That was when the black suburbans pulled up to the theater, and armed agents seemed to be everywhere in the town. The trip itself was uncomfortable, with the agents remaining silent, as they drove to the city, and to the non-descript government building. Sarah found herself sitting in an interrogation room, looking at herself in the one way mirror, trying to figure out what was going on. She had sat there for a long while, before finally someone came in, and un-cuffed her. However, no words were spoken. Sarah rubbed her wrists, trying to figure out what was going on, when finally, some agents came in. "Miss Owens, you have been brought here, to try to ascertain your knowledge about Miss Clara's Academy, and why the school was so abruptly shutdown, and a large number of its students, staff, and nearby residents seemed to have disappeared. Your daughter, Violet, is here as well, as we try to determine her legal guardianship. Now, I want to ask you, what you know of Miss Clara's academy, and the mass exodus that seems to have happened there?" "What have you done to my kitten?" "Violet is fine. But she is a runaway, as defined under the law. She will be taken to a foster care home, pending the outcome of this investigation." "Violet is not a runaway, she is my kitten. Sarah looked up at the agent, and gave him a confident smile. "Agent, who-ever-you-are, if you knew anything about my background, you would not have just said that." The agents in the room looked at Sarah, and hesitated. It only took a few moments for her to size them up, and realize they were no threat to her, so she just sat in the chair, waiting. "Miss Owens, please just answer the questions." "I already told you, I know nothing about Aliens, or conspiracies, or what not. I run a respectable Ballet theater, nothing else." "Are you aware that a large group of persons have gone missing from the Academy? Or that one of its neighbors has gone missing along with the young girls she was looking after?" She sprang up out of the chair, and grabbed the nearest agent, putting him into a headlock, and positioning him in front of her, to shield herself in case the other agent tried anything. She moved swiftly, and deliberately, her mind focused on her kitten's safety. "You cut off her collar? How dare you destroy something of hers? Did she tell you she wanted it off?" "Well no, but she can't wear it in the Foster home," he never got the chance to finish his statement before finding himself pinned to the wall. Sarah knew he only had a few moments of consciousness left in his body, as another agent, a female one this time, came into the room. Sarah looked at her, and recognized her. She relaxed her grip, just enough to show she was open to listening, as the female agent began speaking. "Sarah, Violet is fine. They didn't hurt her, and we are ending this farce of an investigation now," said her former classmate who had just entered the room. "John you just don't get how thin the ice is under your feet here, do you?" "What are you saying Dee? You're just going to let her walk out of here?" "John, I was her roommate at that Academy. I wore one of those collars myself. It isn't what you or anyone in the bureau think it is. And if you ever remove another kitten's collar I'll personally gut you like a fish. My Momma took me in when the rest of society had tossed me aside. Sent me to a foster home where I was molested and no one cared. "Dee, keep your collar dear. Violet deserves a new one, from me. But your agents here are lucky. I guess they never met a cougar mother before." Sarah and Dee walked out of the room, and Sarah dropped to one knee as Violet came rushing up to her, and wrapped her arms around her momma's neck. Sarah hugged her kitten back, holding her tightly. "My poor kitten. Those mean men won't ever harm you again. And Aunt Dee, was willing to give up something special to you. But I want her to keep it, since your momma is here to take you home now." Violet looked at her Aunt, and her momma, and gave both of them a hug. Her leotard and wrap around skirt looked no worse for wear, but it was obvious she had not wanted to change, nor do anything to help the agents in the room she was being held in. Dee looked down at her grandkitten, and smiled. "I am so proud of you, Violet. You did well, little kitten. " "Dee, thank you," Sarah told her as she led Violet back down the hall. "You're welcome," she answered. "Thank you Aunt Dee," said Violet. Dee dropped to one knee. "You're most welcome Sweetheart. I hope to see you dance next week. Trinity says you're the best in her class, and I always go to all of my Grandkittens recitals." Hand in hand, Sarah and Violet walked out of the government building, and into a limo that was sent for by Dee, after conferring with the Governor. "Sarah, this limo will take you back to the town. Please don't go too far, though. I am sure the Governor will want to talk to you, as soon as possible. There has been some shake-ups, and some news that seems to require some delicate handling." Chapter 2: The Announcement Sarah and Violet got back to the theater 2 hours later. Violet was squirming in her seat, testing all the buttons, and marveling at the motorcycle escort that led them out of the city, and back to their home town. Sarah could see that something had indeed happened, and was continuing to