Merry-Go-Round
by Eric and Dale
Prelude
Beautiful young Meredith Macintyre was used to people staring at her.
After all, she had been the first runner up in the Miss Massachusetts
contest eight years ago when she had been twenty. But this was somehow
different. She felt somehow like a small animal with a bird of prey
circling overhead.
Meredith looked around and saw nothing but a bustling Boston street,
and yet -
A watcher in the shadows smiled. The girl was perfect for their
'little' club. And maybe - but that was a thought for the future. She
smiled again and it was not a nice smile. Not nice at all. But then the
watcher had always thought niceness was greatly overrated.
Chapter one
When Meredith (Merry to her friends) got home from her job as cost
manager for Johnson and Company she found her cartoonist husband Tim
bubbling over with excitement. "I think I may have found us a house!"
Meredith's beautiful brown eyes lit up. "Where, and how much?"
"It's twenty miles outside Boston, but right on the commuter train line
in the old town of Hawthorne."
"I thought that was a high rent area?"
"So did I! But it seems time change. Anyway, it's a rehab - a
townhouse, and we won't have to pay taxes on it for ten years! It seems
the town is again losing residents and they're looking for young
professionals to move in. Also, the real estate firm owner is a fan of
my comic book hero 'Mr. Amazing!' and he dropped the price by a third
if I will allow my name in the town advertising." He grinned, and his
handsome face gave him the look of a mischievous smile. "Can you
believe it? They want to put up signs at the town entrance: 'HOME OF
MR. AMAZING'?"
Meredith smiled indulgently at her husband's usual infectious
enthusiasm. He was so damned cute and charming. It reminded her of why
she married him and still loved him so much.
"OK, it does sound wonderful, dear. Let's go see it. But I am rather
skeptical. It sounds almost too good to be true."
Meredith was impressed. The real-estate owner himself met them at the
train station. First he showed them around the charming old town.
Meredith grinned when she saw a few signs saying, 'Witches Welcome
Here'! The smile made her face even lovelier.
It sure charmed Mr. Hampshire. Meredith grinned inside. Boy, was he
checking out her long, lovely legs.
When Meredith saw the house it took her breath away. "We can't afford
this!" she involuntarily exclaimed.
Hampshire smiled with his bluff, hardly salesman personality. "Don't
worry about it. The price I quoted holds firm. Frankly, the last person
who owned the house defaulted on the loan which now fell back on us.
The bank isn't happy. Even selling at a loss gets if off the books and
at least generates a positive rather than a negative cash flow.
Frankly, not many people want to live here. It's not exciting enough
for yuppies, and older people want smaller and in Florida; people with
kids want a more family type house with a yard. Also, I and my wife and
the Mayor are all fans of your comic, Tim. It will help the town shed a
stodgy image. Hawthorne hardly has a distinguished history. The best we
can be obscurely known for is that in this town we kept out heads
during the witch hysteria and DIDN'T hang witches the way they did in
Salem. No doubt that was unpleasant for those living there, but in the
present," he gave a rueful laugh, "it's great for the tourist trade and
property values there!"
Meredith loved the house. Inside it was extremely up to date and well
designed. It was a little larger than they needed, but that was better
than too small. A major bonus was that at the top there was an artist
studio. Tim was enraptured. "It's perfect, Merry!" he said, kissing
her.
She retuned the kiss with pleasure. She loved her husband so much.
Meredith checked the paperwork and found everything Mr. Hampshire said
was true. Meredith shook her head. Tax abatement and all, everything
was marvelous. Tim always deferred to her on these matters as she was
an MBA and an accountant, but he kept smiling and saying he loved the
studio.
They bought the house.
A week later they were settled in. It was a little longer commute than
before but she could do much of her work on the train with her laptop
and it involved no more driving. Meredith even had the bright idea of
selling her BEMER and saving on insurance and getting some capital as
they would hardly need two cars here! Tim would drive her and pick her
up from the station or if he was 'inspired' with the amazing adventures
of Mr. Amazing she could take a cab or in good weather even walk.
She received in an invitation from Sophia Hampshire, the wife of the
mayor, for a ladies tea Saturday. Meredith was hardly thrilled, but she
was determined to be on good terms with the neighbors and town elite.
Since this was to be a typical female summing up, Meredith dressed with
care. She looked in the mirror satisfied. She was still the same woman
who had won beauty contests. She hoped the other women wouldn't hold it
too much against her. Her face and figure were faultless. The makeup
was right, not too much, and not too little.
Meredith was impressed with Sophia's mansion. The rumor mill had it
that she had married a rich old man who very considerately died soon
afterwards and left her very rich. Now Sophia was married to the mayor.
Meredith's eyes almost popped out of her head when she saw the maid who
opened Sophia's door! She was dressed as a French maid just like in the
movies. She wore a short frilly skirt, net stockings, maid's cap and
heels.
"Madam and the others are awaiting you in the main salon, Mrs.
Macintyre. My name is Mimi!" she said with a pronounced French accent.
Meredith did not like the smiles that greeted her on entering. They had
an almost predatory air.
Sophia introduced everyone. First there was her sister in law Susan
Hampshire, she was the wife of the president of the real estate company
and it was her money everyone said was behind the company. Meredith
immediately put her down as a bitch from her cold smile and burning
eyes. Meredith put her age around 42 and she was fairly attractive with
a slim figure.
A woman in a sheriff's uniform as the next one introduced. "This is our
esteemed sheriff, Victoria 'Tori' Bulwark."
Meredith smiled politely. 'My god, the woman is an Amazon,' she noted.
Tori was over 6 feet tall and heavily muscled. She would make even an
NFL lineman polite around her. Meredith found out later her husband was
an over the road truck driver. She didn't blame him for wanting to get
away!
Then came Natalie Greenwood. She was the Town's head librarian. Natalie
was maybe a few years older than Meredith. She was an average looking
woman with intelligent eyes. She smiled kindly and said, "It's so nice
to meet you, Meredith! I've already met your husband. He loves the
library! You're so lucky! I find Tim a real charmer."
Meredith smiled and thanked her. She sure wasn't worried about this
woman stealing Tim away from her! Besides Tim being rock faithful,
Natalie hardly could compete with her!
Susan spoke and her voice was cold and hard. "Our dear Natalie's family
is Hawthorne's oldest - they founded the town."
Natalie laughed, "Please don't hold that against me, Meredith,
especially if you have problems with the narrow streets."
Meredith laughed back.
"Careful, Merry," Sophia said with a laugh, "once Natalie starts
talking about her family history, she won't quit."
Mimi served them tea and some mouth watering desserts. It seemed Mimi's
husband was Sophia's French chef.
Then Sophia leaned confidently forward. "Meredith, we would like you to
join our amusing little club."
"Oh?" said Meredith, wondering how she was going to get out of it. She
hated bridge!
But she was fooled and her mouth dropped when Sophia said, "All the
women here including our dear sexy French Maid are in it. Once a month
we swap husbands."
