Simpleton Peck.
This story is based of a combination an old childhood story and a TV
series when I was young. Peace. Belle.
Templeton Peck always thought to be a fool. He was voted to be the
Village Idiot hands down. Most of the town folk and even his moter just
called him Simpleton Peck or just plain Simpleton. Templeton never did
anything to prove otherwise. There were times when he was seen useing a
lawn roller on his fields. Templeton or should I say Simpleton would sing
out, "I am trying to grow mashed potatoes."
Other times he was seen giving his hens hot water and corn meal.
Simpleton Peck said, "I want my hens to lay hard boiled eggs."
One rainy day, his hut was leaking. The next day when the sun was out, he
was asked why he was not fixing the roof. Simpleton said, "It dont leak
now."
Templeton or as he was known as Simpleton always wore an illfitting and a
outlandish style of clothing. Yes Templeton always looked or actted like
a fool or a simpleton.
Now the Emperor was a bit of a Dandy. Emperor DeGault was a clothing hog.
He loved buying the latest clothes and newest styles.
His Sergeant of The Guards was called B A Barracus. Nobody knew what the
B A stood for. The two most thoughts was Bad Ass or Bad Attitude. Well
that was no matter. He was always decked in gold chains and when
escorting the Emperor shouting, "Make way. Make way you fools. Make way
for the Emperor."
None dared not to heed his commands. The ones that tried, were hurled
into the ditch or the nearest pond or creek by B A.
Now one day two taylors came to town. Their cart said, "Smith & Murdock.
Taylors to the Kings and Queens everwhere. Only people who are not fit
for their station cannot see our works for what they truely are."
The Emperor was thinking. He always wanted to be one step ahead others of
royal blood. He said, "Sergeant. Get me those two taylors. With their
works, I can show up King Magnum and King Hawk. Plus those two Princes
Simon."
B A just nodded and went to get Smith and Murdock.
One hour later, B A had both Smith and Murdock before the Emperor.
Emperor DeGault said, "I would like to see your designs. I wish to have a
new set of clothes that will make me stand out above all men."
Hannibal Smith said, "Your Highness. That is but a simple task. You do
that already. My partner is the designer and fitter. I am the manager of
the team. You pick out what you want. I set the price, and Murdock makes
the design to fit you like a glove."
The Emperor just nodded and said, "Mr. Murdock. Show me your wares."
H. M . Murdock said, "Yes your Majesty. I would show you all, but I know
what designs that fit you best. I will show you those first. The rest are
meant for smaller or bigger people. I can fit them to you, but you would
not look your very best."
The Emperor said, "Please procede."
Well H M Murdock went to get his designs. (The H M stood for Howling
Mad.) Hanibal said, "Your Highness. There is a small matter. There is a
fee that must be paid. It is called a consultation fee of 800 talents of
gold."
The Emperor said, "Hmm. I think the fee should be only 200 talents."
Hanibal said, "I see that you are wise. I can lower the fee to 600
talents."
The Emperor was lost in thought and desire. Then he said, "I can offer
you 400 talents."
Hanibal paused to light his cigar. He did this to look like he was in
deep thought. Then he said, "I see that you are very shrewd. The fee is
now at 500 talents."
The Emperor said, "500 it is. Well played Mr. Smith. Well played."
H M Murdock returned and displayed his designs to the Emperor. The
Emperor saw that all designs were of a pastel or a pale color. Very
effeminate looking. The Emperor thought that this must be a trick of the
light or the age of the scroll. Yes that is it. An old scroll in bad
light. Then he said, "I like design number 46 DD. Blue for color."
H M Murdock " Excellent taste your Majesty. Green, yellow, and orange
also work well for you. Only the time of year refelects the color best.
Shall I make copies in those colors as well?"
The Emperor thought it over and said, "Yes. Please do so and one in red
as well. A new outfit for each season will speak well for any man. Can
you make the colors brighter?"
H M Murdock said, "That is not a problem and is doable. You have most
excellent taste."
Hanibal spoke again. "Well now your Highness. Now we come to the price.
Normaly I would ask a total of 5000 talents of gold. However since you
are a wise and generous soul, my offer is 4000 talents of gold. Half
now, and half when done."
The Emperor said, "Done with a bonus of 500 talents if done within 8
weeks or less.Another 200 talents for each week less than 8.If it is a
day late a 100 talent fine for each day late."
Hanibal said, "Done deal. Now let us seal it."
Both dipped cheese in a sauce and wrapped their arms as they tasted as
one. Then sipped some wine and drank as one. The deal was sealed.
The Emperor gave them a room and near free reign of the palace. Only B A
was their escort. Murdock only left to use the Water Closet. He ate all
his meals in the room. He only ate fresh fruit, cheese, mashed potatoes,
and hard boiled eggs. Hanibal would eat in the room as well at times.
Other times he would eat with the Emperor and play mind challenges with
him. It seemed they each loved to try best each other. Hanibal would make
some of them more interesting by placeing wagers on them. While each one
would win some of them, Hanibal was always winning the ones with the
wagers.
Now Simpleton was still doing his foolosh actions. He walked backwards at
times to see if anyone was trying to sneak up on him. At least once aday
he would bump into B A. B A would only say " Out of my way you fool!"
After that, Simpleton would go to his home.
Now H M worked on the designs. He made sure they fit all the measurments
of the Emperor. In five and a half weeks, the outfits were ready. H M
even added a special twist. He sent word to the Emperor.Emperor DeGault
was all smiles. He said, "They all are ready. They are ready in time for
the Fall Fest. The bonus offers I made are worth it. I will even add a
1000 talent tip. A new outfit for the Grand Fall Fest Parade and Review."
Well parade day came and H M fussed over the Emperor like a mother hen.
The Emperor wondered how he could carry a thing when the outfits had no
pockets. H M said, "I have added a small matching bag that can be worn
over the shoulder or around the waist like a sporn."
Emperor DeGualt asked, "What of the torso and waist lines?"
H M said, "They bring out the best of your best features. Remember our
claim that only people who are not worth their station cannot see these
outfits for what they are."
Emperor DeGault said, "Mr. Smith. I see that your work is all that you
claim it to be. I will pay you all your fees that we agreed to."
The Emperor after paying Hanibal, stepped out onto the parade route. All
the town folk saw the Emperor and his outfit. They thought the saw the
Emperor in a Ballgown with a matching handbag, but didnot want to say a
word. They felt if they did, they would not be worthy of their station.
All except Simpleton Peck. He sang out, "The Emperor is in a dress! Hey
Empress! Nice handbag! Who is your designer?"
B A shouted, "SHUT UP YOU FOOL!"
Now the people saw and heard all of this. They wanted to laugh at
Simpleton Peack. Then they thought if he is not worthy of being a fool,
he might be wise. They all joined in with Simpleton's claims. The
Emeperor just ran and hid.
Hanibal and H M moved out of town. Simpleton returned to being Templeton
Peck and left the town. B A said, "I will hunt the fools down and not
return until I get them all." (He didnot say he replaced the locks on the
treasury and the armory. He kept the the keys.)
They all met up ten miles out of town. Hanibal split up all the spoils
except what he took off of Emperor with his bets. Templeton delivered
over all the gold and weapons that B A took off the Emperor. All the time
that they bumped into each other was a chance to pass things off.
Including the gowns and handbags. H M couldnot create a dress, but could
adapt a cheap off the rack gown to fit the Emperor. The handbags were
also cheap off the rack ones.
Hanibal was heard to exclaim, "I love it when a plan comes together. Next
we must deal with Emperor and maybe Empress Clinton."