happen, as they entered the town. News vans, reporters, and a number of protestors had all gathered near the main road in, clogging the route from the interstate to the town border. However, not one of them had been able to make it past the police barriers at the town limits. As their limo passed, many cameras clicked pictures and took video, not knowing who was inside. Violet kept close to Sarah, as the town police checked Sarah's ID, and waved the car into the town. As soon as they entered, the noise from the press died out to a trickle. It was like a barrier had been raised, and only those who had the right access were getting past. The limo took Sarah and Violet to the theater, and Sarah thanked the driver. "My pleasure, Miss Owens. I never had a more delightful Cougar and Kitten in the car. Violet, make sure you dance well, this weekend. I am sure all the other cougars and kittens, who are not performing, will be jealous of your fortune. Oh, and Miss Owens, I am supposed to give you this, now that we are in the town." The driver reached into the glove box, and pulled out a small box. Sarah took it, and thanked the driver, a puzzled look on her face as she tried to place the driver from her past. It was obvious the driver knew what kittens and cougars were, and also the way to the theater. But she couldn't figure it out, at the moment. Violet held on to Sarah's hand, as they made their way into their theater home, to begin setting up for the show. But the unexpected exodus of the kitten shelter, the school, and a majority of the kitten and cougar population made it seem like it might turn out to be a waste. Still, Sarah had made a promise to try to get a show going, and a show was what she was going to produce. Sarah watched, as Violet went around the theater's shop, and checked the inventory of leotards, tights, shoes, and gaffs, and made notes as to sizes they needed to order, and which sizes were overstocked. Sarah meanwhile double checked the kitten lock on the theater door, and also checked the dressing rooms and other kitten hiding spots, to make sure there weren't any surprises. With all the activity at the town borders, she didn't expect to find anyone, but it never hurt to check. 2 Hours later, both Sarah and Violet cuddled together up in the loft apartment, watching the news. Both Sarah and Violet couldn't believe the events that had happened. "Ladies and Gentlemen, as the Governor of this state, and in consultation with my fellow Governors, at 12 midnight, the borders of the state are going to be closed to all federal law enforcement agencies, federal spies, and other members of the federal government. After numerous, illegal detentions, as well as the harassment of our state's citizens, the Governors of a number of states have issued decrees which would ban agents of the federal government from entering our states. This action, along with other measures, will ensure that our citizens will be protected from the unlawful tactics of the federal government, and also allow us to better administer law and order in our own towns." "Furthermore, federal laws will no longer be enforced within our borders, federal taxes will be suspended, and all ties will be severed with the federal government, until such time as deemed appropriate by the Governors of our states. National Guard units have been posted on the border, to keep federal agents from entering our state, and also to ensure the orderly withdrawal of federal agents from within our state." Violet looked at Sarah, as the news commentators began digging into the whole news story, and what it means to the nation as a whole. "Momma, what does that all mean?" It also means, that good little lost kittens, now have a safe place to come to, when they need to get away. But, I think, it also means we are going to be busy, too." Chapter 3: The Phone Call The next morning, Sarah took Violet out to the shops on Main Street, and looked to see who was left. Sarah knew a lot of the shops had gone with the convoy, but she hoped enough of the regular shops were going to be left, to make the Cougar and Kitten life continue on. Sarah hopped the uniform shop, collar shop, and beauty salon would be around. But looking at the vacant lots, and missing buildings, Sarah felt a tug in her heart, as she tried to make sense of what was left in town still. "We're going to have to start over, Momma." Sarah whispered to the air. As they walked through the main district Sarah saw that the strip mall where Tiffany Tyler's Salon as well as the others that seemed to be still there, just not open at the moment. She noted in a little notebook. Tiffany's Kitten Salon, Silver String Fine Kitten Wear, Leona's Leather, and Raven's Jewelers went into her list. "Sarah, over here," she turned to see Emily Carter and her Kitten Louise. "Hurry before they come back." "Emily, what's going on? Why are you hiding?" she asked. "People with swords are everywhere. They stopped us and asked us where you were," she said. "They have this list of people they're looking for in town." "Did they say who they are?" "They said something about the Free Alpha Alliance, or some such. They have this completely big area set up over where Erika Tyler's stables used to be. Like six of those huge Semi trucks. And they drive Ford Escapes and old muscle cars. Just then one of the ford