The sun shone brightly in the morning Florida sky as the blue
convertible pulled into the driveway of the white stucco house. The
garage door opened and the car pulled into the darkness of the garage.
"We're home," Jeff announced.
"Back to the real world," his wife Sally said with a sigh.
"Go inside and I will bring in all the luggage."
Jeff and Sally had just gotten back from a honeymoon cruise to the
Caribbean. Both in their 50's and both on their second marriage, they
had decided to tie the knot after living together for a couple of years.
Jeff was a ghost writer. He helped famous and not so famous people write
books about themselves or politics or whatever they wanted. He would
take a stack of typed pages, usually on a disk, and turn it into a
finished book. It paid well and kept him busy. He liked the work. He
stayed at home most days and typed in front of his computer or traveled
to the prospective author's home for interviews and to get to know the
person he was writing about. Sally was a Nurse Practitioner. She worked
at a local private clinic treating mostly the elderly. She had normal
office hours but was on call every third day when she might be at work
for almost 24 hours. She had a substantial income. Because Jeff and
Sally both worked and had no children living at home they could afford a
very nice home on a golf course in an exclusive housing community.
Jeff took the luggage out of the car and put it just inside the house.
Sally called out for him to put the suitcases on the bed in their
bedroom, which he did. As he put each suitcase on the bed Sally opened
it up and started sorting the clothes into three laundry baskets. She
had one pile for dry cleaning on the bed. While she got the laundry
started Jeff went to the bedroom that was his office and turned on his
computer. He sat down and when the machine was ready he checked his
email. They had been gone for two weeks and he had almost two hundred
emails. Most were ads which he deleted but some were about current
projects and a few were well-wishing messages about his wedding.
Within an hour the normal household routine had returned. The washing
machine was running and Sally had put together a healthy salad for
lunch. Sally was very concerned about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
She saw the results of a sedentary lifestyle every day at work. Some of
her patients were in their 60's but were bent over and walked like they
were 20 years older. She also had a few patients in their 80's that
looked to be in their 60's. It was obvious that maintaining a healthy
lifestyle was important.
Monday morning the alarm sounded at 6 o'clock as always. Sally slid out
of bed and put on her running clothes. She and three other ladies from
the neighborhood ran for forty minutes every morning. By the time she
was back Jeff had showered and started breakfast. After showering, Sally
dressed and came to the table overlooking the golf course for breakfast.
Even at this early hour the golfers were on the course.
Sally brought a small container of pills and placed them in front of
Jeff.
"What's this?" he asked.
"These are your vitamins you promised you would start taking after we
got back, remember?"
"There are so many. What about just one big vitamin?"
"Those regular vitamins don't contain all the vitamins and minerals that
these do. Also, I am going to give you a shot that will help you stay
young looking."
"Do you think I am looking old?"
"Not yet but you will be surprised the results in only a few months."
"OK," he said as he pulled up his shirt sleeve for the shot.
"This one is better in the butt. So stand up and pull your pants down."
Jeff did as he was told. The shot was administered. And Jeff pulled his
pants up.
"Do I get a shot every day?" he asked.
"No the shots are only once a week or so. But the vitamins are every
day."
With that Sally put the syringe in a medical waste box. Kissed Jeff on
the forehead and went to work.
Jeff took all the vitamins as he continued to read the newspaper.
This scene was repeated every day with the shots on Mondays. Sally took
a blood sample every couple of weeks to make sure Jeff's blood chemistry
was as she wanted.
Within a few weeks Jeff noted that his face looked younger just as Sally
had told him. His skin was softer giving him a more of a young man's
face.
Months went by and Jeff and Sally settled into a routine. Jeff was at
his computer or on the phone most of the day. His writing contracts were
very steady. There seemed to be plenty of politicians that wanted to
write a memoir but had never really written a book before. Jeff spent
some time with them, took lots of notes, and put together a coherent
biography. Many of these were published by the person themselves through
a vanity press. The books were given to donors, friends, or
constituents. Jeff got no credit but he did get a nice check.
Sally's routine was really routine. Up in the morning, a run, shower,
breakfast, work, and home again. Of course she did see many patients
every day and felt a part of so many families. She worked long hours not
getting home till 7 o'clock most days. Jeff usually was burned out by 3
o'clock. He took a dip in the pool or went for a bicycle ride in the
afternoon. He did the grocery shopping and fixed dinner. After dinner
they watched TV for a while and then went to bed. The amount of sex had
dropped off dramatically. He just wasn't interested and she didn't seem
to mind. Both just went to sleep.
