I.The Strange Death of David Parmenter

7. Summation
It was now nearing the end of the fourth week since David Parmenter had
entered the LRP program. He had been cocooned inside a state of the art
body suit which had, by then, bonded with his skin, and following its
programmed instructions, had shaped him into young woman, both on the
outside and the inside. Even his DNA was slowly being replaced by that
programmed into the invasive secretions of the body suit; soon every cell
of his body would be genetically female. Her hair had grown rapidly, and
each day, she would awake to find less masculinity and more femininity
staring back from the mirror. Her sex organs had been transformed into
that of a woman, and soon, the formation of functioning ovaries would be
complete.
Her mental and emotional conditioning had likewise continued. Her mental
outlook had changed dramatically and she had, more or less, completely
accepted her new situation. Mostly gone were the thoughts of who she had
been, and the life she had lived before. They now occupied a back corner
of her memory. Instead, they were replaced by thoughts of the future. It
was an odd and sometimes confusing mixture of the wanting to move on with
her exciting new life and obtain some sense of equilibrium, along with her
newly instilled female desires and the conditioning intended to minimize
her remembrances of her past. More and more she desired to leave the
facility and be once again in the outside world.
With the help of both Dr. Abele and Nurse Debra, Sandi had adapted quickly
to embracing looking the part on the outside. Soon after their catalog
session in Abele's office, Sandi's wardrobe had arrived. While closely
observed by both the nurse and Patterson from their adjacent control room,
Sandi seemed delighted. She spent the better part of a whole day trying
on the various outfits and accouterments. Similarly, she seemed to take a
keen interest in such other feminine activities such as experimenting with
different make-up styles, hair styling, and skin care.
And so late that fourth week, Patterson, Abele and Nurse Debra met in the
conference room to discuss Sandi's progress. Patterson began by
describing the progress of the physical changes. In her professional
opinion, Sandi Taylor was now a woman. Physically she could not be
distinguished from someone born and raised female, even by the closest
examination from a skilled gynecologist. Within a few weeks, even her
genetics would give no clue about her previous being. Following
Patterson, Abele began the discussion about Sandi's mental and emotional
health. She had made great progress, faster than most of their patients,
in accepting her new situation. But some doubt remained in Abele's mind
as to Sandi's potential reactions if and when confronted by the inevitable
male attention she would receive. Would she be able to handle it? Accept
it? Or would such events drive her into depression and potentially to
suicide?
Nurse Debra disagreed with Dr. Abele. Her informal conversations with
Sandi had given her the impression that she was ready to accept that part
of her new life as well. The nurse told of Sandi's recent and frequent
comments about men that would appear while they watched television
together, and her likewise frequent questions to Debra about men, and how
to react to them. She seemed curious and enlivened during these
conversations, rather than fearful.
So it was decided to move forward with the doctors' plans to observe Sandi
in a social situation. During her afternoon session with Abele, Sandi was
informed that there would soon be a small office party to celebrate the
doctor's birthday. Abele expressed her desire for Sandi to attend, to
which she quickly and enthusiastically agreed. She had been cooped-up in
that place, only seeing two or three rooms, for a month already, and was
beginning to go a little stir-crazy. The affair would take place the
following Monday afternoon and evening in the conference room.
With some gentle reminders and prodding from the nurse the day before,
Sandi began to plan for the party. She was told that Abele would be off
that morning, so Sandi had all day to prepare. Little did she realize
that Patterson, Abele and Nurse Debra were watching her in her
preparations. In the little adjacent control room, they crowded around
the monitor to watch as Sandi tried on outfit after outfit, often
disappearing into the bathroom, presumably to look in the mirror. "She
seems rather excited, wouldn't you agree? Very feminine-like." asked
Abele.
""Humm, yes it would seem so," replied Patterson with her typical scowl,
"but there are not men involved yet. We shall see..."
So it was that on the afternoon of the Monday of the fifth week, Nurse
Debra entered Sandi's room to collect her for the party. Sandi appeared
from the bathroom, and the nurse was stunned by what she saw. Standing in
front of her was a beautiful young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes.
She was wearing a nice not-too-formal mid-thigh royal blue dress with
black hose and modest heels. Her now long straight hair had been pulled
forward over her left shoulder, and her make-up was perfectly done, and
not overdone in the least. Around her neck was a single strand of pearls
which set off her lovely neckline. Matching pearls adorned her ears as
well. "Perfect!" thought Debra.
"Shall we go, girlfriend?" she asked Sandi with a little giggle.
"You bet," was the reply as Sandi walked forward, and talking the nurse's
arm they moved out of the room together and into the long hallway.
