Chapter 1
Within seconds after Special Agent Ally Burns sat down on her couch, her
cat Bogie jumped up onto her lap.
"Please...make yourself comfortable," she stated as she reached down to
scratch the cat's chin.
Bogie purred contently as she found a comfortable position.
Ally reached over for the remote and turned the TV on and the clicked to
find the channel she was looking for.
Carol, Ally's partner, walked in and smiled. "Well, you two look
comfortable."
Ally smiled back. "Excuse me if I don't get up but it would disturb our
child."
Carol walked over and leaned over to kiss Ally. Then she reached down to
pet Bogie. Bogie ramped up her purring a notch or two and rolled over so
her belly was exposed for a tummy rub.
"Well, we can't have that, can we?" asked Carol. "So what are you
watching?"
Ally rolled her eyes. "It's work related. Robert recommended that I
watch it before tomorrow's brief."
Ally was referring to Robert Ledyard, her boss and mentor at the Agency.
Carol looked at the opening credits of the show. "'Gotcha'? What kind of
a title is that?"
"I know, terrible title but they didn't ask my opinion," replied Ally.
"The show isn't much better."
"What is it?" asked Carol as she sat down on the couch next to Ally.
"It's one of those 'reality' shows where they set up sexual predators by
luring them to a house. The predator thinks that they're about to meet
up with a teen and instead there's a camera crew there," explained Ally.
"That's nothing new," said Carol.
"This one is," replied Ally. "The reporter bypasses the local police and
makes his own citizen's arrest of the predator. He has a couple of
private security people there to assist him."
"Sounds like someone has a rather big ego," said Carol.
Ally nodded. "So far everything he's done is legal."
"So why the interest then?"
"The reporter's name is Greg Simons. He used to be a state cop before
switching to reporting. The problem is that so far Greg and his crew
have wrecked several investigations by local and state authorities. Oh,
they've caught some lowlife predators, but their show has managed to
scare off the big fish."
"Haven't the local departments talked to him about this?" asked Carol.
"Yes and he doesn't care. His show is getting great ratings and he
argues that he's just doing what the police can't. There's a strong
belief that he's being tipped off about ongoing investigations."
"Still, this doesn't sound like something that should involve you,"
stated Carol.
Ally nodded. "Robert's holding something back...it has to be a big
deal."
The show was fairly predictable and didn't appear to break any new
ground. The sexual predators would show up at the stakeout house and be
confronted by Greg Simons. This was where it departed from the shows
that it copied. Greg would provoke the suspect into attacking him. The
ex-state trooper was obviously an accomplished martial artist and he
easily subdued the suspect. Greg was a large muscular man, nearly six-
two and at what Ally estimated to be around two hundred pounds, appeared
to be in excellent physical shape.
"Wow, this is incredibly awful," commented Carol. "I mean, I don't have
any sympathy for the predators, but this show is really dragging TV down
to an even lower level. Have any of these suspects sued Simons?"
"Not yet. The people he's caught have enough problems of their own,"
replied Ally. "I have a feeling that there's something else going on."
"Do you know how he finds his suspects?" asked Carol.
"He claims to use the Internet...like us," said Ally. She was the
Agency's head of its Internet sexual crimes department.
"Judging by the tone of your voice you suspect something else," said
Carol.
Ally nodded. "So far all the people he's nailed are involved in the sex
trade...granted they are all low-level pawns; but even so he's making it
look too easy. I hope tomorrow's brief provides some answers."
The show ended and Ally turned off the TV.
"Come on, let's go to bed," said Carol as she stood up.
"Do you mean go to bed...or something else?" asked Ally with a grin.
"That all depends on you...my dear," replied Carol.
Chapter 2
Ally headed to work the next morning feeling wonderful. It was a bright
and sunny early fall day and she didn't even mind the slight chill in
the air. She was so happy over the fact that she was now a "complete
woman" since her SRS. Even though Carol had always treated her as a
woman, it still felt good to no longer have a constant reminder of her
original gender between her legs.
She drove her own car to the Agency's headquarters. Even though Carol
was also an agent, they didn't work in the same departments. Carol was
currently working on an interstate bank robbery investigation. As much
as Ally loved her job, there were days when she envied Carol's job as a
field supervisor.
The first thing Ally did when she entered her office was to reach into
the small fridge next to desk and pulled out a can of Diet Coke. It
would be the first of several cans she would drink throughout the day.
She read her email and reviewed the status reports of ongoing
investigations that her department was conducting. Ally was very proud
of her agents and the work they did. In addition to conducting their own
investigations, they were currently assisting dozens of other law
enforcement agencies throughout the country.
Donna, Ally's handpicked supervisor of the Northeast branch of the
department knocked on her door.
Ally looked up from her computer. "What's up?"
"I just wanted to let you know that I'll be leaving a little early today
as I have a medical appointment," said Donna.
Ally nodded. "Is everything okay?"
Donna patted her extended belly. "Yes, it's routine. However, with twins
my doctor likes to see me regularly."
She was currently six months pregnant.
"Is Ed taking you?" asked Ally, referring to Donna's husband, who was a
field agent.
Donna shook her head. "He's on temporary assignment with Matt Walsh."
Ally nodded. Matt had recently been recruited from the San Diego PD by
Steve Williams, the head of the Agency's elite Spec-Ops department.
"Have you given any more thought as to who you want to run your region
while you're on maternity leave?" asked Ally.
Donna nodded. "Jenny Sullivan. I know she's only been on the team for
eight months, but she's the best agent in the department."
Jenny Sullivan had been brought into the department six months earlier.
She was twenty-eight and had been a field agent in the Midwest office.
Jenny requested a transfer to the department following the breakup of
large internet child sex ring in Chicago.
"I know that, but will the team follow her?"
"I think so. I've started to groom her for the job and so far everyone
is happy. She's a natural leader. My only worry is that I will lose her
when I come back."
Ally smiled. "Shaw will be retiring next year so the Midwest office will
be open."
"I know," replied Donna.
Ally looked at her watch. "I gotta run, I have a meeting with Robert."
Donna nodded.
Chapter 3
Ally walked into the secure conference room and sat down next to Robert
Ledyard.
"Prompt as always," he commented as he glanced at his watch.
"Actually I'm ten minutes early," she replied without looking at her
watch.
He nodded. "That's what I meant." A slight smile appeared on his face.
Ally smiled back. She felt fortunate to have worked so closely with
Robert since she joined The Agency. She was also glad that he seemed to
have forgiven her for her stretching the rules the previous year.
"So who are we waiting for?" asked Ally.