Meredith looked at them. They were serious! 'Welcome to Puritan New
England,' she thought! Meredith cleared her throat and politely
refused.
It did not go down well. But nothing more was said about the club.
Later, when Tim asked her how it went, Merry never told him about their
offer. It would just go to his head.
A few days later, Meredith and Tim's house was broken into. They had
come home after he picked her up at the train depot to find the door
had been smashed in.
Meredith cried - her inland ivory grooming set from her grandmother was
stolen as well as her jewelry. Her laptop was gone, as well as a TV and
Tim's baseball card collection. She sure hoped the thieves wouldn't be
able to crack her laptop's security, as important financial information
as well as her private diary was on it.
When Tori came out to investigate, she was apologetic. "Burglaries are
unusual here. We'll do out best to recover your stuff. Just be glad
that your house wasn't trashed like they sometimes are by robbers."
Meredith hardly felt better knowing the criminals were well behaved.
As Tori walked around the house, she turned to Merry and told her that
she thought Tim was very handsome. She wondered what he would be like
in bed, and wished Merry would change her mind. Merry said nothing but
glared at Tori as she leered at her unsuspecting hubby.
Three evenings later, it was the first night of the full moon. Merry
loved it, as the full moon always brought the romantic out in Tim. They
ended the wonderful evening cuddled together under the sheets. Merry
felt happy, little realizing this was going to be the last normal
evening she might ever have.
The next morning Meredith woke up but she wasn't in her own room. What
the -
She looked into an expensive mirror. IMPOSSIBLE! Somehow she was in
Sophia's overripe blonde haired body!
Chapter 2
Meredith looked over at Sophia's (now her) husband. He was about fifty.
He was still somewhat handsome and distinguished, but was developing a
pot belly. She thought of her Tim and wanted to scream, "I've been
robbed!" She didn't, but the thought of Sophia in bed with Tim was
chilling. She wanted to say something, ask - Bob - something, but
couldn't! It was like her mouth was welded shut. But she knew his name
and how much she - Sophia was tired of him.
She hated this new older body and the thought of Sophia in hers made
her murderous.
At breakfast (which was croissant and coffee) served by a knowing Mimi,
she noticed the maid winking knowingly at her. That was odd, she
thought. She began to notice Mimi was acting differently, not her usual
perky self, but a little petulant and surly. She realized it wasn't
Mimi behind those flirty Gallic eyes. Meredith guessed it might be
Tori, who had the same kind of lewd, vulgar behavior.
"Don't forget, Sophia dear, that you have tea with the league of woman
voters at 2," said her new husband. "Now, for god's sake, be sober!"
With an alien voice Meredith found herself answering, "Yes, dear." Bob
leaned over, kissed her, and quickly pinched her boobs before he walked
out with the swagger of a career politician.
Later she tried to question Mimi who only smiled widely, winked and
said, "Someone will tell you the rules soon, 'Madam'."
She hated dressing this older body. It was a very poor trade for her
real one. Sophia was about 15 years older, a few inches shorter, and a
bit chunkier than she had been. She wasn't grotesquely overweight, but
was a full-figured gal. Bob seemed to like the package (whenever he
wasn't having fun with Mimi), but she did not.
In Sophia's Mercedes convertible, she drove too fast to her own house.
A cop started to chase her but backed off when he recognized the car.
At her own door she hammered on it and heard giggling voices coming
down the stairs. Her blood ran cold.
The door opened and there standing blatantly in the doorway was HERSELF
- her own tall beautiful body looking down at this short one. The false
Meredith had her arm around Tim, who of course was oblivious to any
change. It was obvious they had come from having sex. Meredith wanted
to claw that smug smile from the impostor's beautiful stolen face but
it was her own face would be scratching, plus the fact that Sophia in
her body could kick the shit out of Meredith in this one.
"Why, it's Mrs. Van der Beck! Tim, I'd like you to meet our mayor's
wife, Sophie Van der Beck," the false Meredith said as she turned to
'her' husband, smiling.
"Nice to met you, Mrs. Van der Beck," said Tim. They shook hands. It
was agony for Meredith.
Tim did not lie very well. The real Meredith could tell he considered
her without charm and hated to be interrupted while in bed with his
beautiful wife. Meredith glanced at the impostor who winked back,
gloating.
"To what do we owe the honor of this call on a Saturday morning,
Sophia?"
"It's important that we talk!" said Meredith through Sophia's gritted
teeth. "It's about the club."
"Oh, very well. Tim, what time do you want to start work on your new
opus, 'Mr. Amazing against The Terrorist from Titan'?"
Meredith wondered how the impostor knew this.
"Oh, about ten, I guess," came the reply. He squeezed his wife's
slender waist and kissed her behind the ear and 'Meredith' giggled,
pleased.
"How about if we meet for coffee in your house around 10:30? Will that
be okay, Sophia?"
Too overcome to speak, the present Sophia nodded.
The handsome young married couple shut the door in her face. The short
woman on the other side heard them giggling.
"Ready to go back to bed, lover?" purred her own silky voice.
"You bet!" came Tim's enthusiastic response.
Crying, the real Merry ran back to Sophia's car. What could she do? If
she said anything Tim wouldn't believe her! Hell, she hardly believed
it herself and also she somehow felt that she COULDN'T say anything.
The time crawled. Then with an ironic voice Mimi said, "Mrs. Macintyre,
Mrs. Van der Beck."
Meredith's former body came gracefully into the sitting room. She
looked spectacular! Meredith's heart sank...what if this was forever?
Would she ever get her real, beautiful body back, would she ever be in
Tim's arms again? The new Meredith was dressed in a black leather
miniskirt, a red silk blouse and sexy black thigh high boots with spike
heels. She smiled Meredith's charming smile, which then turned to one
of smugness. She sat and crossed her boot clad, world class legs.
"Sophia, I want my body back!" shouted Meredith.
The beautiful woman got back up and admired her world class beauty in
the mirror. She laughed. "I imagine you do. But I'm not Sophia."
"I suppose you're going to tell me you're 'Meredith'!" said the real
Merry scornfully. "Don't play stupid games with me!"
"No, I'm not. I'm not Sophie. She's...elsewhere. I'm here to explain
the rules of our harmless little club, 'SOPHIA'. I am the only one who
can. The rest of you are under a gees to keep it secret."
"I want my body back now, you bitch!"
"And if you don't get it you're going to do what?" She laughed cruelly
at the true Meredith's silence. "That's what I thought. Now listen. The
first night of the full moon, our little club switch bodies and LIVES
with each other. Isn't that right 'Mimi'?"
The French maid in the short skirt and net stockings dipped a curtsy.
"Oui, madam Macintyre."
"The selection is random, even we don't know who will become whom. The
switch lasts only six days!"
"Six days!" exploded Meredith. "I'm expected to live as Sophia and
maybe have sex with her husband for six days?"
