I said, "Why not?" I ordered a "Chivas and water" and he smiled and
ordered the same. "The lady has class." He said. I smiled and nodded. We
started talking and I had to be careful not to let him know. I didn't
want a scene right there. But before long we were talking like old
friends. He asked my name. "Natalie" was all I said. He smiled and said,
"My first love was named Natalie."
We chatted for a while more and he asked me up to his room. I decided

The sentence hung in the air for what must have been 10 seconds. I
couldn't look him in the eyes and I got up and walked out on the balcony

day and so he was gone when I woke. I showered, got dressed, called a
cab and headed to the airport. I flew home that day thinking that I'd
lost him. When I got home, I went down to the convenience store on the
corner and bought a quart of chocolate ice cream. I came home and put on
some sweat pants, ate the entire quart and watched an old movie on TV
called "The Goodbye Girl". I cried and I laughed and went to bed.
First a week went by and then a month and then 3 months and no call or
email or anything. It was over. I was trying to move on emotionally but
I was drinking a little too much and some of my "clients" were making
comments about how I seemed remote and they were paying me so they
expected me to pay attention.
It was a Sunday afternoon. I had a "date" that night and I had just come
up from the pool to get in the shower. I was wearing a black bikini and
had just put on a short skirt cover up when the doorbell rang. Without
thinking I went to the door and opened it and there was Ray. I stood

together on the fishing trip. He stopped and just shook his head. "I'll
take that drink now. Make it a double." I went to the kitchen and when I
returned he had most of the pics laid out on the coffee table. We went
through them one at time because they documented my transition over the
years. As we talked, Ray seemed to relax. I'm not sure if that's because
of the pictures and talking about old times or if it was the scotch.
After a while, Ray leaned back on the sofa and smiled at me. "What?" I
asked feeling self conscious for a second. "Natalie, I have thought
about you every day since I went away to school. I know this sounds
strange but you were my high school sweetheart. And now, after these
last few months, I have fallen in love with you all over again. You're
gorgeous, smart, funny, sexy, and maybe most important you know who you
are. Baby, I love you." And with that he sat back up and kissed me.
I was starting to cry. He hugged me and said, "Look it's almost 5:30.
Why don't you go put on something nice and we'll go to dinner. I've got

We headed for the French Quarter and parked. As we walked in to

began to flow. Our server came and asked if we wanted to see a dessert
menu. Ray waved him off with a "give us a minute?" He took my hand and
said. "Natalie, this evening has been incredible. When I was flying down
here, I wasn't sure if you would even see me. I wasn't sure how this
would end up. But now that I know everything, I'm surer of this than I
was before I got here." With that he got out of his chair, reached in
his pocket and knelt on one knee. He took out a jewelry box. "Miss