"Two people. Have you met Agent Molly Andrews?" he asked.
Ally shook her head, "The name's familiar, she works out of the Boston
office right?"
Robert nodded. "She's on our corruption task force."
Ally figured that Robert would explain more once Molly arrived. "So
who's the other person?"
"Michael Deverioux," replied Robert.
"Really?" replied Ally barely holding back her surprise.
Robert smiled. "So you've heard of him?"
Ally nodded. "He's in charge of Interpol's sexual trafficking
department. I've read many of his reports. He's a real legend in the
field."
"Well, they should both be here shortly."
Chapter 4
Molly Andrews was a tall athletic blonde with striking sapphire colored
eyes. She looked more like a fashion model than a federal agent. Ally
was surprised by how young Molly looked and suspected that the woman was
in her late twenties.
Molly walked into the conference room with a dark haired man, who Ally
immediately recognized as Michael Deverioux.
Michael was a short, but powerfully built man with a deep weathered tan.
At first look, he appeared to be rather average; but Ally could sense
that this was just a fa?ade and in some ways he reminded Ally of a
slightly older version of Steve Williams; especially in the intensity of
his eyes.
Robert made the introductions.
"I'm honored to finally meet you in person," said Ally as she shook
Michael's hand.
He shook his head. "Actually I was about to say that about meeting you,
Special Agent Burns."
Ally detected only a slight French accent in his English.
Ally cast a look at Robert. "Um, you know me?"
Michael nodded. "Of course. I'm very impressed with what you've done as
the Protector."
Ally felt her face get warm as Michael mentioned the nickname that she
had initially earned when she was working in a small police department
in Orange County California.
"I'm even more impressed that you arrested Margo Simon. We had been
chasing her for years," he continued.
"I didn't do that alone...it was a group effort," she replied.
Michael smiled. "Of course."
Molly looked at Ally. "You're the Protector?"
"It was a name given to me when I first got started with internet sex
crimes. I have passed it on to my department now," replied Ally.
Molly looked at Ally and nodded. Ally knew the look on Molly's face; it
meant that Molly also knew Ally's past.
Thankfully Robert interrupted the greetings to start the meeting.
Chapter 5
Robert started the brief and immediately confirmed Ally's theory about
Greg Simons and his show.
"First what is said in here, stays in here...for now. Cover stories will
be used for anyone else brought into this investigation," stated Robert.
Ally wasn't surprised at his orders and suspected that something big was
about to be disclosed.
"We know that his producers have been in contact with several of the
police departments concerning possible leads on sexual predators.
However, we have just obtained information that the show has been
receiving tips," continued Robert.
"Do we know who is providing the tips?" asked Ally.
Robert smiled. "That's why we're here."
"Normally we wouldn't care if some reporter wants to take credit for
getting sexual predators off the street, but in the last five cases
shown on the program, active investigations have been compromised," said
Molly.
Michael took a file out of his leather case. "We know from our sources
that all of the men caught in the last two shows were involved in
international sexual trafficking; but they are all at the bottom of
their organizations. The senior people have been scared away."
"So who is tipping off Simons?" asked Ally. She wondered what this had
to do with her department.
"We believe that Simons is getting his information from two sources,"
said Molly as she leaned back in her chair.
"And they would be?" asked Ally, barely hiding her annoyance. She liked
to get right to the point and disliked the cloak and dagger attitude
that many in The Agency seemed to have.
"We suspect that some of the information is coming from someone in the
Agency," said Robert ignoring her impatience.
"And the other?" asked Ally.
"That's where you come in," said Michael. "We believe that an organized
crime group is giving out information to get rid of the competition. We
also believe that this group is working with a mole in your agency to
make the information look more legitimate."
Ally looked over at Robert who nodded in agreement.
"So who is running this criminal organization?" asked Ally.
"Have you heard of Dr. Jun Liang?" he asked.
"Chinese national, expert in brainwashing and currently an international
fugitive," said Ally. "She was a key member of a sexual slave
organization run by Dr. Leala Zachariah. I also understand she has a
death sentence hanging over her head if she is ever caught by the
People's Republic of China."
Michael nodded. "Very good. We believe she is now working for someone
new...an old friend of yours."
Ally looked at Robert again and then back at Michael. "Margo Simon?"
Michael nodded.
"Margo's locked up in a Super-Max prison, how can she be running a
criminal organization?" asked Ally.
"While your organization did an excellent job in destroying her
organization here in the states, we know that Margo had another one set
up in Europe and the Far East. She kept it totally separate from the one
here in the states," he continued.
"And why haven't you taken it down?" asked Ally.
"Until recently it had been shut-down. Again, we can thank you for this.
Once Margo was arrested there was no one to run it. However, Dr. Liang
has now taken over and has been very aggressive in taking out their
competition."
"And you think that's why they've been tipping off Simons?" asked Ally.
Michael nodded again. "The men arrested all have ties to sexual tours
and abductions overseas. We know that they were, for the lack of a
better term, the salesmen. They recruited people for overseas sex tours
and in some cases set up the purchase of sex slaves."
"And so what do you want from me? It sounds like you have an
investigation well underway," said Ally.
"We'd like to use some of your agents to approach Simons. This way we
don't tip off the mole or Dr. Liang that we're investigating them," said
Molly. "We want to use agents based out of your department because it
will look less suspicious."
"That's a simple enough request; you could have just asked and kept me
out of the loop," said Ally.
"Actually I requested that you become involved," said Michael. "I need
insight into Margo Simon. Insight that only you can provide."
Ally nodded. "Whatever I can do to help."
"Excellent," said Michael.
"One last thing...Simons isn't related to Margo in any way, right?"
asked Ally.
"No, that's just a coincidence," said Molly.
"Good," said Ally. "So where and when do you need the agents?"
"Simons is scheduled to do a show in Norfolk this week," she said.
"Okay," said Ally. "Will anyone else be going with them?"
Molly shook her head. "No. I'll brief them on what we're looking for."
"Who will you use?' asked Robert.
"I'd like to talk to Donna first so we don't disrupt any ongoing
investigations," said Ally.
"I'd like to meet them today," said Molly.
Ally looked at her watch. "Be up at my office at one and I'll introduce
them to you or would you rather have me bring them down here?"
Molly nodded. "In your office will be better, we want to make this look
routine."
"When can we talk about Margo Simon?" asked Michael. "Do you want to do
it over lunch?"
Ally shook her head. "I'd be afraid that I might get sick."
It took Michael a moment to realize that Ally was being sarcastic. He
then smiled.
"Why don't we talk about her this afternoon around two?" suggested Ally.