The fake Meredith grinned. "Bingo! Now none of us can do anything too
different from the woman we now are. Also, when you become the charming
Mimi you will speak French, and clean and serve."
At her mention, Mimi added, "Also put up with 'my' hot tempered chef of
a husband, but in compensation this body is young and loves sex."
Then the present Meredith grinned wickedly at the original. "By the
way, I really loved having sex with MY Tim this morning!" She sighed.
"He is all I hoped he would be and more. He is so charming! He loves ME
so very much!"
The real Meredith started crying, then sobbed, "But what about my job,
you evil bitch. You can't do my job!"
"Of course I can," the fake laughed Meredith's own tinkling laugh, then
went on to discuss Merry's work flawlessly. "It's another part of the
spell. And the spell works for all of us. For example, think of the tea
you are going to host at 2."
Meredith did, and knew how she would chair it and who would be there
and how they would have to be treated.
Meredith's true self smiled cruelly. "Relax and enjoy the ride, Sophia.
There's nothing you can do about it. Tis true, tis a pity."
"Who are you?"
"Now that would be telling. Well, I can't sit here chanting all day. I
have to go home and make my husband Tim his lunch." She grinned
lasciviously. "Who knows, maybe we will have desert!"
Gracefully she left, the heels of Merry's former boots clicking a
graceful tune.
'Sophie' sobbed with her hands over her middle aged face. She thought
about whoever was in her body. The woman acted like she was in charge
of 'the club'. If it wasn't the real Sophia, then who was it? That icy
bitch Susan was her main suspect, but it could have been the real Mimi,
Tori, or even Natalie.
Merry ended up hosting the tea party. It was just as dull as she
imagined it would be. It became obvious that her part was to smile at
her guests and hold Bob's hand. Her sister-in-law Susan was in
attendance with her husband John, or at least whoever was in Susan's
body at the moment. She lacked the normal icy demeanor. From Sophia's
memories, Merry knew that Susan looked down on her sister-in-law, while
Sophia was more attracted to John than her real husband.
Not that Merry blamed her. Over the next six days, Merry had to give
her new husband sex twice. She assumed this was part of the spell, as
she would have never touched him normally. Also, the next morning she
woke up with a hangover. She had drank way too much the night before.
Shit! As Sophia she had a drinking problem! She had to watch herself
every night from having too much to drink!
As painful as it was, she couldn't resist spying on 'Meredith' and Tim.
She saw them kiss goodbye at the railway station every morning and
often at night he would pick the false Meredith up and they would go
off to Tim's car with their arms around each other. That idiot Tim
didn't notice anything, damn him! She cried herself to sleep. Her new
husband just slept through it.
Somehow, she got through the week.
Merry swore no matter what it took, she'd get revenge on the witch who
did this to her! But who was she?
Chapter 3
If, and as far as Meredith was concerned it was a BIG if, what she had
been told by the false Meredith this should be her last night as Sophia
and tomorrow she would have her own body and life back. She sighed. It
was true; you don't appreciate what you have until you lose it. God,
but she missed her own beautiful body and Tim. As far as Meredith was
concerned, none of the women in the club had lives that were at all
attractive, no greener grass there, only crab grass or weeds.
Meredith fell off the wagon and had too much to drink. As she lay in
bed she cried a little and for the first time in years she prayed.
Please God! Let me wake up as me tomorrow as myself and stop these
horrible changes!
The next morning, Meredith woke up to the most welcome sound in the
world, the sound of an alarm clock. Her own alarm clock! She was in her
own bed, in her own beautiful, young body and lying next to her own
husband. And there was no hangover! She ran delighted fingers over her
own lovely flesh.
'It's great to be back!' she thought. She looked over at Tim and kissed
him! She was still mad at him for not noticing that the woman in her
body had been an impostor, but she still wanted a kiss.
Later over breakfast she noticed Tim seemed sluggish. When she asked
him why, he grinned at her with his usual charming grin, leaned over
and kissed her. "Merry, you really wore me out last week. Not that I'm
complaining, mind you! It was great! It was like a honeymoon all over
again!"
Meredith steamed inside and her fingers curled into claws. She had to
find out who had stolen her body and somehow find a way to stop it from
happening again at the next full moon. She got angrier still when Tim
begged off driving her to the station, saying he was too tired. He had
driven the false Meredith there!
At work none of her co-workers noticed anything different. Was that
good or bad?
But Tim did pick her up at the station at least. Tomorrow was Saturday.
While Tim worked on his Mr. Amazing, she would try and find out more.
At work she had searched the Net and was not surprised to find out
there was no factual information on body switching, just a bunch of
silly web sites.
Saturday morning, Meredith went to Sophia's house. An apologetic Sophia
offered her tea. "Sorry, Meredith, I know how hard it was to wake up in
my body. But I want you know it wasn't my idea for you to join the
club. In fact, you were the only non-volunteer."
"Whose idea was it then?" Meredith asked skeptically.
Sophia grinned with a wan smile. "I can't tell you. Our leader has put
some powerful gees on us and we can't talk about certain things. The
only reason I know it was you in my body was that she told the others
and me. We won't be informed again whose body you will have next. It's
supposed to be random." She pressed her head. "I see you even picked up
my drinking!"
Meredith flushed. "Sorry. I did stop most nights."
Sophia waved it away. "Not your fault. I'm just sorry you got sucked
into this club of nasty bitches! The only reason I joined myself was
because I was bored." She shrugged. "You probably know I'm in love with
my brother-in-law John, (Susan's hubby), and I never really believed it
could actually happen. I felt a little sorry for myself. I'm trapped in
a loveless marriage to someone who looks at me and my money as a
political asset, my sister-in-law treats me like dirt, and my only
friends are the other women in the club! Some friends!" she added
bitterly.
"Well, I want out!" Merry exclaimed.
Sophia smiled sadly. "So do I! But we can't get out. Only our leader
has any real power, and she SAYS the spell is permanent. So you're now
stuck with the rest. You just have to live with it. You'll get used to
it. We all have. That doesn't mean we like it. For example, I really
hate being Tori and Natalie. Being Susan is the best because I love her
husband," she laughed sadly. "But he hates her! She's such a super
bitch!" She eyed Meredith with a predatory air. "To be honest, I am
looking forward to being you, young and beautiful with a handsome,
loving husband."
"I'm going to bring a stop to this evil merry go round of bodies!"
Sophia laughed. "Good luck!"
Meredith went storming out.
'Maybe the local library would have something?' she thought. 'And
Natalie might be willing to help? She was far and away the nicest
person in the club.'
When she reached the library, Natalie smiled a wan smile upon seeing
Meredith and invited her into a private office.
"Let me guess, you want books on witchcraft? I expected you and have
them ready. But they won't help. I've tried."
"Is Susan the witch?" Meredith asked fiercely.
