How is this possible? Personally, I never imagined that anything like
this was even a possibility. It was so cruel. As I sit here in my soft
blue blouse and my simple white skirt waiting for my husband to return
from his trip, I scream in frustration at what has happened.
Oh, my husband? I guess you are confused and maybe I should explain.
It all started many years ago when I was a youth living with my mother in
her castle. My mother was Jane. If anyone had told me she would only
spent 9 days as the queen before she was disposed by her sister I might
had treated her sister better. I didn't know, and I hated her sister
Mary. I did not disguise my disgust for that horrible woman. So, when my
mother was led away in chains, all her advisers were beheaded and I was
arrested, it was a surprise.
Then My mother was executed after she refused to comply with the queens
orders and I suspected my time was coming. I spent my days praying in my
cell awaiting my turn on the executioners block.
That was when the queen and her soldiers came into my cell and gave me an
ultimatum. Her bright red cloke and regal face. She glared down at me and
told me I had a choice. Either I live the rest of my life as a woman or I
will be executed.
I was horrified and astonished she could suggest such a thing. Here she
is, this queen Mary Tudor whos power rests on the fact that she is an
extreme fanatical catholic, disposed her protestant sister over that
fact. She is busy burning heretics across England and she is here
suggesting that I change my very sex. Didn't the church have laws against
such things?
She smiled and said yes but she wanted me to pay for humiliating her in
front of the Privy Council and her administrators. She wanted me to pay a
big price for what I said to her.
Had I known what being a woman in this country would mean, I might had
chosen the chopping block. I chose to live as a woman.
That was when several ladies and soldiers drug me out of my cell and
began the transformation from my life as a young prince to a noble woman.
I already had nothing so I had to have a new ladies wardrobe.
My initial transformation was rough. That took over a year under a harsh
disciplinarian and her attendants. They trained me in everything I needed
to know about being a woman. If I dressed myself wrong, if I made a wrong
gesture or said the wrong thing, or messed up on my makeup, I received
lashing over the post. I learned everything I needed over the next year
to conduct myself as a woman. I was then freed.
I learned another very harsh lesson once I was free. I was not free.
Being a woman in England at this time meant that if I didn't have a
husband I had nothing. I was unable to get any employment. No means to
support myself. I could not legally have possessions, money or property
in my name. I had to find a husband and a husband was provided for me
when I asked. Luckily, he knew who and what I was, and accepted it.
The marriage took place in the cathedral. The vows were said, I accepted
his ring and that night I was consummated in one of the most humiliating
events of my life. My life from then on belonged to him. I was no longer
James Gray. I had not been James for over a year. The queen had my name
changed to Isabella Gray. Upon my wedding, I became Isabella Tudor. My
husband is a Tudor.
Luckily, Mary Tudors reign didn't last long and she was disposed by her
other Sister Elisabeth. She was a protestant and she claimed she would
end the persecutions. She didn't end persecutions in any way. She
persecuted all of Marys supports and Catholics across the country cowered
in terror. That didn't mean in any way I would be free. No one knew about
me and Elizabeth had all of Marys attendants and counselors executed.
Everyone who knew about my plight was dead. So now no one knew I am
really a man and to try to come out and tell people might be a bad thing
for my life. Actually I can't. My husband won't let me out of his sight
and when he's gone, he has his guards keep careful watch over me. Even if
I was allowed out to talk, who would listen to me? If anyone would
believe I was a crossdressed man with a husband, what would they do to me
them? I don't know, but a chopping block or a session with the inquisitor
to confess my heresy comes to mind. My very life is a blasphemous sin
according to the strict rules of the church.
How has my life turned out so bad? My only sin was that I was the son of
Jane Gray. Why was that such an awful thing?
Authors note. This was a silly idea I had for a story. Yes I know Jane
Gray was a teenager when she became the Queen of England so she had no
sons yet.
I am really hoping that I do get some responces from this short story. Is
it any good or is it the dumbest idea you ever heard of? Would you like
to see it expanded into something more in depth? I could but I would have
to do some intensive reserch on English society in the 16th century,
fashions their attitudes and people of the time. I dont know jack about
it. Thats why this story is so short.