"Two it is," he replied.
Chapter 6
Ally called Donna into her office.
"I need two of your agents for a little road trip," said Ally as she
opened another can of Diet Coke. She then explained the circumstances of
the trip. "They will be briefed this afternoon and leave tomorrow. I
suspect that they'll be out of the office for a day."
Donna thought about it for a moment. "How about Jenny and Joe? Jenny
likes getting out in the field and so does Joe."
Ally nodded, they would have been her choices. "How's Joe doing?"
"He's pretty much back to normal," replied Donna. "He just had a checkup
and his numbers are strong. He's determined to beat it."
Joe Davis had recently been diagnosed HIV positive. He had also told
Ally that he was transgendered, but very much in the closet.
"That's wonderful news," said Ally. She then sighed. "That's the one
thing I really hate about my current job is that I'm stuck in this
office so much. I miss working with the teams."
"I know the feeling," said Donna. "I'll tell them to be in your office
at one."
"Thanks Donna."
Chapter 7
Molly briefed Joe and Jenny on their meeting with Greg Simons. She told
them that they were to make it look routine and to ask general questions
concerning the show's techniques for catching suspects.
Both Joe and Jenny gave Ally glances as if to ask what's really going
on, but neither said this aloud.
After they left, Molly closed the door to Ally's office.
"They seem to be good agents," said Molly.
"Actually Agents Davis and Sullivan are both excellent agents,"
countered Ally, barely holding back her annoyance. "So what do you
expect to get out of this dog and pony show?"
Molly smiled. "That's what I heard about you...no nonsense. We have a
couple of suspects for the mole. We hope that Simons makes contact with
them after meeting with your agents."
"And then what will happen?" asked Ally.
"That will be up to The Director," replied Molly. "I suspect that he'll
try and turn the mole and use them...either that or they'll be looking
at life in prison."
Ally nodded.
"Look, I'm sorry if I come off as a bit of a bitch, but it's my job.
Let's face it, in my line of work friends are hard to come by," said
Molly.
Ally laughed. "At least you know it. Do you like your job?"
Molly nodded. "I wish it wasn't necessary, but unfortunately not
everyone can be trusted. Most of the time we catch them pretty quickly;
but this one has been hard; I've been looking for them for almost two
years."
Ally was shocked. "Two years?"
Molly nodded. "I'm sorry, but I've already told you too much. When we
get them I'll tell you everything."
"Okay," replied Ally.
"I'm glad to have finally met you, Ally. I've heard so many good things
about you. I also admire you for what you've done," said Molly
"I'm just doing my job," she replied.
"That's not what I meant," said Molly. "I mean about the whole change
thing."
"Thank you," replied Ally. While she wasn't embarrassed about talking
about being transgendered, she didn't want to be known as the
transgendered agent.
"I hope that we can work together," continued Molly.
"That makes two of us," replied Ally.
Chapter 8
Ally grabbed her fourth can of Diet Coke and headed to the briefing room
to meet Michael.
When she arrived she found him studying the files on Margo Simon. The
entire table was covered several layers deep with documents and photos.
"This was some excellent work," he commented.
"Like I said before, I had a lot of help," she replied as she sat down.
"Yes, but it was under your leadership that the Agency destroyed her
entire organization here in the states."
Ally shrugged. "I'm just glad she's locked up. I've met some really bad
people in my life, but Margo is the worst. I think it's because she's so
intelligent. To be honest I wish she was dead."
Michael nodded. "I know what you mean. So you've actually talked to
her?"
Ally took a sip of her soda. "Several times. It's rather intense because
you can tell that she's so calculating."
"I've met a few like that," he replied.
"What I don't understand is that you think Margo is working with Dr.
Liang. I mean Margo gave us information that helped us break up Dr.
Leala Zachariah's organization in exchange for a coffee pot."
"That's exactly why we think they're working together," replied Michael.
"So Margo used us to take out a rival?"
"We believe that she had Dr. Liang infiltrate Zachariah's group to
gather info on it. When you came in asking for information, Margo
figured that it would be easier and cheaper to have The Agency wipe out
the rival group."
"So do you think that Margo's going to try to escape soon?" asked Ally.
"It wouldn't surprise me," he replied.
"And you've talked to Robert about this?"
Michael nodded. "He introduced me to one of your fellow agents and
discussed this possibility for several hours yesterday."
"Was it Steve Williams?"
Michael smiled back. "Yes. He's everything I've heard of and then some."
Ally nodded. She then wondered if that was the case that Ed and Matt
were working on.
"If Margo escapes, I suspect that she will come after you." said
Michael. "As you know, she's very vindictive and she would want to pay
back those who put her away before she fled the country. I also suspect
that she would want to do it herself...or at least be present."
"If she does escape and come after me it will be the last thing she ever
does," replied Ally.
"Seriously, have you seen the psychological reports on her?"
Ally nodded. "They're creepier than a Stephen King novel."
Michael laughed. "Seriously, she's bitter that you beat her and she will
certainly seek revenge against you."
"That'll be her mistake. If she was smart and was able to escape she
should go into hiding. Coming after me will just make it easier to catch
her," replied Ally.
Chapter 8
Ally and Michael worked until six.
"Do you have any plans for dinner?" he asked.
"I'm married," she replied with a wink.
He laughed. "So am I. I just hate eating alone."
"What do you like?" she asked.
"To be honest I could go for a nice steak," he replied.
"I know just the place," she said.
***
An hour later they were sitting in a restaurant in downtown Alexandria.
It was a local place that was also a favorite of the police and federal
agents.
"Will you let me pick the wine?" she asked.
"Maybe...after all I am French and it's a matter of national pride that
we know the most about wine," he replied.
"I think you'll approve of what I order, wine is my area of expertise,"
she stated with confidence. "They have an excellent selection here."
He nodded as he reviewed the wine list.
"Excuse me for asking this, but you don't have much of an accent," said
Ally as she narrowed down her choice to one of three wines.
"I was born in Paris, but my father was in the diplomatic service so I
spent much of life traveling around the world. I've lived in London,
Ottawa, Tokyo, Jakarta and I even lived in DC. In fact I went to college
in California," he replied.
"Really? I was raised in So Cal," she replied.
"Yes, I know," he replied with a grin. "Now, have you picked out a
wine?"
Ally nodded. "I think you'll like it, it's one of Carol and my
favorites."
"Carol is your...partner?" he asked.
"Yes. They really need to come up with a better name for it," she
replied.
He laughed. "We haven't come up with anything better back in Europe."
Chapter 9
"Well?" she asked as he sipped his wine.