"I can't tell you. None of us will or can. The witch because she won't,
and the rest of us because we can't. I admit I was easy to talk into
it." She shook her head ruefully. "Look at me, a mousy town librarian
with a dull husband and life."
She didn't say anything, but Meredith had to agree. Natalie wasn't just
mousey, she wasn't at all attractive either. She was too thin, and had
the face of a bat. Merry was wondering why they wanted Natalie? Perhaps
it was that she had social position being a descendant of the town
founder, and having a librarian on the town would be useful. Perhaps a
variety of bodies and lives were also what the witch looked for?
"Sorry I can't be of more help. You have no choice but to live with it
like the rest of us."
"I'm not going to! I will find a way!"
"Good luck!"
Natalie was right, the books were no help. They were mostly new age
hokum. Merry did notice that some said for spells to work, they needed
personal items owned by the victim and part of her hair. This explained
the break-in. Merry bet that Tori, the person who investigated it,
actually perpetrated the crime!
During the week Meredith found herself growing angry with Tim. First,
it was three days before he was up to sex. Also, he complained she
wasn't as sweet and loving as before and stopped bringing him tasty
treats to his studio when he was working! Meredith became even more
furious with whoever had her body those six days. It was too weird to
be jealous of - well, yourself!
She visited everyone in the club in turn and every one of them denied
being the witch. Some, like Tori, refused to talk to her at all. Who
was lying? Meredith also couldn't decide who had stolen her body those
six days. She kind of thought it might have been Mimi because of the
sex and the making of those damn tasty treats. But they all also
claimed they didn't know who had really been who except they had all
been told she was Sophia the day they all swapped.
Merry had an idea for the next full moon. She would stay in Boston that
night. Maybe distance would make a difference? She told Tim she had to
stay to work, and he accepted the lie.
Meredith went to sleep in a hotel room and woke up in a small bed with
a man with a bristling mustache. Jumping out of bed, she looked around
the room. There was a set of clothes laid out for her to wear. A very
sexy maid's outfit. Shit! She was Mimi!
Chapter 4
Mimi's husband, now her husband for the nest six days, spoke to Merry
in French as she dressed in Mimi's ridiculous outfit.
"Mimi, I am most tired of living in this town working for these
uncultured barbarians! They are as bad as the English. No one here
speaks French, it is impossible! Why can't we move? Perhaps even return
to France?" He threw up his hands.
Meredith was not surprised to find herself understanding what he said
with ease. It was English that was foreign to her now. This was crazy!
Her head swam. She shook her new small, head with its dark curls. The
answer came to her new brain. "Henri, you know we signed a binding
contract. You were delighted to be paid so much and to escape the grind
of ten hour days in the restaurant."
He snorted with Gallic fervor and his moustache twitched. "True,
Cherie. But it so degrading - we are treated so weirdly here. For
example, the ridiculous uniform you are expected to wear! And sometimes
you act not yourself."
Meredith could not answer this. Feeling like an actor in a bad play,
she dressed in Mimi's scanty uniform. Finished she looked in the mirror
at the body and the clothes she would wear for six days. She saw a
short, curvy, dark haired girl of perhaps twenty-five wearing black
patent leather high heels, net stockings, a short frilly skirt and
silly blouse. Her hair was very dark with short curls and her nose was
a little too big and her skin too oily, Meredith thought critically.
But at least this body was young. She sighed. Her feet hurt and Merry
suspected they would all day.
'I wonder who has my body and life this week?' she wondered, but
doubted she would find out. "Six days," she muttered in French.
"What about six days, Mimi?" asked her husband while shaving.
"Nothing important."
He grabbed her harshly. "Mimi, I am most suspicious of M. Van deer
Beck. Are you sure you do not make extra money by warming the pig's
bed?"
Meredith made herself laugh Mimi's laugh. "Of course not, Cherie. He is
most repulsive to me. I admit he is sometimes too free with his hands,
but what can one do?"
Henri did not look entirely convinced but let her go.
Meredith knew from her new memories that he was correct. Mimi had
dallied with the mayor for jewelry. She shuddered. She wouldn't! She
looked at Henri and hoped she wouldn't have to have sex with him. Even
in Mimi's body she felt like she would be cheating on poor Tim! And the
thought of Tim made her want to cry but she couldn't somehow. Who would
be wearing her body and receiving Tim's love this week? Somehow she'd
find a way to break this evil spell!
Automatically she found herself giving a Gallic shrug and left to serve
Madam her breakfast. The lazy cow was having it in her bed. As Meredith
was carrying the tray, she noticed she was she was walking in the same
exaggerated sexy fashion as Mimi. Yet another reason for her to hate
this form!
Entering the master bedroom, she saw Sophia sitting up...or her body at
least. Ordinarily, Sophia had a moping sort of look on her face.
Whoever was in her body now had a mean, hard glint in her eyes and a
cruel smirk on her lips. She ordered the 'maid' to lay the tray down on
a small table. As she was doing so, 'Sophia' walked up behind her and
whispered in her ear, "So, which one of the girls are you? How do you
like being the maid? I hope you like it as much as I did. Either way,
just remember...your ass is mine!"
To emphasize her point, Sophia pinched Meredith's butt! She laughed as
Merry backed out of the room embarrassed.
Meredith found herself dusting and serving the rest of that day. There
was no chance to see how Tim and her impostor were getting on. Not too
well, she hoped. Maybe the new Meredith would just stay in Boston, but
she heard from a smiling Sophia that 'Mrs. Macintyre' and her husband
were having dinner with Susan. What a nightmare!
That night she found herself eager for sex! Damn this body anyway! But
at least it was young and her new husband was passionate and skillful.
And as Mimi, she found she knew some new sexy tricks in bed.
One afternoon when her husband was sleeping, Meredith found herself
required to have sex with the mayor! He gave her a modest bracelet
afterwards. It was humiliating but the spell made her do it! She felt
so cheap and used!
During dinner that night, she dropped the dinner tray. Henri gave her
an angry look. She quickly cleaned it up, hoping he wouldn't be too
upset. Later, 'Mimi' walked into 'her' quarters when Henri grabbed her!
He screamed at her, saying he had spent a lot of time on the meal and
she had ruined it! He dragged her over to a chair, threw her over his
knees, and proceeded to spank her! It was painful and humiliating, but
yet she found herself becoming aroused! She ended up in bed with the
little brute. As she lay there, she wondered why Mimi stayed with him,
then 'remembered' he had arranged for Mimi to get a green card, and
held it over her head.
Three days later she was called into Sophia's morning room; Meredith
did not like the smile the bitch gave her. She wondered whose soul was
behind it. Her best guess was Susan.
"Do you remember Mrs. Macintyre, Mimi?"
"Oui, Madam." What was the person wearing Sophia's body up to?
"Well, she's just got a big promotion at work as a partner and is
having a party at her house to celebrate. She asked me if she could
borrow you and your husband to cook and serve. I was happy to do so. I
am glad she is doing so well. Aren't you?"