Escapes cruised slowly past, then stopped at the corner where old Harriet hung out. She started to get up to leave as two of them stepped out. Sarah was just close enough to overhear. "Excuse me Ma'am, are you alright? Do you need anything?" he reached forward and placed something in her old ceramic bowl, which elicited a grin and a thank you. "Do you need a ride to somewhere to get something to eat? We'll bring you back here and keep an eye on your possessions for you." To Sarah's surprise the old woman who never trusted anyone allowed him to help her up and then load all of her boxes into the back before they drove away with her. Continuing down the street she saw there were a lot of the street people walking around with food. "Miss Sarah, look what I got," old Phil was showing her his new warmer clothing and the hot hands packs he'd been given for his gloves. "Oh, do you still want me to help the out-of-towner's find safe parking next week?" "Where did you get all of that Phil?" "Oh I helped the sword people set up their soup kitchen out at Miss Erika's old place. Is it true that she's really gone? Her and the others?" he asked her. "Yes Phil I'm afraid it is," she answered him. "I'm going to miss those pretty girls with the blue fur. They were always nice when they let me come to the school at night to feed them and young Miss Correll." He looked sad and Sarah knew that he was one the few people trusted to perform as a feeder for the races that required fresh blood to thrive. He was in Endorphin withdrawal. After an hour walking around the gutted business district, past the empty lot where the kitten shelter had been, and along the main streets, and seeing the lots where once proud homes had stood, Sarah took Violet back to the theater. The phone rang, suddenly. Sarah picked it up. "Hello? Kitten Theater and Dance Supply. How may I help you?" "Sarah, is this you?" "Yes." "Good. I knew it was, but I have to make sure. With the announcement yesterday, there has been a lot going on around the states. It seems, some government bureaucrat is trying to make up some rule or something, to slow us down. But let me get to the point. I know what that town means to a lot of us, all over the country. I want to help you, and the remaining cougars, get the town back on its feet, quickly. You would be surprised how many good kids are languishing in federal and state facilities, when there are so many qualified and loving families out there, just waiting for the opportunity to adopt one of the lovely dears. So, I hope you are sitting down, because the news I am about to tell you, is major. A number of prominent citizens are moving their fortunes to our state, and the neighboring states. So much so, that our state's coffers are finally sufficient to begin making the necessary improvements to our infrastructure. It is amazing what each state can do, when they don't have to follow some federal regulations." Sarah smiled, listening to the governor having a laugh. She knew all too well some of the stupid regulations and hoops people were forced to go thru, for the simple things in life. "Anyway, the reason I am calling you, is this. As one of the few remaining long term cougars in our state, and in the town made famous for its cougar and kitten policy, I was hoping you could give me some people whom I could issue a grant to, for the town's rebuilding. I know you need a lot of new construction, since some of the key structures you came to rely on have moved. " Sarah was thunderstruck. Not only did the Governor know of their community, but the state was willing to help pay to rebuild it. Sarah practically was out of breath at the news. "Governor, I don't know what to say, besides thank you. But why not ask the mayor, or the economic board, or any of the other civic leaders? Why me?" "Sarah, I am hoping that with this change in policy, the city will be able to become a true haven for the kittens and cougars in my state. We need to clean house, as it were, and make the towns work for our citizens. After all, I too have seen the shows at the kitten theater, and especially the season closing performance, with those cute kittens and kittenettes getting put over their new cougar's laps, before getting their collars. And I want to make sure every little kitten is able to finally earn a cougar to live with." Sarah smiled, and beamed. "Ok Governor. I will get together with some of the other cougars who are here in town, as well as setup a teleconference call for other cougars to join in on, and see what we can come up with, to help re-launch this community. But I can tell you now, one thing that will be essential. We need to make sure that only cougar friendly businesses and individuals are allowed into the town, to ensure we do not scare away any kittens hitchhiking across the highways or coming in by foot. Those precious little kittens are scared enough as it is, and the last thing they need, is some news or religious nutcases trying to scare them away." "Consider it done, Sarah. I will soon be introducing a law to the state assembly, designating the town there, and all land within 10 miles of the town's borders, as a kitten sheltered location, with numerous laws and restrictions, to keep out anyone who may harm or endanger the kittens. Is a 10 mile buffer good enough for the town, and is the town area