"This is excellent," he replied as he looked at the bottle.
The wine she selected was a Jonathan Edwards 2005 Napa Valley Zinfandel.
"It has a nice smooth flavor," he commented. "A little like raspberry."
"We discovered it when we were up in Connecticut last year," said Ally.
"If you'd like I can give you a bottle to take back."
"They'd shoot me for treason," he replied with a wink. "But it would be
worth the risk."
They didn't talk shop, although Ally was anxious to discuss what sort of
techniques Interpol used to catch sexual predators.
She did learn that Michael owned a restored farmhouse twenty miles
outside of Paris. He lived there with his wife, three children, two
dogs, three cats, and assorted chickens and ducks.
"And the cats don't bother the birds?" she asked.
"No, they're too lazy and pampered to bother," he replied.
"Does you wife work?"
"Adele is a reporter and author," he replied.
"What does sort of books does she write?"
"Mostly crime novels, but they are usually set in the 17th and 18th
century," he replied.
"Has she been published in English?"
Michael shook his head. "Not yet."
"Too bad, I think her books sound interesting," she replied.
Michael refilled their glasses. "So why did you go into law
enforcement?"
"I wanted the challenge. I was a runt and it was the last thing that
anyone thought I would do. You know my past and so I guess I wanted to
prove myself."
"You have definitely done that," he replied.
"Thank you," she replied.
"I know we can't talk about the case right now, but I would like your
assistance," he continued.
"It would be my pleasure," she replied.
Chapter 10
"Well, it sounds like you have had an interesting day," said Carol as
they cuddled next to each other in bed.
"That's an understatement," replied Ally. "The highlight was having
Michael admit that he liked American wine."
Carol chuckled. "Well, he's not the standard Frenchman from what you've
told me."
"Have you ever worked with anyone from Interpol?"
Carol shook her head. "No, but I've heard they are very professional."
Ally nodded.
"I can tell that there's something bothering you and that you can't tell
me about it," continued Carol.
Ally nodded again. She was about to explain when Carol stopped her by
gently placing a finger across her lips.
"Honey, you don't have to tell me a thing," said Carol. "It must be
important and I imagine that you will tell me when you can."
"I'm so lucky to be with you," said Ally.
Carol leaned over and kissed her. "And don't you forget it."
Chapter 11
The next day, Ally met with Michael and they discussed the case.
"And you're convinced that this organization is run by Margo Simon?"
asked Ally.
He nodded. "What's bothersome is that they've mainly kept low key until
recently. In the past few months they've begun to go after their rivals;
this whole thing with the TV show is just one technique they've used."
"This would also mean that Margo is in contact with them," said Ally.
"Yes, but how? She's only had a few visitors and they have all been
cleared," said Michael.
"Have the guards been investigated?" she asked.
Michael nodded.
"I'd like to look at her routine. Robert can get that for me," said
Ally.
Michael nodded. "Now I have another request, can I get a tour of your
department?"
Ally smiled back. "Yes, I'll get Donna and have her to show you around.
I would be interested in your observations and suggestions when you're
done."
"Of course, but I think it is I who will be taking all the notes," he
replied.
Chapter 12
After leaving Michael with Donna, Ally headed over to Robert's office.
He readily agreed to her request.
"The information should be on your desk by tomorrow," he said.
"Thank you," she replied.
Robert was about to say something else when his phone rang. Ally waved
good bye and started out the door.
"Ally, come back in and close the door behind you," ordered Robert.
From the tone of his voice and the look on his face she could tell
something was wrong and she did as he ordered.
He hung up the phone and looked up at her. "Ally, you'd better sit
down."
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"There's been a shooting," he said.
"Who?" asked Ally barely containing her fear. She began to pray that it
wasn't Carol.
"Joe and Jenny," he replied.
"What?" she replied. "How?"
"They were shot during their meeting with Greg Simons."
Ally stared back. "I take it he's been shot too."
"Along with his whole crew. The Director is expecting us and he'll give
us more information."
"What's the condition of Joe and Jenny?" asked Ally.
"Both are in the ICU, that's all I know," said Robert as he stood up.
Ally nodded and prayed for the recovery of her agents.
Chapter 13
Robert and Ally were immediately sent into The Director's office.
They stood in front of his desk, neither agent wanted to sit down.
"Ally, there will be helicopter taking off for Norfolk in ten minutes,"
said The Director. "I want you on and try to determine just what the
hell happened."
"Thank you," she replied. "How are they?"
"They're both alive and in surgery," he replied. "However, Agent Davis
may not make it. He took a head shot at short range."
Ally gasped. "So what happened?"
"Someone killed Gregory Simons and three of his filming crew. They were
in a house that they were using for the show. Joe and Jenny arrived and
were ambushed," said the Director. "I have other agents heading to the
scene as we speak to assist the locals. Ally, I know you're concerned
about your agents, but I need someone from the Agency in charge at the
scene until we can get an investigative team there."
"I understand," replied Ally. "Who knows about this?"
"I will be informing Donna shortly. I know you want to do that, but it
is my job."
"Yes sir," she replied. "I'll call when I get there."
"Thank you, Ally."
Ally nodded and left for the heliport on the roof of the building.
Chapter 14
Ally was met by a Virginia State Trooper who drove her immediately to
the scene of the shooting.
The house that Simons was using was roped off and surrounded by police
vehicles. The press was being held back several houses away. A satellite
uplink truck and several local news vans were already visible including
one from the network affiliate that carried Greg Simons' show.
Normally when she entered a crime scene Ally was very careful not to
step on the toes of the local detectives and investigators, but this
time was different. She wasn't in the mood to smooth egos.
"I'm Special Agent Burns, who is in charge?" she asked a uniformed
officer as she pulled out her badge.
He pointed to a large African-American man. "Detective King."
Ally ducked under the tape, walked over to the detective and introduced
herself.
"I'm here until the investigative team arrives, they should be here in
under an hour," said Ally. "So what do you have?"
"We know that Simons was here to film his show. We suspect that the
pervert showed up and when confronted he killed them. Your agents
arrived and were shot as the suspect fled the scene. We found them just
inside the front door. One was able to call for help."
"Have the bodies been removed from the scene yet?" asked Ally.
"No, our CSI people are still working on them," he said.
"I'd like to take a look," said Ally as she headed towards the front
door without waiting for permission.
Detective King followed her inside.
Ally looked at the bodies and saw that all four were lying on their
stomachs. She could see that the film crewmembers were all shot in the
back of the head.
"How was Simons shot?" she asked.
The CSI tech looked up from her work. "Four shots in the chest, one in
the forehead."