Meredith's new face flushed and her dark eyes flashed. She almost
choked. How had the false Meredith got a big promotion? She had tried
for two years to make partner with not even a glimmer of success. How
in hell did this impostor succeed in being a better her than her?
Her present husband complained all the way over to her former house
about the extra work.
The false Meredith opened the door. God she - I - was beautiful! She
was wearing a breathtaking new evening gown that looked spectacular!
She was so elegant and stylish. What a magnificent gown, and she wore
it with such panache. The present Meredith towered over this petite
4'11" body Merry was stuck in.
'Meredith' smiled 'kindly'. "Ah, Mimi, so kind of you and your husband
to help out," she said in Merry's so-so French.
Henri bowed, overcome with her beauty and also thinking that at least
Madam Macintyre tried to speak a civilized language.
Stunned, the old Merry looked around in wonder.
All her friends and coworkers were there. 'Oh my god, the impostor has
even brought in my mom and dad. And they don't know! Even they don't
know.' Merry felt out like crying. 'Mommy, daddy. It's me, your Merry.
I'm over here.' But she couldn't. Even if she could, she would just be
locked up. It was heartbreaking to be treated like a servant by all of
them and to see the false Merry being admired and congratulated -
heartbreaking to see her daddy kiss the fake and to see Tim with his
eyes full of admiration and love for the impostor as he kissed and put
his arms around her. What amused smiles the woman in her beautiful body
shot Merry from time to time. God, was the bitch enjoying herself. And
Meredith had to smile and serve and wait on everyone. This was a slice
of hell.
In the kitchen her present, short plump husband was cooking with his
usual skill. He sighed with a smile on his face. "Ah, this Madam
Macintyre is so beautiful, so chic - her husband is a most lucky man!"
Merry felt her heart breaking. Who was living her wonderful life? Every
time she saw 'Meredith' her heart ached more. God, she was so
beautiful, so charming, so loved.
Somehow, some way she had to find a way to stop the spell, this merry
go round of madness!
Chapter 5
Merry heard the alarm ring. 'Thank God, it's MY alarm,' Merry thought,
then sighed. No more of Mimi's life, no more so sore feet and slutty
behavior! Merry admired her own lovely hand (how she missed it) as she
switched it off. Tim was sleeping beside her with a smug, satisfied
smile on his handsome face. Meredith fought down a feeling of anger at
him that he was clueless about it not being her soul in her body! As
Merry moved she could tell from the way her body felt that 'she' had
sex last night. Her nipples were feeling like they'd been nibbled on
too enthusiastically.
Feeling tired still, Meredith got out of bed and stumbled into the
bathroom. The body stealer must have used a lot of the night hours for
fun and games. Damn, she found she had a hickie! Merry showered and did
her hair. It was strange, but she felt a little 'off' not as much at
home in her real body as before.
"I'm just tried and cranky!" Meredith told herself. She did her makeup
and covered up the bites. She glanced at Tim still dead to the world.
Lucky bastard! No regular hours for him. 'Let him get his own
breakfast,' Meredith thought resentfully.
Meredith slipped on some low heeled boots to go with a new chic dress
she found in her closet. Her impostor has obviously been doing a fair
amount of shopping and at least she had good taste and knew what
flattered Merry. Well, time to get to work. WOW! It was going to be
strange to go in as a partner, a position that somehow the woman in her
body had managed to get. It came to Meredith that she was now making
almost twice as much money as before! But she couldn't find the ways or
wherefores of how her replacement had gotten the promotion. Weird.
Going gracefully down the stairs, her boot heels clicking, Meredith was
pleasantly surprised how nice the house looked. It was usually a bit
messy as Tim was a typical male and sloppy, and she usually didn't have
time to really do much cleaning.
Merry's cab arrived and she rode off to the station, pondering how in
hell she was going to stop this ring around the body shit. It wouldn't
be easy. Hell, she didn't even know who the witch was!
At work Meredith went to her new corner office and found she now had a
top-flight secretary. She shook her head. At least some good had come
out having her body appropriated! The firm had an amazing shake up
while she was a French Maid. The founder, seventy-year-old Mr. Black,
had died of a heart attack while having sex with a call girl. His son
William had come to the office and resigned the next day, saying he
hated his work. Even though she hadn't been really present, Meredith
could now 'remember' him saying happily that now that the old bastard
was finally dead he could do what he wanted - which was to go to Tahiti
and paint naked girls! So two positions had opened up and Meredith had
been chosen for the second - or at least the fake Merry had or - well,
whoever. That made her head hurt.
That afternoon Meredith got a phone call from her mother. "Merry, I am
so proud of you!"
"Thanks, Mom," Meredith said cautiously.
"And it was such great visit! We patched up some old differences and I
felt like I had my real daughter back again! I missed that feeling."
Merry's mouth dropped. 'What the hell? What the hell? Somehow the
impostor has healed the coolness between my mom and me.' That bitch was
taking over too much of her life!
Somehow Meredith got off the phone without blowing the new
relationship.
Merry decided after work to see a famous Jesuit - Father Weber, to see
if somehow he might help her. But it would be hard when she couldn't
say what was troubling her.
When Meredith called home Tim was disappointed that she would be late.
"Darling Merry, since moving to Hawthorne our marriage has gone from
great to super great! It seems to have given you more enthusiasm, more
love of life!" Tim said, bubbling about the great sex!
Meredith's fingers curled into claws. Not again! Who had been in her
body this time?
Merry gritted her teeth, but made herself thank her husband. 'Boy, it
isn't easy not to be a bitch when you know that for six days a month
you are not only sharing your body with another female, but your
clueless but handsome husband as well!'
"Oh, the maid came this morning. I think you were right about getting
one and she has kept her promise about not messing in my studio! You
said before the party that you would be damned if you were going to
clean up the next day. And somehow you found Heidi." He laughed. "Heidi
is so damn German I keep feeling I should salute! But is she a hard
worker and so clean. And however did you get Sophia to lend you Mimi
and her husband?" He laughed. "She served well, but God, what a bimbo!"
Meredith frowned. Had she been a bimbo in Mimi's body? Anyway, at last
they had a maid! Man, whoever had been in her body sure was making some
changes! But Meredith had to admit she liked having a maid and had
wanted one for years. They sure could afford one now!
She wondered which of the wives had been in her body so far and who
would be next! She didn't think that either Tori or Natalie had yet. It
might have been Sophia, she had confessed that she had the hots for Tim
and she was used to having a maid? But she was still resentful. Both
the women who had stolen her body and life seemed to be living and
being her better than she had!
Father Weber turned out to be a very intelligent, urbane man.
"Father, what would you say if I said there is black magic in the
world?"
He looked very keenly at her. "I would say that magic doesn't exist."
"But is that what you believe?"
He laughed. "You're very clever, Mrs. Macintyre. IF such darkness
exists, it is VERY dangerous and not something to try. I hope you are
not messing around with it?"