One morning Jeff asked Sally for her opinion. He had just gotten out of
the shower and she had come back from running. He wanted her to look at
his nipples. They appeared swollen and were very tender. She wiped her
face with a towel and looked closely at his chest. "I think you are
growing some Man Boobs, dear."
"Man Boobs?"
"Yes, Man Boobs, I see them all the time. It happens to men as they get
older. Look it up on the computer. It is perfectly natural."
Jeff took her word for it but looked it up on the computer anyway. Yes,
Man Boobs did exist but it didn't look like it happened to everyone. He
accepted the fact that he was growing breasts as a natural occurrence.
He changed his wardrobe a little. He shifted to sport shirts from knit
polo shirts.
Something else happened. On more than one occasion sales clerks used the
term ma'am when addressing him. At first he thought nothing of it
assuming that the flowery tropical shirts he was wearing were a little
feminine. But it happened more and more. When he looked in the mirror he
did look more feminine than in the past, not just younger but feminine.
His skin was very soft and his cheeks were fuller. Combined with his
breasts he did look like a woman.
Jeff had four drinks before Sally came home. He hadn't fixed dinner. He
was upset. Sally tried to console him and find out what was wrong.
That's when he told her how he felt. He had become so feminine looking
that even women were calling him ma'am.
"Don't you like the way you look?" she asked.
"No, I don't look like a man anymore. And I think those vitamins you
have been giving me are responsible."
"Well I think you look wonderful and yes the vitamins did have something
to do with it."
"You mean you knew this would happen?"
"Not exactly. But I am very happy with the changes. You should be to."
"Why should I be happy with the changes?"
"Because you look better, will have a longer life, and you now look the
role of a housewife. Remember before we were married and I asked all
those questions about the gender rolls in a marriage?"
"Yes."
"Well you have taken the role of the housewife. It is only natural that
you should look the part."
Jeff was stunned. It had never occurred to him that Sally might have
planned this all along. What to do now?
"Look Jeff, what has this done to our lives?"
"What do you mean?"
"How has this affected what you do?"
"So far nothing really."
"Right. So look on the bright side. You are one of the few people in the
world that has the option of being a man or a woman. It's all up to
you."
"What if I don't want to look like a woman?"
"We can stop the female hormone shots and change to testosterone shots.
Your face will go back to the way it was. You will be more likely to get
prostate cancer like your father, you will probably die a few years
earlier. It's kind of up to you."
"When you put it that way it sounds like I should stay the way I am."
"Exactly."
"But I still don't feel right."
"OK. Let's try this. We'll keep things up the way they have been and we
will get you some ladies clothing so that you can see what you would
look like dressed as a woman."
"My hair is to short."
"Hair grows. We can get you a wig in the meantime to try it out. OK."
"OK. I'll give it a try."
Sally hugged Jeff very hard.
The next weekend Sally helped Jeff remove all his body hair with a
depilatory. He was smooth as silk when he got out of the shower. She
took him to a lingerie shop to be measured for a bra. He needed a B cup.
Then they went to a wig shop for a wig. Sally had to convince him to get
a reasonable style. He picked out ones that were a little to sexy. Then
to the department store for a free make over. It wasn't really free
because Sally bought all the cosmetics the sales clerk used. Jeff was
surprised. He did look pretty. Then on to the shoe store and finally
women's clothing.
They had quite a pile of clothing when they got home. Sally convinced
Jeff to put on a skirt, blouse outfit they had purchased. It looked
great. Sally had him put on a pair of flats and then she drove to a nice
restaurant for dinner.
Jeff knew everyone was looking at him funny. But in fact no one noticed.
He was five foot ten in flats and Sally was five foot five but she wore
heels. The two appeared as two women on a ladies night out. Jeff was
convinced that he could pass as a woman.
Over the next five months Jeff got used to switching gender at will. His
natural hair had grown and he could comb it one way to look manly or put
the front down in bangs to look feminine. Once Sally took him to a nail
shop for a pedicure and manicure. She had them put extensions on his
nails and bright red polish on his hands and feet. He felt stuck because
there was no way he could play the role of a man with those nails. He
had the extensions removed the next time he went to have his nails done.
Finally, at breakfast Jeff told Sally that he was very happy with his
new body. He liked to switch back and forth. He asked her to call him
Janet when he was dressed as a woman.
"Why Janet?" she asked.
"Because I want the same initials and I liked a girl named Janet in high
school."