"What kind of weapon?" asked Ally as she crouched down next to one of
the bodies.
Another investigator walked over. "Some sort of large caliber, but I
don't recognize the shell casings."
"Can I see one?" she asked.
The man nodded and handed Ally a bag that held the casing. She looked at
the markings on the end.
"Well?" asked the man as if he expected Ally to be as puzzled as he was.
"Definitely Eastern European, maybe Russian," she replied. "I would also
say military in origin."
The man nodded. It was obvious the fed knew her stuff. "Thanks."
Ally turned to the detective. "Did anyone see the shooters?"
"You mean shooter," he corrected.
Ally held back her anger. "You really think that just one man did all
this? This wasn't done by one man who was angry over being caught in a
television show sting. This was a well planned out attack. Look at the
bodies, these men were killed execution style. I imagine that there were
two or three shooters. One kept them covered as the other or others
killed them. Look at bodies again; they made no attempt to escape. Did
anyone see anything?"
"So far nothing," replied the Detective meekly. He wasn't pleased to be
dressed down by a fed, but it was obvious that she was right. "We were
called after a neighbor heard a gunshot."
"They only heard one?" asked Ally.
Detective King nodded.
"How many shell casing have you collected?"
"We have thirty so far," said the CSI.
"And the neighbor only heard one?" repeated Ally.
Detective King nodded.
"So that means that either the neighbor was deaf or the shooters were
using silencers," said Ally.
"And your agents?" asked Detective King.
"How were they shot?" asked Ally.
Detective King motioned to one of the CSI people who handed Ally a
clipboard.
Ally read the notes and looked at the drawings. Joe walked in first and
was shot in the head and chest. Jenny was standing behind him and was
able to get out her weapon and was able to get off one shot before being
hit three times in the chest. Ally realized that it was Jenny's shot
that the neighbor heard.
"They arrived here and like you said were ambushed as they walked into
the house," said Ally. She could picture them walking into the house and
being confronted by the assailants. It was amazing that Jenny was able
to get out her weapon and get off a shot.
She studied the pictures and the notes of the CSI.
"The rounds penetrated their vests?" asked Ally.
The CSI man nodded.
Ally looked at Detective King. "And you still think that one man did all
this? This has all the markings of a professional hit. The only thing
that went wrong for the shooters was the fact that my agents showed up,
otherwise you probably wouldn't even know that these men had been
killed...of course this is just my theory."
"Damn good theory," said Detective King. "Look, it's obvious that you're
right, so what do you want us to do?"
Ally pulled out her phone and called Robert.
Chapter 15
The Agency team arrived ten minutes later and Ally headed over to the
hospital.
When she arrived she was given the bad news; Joe had died on the
operating table.
The surgeon explained that the damage was too severe.
"What about Agent Sullivan?" Ally asked.
The surgeon shrugged her shoulders and rubbed her eyes. "I don't know
how... but she's going to make it."
"Thank god," said Ally.
"She'll be laid up for a while," continued the surgeon.
"Whatever she needs just let us know," said Ally.
"She was shot three times in the chest; all shots penetrated her vest,"
added the surgeon.
"I'd like any bullets you can retrieve," said Ally.
The surgeon nodded. "We have three that should help you identify the
shooters. The rest were too damaged."
"Keep them safe, an agent will be by shortly to get them," said Ally.
"Thank you for everything. You really know what you're doing."
The surgeon cracked a weak smile, "I used to work in a hospital in New
York City in the bad part of town. The knowledge came with the
territory. I came here to get away from crap like this. So much for that
little plan."
"Thank you," she said.
"I'm just sorry we couldn't save both of them," he said.
Ally watched him walk away. It began to sink in that Joe was dead and
Jenny was severely wounded. She felt like crying, but she knew that she
had to call The Director first.
She told him about Joe and Jenny first and then she updated him on the
investigation.
"Thank you, Ally," he said. "I'll be there in an hour."
Chapter 16
The local police kept the press away from the waiting room as The
Director and Robert arrived.
"I'm flying in their parents," said The Director as he greeted Ally.
"That was very thoughtful," she replied. "How are Donna and the rest of
the department taking it?"
"I briefed them before we left. Naturally they're shaken and we've
brought in Jenna and her counselors to assist them," said The Director.
"How are you doing?"
"I'm too angry right now to know," she replied. "But thank you for
asking."
The Director nodded. "I understand completely. I also want to thank you
for what you did down here. The lead investigator concurs with your
initial assessment of the crime scene."
"Once a cop, always a cop," she said. "I want in on this one."
"You'll be kept in the loop," said The Director. "However, right now you
need to get back to DC. Your team will need you and I need you."
Ally nodded. She was about to say something when she broke down in
tears. The Director pulled her close and held her as she sobbed.
When she regained her composure she stammered out an apology.
"No need to apologize, Ally. I wish I had the latitude to show my
emotions sometimes. Special Agent Davis was a fine agent and he'll be
missed."
Ally nodded. "Thank you, sir."
Chapter 17
Robert flew back to DC with Ally.
"Have you ever lost one?" she asked.
Robert nodded. "I've lost six since I entered law enforcement and no I
never have forgotten them."
"Joe deserved better," she said softly. "So where do we start on finding
who did this?"
"We did catch one break; it looks like Jenny wounded one of them," he
said.
Ally looked at him. "Good."
"We suspect that Joe and Jenny arrived as the hit team was cleaning up
the scene. They had to leave faster than they planned and we've finding
a lot of evidence. We know that there were at least three, most likely
Eastern-European judging by the shell casings and cigarette butts we
found. They will make it slightly easier to identify them. We believe
they left the scene in a van; several neighbors saw one parked in the
driveway."
"They still got a big head start," said Ally.
Robert nodded. "We've brought in Steve and Spec-Ops to assist with the
manhunt."
"I doubt they would drive directly south or take the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge," said Ally. "If I was them I would head to I-95. It would easier
to blend in or to catch a flight out. I would also check all ships
leaving port."
"We've already done that and more," said Robert.
"Of course," she replied. "What about the mole?"
"I don't think that the mole was involved with this. It's pretty obvious
that the hit team was caught by surprise."
"I agree," said Ally. "The question is why was Simons targeted?"
Chapter 18
As soon as they landed, Ally headed straight to her department. The
first person she saw was Donna.
"What do you want us to do?" asked Donna. Her eyes were red from crying.
Ally hugged her. "Go home."
"We want to help," said Martin, one of Donna's recruits.
"The Agency is doing everything humanly possible to catch the people
that did this. I know you're all hurting, but there's nothing you can do
right now. Please, go home and try and get some rest," she said.