Meredith shuddered. "No, father."
He took his time looking at her and it was with a very penetrating
gaze. "Are you saying that you are the victim of such things?"
"I can't say that."
"Not able, not unwilling, and can't say that literally?"
She nodded.
He started making some notes. "Where do you live?"
"Hawthorne."
His eyebrows went up at this. "There have been some strange stories out
of Hawthorne. And many sensitives avoid the place. Come back in a week
I will see what I can find. In the meantime, would you object if I
bless you and sprinkle you with holy water?"
"Not at all! It might even help."
Merry went home in a more cheerful frame of mind. She had a great deal
of confidence in Father Weber. Maybe the blessing and holy water might
keep any more swaps from happening?
Boy, did the house look spotless and the maid had even made dinner
before she left. Merry usually didn't like sauerkraut, but Heidi's was
delicious with knockwurst!
But it is hard to hear Tim praise the other Merry.
As usual Meredith avoided the other 'club' members. The next week she
went in to see Father Weber. His secretary, another Jesuit, was very
upset and looked sad. He cleared his throat and said, "I am very sorry
to tell you this, but Father Weber is dead. He was the victim of a hit
and run driver three days ago. It was a tragic loss! Not only was a
fine man but a great scholar. Is there something I can help you with?"
'Father Weber is dead.' The phase formed a fugue in her spinning brain.
Horrified, Meredith shook her head and left. She would put no one else
at risk. Poor Father Weber! His death was on her head. The witch had
killed him! She was as sure of it as the sun rising in the East. She
cried on the way to her car.
The morning mail brought her a note printed in crayon. "Really, Merry,
you should really be more discrete. You don't want to make me angry. It
would be a great shame as I am very pleased with you as an addition to
our club. Just be a good girl and all will be well."
Meredith shuddered and crumpled the note. This merry go round of bodies
was - was what - she shuddered. 'I can tell from the pricking of my
thumbs that something wicked this way comes. Perhaps the sprinkling of
Holy Water and the blessing will get me out of this body swapping
madness?'
Meredith met her new maid the next day. But she didn't remember hiring
her. That memory had not transferred over. But the middle aged German
woman, stocky and strong, was pleasant and polite and treated her with
respect, and boy could she clean!
She prayed the night of the full moon.
The next morning, she knew it had happened again. But unlike the last
time, her new body wasn't short and sexy, but tall and stocky. She was
in Tori's body!
And who was in hers?
Chapter 6
Merry noticed that she was in bed with a strange man again. This time,
it wasn't even Tori's husband, but someone completely different. Tori's
memories told her it was her deputy Rob. Flashes of Tori's memories
told her that Tori used her position as sheriff (and intimidating
physique) to force her underlings to do what she wanted. God, she felt
like a slut even if it was by proxy. She nudged him awake and rudely
told him to get lost. Meredith had to restrain herself from using
profanity.
When she was alone, Meredith examined her current form. She was over
six feet tall, 200+ pounds of graceless muscle, and Merry hated it.
Hated it! To go from being beautiful to being ugly and unfeminine was
hard! She wanted to cry, to beat someone into - that was a frightening
and unfamiliar feeling. She wasn't even remotely pretty let alone
beautiful or sexy. She looked in the mirror and cried. The beefiness
was bad enough, but there was a streak of cruelty in her eyes.
Merry decided to explore her surroundings. Unlike Sophia or Merry
herself, Tori lived in a modest one-story house. It was on the
outskirts of town and somewhat isolated. She thought that no neighbor
would be able to hear what went on here, and that thought chilled her!
From her acquired memories she knew it wasn't an accident. Another
thought chilled her even more; Tori was frightened of only one thing,
one person in all the world...the witch. God, how powerful she must be
for a tough cop like Tori to be terrified of her. But who was it? That
part of Tori's memories she could not access.
She suddenly thought of Tim. As if him sleeping with some other woman
in her body wasn't bad enough, now Meredith had to worry about what
Tori would do to him! Of course Tori might not be in her body! She
could only hope for the best.
Before she could race to her house, Merry remembered Tori had an actual
job. She hated taking a shower in this unfeminine, ugly and gross body
but she did it. The surrogate Tori arrived at the sheriff's office in a
pissed-off mood. The deputies saw this and tried their best to keep out
of her line of fire. She found her day consisted mostly of dull
paperwork and piddling little tasks. Still, it beat being a maid, even
though she much preferred Mimi's sexy body to this hulk!
The oddest thing was when the mayor visited her office. He stood around
making idle chit chat until he quietly placed an envelope on her desk
before leaving. Merry opened the envelope and found it was filled with
cash. This raised her suspicions. She looked through the desk until she
found a bank ledger book with a key taped inside. There were several
entries listing monthly 'donations', which Tori had transferred into a
Swiss bank account. Tori was blackmailing the mayor! Another flash of
memory told her the key was to a safe deposit box in a bank in Boston
that held evidence of the mayor's wrong doings...as well as many
others. She also discovered that 60% of Tori's ill gotten gains went to
the witch, who was identified only by the letter W.
Also, Meredith found that Tori had gotten the job when the former
sheriff had died horribly in a fire in his home. The official verdict
was that he had been smoking in bed. But one fireman was quoted in the
paper - Merry looked up the archive as saying, "It was not like
anything he had ever seen. The house was a raging inferno and almost
impossible to put the fire out."
Glancing through the archives of the papers she found that there were
many strange happening and deaths. One day it had even rained toads! No
wonder poor Father Weber knew of Hawthorne.
Merry smiled sardonically. My, what strange 'accidents' happen in this
town and even in Boston.
A little worried at what she might find, Merry visited Tim the next
day, claiming she was doing a follow-up report on the break-in. She was
relieved to find he was okay. He was his usual chipper, charming,
handsome self. But it was easy for Meredith to see he thought her
present body was as charming as a sack of dead mice.
He grinned at the large muscular woman before him. "Say, sheriff, if
you don't think it's a bribe, would you like some of the tasty treats
Merry has made for me? She's taking up cooking and baking since we've
moved here."
Meredith took one; she was always hungry in this body and often visited
the donut shop. The treats were very good! It chilled her as this
reminded her of the other treats he mentioned before. It raised her
suspicions that it might be the same woman each time in her body.
Thoughtfully she went back to Tori's cruiser. A memory came to her -
Tori and he others were more than suspicious that the witch was the
only one who got to live in Meredith's beautiful body. They were very
resentful, but afraid to say anything.
What was going on? So in a very unfriendly frame of mine Meredith
started handing out tickets like candy. Nobody dared complain when they
saw who the cop was.
Later she couldn't help herself, she drove by the station and saw
'Meredith' and Tim. He was obviously picking her up. Merry groaned
silently as she saw the two embrace enthusiastically. Then, over Tim's
broad shoulder, the present Merry had the audacity to wink at her.