large enough to handle an influx of cougars, kittens, and cougar friendly businesses?" "We will let you know, Governor." Sarah hung up the phone, and sank into her chair. True, the academy was gone, as she remembered it. But the Governor's gift, the grant, and the promise of protection, seemed like it would quickly be able to resurrect the kitten town, and make it possible for kittens and their cougars to go out, and enjoy their lives much more freely than they had before. Sarah smiled, thinking of what it would mean, to any misbehaving kittens. She smiled, as she thought of the town being dotted with park benches, trees, small parks, and all designed to allow a cougar to bend a naughty kitten over her lap, flip up her skirt, and spank her kitten. Also, of being able to take a cute kitten out on a leash, for a walk, and even being able to take a kitten and make her cream, without having to worry about offending someone. Chapter 4: Rebirth Beginning As Sarah had walked and ridden through the town she had noticed a lot of people had been walking in the direction of the Kitten Academy. She had also noticed quite a few young women who could just as easily be Kitten age, but these young ladies all sported twin swords standing out above their shoulders. "Sarah, I'm glad you're still here," said Mimi St Cloud, her kitten Cythera close beside her on the sidewalk. "Any idea if Tiffany's will reopen?" she asked the neighboring shop owner. "Oh she's at the mansion with her grandmother. I think there are a lot of people there though." The closer she got to the Academy the more she saw. There were even groups of these people in Ford Escapes near the intersections leading to it. And then she saw one in her teens standing beside an old Dodge Challenger just outside the gates. "Violet, Kitten I'm going to ask some questions. So don't let go of my hand, ok?" she said. "Hello Miss...um?" paused a nice young man sitting in one of the Escapes. "Owens, Sarah Owens," she replied as Violet looked wide eyed from her position almost behind her. "Oh thank goodness, just who we have been trying to locate. Hold on a second, please." he spoke into thin air, "Molly, I've located her, she's safe. Should I send them on up to you?" "No Dart, I'll come to you. Has she mentioned anything about how to open these gates? Tribe wants to know how they managed to remove so many buildings." "No I didn't want to spook her by asking, you know how most of these Cougars view guys, especially strangers. She said. A flurry of movement caught Sarah's eyes and she saw a school bus pulling up to the gates behind them. "It's all still there," exclaimed a young cougar that Sarah recognized as Evelyn Reed. "I slid my ID card in the gate box to unlock it and suddenly as the gates opened the Kitten Shelter was standing there." A young kitten pushed past them toward the kitten gate, which was a revolving entrance gate to the right of the guard shack in the middle. "It's gone there's nothing left," she cried as she pushed at the revolving bars, which suddenly moved effortlessly and she stepped through to disappear beyond the line of the gate. "What the hell?" she'd just disappeared. "April, April where are you?" Janice Marconi shrieked in panic at seeing her kitten disappear into the openness beyond the wrought iron fence. Now everyone was watching as three of the young women with swords tried to go through the Kitten gate, which didn't budge. "It's hidden," April exclaimed a few moments later as the Kitten exit gate turned and she stepped out. "April, don't do that again. You had me terrified just disappearing like that." The three skipped off through the Kitten entrance gate. "Mistress Gwendolyn appointed me as the Headmistress, and I was given a list of names of those to be on the Kitten Board of Directors. "Sarah, Janice, and Evelyn, would you join me? Instructions were left on the desk for us in particular, or so I was told." She turned as the gates swung open and the seeming empty space beyond came into view. The old Ivy covered stone buildings still stood in the exact same place as before. Miss Gina looked at the woman Molly. "I understand your patrols are here to help keep us safe. As well as make sure that free range kittens find their way to either here or the Shelter?" "Yes Ma'am," she answered before she was corrected. "Please just call me Gina. And thank you, I understand that your network is spread out around the world. Have you heard from any of the other Kitten Academies?" "Yes Mi.., Gina. Prague and Bangkok have had no difficulties. And Copenhagen has only had minor incidents. But then again, they never had any of the Special Kittens, so they weren't affected the way you were here." Miss Gwendolyn had named her the most knowledgeable person on the town, and its people, and needs. And who were all these people, and what were they doing here? Miss Gina Tyler seemed to know them all, and was ok with them. And they had done nothing to any of the citizens, except help them. She looked down at Violet, and could see her kitten's fears, and her own. Then Sarah remembered what they had learned in the Academy, about an old Chinese Proverb: "May you live in interesting times" and why it was often viewed as a curse. Sarah looked down at Violet, and at Miss Gina. "We are living in interesting times, now, aren't we?" Miss Gina