As the guards came into my cell I wriggled out under the bed whilst their
attention was fixed on what they thought was me. One turned around and
saw me as I got to my feet. "Stop right there." I had no intention of
stopping. As he tried to grab me I slammed my foot between his legs as I
had been taught in case anybody tried to rape me. I grabbed his keys,
slammed the cell door shut and locked it, then fled as quickly as I
could. Behind me I heard the outraged howls and the hammering on the cell
door and I knew that more guards would quickly come to investigate. I saw
a fire escape, slammed through it, setting off an alarm as I did so, and
then slid down the banisters as quickly as possible, not caring at that
moment of the danger of falling to my death.
I reached the bottom safely and hurried off as quickly as I could,
determined to put as far a distance between myself and that horrible
place as I possibly could.
I stopped in a well-lit side street and tried to think what to do and
where to go. I could go to the house where my parents lived but they
might have moved. If I did get to them they might refuse to believe who I
really was, but I was confident that I could make them believe me by
telling them about an embarrassing thing I did aged nine that only I and
they would know about. Whilst they thought I was guilty of murder, I
doubted that they would support my forced feminisation and hand me back
to my captors. However, I knew that their house would probably be the
first place that would be raided and I needed someone who would be able
to help me hide for a few days.
But who? I had no friends having spent my last eight years locked up in
prison, and I could hardly count on the kindness of strangers. Of course-
my boyfriend. He loved me; or rather he loved who he thought I was. Maybe
he could take me to the house of a friend for three days and then I could
make contact with my parents, who could get me to a lawyer. Once I could
reach a lawyer who was prepared to believe my story and take it before a
court, at the very least I would be spared from being surgically turned
into a girl, and I might win compensation or my freedom. The sentence
handed down to me by the judge eight years ago had mentioned nothing
about being forced to become a girl. I could bargain-I would willingly
give up any compensation that I could get in exchange for being set free
on probation.
I had no mobile phone with me and even if I did have one it could have
led anyone who was tracking it straight to me. I took a few coins from my
white leather handbag and dialled my boyfriend's number with shaking
fingers. He answered after a few rings of the phone. "Edward?it's me,
your Princess. I really need you to come out and pick me up. Yes, I know
it's two' o'clock in the morning, but you're the only one who can help
me. I saw something I shouldn't have, and now someone wants me dead. I'll
tell you more about it when you come and get me."
It was what seemed like a long wait, and a cold one too, as my faux-fur
coat and my hat with the earflaps were back at the secret prison that I
had escaped from. My silk purple shirt at least gave me some protection
from the cold but I was still shivering within a few minutes. I wondered
if my captors had told the police that a female prisoner, Amber Foyle,
wanted no doubt for some serious crime, had escaped from custody. More
likely they would not want to involve the police in case the truth
somehow escaped, but they would certainly be looking for me themselves.
At last my boyfriend turned up, and I was so happy to see him that I
jumped into his car and planted a big warm kiss on his lips, not caring
at that moment that both he and I were male.
"So what happened? What did you see that would make someone want you
dead? A contract killing?" "You could say that, yes. If they catch me
they'll cut me up."
"Who? Not your parents, surely?"
"No. It's really hard to explain?"
Just then an announcement came on the car radio. "Police are looking for
Amber Foyle, who is aged 18 with brown eyes and brown hair, in connection
with an offence against a young child."
He slammed on the brakes. "Give me one good reason why I should not hand
you over to the police right now."
"They're lying, I never did anything against anyone. I'll tell you
everything."
For the next ten minutes I poured out my story of what had happened to
me, leaving out nothing at all. He glared at me. "So you're not a girl at
all, and you tricked me into falling in love with you. And you killed
Katie Garrett as well."
"I had no choice, they forced me to dress like this, they forced me to
lie to seduce you and become your girlfriend."
"I am not happy with you?and nor do I want to end up in trouble for
helping an offender. If you have indeed harmed a child or worse and then
made up this story, and I help you, I could end up as the male version of
Maxine Carr, first sent to prison and then forced to change my identity
to escape vigilante attacks. But I will give you five minutes. Get out of
my car and run as far away as you can in that time before I phone the
police. I'll tell them that you threw yourself out of the car when the
news report came on. It is only because I think that your story just
might be true that I am not handing you over to the police right now. Go
now before I change my mind."
I was crying and my eye-make up was running down my face as I fled from
him. Sooner or later they would catch me and no doubt their revenge would
be terrible. I found my way to the Thames Embankment and as I looked into
the river's icy waters I decided to leave the diary and throw myself in.
I would leave the diary behind in the slim hope that it would fall into
the hands of somebody who would be able to get my plight reported in the
press. If I survived and swam to the other side and somehow got out, my
pursuers would surely think me dead and I could go into hiding and eke
out some kind of a life for myself. And if I did drown then it would be
better then whatever horrible fate awaited me.
To you who read this, I beg you to make my story known in the Press and
to try and rescue the three others who are held captive and are being
changed into girls against their will.

Sergeant Howard closed the diary and spoke over his radio. "To all the
police constables in this building who are not busy on another case, I
want you to come to my office. We are going out on a raid. You will learn
more when you get there."