Merry cursed and drove away. Gloomily she went to Tori's home. Her
present husband was sitting there dinking beer. He looked up afraid. A
review of Tori's memories told her about him. They had started dating
in high school, when she strong-armed him, figuratively and literally,
into dating and eventually marrying her. He became a trucker in order
to get away from him. Not that Tori cared. It just gave her the perfect
opportunity to play the field.
"Just keep your mouth shut and stay away from me!" ordered Meredith.
He looked relieved. Meredith tossed him some money. "Here, get yourself
some food somewhere. They might serve you!"
She stormed into her new bedroom and slammed the door. What was
happening to her? Why was she acting so bitchy? So damn nasty? It
wasn't like her at all. She made herself a hefty drink. Would she ever
be rid of this curse? Who was the witch? She tossed down a double rye,
and felt a sudden chill. Would it be even safe to find out or try and
stop this merry go round of bodies?
Meredith promised herself to somehow make it through the week. She made
it a point to stay away from her body, her house and Tim. She
rearranged the office systems at the Sheriff's office much to the
amazement of everyone working there. Things were much smoother and more
efficient when she was done. Merry tried to control her new temper. It
wasn't easy. Not only did she hate this body and life, but Tori's
nature seemed to want to boil over. Tori's husband was back on the road
so that was a blessing.
Merry sent a lot of time in the gym and pumping iron and also working
out at kick boxing and karate. She was amazed how much iron she could
pump, and God could this new body kick ass! Some punk tried to rob the
liquor store and she beat the man insensible. She was ashamed how good
that felt.
She had never been more relieved when the six day nightmare ended and
she woke up in her own body. God, she hated being Tori even more than
Mimi! She spent a long time admiring her own body in the mirror. It was
so good to have it back! Meredith fought down a stray thought that
edged into her mind, a worry that her admiration of her own beautiful
body was a little like she was admiring something that wasn't really
hers. But that was absurd and crazy! She came to the conclusion that
the witch must be Susan. Who else - she laughed at the thought of
Natalie. She tried her best not to think of again losing her body at
the next full moon.
Tim irritated her by complaining that she had stopped making the tasty
treats! God, men were impossible. She was having her body stolen every
month and have to live as another woman and the man was whining about
not having his treats. He was like some over grown baby. But with
effort Meredith kept her temper. It wasn't Tim's fault! God how she
missed him when she was ripped out of her own body and life! During
lunch hour at work she frequently visited the great Boston library but
all she learned for sure was that witchcraft didn't exist but if it did
it wasn't something to mess with. What wonderful news! Meredith got
tossed out of the library by slamming a book down too hard on the table
and using some unladylike words.
The night before she was to swap once again Merry had non stop sex with
Tim. Trying to store up as much of pleasure and love as she could! As
she fell asleep she begged she wouldn't wake up Tori again.
A prayer, if such it was, was answered. She woke up as 'sweet' Sue. It
appeared she was making the round of the bodies of the club. If this
held true next month she would be Natalie. What a treat that would be!
Six days as a mousy, older, charm less librarian.
But who was being her now? Was it the witch?
Chapter 7
She looked at her new face in the mirror. Susan was still a beautiful
woman at 42, thanks to all the time, effort, and money she had used to
keep herself that way. Her memories told how she kept a strict regime
of exercise to keep herself trim, and had the occasional nip-tuck and
injections of botox to keep her youthful appearance. In fact, Susan was
somewhat obsessive about keeping herself looking young. If Merry was
right about her, then maybe that was another reason she started this
scheme. And now Merry was stuck as her for the next few days.
But who was in her body - was it as Merry suspected, the witch...or was
it Tori? The thought of Tori in her body and life made her shudder.
Well, there was nothing much she could do about it - unless... Well,
before she could do anything she had better discover who the witch was
for sure.
Meredith looked with distaste at Susan's husband snoring away next to
her. What a lazy drunk, why had she married him - Meredith corrected
herself. Why had Susan married him? Well, once he had been handsome and
charming. He was still handsome enough to win over Sophia though, but
Susan had grown jaded, and Merry - well, she was in love with her real
husband!
She snapped at her new maid, Beth, when she was served breakfast. Her
stomach hurt and - oh shit - from Susan's memories she realized she had
an ulcer! Just wonderful! She couldn't even have a cup of coffee. What
else was she going to discover? Well, she discovered Susan didn't have
a friend in the world. Meredith had to fight down the impulse to be a
bitch every moment. She explored Susan's mansion. Susan came from old
money and the house had been her grandfather's. The mayor was her
stepbrother and she despised him, she despised Sophia, she despised -
just about everybody!
Everyone but the witch...she was afraid of her. But this was cloudy and
Meredith suspected that the witch had put false memories in each body
of the club members. Merry couldn't be sure who was the real witch! It
could still be Susan. Her memories told her Susan was loaded and she
kept control of her money with an iron fist.
A memory came to Meredith as she look Pepcid for her new stomach that
she - Susan - had ordered her husband to sell Tim and Merry the house
at any price. It hadn't been an accident or chance they moved here.
Meredith shuddered. She had been lured here so that for six days a
month some other woman - perhaps the witch - could steal her beauty and
her Tim.
In Susan's special study it came to Merry that this was where the club
met. She remembered a meeting where Tori had complained about not
getting Meredith's body. Meredith shuddered. How Tori had screamed in
mortal agony on the floor as she was punished. Tori of the huge
muscles, huge body and fierce personally cried like a baby and begged
for mercy. A voice had seemed to come out of nowhere and everywhere,
and Meredith could not guess its origin. The voice was silky and cruel.
"Anyone else have any complaints?"
No one did.
Meredith shuddered in this thin middle aged body. Then she had a
thought. When she returned to her real body she would have this room
bugged.
Meredith was indignant when she found out that 'she' had apparently
told her servants that Mrs. Macintyre and her husband were coming to
dinner. Adding insult to injury, her husband - Susan's husband was lit
up and obviously looking forward to ogling the beautiful 'Meredith'.
The maid ushered in the handsome young couple saying, "Mr. and Mrs.
Macintyre."
The real Merry burned with inner fury as she saw who she was betting
was the evil witch in her body come gracefully in. She was dressed
beautifully in a new and expensive outfit that showed off her beauty -
especially her legs in beautiful, graceful heels that had to be
handmade Italian. Meredith's husband - Susan's husband, Meredith
corrected herself - couldn't take his eyes off them. Meredith as Susan
snapped, "Put your eyes back in your head, Bob!"
Tim grinned. God, he was so handsome and charming. 'Meredith' just
smiled smugly and shot a superior glance at 'Susan'.
Merry was forced to endure an evening spent looking enviously at her
former self. How beautiful she was, how charming, how her husband
adored her and how sweetly and sexily they were smiling and touching
each other! Also, the present Meredith had a healthy appetite while the
present Susan had to eat special foods for 'her' ulcer.
