It was certainly innocent enough - I mean, I was just looking at their
costumes. You know, the standard black long sleeve leotard, ballet pink

"Your knees and toes are always facing the sides (outward). Your knees
should stay straight."
Grande Plie, Grande J?te, Tondue, Arabesque. I wonder how many other boys
even know these terms.
Those outfits are so cute. Tammy says her new leotard has a shelf bra, so
she doesn't have to wear her regular bra. I heard her talking with her
best friend, Connie. Of course I was listening through the wall. Boys
aren't allowed in her room. Connie had a sleepover, and I listened
through the wall as closely as possible. She wears cute little skirts,
usually floral. They were talking about all those girl things, you know.
Makeup, clothes, boys, and any other clues I could get on what it's like
to be a girl.
I didn't even see Ms. Johnson exit the building. She'd seen me peeking
in. I wanted so badly to be standing with them. Now Ms. Johnson is
pulling me into the room. I'm in trouble. I just know it.
Mother picks up Tammy at 4:00. She's always on time. Mother is very
precise when it comes to meetings and getting her daughter to class on
time. She doesn't seem to care about my being to baseball practice on
time, or playing any other sports, but Tammy is her girl, and needs that
extra attention. Now I'm stuck sitting in the ballet classroom with her.
How am I going to explain what I'm doing in the ballet classroom? God,
I'm stuck. Miss Johnson told me in front of all the girls that I'd have a
much better view inside the building. "Aren't those costumes just
adorable?" she said. Like she was reading my mind. She was talking to me,
but my mind was elsewhere. What is mother going to say? How can I explain
why I was looking in the window? I was supposed to be at baseball
practice, but I hate that game. Father wanted me to play baseball, Mother
always told me. He was so into the Yankees and Red Sox. I couldn't care
less about baseball.
"They'll be wearing floral wrap-around skirts for the recital, you know."
Miss Johnson was talking to me while watching the girls and their
movements.
"Position three now, girls."
"I was thinking of a yellow leotard for the recital, more springtime
colors, what do you think?"
She's asking me? Like how should I know? Five more minutes and Mother is
going to walk through that door. "Yes, yellow is a springtime color, and
I'm sure the girls would look pretty in yellow," I said, just making
small talk. I know the girls were listening. I'm telling Miss Johnson
that I think that yellow leotards are a good choice because they're a
springtime color. And yes, the girls will look pretty in yellow. I wonder
what colors the wrap-around skirts are going to be. What am I thinking
about that for when I've got to come up with an excuse as to why I was
looking at the ballerinas in Miss Johnson's dance school window?
Tammy is angry and embarrassed, I can tell. She's giving me dirty looks
and told me she'd take care of me when we got home. As if I were going to
live long enough. Mother is going to be furious. I don't know how she's
going to punish me this time. Last time I embarrassed her; she chose to
embarrass me in public. I had a little accident and wet my pants. I know,
I'm old enough not to make that kind of mistake, but Mother could see the
wet stains on the front of my pants. She dragged me into the local mall,
straight to the babies' section, and bought the diapers and rubber pants
that "babies" need as to not wet themselves in public. She made it quite
clear to all that were within earshot that maybe next time, I'd be a
little more careful about wetting myself and diapers seemed appropriate
for the situation. And I'd better not complain or I'd have a pacifier
shoved in so fast, my head would spin.
"Time to get your skirts and sweaters on, girls. You've all done a
wonderful practice today!"
I see mother's car pull up to the front of the building. My breathing has
increased; my heart is pounding wildly. What am I going to say? How will
she publicly embarrass me today? The girls walk to their ballet bags at
the side of the room. Tammy and Connie are whispering and giggling. Their
round, little bottoms wiggling purposely at me as they bend over to pick
up their bags. They notice that I'm staring. Mother is getting out of her
car; She's walking quickly to the door, looking in the window, for her
precious ballet dancer "Tammy". Miss Johnson is still talking to me about
the wrap around skirt, something about a light floral print, probably in
pink. She's asking me if I think pink floral would look good on a yellow
? sleeve, mother is opening the door. Damn it, I can't think - Why is she
asking me about pink on yellow? Mother sees me, and her smile quickly
drops from her face. Miss Johnson is telling me that she can get a really
good deal on yellow tights. I've never even seen yellow tights, and
Mother has increased her step, directly toward us!