Sandi's thoughts were about the farthest thing away from David Parmenter
as they could be. As she entered the conference room she observed about a
dozen people milling around the room, most of which were holding drinks,
and all of whom suddenly together turned and yelled, "SURPRISE!" Sandi
was startled and looked at Debra who was wearing a broad smile. "What?
What's all this?" cried Sandi with some trepidation. Then she saw on the
conference table a large cake reading "Congratulations Sandi."
Abele rushed up to her and embracing her said, "It's graduation time
dear." Sandi could smell the alcohol on her breath. Taking Sandi by the
arm, she turned and presented her to the rest of the crowd who
spontaneously burst into applause and smiles. Abele then made a short
speech:
"We are here today to celebrate the outing of our newest graduate and
citizen, Sandra Lorraine Taylor. As most of you recall, Sandi came here
about a month ago. She came to us to give her a second chance at life,
free from fear. Over the past month, we have poked her and prodded her,
and Debra here has absolutely delighted in continually sticking her with
needles." The group gave a subdued communal laugh, while Debra looked
down in embarrassment. "But she has prevailed and today, we celebrate her
success. Sandi has progressed, both physically and emotionally to the
point where we feel she is ready to leave us and resume a normal life. So
here's to you Sandi. Long may you waive." she said as she turned and
lifted her glass. The others in the room followed suit with a "here here"
sounding throughout the room. "We are very proud of you and your
accomplishments. Over the next few days, we'll be getting you up to speed
on your new job and location, but for now, let's have some fun!" And
again a hearty "here here" came from the crowd as they turned back to the
conversations they had been having. Sandi began to tear up, embarrassed
by all the attention. Somehow it just felt completely natural to cry a
little.
In the back of the room, someone turned on the music while each of the
group began to funnel up to Sandi to offer their personal congratulations.
Sandi did not notice the slight head nod that Patterson made to the young
man at the other side of the room. He acknowledged with a similar nod of
his head.

Sandi had never seen her like this before. Was that really Doctor
Patterson, the toad-like squat of a woman who had seemed to be so reserved
and serious in all their previous encounters? Now there she was, laughing
and drinking and, yes, even flirting with some of the staff. She was
moving about the room, insinuating herself into others' conversations,
always to return to Sandi with a bottle in her hand. Time and again she
would sally forth only to return to check on her patient, and each time
re-filling Sandi's glass when she did. It didn't take too long before
Sandi began to feel the effects of the alcohol. Little did Sandi realize
that Patterson herself was not actually drinking at all.
As the party progressed, and the attendees became more 'lubricated',
dancing ensued. Sandi repeatedly turned away men who asked her to dance;
a behavior not lost on both Patterson and a "stewed" Abele. But
eventually, the cake was eaten, the congratulations had been expressed,
and the little group began to thin out; soon only a half dozen remained.
It was then that Sandi noticed a handsome young man standing in the back
corner of the room with a drink in his hand. Their eyes met, and he
smiled at her. In her inebriated condition, she could only stare back at
him, as he slowly moved toward the CD player, and replaced the thumping
driving rock music with the coolness of Nat King Cole. She watched as he
slowly moved along the edge of the big table toward her. Approaching, he
said, "Hello. I don't think we've been introduced but my name is Steve.
I've been preparing your meals while you've been here."
Wobbling a bit, Sandi thrust her hand forward to shake his. Patterson
looked at Abele, and shook her head slightly; a woman should let the man
make the first move, she was thinking. Sandi replied, "Hello, I'm Sandra
Lorraine Taylor." Then they both laughed as they simultaneously realized
that he already knew that very well. The ice having been broken, he
asked, "Would you like to dance?"
"Ohhh well, I..." and she looked over a Debra who had also been watching
her. The nurse motioned with her head and mouthed silently, "go ahead".
Looking back to Steve she seemed to get fixated by his eyes. She just
stared at him, until finally he spoke up, "Come on, it's a slow song and
I'll be gentle."
What was this feeling she was having? Back and forth, back and forth she
vacillated. A small part of her was saying - whoa, this is just too
weird, while another part seemed to be drawn to him. But still she
couldn't answer. So he took her wrist and placed it on his shoulder.
Then he placed his other hand on her waist. "There, now that's not so bad
is it?" he asked. Then applying just enough force to get her to follow
along with him he began to move them back and forth. Confusion reigned
within her, and yet...