"Ally's right," said Donna.
The agents slowly turned and headed out the door.
"How are you doing, Donna?" asked Ally.
"I'm a wreck. I feel like this is my fault," she said.
"It's not your fault," replied Ally. She briefed Donna on the case.
"Have you called Ed?"
Donna nodded. "He's on his way here to take me home."
Ally nodded. "That's good."
"What about you?" asked Donna. "Have you called Carol?"
Ally shook her head. "Not yet, but I'm sure she knows."
"Do it now," said Donna. "That's an order. The Director gave me the
authority to pull rank on you this one time if you don't."
Ally smiled back. "Thanks."
Chapter 19
Carol was already home by the time Ally pulled into the driveway of
their townhouse.
Ally walked in and was immediately hugged by Carol.
"Don't let go," whispered Ally as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I won't," replied Carol softly. "Not until you're ready."
Chapter 20
"Is everyone in place?" asked Steve Williams over his headset.
"Team one in place," replied Tom.
"Team two in place," replied Madison.
"Sniper in place," replied Jackson.
"Backup in place," replied Joe.
"All teams standby," replied Steve.
Two hours earlier a Virginia State Trooper spotted a van that matched
the description of the one used in Norfolk in the parking lot of a motel
just south of Fredericksburg. Within thirty minutes Steve's team was
setting up a perimeter.
The hotel manager described the man who checked in as having a heavy
foreign accent. Additional surveillance determined that the room had
three men in it.
The room was at the end of the building on the first floor. This made
Steve's assault easier.
Tom was able to conduct a search of the van and discovered bloody
dressings, which confirmed that at least one of the suspects was
wounded.
Another thing working in Steve's favor was the fact the motel was almost
empty. The room next to the suspects' room was now occupied by a
surveillance team. They confirmed that three heavily armed men were in
the room. One was wounded in the left shoulder. They also heard the men
talking in Russian.
The plan was for a fast assault into the room. Steve decided to wait
until three AM so that the suspects would either be asleep or very
tired. Flash-bang grenades would be thrown into the room prior to the
assault teams as the goal was to capture as many of the suspects as
possible.
Steve had to emphasize this to his team during the briefing. "Look, I
know they killed one agent and wounded another, but we need them alive."
"Can we kill at least one of them?" asked Madison.
Steve shook his head. "I want them all alive. Get in quickly and subdue
them. Also check them completely. I don't want any of them taking the
easy way out with a little black capsule."
The van was disabled and a perimeter set in the slight possibility that
any of the suspects made it out of the room.
Steve looked at his watch. "All teams; commence assault in one minute."
Chapter 21
Ally was awakened at four in the morning by the insistent ringing of a
telephone on the nightstand.
"Ally, this is Steve, we got them."
She sat up in bed immediately wide awake. "All of them?"
"Yes, we have three in custody. By the way, your agent did get one of
them," he replied.
"Tell me what happened," she said.
Steve described the assault briefly. As expected, the suspects were
asleep when the door was knocked in and the grenades tossed in. Tom and
Madison's teams followed a few seconds later. None of the suspects were
able to get to their weapons. The weapons matched the type used in the
shootings.
"We immediately separated them," said Steve. "So far none of them seem
to understand English...or any language for that matter. However, we
have a lot of evidence that ties them to the scene of the crime."
"Does the press know yet?" asked Ally.
"Robert will be making the official announcement at 8," said Steve.
"Thank you," she said.
"I wish we could have let you know ahead of time, but we couldn't wait,"
apologized Steve.
"I'm just glad you got them," said Ally. "Have a cold one for me."
"Will do," he replied. A Spec-Ops tradition was to have a cold beer or
two after a successful assault.
Chapter 22
Ally arrived at the office and immediately went to Robert Ledyard's
office.
He waved her in.
Ally handed him a cinnamon bun. "I figured you've been here all night
and would need something to eat."
He nodded as he took a bite of the pastry.
"Steve called me last night," said Ally.
Robert nodded as he took a sip of his coffee.
"What do we know about the men in custody?"
"None of them are talking, but they all have tattoos that identify them
as being members of the Russian Mafia. Their weapons are Russian
military and were equipped with silencers, just as you thought. They
also had cop-killer bullets in their clips."
Ally nodded. "I figured that when I saw the holes in the vests."
"We think they were brought in specifically for this hit. From what
we've learned from the paperwork we found in the van they were supposed
to escape on a cargo ship that was due to leave Norfolk this morning.
The wounding of one of their team forced them to change plans and we
suspect they were heading to New York City."
"So they were just hired for the hit," said Ally.
"That's what it looks like. I doubt they know anything, but we'll keep
working on them. I hope that the realization that they're facing a death
sentence will make at least one talk."
"It's obvious that they didn't expect Joe and Jenny to show up and it's
unlikely they knew who they were," said Ally.
Robert nodded.
"But why was Simons and his production team killed? Even that idiot of a
detective would have eventually realized that it wasn't done by one man.
It was a message, but for who?" said Ally.
"Our agents are reviewing Simons's notes and tapes," said Robert.
Ally scratched her head. "A hit like this would take time to plan out."
"Do you think Simons was dirty?"
Ally nodded. "It's worth looking into."
"I agree," he replied. "It's too bad you're so damn good at your current
job."
"I can be reassigned," said Ally.
Robert shook his head. "Not likely."
"Can I ask a favor?"
Robert looked at her as he finished off his bun. "Depends."
"Can I skip the whole press thing? I know that these were my agents, but
I don't need to talk to some reporters asking me stupid questions."
"That's acceptable," he replied.
"I also want to help on this investigation," said Ally.
"I'll keep you in the loop," said Robert.
"That's it?" she asked.
Robert leaned back in his chair. "We have a full court press on this
one, Ally. It's our number one priority. However, if you can find the
time to stop by here every morning...and bring in a cinnamon bun...we
can discuss the case."
Ally nodded. "That's a deal."
"Good," he replied. He looked at his watch. "We have a meeting with The
Director in five minutes."
"Thanks for the heads up," she replied as she stood up.
Chapter 23
"The memorial service will be in two days," stated The Director. "Ally,
I would like you to say a few words."
Even though it was stated as a request, Ally knew it was for all
practical purposes a direct order. She didn't mind as she wanted to do
it.
"I know this may be difficult for you, but it's important for a leader
to set the tone," he continued.
"I understand, sir," replied Ally. "I would be my honor to speak."
The Director nodded in approval. "Agent Sullivan continues to show
improvement."
"I have no doubt she will pull though," said Ally.