"What has He done now?"
"Oh," Miss Johnson says, "We were just discussing the color of the
recital costumes."
"Tammy told me Jamie is a genius when it comes to color matching and
design."
"We were talking about a yellow long sleeve leotard, yellow with pink
floral print wrap around georgette style and length, right, Jamie? And
yellow tights."
"I know where we can get a great deal on tights."
"And I was just going to ask about the color of the slippers."
"Oh, Miss Carol, he's such a pleasure to chat with."
"You'll have to send him along next week with Tammy, I've got so many
decisions, and I'm sure Jamie will just love to help in the decisions."
"He's certainly enjoyed watching the girls in the pretty outfits, right,
Jamie?"
"He's great with a sewing needle," Mother stated. Where the hell did that
come from? I've never held a sewing needle, let alone am any way
proficient. But Miss Johnson just agreed, said I looked like I could
handle a needle and thread.
Tammy was going to teach me a lesson, and I stepped right into it. She
told Miss Johnson that I was an expert on young girls fashions, always
one to give advise on what Tammy should wear. And really good with colors
too, like I was a natural at color coordinating. She told Miss Johnson,
who wanted to take advantage of such a young fashion prot?g?. Tammy also
knew that I was watching them practice during her lessons. She'd seen me
through the window enough times. And she'd seen me putting her leotards
and tights in the laundry. I guess I held a costume up against me and
looked in the mirror in the laundry room. It was a really pretty outfit,
attached tutu, and colorful. She knew I wanted to wear it, but didn't say
anything. She probably told mother, though. Maybe that's why mother is
being so weird right now. Telling Miss Johnson that I know how to sew. I
have a feeling I'll be learning real soon. And I'm going to have to learn
about color coordinating.
We stopped at a sewing machine store on the way home! Mother doesn't sew.
Tammy doesn't have a home economics gene in here body. Mother grabs my
hand and we enter the store. "Pay attention" she spits at me! You'll need
to know this stuff." Then all of the sudden, she's all nice and talkative
as the salesman approaches. They probably don't get a lot of customers so
this gentleman is extremely friendly and attentive.
"My son has shown extreme interest in tailoring, and specific interest in
ultra-lite embroidery machines. He's been getting his clothes mixed up
with my daughter!"
"They're close to the same size, you know." Anyway, can you demonstrate
some sewing machines that he can use to learn this interesting trade?" My
mouth dropped. What the heck is embroidery? This guy is flying around the
room like a chicken with it's head cut off, demonstrating monograms and
ease of use - fancy appliqu?s on the pocket of the jean - makes it
extremely easy to determine a boy's or girl's pant. He demonstrates how
easy it is to print "Princess" on a pink t-shirt - and gives it to me!
"For your sister," he says. Mother just smiles at me! He has me try it
the next time, with little kittens and a ballerina - another pink shirt.
Demonstrating that I understand how to position the image on the cloth,
and selecting the colors on the embroidery machine, mother makes her
purchase. Lots of pinks and yellow threads, black for the uniform
leotards, she tells me.
"Wal-Mart next!" as we stuff the embroidery machine into the back of the
van. "Ultra-lite my ass!" Mother slapped me for that little comment.
"I'm so happy that you've found a hobby, Jamie."
I looked at her strangely. Once again, she grabs my hand, Tammy is
giggling behind us. Mother drags me straight to the sewing section. Of
all the times I've been in Wal-Mart, I've never seen a sewing section. I
guess I've experienced tunnel vision after all, bypassing everything and
going straight to the electronic games. She's picking a little of all
kinds of material, a yard of this and 2 feet of that, lace and ribbons,
more thread and sewing needles. I didn't know that there was so much to
learn about tailoring, but mother says I'll be an expert in a few months.
"Ms. Johnson's going to need you, and with such an interest in ballet,
the delicate lace and costuming are going to be such a challenge."