nodded. "That we are Sarah. That we are." Back in town, kittens and the sword carrying crew were out unlocking buildings that had seemed to vanish. The kitten shelter returned, except now it looked like it was new. But it was a completely new building underneath. The old style building materials were gone. Miss Gina, Sarah, Janice, and Evelyn went into the school's administration building, and up to the Headmistress' office. Sarah still felt nervous going to the office, remembering the woman who had organized the school, and how she seemed to have an air of authority that came from deep within. Looking at Miss Gina, Sarah felt that same sense of power coming from her, and knew, things were going to come out all right in the end. Miss Gina, Sarah, Janice, and Evelyn sat at the desk. Each had found an envelope with their names on it. Sarah opened hers, and began to read. My Dear Sarah, I know there was not a lot of time to tell you all of what was going to happen when we said our goodbyes. Heck, I didn't know myself, what all was going to be possible with this new technology. As I understand it, some of our buildings were deemed "essential" by someone high up here, so copies were fabricated, when they were packed up. But they're not exactly like the old buildings. I guess there are some stricter building codes in the wider universe that outlaw some building materials. So what will be found, will look like the old buildings, but they're insides, frames, wiring, and on will be totally new. It is imperative that Earth Contractors not find out about the new buildings capabilities, just yet. Not until such time as our kittens in college, learning about structural engineering and other fields, are able to process the data, and begin working to manufacture the materials on Earth. So it is likely to be a secret for the next 40 years. I am telling you and the others about this, for some very practical reasons. First off, the Kitten Theater, Kitten Shelter, Academy, Jewelers, and the all important Kitten Uniform shop, have been redone using this process. I am sure Violet has noticed some subtle differences in her lighting panels, and in how the lights have been wired, since you both got back. Secondly, since some of these buildings have been redone, updated security protocols have been put in place around them. The old Kitten Locks, which are important to helping runaway kittens and girls find safe places to stay, have been kept simple but updated to send a text message to the building's owner when the lock is tripped. This way, there won't be any surprises waiting to be found, or risk of injury to a runaway kitten. Third, Miss Gina now has a special Kitten Safe Place sign design, to help guide lost and scared kittens, to these designated shelters. Should they avoid the Free Alpha Alliance patrols, a feat few could do, the kittens will be guided to the shelters, using the signs we have placed on the buildings. I think they're rather cleaver, myself. They look like a mother and daughter, holding hands, with KITTEN SAFETY written beneath it. Finally, I know the Governor either has been in touch, or will be shortly, to offer some money for the rebuilding of the town. While I cannot tell you what to do, I would recommend that you take the money, and use it to begin upgrading the town's roads, power, and other utilities. I believe the alliance will be sending down a construction company, to setup shop on the edge of town. Their primary job is going to be making a hidden perimeter system around the town, to host some other projects. However, they are likely to be under orders, to act like an Earth Based Business, when construction jobs are offered by the Town. So that means, my lovely Sarah, that using the state's money, you could have the most modern town, in the world in terms of infrastructure. No more broken water mains, blackouts, or other headaches. Each of the women with you, have been given a job, as deemed appropriate by the ruling bodies here. Obviously, Miss Gina, will be running the School. I am sure you could sense the change in demeanor when you entered her office. Evelyn is going to be taking over the Kitten Shelter. I think she likes the younger kittenettes, and likes the idea of being a mother to them, and setting them up for future success. Janice, and her kitten April, is going to be running the uniform shop. Janice, if I remember correctly, had a love of uniforms and designing outfits that made a kitten feel special, but also could make them feel exposed and weak, when it was time for a bare bottom spanking. As for you Sarah, we all remember with love, the Kitten Ballet. And I know Miss Gina loved to watch the little Kittens and Kittenettes get their spankings, before their collars. But, we have another job in mind for you. We want you to run for Mayor. I know it is a lot to take in, and process. But the three of you, Miss Gina, and the Free Alpha Alliance, are all that is currently standing between the Kittens and Kittenettes, the cougars, and the forces that want to destroy a way of life. Now, we have received word, that the Governors of the states have begun to oppose the federal agents, and named a few trusted Police and Sheriff's Deputies to key posts, to act as an extra layer of protection, but the last bastion of truly free Cougar and Kitten life, is there in the town.
