Eight men carried her majesty, who stood upon her private caravan. An
entourage of guards surrounded the conveyance at all sides. The guards
brandished their swords, not menacingly, but with just enough authority
that no one opposed her passage down the crowded street; and the street
was crowded. Many people assembled, all seeking a glimpse of their
Queen.
I stood a good 20 paces from the caravan. The people who love the Queen
most will try to get close, those who are suspicious of her stay out of
earshot, though not much can be heard in a roaring crowd. I find that
20 paces is ideal if your goal is to hear the local gossip.
Gossip 1: "She certainly is elegant and regal. You can tell that our
Queen bears noble blood."
Gossip 2: "You tell false dear Gertrude. I heard from Mildred the
washwoman who overheard from her masters neighbor what the Queens true
story is."
Gossip 1: "Do tell."
Gossip 2: "She is a widow five times over. Each husband was of higher
social standing than the last."
Gossip 1: "No! Goodness, you make her sound like some sort of pagan
Enchantress."
Gossip 2: "Bind your fool tongue. Talk like that will get you into the
stocks."
Gossip 1: "And your talk won't you old dingbat."
Her Majesty was on her way back to the castle. I followed by more
pedestrian means. I wanted the people to believe that their Prince was
still abroad. I entered the castle through the secret passage and did
shed my false beggars robes. Should I be forced to take violence
against my stepmother it is best I maintain an alibi.
Soon I was in the castle garden. I saw my father upon a lawn chair and
made my way to him. "Father I have returned."
No response. I moved a finger across his eyes, but the King remained
unresponsive. Then I took his hand in mine and gave a small squeeze.
For a second I thought he had squeezed back, but the sensation left as
quickly as it had come. "I'm going to save you Father."
A guard saw me. At first he raised his spear, but then he tossed it
aside and opened his arms in embrace. "My Prince," he declared.
It was Mercutio, my dear friend. We spent many a day practicing with
wooden sword in this very garden under my fathers tutelage. In the old
days he always bested me. Perhaps when this is over we could cross
swords again.
I returned his embrace, then asked how my Father has been doing.
Mercutio lowered his voice to a whisper. "Some days are better than
others. It seems he can only be roused by will of the Queen."
"Don't call her that."
Mercutio escorted me to his cabin on the grounds. He shared it with
many other soldiers but they were all on duty. It was only by grace of
the Prince that he could leave his post.
The Queen had replaced most of the guards he had known since youth with
men whose loyalties were to herself. Mercutio only remained because the
Prince had once begged saying that he was like a second son to the King.
"Have wine with me." Mercutio said.
"No."
"You intend to confront the Queen. Drink for courage. Besides whatever
she offers is libel to be poisoned."
We did share a drink.
I made my way to the throne room, and up a red carpet. She sat three
steps and and raised seat above me in my fathers throne. I swallowed
deeply, buried my pride and kneeled before her.
"Theo, you have returned. Does this mean you have slain the Dragon."
Theo is my name by the way, Prince Theodore Lasahara. Again I
swallowed. "I survived the Dragon. It is no matter that the beast
lives for I have attained that which you sent me for." From my breast
pocket I removed a vial of that which the Dragon protected; Water from
the fountain of youth, enough to take twenty years of a persons life.
Now I raised my voice. "Release my father from his bewitchment and
leave this land as you swore you would."
"My Theodore you've become so forceful, such a man. You're noting like
the delicate scholar you were when I first came to this country." She
gently brushed her hand against my cheek, then walked behind me and blew
into my ear before gracefully circling back around.
"If you do not follow your word then I will smash this vial upon the
ground. Your enchantments have no power over me witch."
She giggled. "Give me the vial," commanded the witch, and I did.
Why had I done that? The wine I shared with Mercutio. She requires a
potion to control someone. No Mercutio wouldn't....
I awoke to have the suns light beading down upon me. At first I was
weak and tempted to stay in the soft bed were I lay. Then the panic set
in. My chest was heavy my body was different in a million unprecievable
ways. Feeling only softness as I probed with my dainty hands I looked
around the room and spotted a large vanity mirror. I rushed toward the
mirror. In the mirror was something that horrified me at first, but how
could I feel horror even for a moment? It was so beautiful. It was the
face of the witch.
For over an hour I stood there admiring my refection. The auburn locks
that stretched to the small of my back, The flawless complexion of my
creamy white skin. If there was any manliness left in me I used it to
admire the bosom. It was so soft and sensitive to the touch, yet pert
with no sag.
Three days later in walked the Queen. Only now she was younger. She
couldn't have been more than fourteen. She was beautiful, like me, but
in a more girlish way. her frame was petit and her breasts no more than
an A-cup. She told me that she had taken the water from the fountain of
youth. How foolish I thought. Not long ago she looked as I do now.
Why would anyone give that up.
Apparently she wasn't even satisfied with her own kingdom. Her plan was
to claim that she had a daughter, Violet, who was being educated abroad,
then she would become this daughter. She intended to go to foreign
lands and unite this kingdom through marriage with another Prince. When
the Prince came of age he would be a puppet with which to rule a larger
Kingdom. Perhaps she would pick a nation with a strong military and use
it to conquer the world.
She needed water from the fountain of youth to become younger, but it
was in her power to age me, Prince Theo, to her former age and make me
her physical double. I was to rule the kingdom in her absence. As if I
could be bothered by such things. The witch claimed that this mirror I
am looking into is enchanted. It is the mirror of Narcissus, and it
makes any who look into it fall in love with there own refection. She
thought it would help me adjust to my new form.
Witch: "So you like your new form."
"Of course."
The witch smirked. "If you had to choose between your beauty and your
father what would you choose."
"Beauty"
"What about the Kingdom?"
"Beauty, of course."
"Do you care about them at all anymore."
"No, I only care about myself."
The mirrors spell was a success. Vanity had turned the Prince utterly
selfish. Only his heart could resist the final transformation, and that
was no longer a problem. She placed her hands upon the Princes temples
and began chanting in a long forgotten language.
In her minds eyes the Prince had a vision. Multitudes of people
gathered to cheer her. She wore the most fashionable dress, the most
exquisite jewels, and of course she was beautiful. She needed their
love. Being beautiful wasn't enough, everyone had to know that she was.
It didn't matter that she felt nothing but contempt for them, they still
had to love her. If taxes had to be raised just to pay for her clothes
then that worthless King could get off his lazy ass and announce it, but
if there was good news she would give it to them, then they could love
her even more. At that point she new, she always was and could only be
Princess Lillia Lasahara.
A few days later an announcement was made that Princess Violet was
traveling to Greece were she was to become a marriage candidate to King
Alexander. The new Queen fumed. The people were giving Violet more
attention than they gave her. Queen Lasahara rolled her eyes when the
King placed his arm upon her shoulder. She would have to find some way
to cause a relapse of his illness, before the fossil wanted to start
having relations.
Hands behind her back Queen Lasahara placed a few drops of onion extract
on her finger then rubbed her eyes so she could cry for the insolent
pest. In tears she pulled her daughter into an embrace and told her
once more she didn't have to go. On Que. the King gave a nod for the
slave girl (formerly Mercutio) to pull her away. The crowd was eating
up her performance. With a tearful and overacted goodbye Violet entered
the armed caravan and departed the kingdom.
Queen Lillia Lasahara could not explain why, but she very very relieved.