'Merry' smiled at her hostess. "Poor dear, I understand you have a very
bad ulcer. It must be tough to live with it!" she said
'sympathetically'.
Tim nodded agreement. "I bet!" He put his hand affectionately on his
beautiful young wife's. "Merry here never has any stomach troubles."
'Merry' grinned at 'Susan'. "Now, Tim darling, that's not very nice. It
might make poor Susan feel we were gloating...which is not the case!"
Merry was almost sure that Susan was the witch. From the way the fake
Meredith was behaving, from the fact that her house was the group's
headquarters and from Susan's famous, bitchy nature. Also, her vast
wealth all pointed at it. What an evening! An evening from hell! She
also had to endure none of the men paying any attention to her but
looking adoringly at her former self. Even her husband - Susan's
husband - couldn't take his eyes off that beautiful, graceful young
body. Oh, how she hated the vile impostor!
Meredith wondered how in hell she could endure this new life of musical
bodies of every month being forced out of her own lovely flesh, her own
lovely life and into someone else's. Then icing on the cake being
forced to watch someone else, living her life, living in Merry's
beautiful young body and enjoying her wonderful, handsome, charming
husband.
Later that evening, Bob was feeling amorous. Merry peevishly told him
to go sleep in another room. As Susan often withheld sex from him,
Merry felt it was the perfect excuse not to have sex with another
woman's husband again. This was why he constantly eyed other women. Not
that he would ever cheat on Susan. No, he was too afraid of her to do
that!
Merry was not in a good mood when she went to work the next day. Bob
may be called the president of the company, but Susan was the one who
held the true power. Merry spent the day, when she wasn't ordering
around underlings, on the phone wheeling and dealing. She soon realized
all the stress was what caused her - Susan's ulcer in the first place.
Somehow Merry got through the week. It wasn't easy. Everywhere she went
she was met with hostility and dislike. Even the dogs seemed to bark at
her. This was hard as Meredith was used to being liked. Well, at least
she had an army of servants - even a chauffer who drove her around in a
Rolls Royce.
She visited 'her' sister-in-law Sophia to try and see if Sophia thought
she was the witch and Sophia had no suspicion that it was Meredith in
this middle-aged body. Instinctively Merry found herself snubbing
Sophia and asking her kindly about her 'little drinking' problem and
Sophia returned the compliment by asking about her stomach. It was
almost too real - like Meredith had done this many times before. She
was falling into acting like the person she showed to the world far too
much for her comfort.
To make her ulcer flare up even more she got a call from the impostor
Merry thanking her kindly for the wonderful evening of great food and
wine.
"I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself," Meredith said acidly.
"Oh, I did," laughed the fake Merry. "I did! Now, you take care of the
troublesome stomach! I sure would hate to have such an ulcer. What a
pity you couldn't even enjoy your great French wine."
'What a bitch!' thought Merry as she hung up. 'Rubbing it in that she's
young, and beautiful while I'm-' Meredith didn't complete the thought.
It was too weird. Somehow the days dragged on to six.
Six nights later.
Thank god, Merry thought. She was back in her own body. She touched
Tim, sleeping peacefully beside her. She ran to the mirror. It was so
nice to be home! Meredith felt like kissing her reflection but that was
too weird.
Chapter 8
Even though Meredith was delighted to be back in her own beautiful body
and lovely, happy life her joy was tempered that it would only last a
few weeks. It was bitter cups of hemlock for her that her life was not
her own any more, that every month she would lose it to another woman.
It was especially bitter that no one guessed it was not the real her
while she was gone, that even Tim sometimes preferred the impostor in
her flesh to her.
Her mood was not improved when she received a package the next Saturday
of a DVD. It was one the witch must have taken when she and Tim were
making love! Poor Merry cried to see her lost flesh enjoying sex with
Tim! And Tim, the shit, was obviously enjoying himself and later even
commented on how much Merry had improved in bed. She cried off and on
the whole day. The tasty treats were bad enough but this was way too
much.
She read again the 'kindly' note from the witch saying 'I hope you
appreciate how well I have taken care of OUR life! I am sure you
realize by now that I am the only one I am trusting in being Merry. The
rest are not to be trusted with our beautiful body, life and husband.
No thanks are necessary!"
Merry crumpled the note and burned it.
Work was busier than ever now that she was a partner and it kept
Meredith from brooding about the coming full moon. She avoided the
other members of the club. In her spare time she did a careful search
of anyone who might help her break this evil spell. Two weeks into her
return she found Elsbeth who Merry was convinced was a genuine witch.
With hope in her heart she drove outside Boston to the woman's home.
Elsbeth was a middle aged woman who looked normal, even though Merry
noticed items in and out of the house that she recognized from her
reading as protective charms.
"So you feel you are under attack from a witch, Mrs. Macintyre? You are
probably right as I see a magic aura around you." She laughed. "Are you
sure you're not a witch yourself? I sense powerful magic?"
"I wish!"
"Be careful what you wish. Now, first I need to know where you live, it
will help me know whom we might be dealing with."
"Hawthorne."
Elsbeth turned pale and her hands shook.
"Please leave NOW! NOW! I'm sorry, but I can't afford to become
involved. Not against HER. Good-bye! I am sorry, Mrs. Macintyre."
The terrified witch practically shoved Merry out the door. A bewildered
and shaken Meredith stood outside Elsbeth's house and heard the door
slam.
"My god, is the witch of Hawthorne really that powerful that she
terrifies even other witches?"
Merry had no idea what to do now. Things seemed hopeless...it looked
like she'd have to get used to sharing her body and Tim once a month!
She cursed fluently.
The rest of the month's work kept her so busy that she was able to
avoid thinking of the upcoming swap. Idly she wondered if she would
become Natalie the librarian. She was the only one she hadn't been. The
night of the full moon Tim wondered why she seemed so sad and
depressed. But she couldn't tell him. Merry tossed and turned and woke
up in another bed as usual.
She was Natalie.
And Merry was sure the witch, whoever she was, was now in her body.
Merry noticed was she was alone. It seemed Natalie and her husband had
separate rooms. That was a relief - maybe she wouldn't have to have sex
with him during the next six days. She sighed and felt tired. Natalie's
body lacked the vitality of Merry's real one. It was harder to get out
of bed. She didn't want to but she found herself in front of a mirror
looking at this poor excuse for a body. She was too thin, had no
breasts and had a very plain face. Merry sighed. Well, it was only for
six days she tried to tell herself.
Merry took the tour of what was to be her home for the next six long
days. It was a modest suburban structure. It didn't match what she had
heard about Natalie being descended from the town's settlers. Well, she
figured, a lot can happen in 300 or so years. The family fortune had
probably run out. It would explain why Natalie worked as a librarian.
Maybe that's why she took part in the swap club, so she could enjoy the
life of someone wealthier than her.
Merry was surprised they had a maid who cooked her breakfast. The maid
