian. She cited my age and experience with
Bobbie. Plus the fact I am married to William Wallace owner of the Ye
Old Irish Inn and founder of the Wellman Clinic.
Billy Bonnie with Larry taught Mike the fine art of fishing. Nicole told
me that Larry and Bill would just nap and catch the ball game and place
a line with no hook in the water. They would let Mike catch the fish.
Then at the Irish or the Game Room, praise Mike and dog each other on
who was better.
Paula Mc Carthy was hooked on Mike. I was not about to stop it. (Check
out or read American Maid.) Paula was now 14. I did keep an eye on it.
However the Luau at the Irish on the 4th of July was pure fun. Mike
wanted to help cook the food. Bill did have it down to an art, but let
Mike help out.
Mike is doing fine and his doctor will tell me of his progress.
Aggie tells me that James now Jane is having a hard time adapting to
being a 13 year old girl with the onset of puberty. She will say that
Jane has learned how to sew, cook, clean, and to be a good hostess.
