"Mikey! Let's go! You're gonna be late for your game!"
"Hang on, Dale, I can't find my glove!"
Dale already had the car running in the driveway. He had to hurry; he
was cutting it close as it is coming back from campus and taking his
brother to his baseball game, and now Mikey couldn't even find the glove
he had already set out for him.
"It's on the kitchen table, next to the plant!" Dale yelled up at the
first floor balcony of the student housing.
"Found it!"
As Mikey got into the car, Dale knuckled his head. "You're gonna be late
guy!"
Dale's younger brother pouted at him. "YOU'RE the one who put the glove
someplace I couldn't find it!"
"It's always in the same place, Mikey. Did you lock the door?"
Mikey sounded exasperated. "Yessss! I'm in high school Dale, I can
handle a door."

"Good luck, Mikey!" Dale yelled towards his brother, who waved back as
he ran towards the field. As he walked towards the field, he was proud
of himself for getting his brother on time, despite his tight college
schedule. He'd taken good care of Mikey for the last 2 years they've
lived together, after their mother had wanted to send him to the private
high school near his college. At first he resisted, after all he had a
relatively busy college life, but eventually he caved. It turned out to
be fine, as most of his busy time was from classes and studying anyways,
his social life was nearly nonexistent. He only had to worry about
dinner and his brother's baseball games and other assorted high school
meetings.
Despite everything he's somehow managed to keep his 3.9GPA in Economics,
which made him breathe an outward sigh of relief as he made it to his
seat.
"Something got you stressed?"
Dale turned to the man. "Say again?"
"You just seemed a bit stressed. Sorry, I'm Marcus," he reached out his
hand towards Dale.
Shaking his hand, he looked at the large man sitting next to him. He
wasn't exactly short himself at about 5'9" but this man was at least 6
feet, and quite built. He thought he might've been some sort of talent
scout.
"I guess I am, in a way," Marcus replied.
"That kid, the short one with black hair in the outfield," Dale said,
pointing. "He's with me. He's pretty great too; you should keep an eye
on him."
"The kind of longish hair?"
"Yeah that's him. He's probably the best outfielder on the team," Dale
said proudly, and correctly.
Marcus laughed. "You really take care of..."
"Mikey."
"Right. Mikey. Don't you?"
Dale grinned. "I do my best."
"I can really see those maternal instincts there," Marcus said, ribbing

The two laughed it off, and made some small talk as the game started. A
few innings in, Mikey made an amazing catch and throw that resulted in
two outs.
Marcus was impressed. "Wow you've raised a hell of a kid there!"
Dale sheepishly laughed. "He's a hell of a kid, but he's not my kid,
that's my brother!"
"Nice to know you get along so well with your son."
Dale was confused now. "Ah, no, he's my brother, not my son."
"I'm not sure, the way you dote on him, sure seems like he's your kid to
me."
Dale's brow furrowed now. "I don't...but he's not mine."
Marcus put an arm around him. "It's alright, you don't have to be shy
about it. You went through all the trouble having the kid right? You
should be proud of him!"
A sort of fog went through Dale's eyes. "I did? I should?"
"Yeah, definitely! I mean, he's such a great baseball player, right?
Weren't you just about to yell a cheer for him? Come on don't be
afraid!"
Dale felt pride for his newly realized son well up in him, and he
couldn't hold back. "That's my boy! Woo! GO MIKEY!"
Mikey was too far away to hear it, or he'd definitely be a little
confused, but Marcus was still satisfied to hear it. "See? I don't know
why you were so afraid to tell me he's your kid."
"I-I don't know either, I love my son!"
"You're a great parent too, I think. Lot of potential. Why don't you
tell me more about yourself?"
Dale felt himself unable to do anything other than oblige, and spent the
rest of the game telling Marcus about his life story, their parents, his
brother, now his son. All of it still with the frame of reference of
Mikey as his brother, creating amusing inconsistencies in his stories
that went unnoticed by him, but Marcus corrected them anyways. By the
end of the game, Dale remembered adopting Mikey, and Dale's had always
been an only child. Marcus was going to leave them alone shortly after
the game, but hearing Dale's story, he decided he'd involve himself
quite a bit more in this family's affairs.

Post-game, Dale stood in the parking lot, waiting with Marcus as Mikey
ran up to them.
"Uh, hi," Mikey said towards Marcus, and looked expectantly at Dale.
"This is Marcus, a friend I met today."

Marcus extended his hand out, and Dale placed the keys in it. "That's

Marcus had filled in Mikey on his new role as adopted son before any
real conversation could get started, and as he finished getting Mikey
set up with it, he finally got to move into some real fun.
"So Mikey, as I was telling Dale earlier, I'm really proud of your
mother."
Both were confused. "Um, I'm adopted, remember?"
"Like the kid said," Dale added.
"Exactly. There's that maternal instinct again Dale. I always knew you'd

Marcus was a friend.

"You've always wanted that feeling, to have your own child, but you
couldn't, being a man, so you did the next best thing and adopted."
"That's right, I know..." Dale said, with a hand on his stomach.
"Now that you've solved that part of you, you can finally go down that
road of being what you wanted to be, a mother. It's what you always
wanted. Why be a woman without the kid, right?"
Dale gulped. "Y-Yeah..."
"Now you've got the kid, and you've got the maternal instinct, what's
next? What did you want that comes after this, to be a mother?"
Dale knew the answer. "A woman?"
"Correct!" Marcus shouted as he honked the horn, causing the driver in
front of him to honk back.

They walked in, and Marcus had a few words with one of the pharmacists.
Dale was in a fog the entire time, mind grappling with his new thoughts
and feelings. Soon they went back to Dale's home, bags of hormones and
medicine Dale would now need in hand, free of charge of course.
They sat down, and Dale sat awkwardly, trying to keep his knees

The thought hadn't occurred to Dale. "I suppose that makes sense. What
should I call myself then?"
Mikey was going to offer but Marcus was ready and cut him off. "How
about 'Hannah'?"
"Hannah?" Dale had a spark of recognition for the name when he said it.
That was because Marcus had purposefully chosen their mother's name.
Mikey chimed in. "Have I heard that before?"
Marcus was quick to reply. "That would be impossible. Neither of you
have ever known anyone named 'Hannah', isn't that right?"
Dale nodded in agreement. "I think you're right. It's a cute name too; I
like it," he looked over to Mikey. "Okay! From now on, your mother's
name is Hannah, got it?"
"Yes mom!" Mikey smiled. His gaze floated over to Marcus, who smirked
back at him. He blushed and turned away, leaving Marcus amused at his
new situation.