"I agree," he replied. "Now, while I'm pleased that the three shooters
are in custody, they were just the weapon. Why was a schlock artist like
Simons executed? I refuse to use the word 'reporter' to describe him. I
know Edward R Murrow would be spinning over in his grave if I did."
Robert looked at Ally and nodded.
"Revenge," said Ally.
The Director nodded. "You may speak freely here."
"A hit like this was done to send a message. While I have no proof...my
gut tells me he was dirty," said Ally. She felt uncomfortable telling
her theory without any evidence.
"I agree with Ally," said Robert. "I recommend we start an investigation
of Greg Simons past...but I also recommend that we use unofficial
sources."
The Director nodded. "I agree. We know that there's a traitor in the
organization and we can't risk them upsetting this investigation. I
think you know who I have in mind, Robert."
"I'll call him as soon as we leave here," said Robert.
The Director shook his head. "Call him now. If he gives you any
grief...put me on the line."
Robert nodded and pulled out his cell phone.
Chapter 24
"Have you met Max Bowie, Ally?" asked The Director.
Ally nodded. "A couple of times. I've also read some of his old case
studies; I think he's the perfect choice for this sort of
investigation."
"Robert, please take care of all the logistics and provide Max with
whatever he needs...covertly of course," said The Director.
"I'll do it personally," replied Robert.
"So outwardly we will investigate the hit team, while Max checks out
Simons," said Ally.
The Director nodded. "Ally, I need to discuss some things with Robert.
Again, I want to extend my condolences for the loss of your agent."
Ally stood up and thanked him. She then left, wondering what else was
going on.
Chapter 25
Ally sat at her desk and reviewed Joe's file in order to write her
comments for the memorial service.
He had been one of the agents that she had personally recruited. He had
impressed her from the beginning. Then came that awful day when they had
to tell him he was HIV positive. As expected he bounced back from this
set back, but not before telling Ally that he was transgendered.
Ally suddenly felt a wave of rage towards the hit team and whoever had
hired them. They had taken the life of a wonderful man.
As Ally sipped her Diet Coke and read the file she began to rub her
right shoulder.
"I haven't seen you do that it a long time," said Donna as she stood in
the doorway.
Ally looked up. "Force of habit."
She had grown used to the pain and stiffness in her shoulder where she
had been wounded by a serial killer. He had actually thrust a large
hunting knife through her shoulder which had almost killed her.
"We just got this from Norfolk and I thought you'd want to see it
immediately," said Donna.
"What is it?" asked Ally was she motioned Donna inside.
"Robert dropped this off for you. He said he would have done it in
person but he had to see The Director," explained Donna as she handed
Ally a closed folder.
Ally took it and began to read it. She stopped halfway through and
looked up at Donna. "My god!"
"What?" asked Donna.
Ally handed her the report as she wiped away a tear. "It's Jenny's
statement about what happened in Norfolk."
Donna read it and gasped.
"Joe really died a hero's death," said Ally as she reached for the box
of tissues on her desk.
According to the report, when Joe and Jenny entered the house, Joe saw
the hit men and that they already had their weapons out and were about
to shoot. Without hesitation, Joe shielded Jenny to save her life.
"Please call everyone together," said Ally as she wiped away her tears.
"They deserve to know this before anyone else hears about it."
Chapter 26
Ally sat in on the briefing to update The Director on the shootings.
We've uncovered a lot of evidence that ties Greg Simons to the sexual-
slave trade," announced Frank Smith, an agent assigned to the
investigation. There was a slight smile on his face.
"Define a lot," said Robert, who was not smiling.
He looked at his notes. "Um, we have discovered bank records, emails,
photographs, videos, and travel records," continued Frank. "It will take
us some time to go through all of it, but it looks pretty cut and dried
that Simons was dirty."
Ally looked at Robert, who shook his head slightly as if to tell her to
keep quiet.
"Thank you," said The Director. "I want a complete report on my desk as
soon as possible."
The Director got up and left, followed by the other agents. The only two
who were left in the briefing room were Ally and Robert.
"What the hell was that?" asked Ally as she got up and closed and locked
the door.
Robert smiled back. "What do you mean?"
"All that so called evidence...it's all a little too easy if you ask
me," she said.
Robert nodded. "Do you think it was planted to confuse and mislead us?'
"Yes I do and so do you," replied Ally. "You know as well as I do that
Max Bowie found the same stuff. He said that it usually took him a lot
of digging to find evidence like that. Somebody is trying to feed this
load of crap to us on a silver platter, Robert."
"Well, if someone took the time and effort to put all this together then
the least we can do is take the bait," replied Robert. "We will make
sure that this information reaches the press and see what happens.
What's the matter, Ally, did you think I was getting soft?"
Ally laughed. "Of course not."
"It's good to see you laugh again. I know losing an agent is hard, but
you have to move on. In our line of work people die; thankfully not as
many as in the past...but people die. You learn from it and try to
prevent it from happening again and you try to catch and prosecute the
people that did it...but you can't let it eat you up."
Ally nodded. "Thank you."
"So are you ready for the memorial service?"
"As much as I can be," she replied.
"These ceremonies are necessary...they allow us to honor the fallen and
allow closure for everyone else. Joe's name will be on the wall of the
entrance and he will never be forgotten by those who served with him."
"I look at those names every time I walk in the building," said Ally.
"So do I. I also knew many of the people who are memorialized on that
wall."
"It can't be easy," said Ally.
Robert nodded. "No it's not, but it gives me strength to do the job... I
owe it to them."
"I like the sound of that," she replied. "I may include that in my
speech."
"I think it would be very fitting."
Chapter 27
Ally sat at her desk and stared at a yellow legal pad on her desk. It
was filled with notes and lists. She had also written questions on
another sheet of paper.
Her instinct told her that the shooting of Simons and his crew was a red
herring. She had investigated enough people in the sex trade and she
couldn't remember a case where all the evidence against them had been so
nicely packaged. Hell, she thought, the computer files weren't even
password protected.
The question was who was really behind this and why would they want
Simons dead.
Originally she suspected that the shooting of Joe and Jenny wasn't part
of the plan. They were the victims of bad timing. If they had arrived at
the house twenty minutes later they would have discovered a bizarre
crime scene. That didn't make her less angry about the shootings.
However, she was now convinced that the shootings were an attempt to
distract and mislead The Agency. The killing of Greg Simons was now
national news and there was a lot of pressure to solve the crime. Even
Congress was getting involved demanding a quick investigation. This was
causing The Agency to direct an extraordinarily large amount of assets
to solving the case so much, in fact, that a little over fifty percent
of the staff was tied up investigating leads.
