I was almost as tall as Katy now. It felt like an accomplishment.

Today's date was circled in green. Tomorrow's was red. I knew what the
green was about. I had anticipated this date with both excitement and
dread for a month, but I wasn't sure about the red.
As I pondered, Katy stepped out of the bathroom in a towel. Old instincts
told me to turn away, to get out of the room, to give my daughter her
privacy.
Instead I flushed with embarrassment as she examined me.
"There's no reason to be embarrassed, dad," I bristled, glancing to the
window. Katy caught my expression and corrected herself. "No reason to be
embarrassed, sis."
That was just as humiliating, but at least it would satisfy the Overmind.
I stepped around her, feeling my nightie flutter against my thighs. Had I
ever allowed Katy to wear something this short, even to bed? I must've.
It had been in the collection of things she'd given me the day I moved
into her room.
I showered quickly; there wasn't much time, and besides I didn't want to
dwell on the changes to my body. But the water hitting my chest quickly
made me aware of some of the more prominent differences.
Yelping I covered my nipples. Today was the day. Marta had speculated it
would happen on my first day of school, and she'd been right.
Katy raised an eyebrow when I came out of the bathroom, towel hanging
from my waist. The little cones of flesh on my chest to bobbed free for a
few more minutes.
I waited for her to echo her mother. "Girls don't go around with their
chests uncovered, even in private," she'd told me earlier. "You need to
learn that."
Instead, Katy gestured to the clothing she'd left out on the bed for me.
"That's my spare uniform. It should fit you fine."
We both knew it would.
Katy had laid the uniform out before getting into her own. Like her
mother, she was developing early. I wondered how long it would be until
we were sharing all our clothing, and not just school uniforms and
nightgowns.
Behind me, there was a sharp intake of breath. Oops. As I'd reached to
touch the uniform, I'd let the towel fall. The air on my hairless legs,

"You forgot underwear," I murmured, not turning around.
When I took the panties from her, I caught her sneaking peeks at my

"Bye mom!" Katy said, holding the door for me.
"Bye, mom." It was still hard to say. It was even hard to look at her,
standing in her robe in the kitchen. Normally, she'd be dressed by now,

"What are you thinking about?" Katy and I were on our way to the bus

directions were very clear: if a man is chosen, you treat him as what he

bag (it matched Katy's) contained a student ID with my new status and

All the old markers of my status, like my driver's license and my bank
card, had either been canceled or moved over to Marta's name.
On the bus, I sat with Katy near the back, a group of her friends
surrounding us. I licked my lips, tasting cherry. No one was talking to
me, and that was just fine. I hugged my bag to my chest and stared out
the window.
To the best of anyone's knowledge, I was one of the first of the
Overmind's chosen. In a sane world, the changes to my body would have
landed me in a research lab, not my daughter's high school. If I had been
sent back to school, the headlines would have screamed it, and on my
first day the media would have been waiting for me to arrive.
The Overmind had taken care of all that. It wanted me to have a nice,
normal day.
The bell rang. I shuffled my bag to my other shoulder and followed my
daughter inside. We shared a locker.
"Dani?" At first I didn't respond. It was the name printed on my student
ID, but it still wasn't mine.
"Sorry, spaced out for a second. What's up?? She had the locker open and
was loading it with books for her afternoon classes. Following her lead,
I did the same.
"Can you come to the bathroom for me? We have a few minutes, and there's
something I forgot to tell you."
The last place I wanted to be was in a bathroom full of teenage girls. I
might have looked like one, but I didn't feel much like one. But Katy's
expression was so earnest I followed her without question.
It wasn't that crowded inside, but each stall was occupied. Katy pulled
me in front of a sink next to a girl doing her hair.
Before I could speak, she thrust something plastic-wrapped into my hand.
Seeing what it was, I lowered my voice and leaned closer. "There's,
there's no reason for it."
But there was a reason, and I saw it in Katy's stare. The Overmind. The
red circle on the calendar.
One of the stalls was free now. My daughter gestured to it and I went
inside. Sitting on the closed toilet lid, I gazed between my legs, to the
cotton gusset suspended from one ankle to the other.
I could smell hairspray, and perfume, and hear the high-pitched gossip I
was now expected to follow. Katy had promised to introduce me to the
popular girls.
Outside, I found her waiting for me, and we were only a few seconds late
for homeroom. The pad in my underwear bunched when I sat, and when I was
called to introduce myself to the class, I tried not to waddle as I made
my way to the front.
"Hi, I'm Dani, and I love One Direction."
It was what my daughter had told me to say, if I wanted to fit in. And I