The seductive music, the alcohol and the gently swaying of her body
eventually won the day. She began to move with him more and soon had
placed her hand other on his shoulder. Formal at first, little by little
she felt drawn to him. Closer and closer she held herself toward him,
until they finally were in full contact. He had let his hand slip down
from hers so that he was now holding her with both hands by the waist,
while she brought both hands up behind his neck. Rocking slowly to the
music, she nevertheless felt flushed and excited. Soon they were moving
together as one to the rolling tempo of the cool music. Without even
thinking about it, she pulled him close, and turning her head to the side,
rested it on his shoulder while wrapping both arms around his waist.
Together they rocked back and forth.
When the song drew to a close, it found them still in each others' arms.
Even after the music ended, they stood locked together for a moment.
Sandi felt lost in the moment. Her mind raced forward to envision the
inevitable outcome of such encounters. But instead of being repulsed by
these thoughts, this time she somehow felt a burning desire to get there.
She felt warm and safe in his arms, and wanted to stay there.
Again Patterson, Abele and Nurse Debra exchanged glances and nods.
As the couple slowly pulled apart, Sandi looked up into his eyes. Both
knew what would happen next, and now she welcomed it. Ever so slowly they
closed their eyes and leaned forward. Their lips touched and an
overpowering shot of electricity burst through her head and consciousness.
She became weak in the knees and started to wilt, but sensing this, Steve
broke off the kiss and held her up. She stepped back slightly and looking
down said, "Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over
me."
"Sandi, it's alright," he said reassuringly. "I really kinda enjoyed it.
I hope you did to." But she was too embarrassed to answer.
Following a pregnant pause she said looking up, "Uhhh, I better get going.
Like the doctor said, I've got a big day tomorrow." Then turning toward
the others she saw all three women staring at her, smiling. Abele gave
her a big 'thumbs up' sign, while Debra gave a silent little clap of her
hands.
"Yes, I suppose you're right, he said. "I hope to see you again before you
leave, but just in case I don't, I want to wish you the best of luck in
your new life." Then he leaned forward again and gave her a little peck
on the cheek. Instinctively as he did, she let her eyes close to savor
the moment. He turned, bowed slightly toward Patterson and said, "Doctor..."
and then left.
Immediately Abele and Debra rushed to her side. "Well, looks like you've
arrived Sandi," said an inebriated Abele. Debra patted her on the back.
"He is a cutie, isn't he?" asked Debra. And the three began a low volume
giggling and gossiping match.
Patterson, still a distance away, stared with her typical serious and
analytical gaze, but inside she was beaming with pride as she knew that
she had, once again, saved someone from a certain death, and given her a
completely new life free from fear. She was ecstatic, but of course,
would never show it overtly. And as the other three women left the room,
only she remained. She looked around at the empty plastic cups, paper
plates and spoiled napkins, and the demolished cake. Then walking over to
the sideboard, picked up an open bottle of champagne, downed a large slug
directly from the bottle, and taking it with her, slowly left the room
with a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Her work was done.
EPILOG
Sandra Lorraine Taylor walked up the off-loading ramp of her plane at
Dulles. She had left the San Diego facility earlier that day after a
tearful goodbye to the entire staff, which had all turned out to wish her
off. All, that is, except for Patterson. She had not shown up to work
that day, and no one seemed to know of her whereabouts. But there was no
time for Sandi to worry about that.
As she approached the door leading into the terminal, and afterwards on
the subway to the main terminal, she felt a bit uncomfortable. Looking
around, she thought she was being scrutinized by everyone she saw. Did he
know her secret? That woman over there seems to be staring. Can they
tell she was once a man? But there was little she could do about her
queasiness; she just had to power on.
She had been set-up with a job working at the Smithsonian's Air and Space
Museum Annex near the Dulles airport. There, she was to assist the Head
Curator in research about the various planes on display. And although she
had not seen it yet, the LRP program had set her up in a nice condo not
far away, and gave her a large advance for the purchase of a new car. She
had been furnished with new ID papers, including a certified birth
certificate, valid passport, college transcripts, and Virginia driver's
license. They even established a bank account for her which included a
hefty advance. She was set.
After retrieving her luggage from the lower level, she stepped out into
the loading area in front of the modern-looking main terminal. Following
the little signs, she had soon acquired a cab that would take her to her
new home.
As the cabby was loading the bags into the trunk, she stopped and looked
up at the soaring structure. Here she was, a new woman, just about to
embark on a new life; a life so completely different from that she had
known for her entire existence. Yet, in spite of the quiver of
trepidation, when she turned to see the cabby holding the door open for
her, she smiled and realized that the great adventure was about to begin.
Pausing to look at him for a second, it suddenly became clear to her that
everything would be alright. There was nothing more to fear. Sandi
Taylor was alive and well, and was looking forward to whatever lay ahead.