Then a chill ran up her spine...maybe Joe and Jenny's arrival at the
scene was planned. What better way to distract The Agency than to kill
some agents? She had no proof, but the more she thought about it the
more sense it made.
She then wrote a list of people that knew Joe and Jenny were going to
Norfolk. In addition to Donna, Molly, Robert, and herself, there were
other names. The trip wasn't exactly a secret and many other people at
The Agency could have known about it...including the traitor.
Of course she didn't have any proof...just her instinct and that wasn't
enough to go to Robert. No, she would wait and watch and hopefully
something else would come to light. She would also talk to Carol about
her theory.
Chapter 28
Ally was dressed in a dark navy colored suit for the service. For the
most part it was a blur to her and the consolation she got was that Joe
would have found it all very humorous.
"Thank you, Agent Burns," said Joe's mother. "Joe always talked very
highly of you."
Ally smiled back. "I thought the world of him too."
His mother pulled Ally aside. "We really appreciate the way you handled
his...illness and well, other things."
Ally nodded.
Mrs. Davis looked at the wall, which now had her son's name carved into
it.
"He loved being an agent," she said. "I know this sounds clich?d, but
this is the way he would have wanted to go. His greatest fear was
getting sick and slowly fading away from his illness."
Ally just nodded, not really knowing what to say.
Mrs. Davis then looked at the medal of valor that The Director had
presented her.
"This was unexpected," she said.
"It's the least we could do...considering what he did," said Ally.
"Thank you again for everything," said Mrs. Davis.
Without a word, Ally gave her a long hug.
Chapter 29
After the ceremony, Ally and her agents gathered at a local bar. It was
considered one of the safest bars in the area as it was a favorite
watering hole for the agents. In fact the owner, Neil Harrison was a
retired agent.
Steve had recommended the post ceremony gathering.
"You need to let them blow off some steam," he told her. "Let them tell
some stories and reminisce. It's good for the soul."
Ally had originally planned to have a couple of drinks and then leave,
but she couldn't pull herself away.
Most of the people there were from her department, along with a few
other chosen agents. As the drinks began to pour, the agents began to
loosen up and tell stories about Joe. The stories soon had people
laughing hysterically.
Carol came in and sat down next to Ally.
"How're you feeling?" asked Carol.
"Better. Steve was right, this is a great way to remember Joe," replied
Ally.
Carol smiled back. "I agree. By the way, you were terrific today."
"I'll have to take your word for it, I barely remember what I said,"
replied Ally. "I hope that's the only time I ever have to do that."
"I know what you mean, but if it happens again, I know you will do what
has to be done."
Ally nodded as she took another sip of her beer. She would have
preferred wine, but it was Joe's favorite drink.
"How's Jenny doing?" asked Carol.
"Better every day. She said that she can't wait to get back to work,"
said Ally.
"Sounds like someone I know," said Carol who leaned over and gave Ally a
kiss.
Slowly the crowd filtered out and Ally went up to the bartender to
settle the accounts.
"How much?" she asked.
The bartender shook his head. "Nothing, it's been taken care of."
Ally cocked her head. "What do you mean?"
The bartender pointed his thumb at the owner.
Ally thanked him and headed over to Neil.
He took a special pride in the fact that he knew the names of all the
agents who came into his place. The stocky gray-haired man put up his
hands and smiled. "Sorry Agent Burns, but the tab has been picked up
along with the tip."
Ally shook her head. "Neil, it's very thoughtful, but I can't let you do
that."
"I didn't pay for it...the old man did," replied Neil with a grin.
"The Director?" asked Ally.
"Who else," he replied. "He's always been one of the good ones."
Chapter 30
While Ally was pleased that Robert briefed her regularly on the case,
she was annoyed that she wasn't directly involved. Robert told her that
she already had enough on her plate as it was. There were times when she
wished that she was just a regular agent and not a department head.
She popped open the top her third Diet Coke as she reviewed her monthly
status reports from all her offices. As they were all doing such an
excellent job The Agency was contemplating adding another regional
department.
Ally's paperwork was interrupted by the delivery of her mail. She was
surprised to see a personal letter in the stack of official mail. She
looked at the return address and saw it was from Joe's mother.
Dear Agent Burns,
I just wanted to thank you again for everything you did
for my child. I always knew that Joe was different although I never
suspected he wanted to be a woman. Looking back it makes sense and I can
only wonder how our lives would have been like if we had known. I know
that you eased his mind and allowed him to do the job he loved so much.
After meeting you at the memory service I can understand why Joe thought
so highly of you. I also sensed something else, that you will do
everything possible to catch the people that caused Joe's death.
Thank you,
Deborah Davis
Ally read the letter twice before putting it down. She debating writing
a reply, but decided to wait until she had some news on the case.
Ally was about to start up with the reports again when two agents
appeared outside her office. Ally didn't know them but they had the look
of security personnel. She could make out the slight bulge of their
weapons under their coats.
"Yes?" she asked as she looked at them.
"Sorry to interrupt you, Special Agent Burns, but we have orders to
escort you," said the first agent.
"Escort me where?" she asked, slightly annoyed.
"It's for your own safety," said the second.
"You must be joking," she replied. "I'm not going anywhere and I'm not
in any danger."
The two agents looked at each other, not sure what to do next.
Ally was a bout to pick up her phone to call Robert when Steve Williams
showed up.
"Steve, are these yours?" she asked.
"Yes. Now, please come with me, Ally," said Steve.
Now Ally was worried, but she trusted Steve and she got up and grabbed
her bag.
"Bring your coat too," he said. "Oh, and lock up your office."
"This better be important," she replied.
Steve just nodded.
Chapter 31
Ally was escorted out of her office and taken to one of the secure
briefing rooms.
"What's going on?" she asked.
Steve looked at the two men and ordered them outside. He then closed the
door.
"Margo Simon just escaped," he said.
Ally stared back. "How?"
"She was taken to the local hospital complaining of heart pain. The
prison doctor said that she was having a heart attack. On the way to the
hospital she escaped."
"Wasn't she being escorted?" asked Ally.
Steve nodded. "Three guards were killed."
"And the ambulance crew?"
"They appear to have been in on the escape," said Steve,
"What makes you think that?" she asked.
Steve handed Ally a folder. "Look at the photo of the EMT."
Ally looked at security photos and saw an Asian woman in the uniform of
an EMT."
"It's Dr. Liang," said Steve.
"Shit," replied Ally. "So why am I here?"
"The Director ordered it for your safety. If it makes you feel any
