Suzy, and she avoided mentioning her other name Wong for obvious reasons,
was sharp as a tack. While pretty much every male who walked into the

denying it but instead insisting that he had another identity just
reinforced her first impression. He may or may not have known his status;
but Suzy knew.
Suzy had been the oldest daughter with an older brother in a small
village in rural China. None of the boys in the village held the
slightest interest to her. The monks had suggested to her father that
they would be happy to make inquiries in some of the larger villages
nearby for a suitable husband. Suzy had another plan.
While her farther was a simple farmer, he had a another part time job,
profession almost. He was the designated forager in a plot of land owned
by the monks. It was a job handed down to him from many generations. It
would go to his son. And soon actually as her father's eyesight was going
now. Indeed, recently he had made a mistake and picked the wrong plant.
This time his son had not corrected him and allowed it to be passed on to
the monks. Had her brother allowed it on purpose? Was he plotting to
force the transition of title? His family was growing. He likely needed
the income more than her father. His wife was probably leaning on him. It
mattered nothing to Suzy. She had a plan.
The herb of note here is known now to to grow in only a very few places
in China. It requires a very old growth forest of at least a couple
centuries. The monks were the trustees of a small patch of just such a
forest. The plant grew within three feet a decaying trunk of a particular
tree during the years seven through eighteen of decay. It was used to
treat a very specific and very rare and often fatal liver disease. As
such the demand was small. But when needed it had to be picked fresh. The
cure was miraculous and side effect free. When there was demand the price
was very great.
Suzy and her brother always accompanied her father on the gathering
trips. By now they were both as good a he at finding the plant. The woods
were small enough that they knew where all the fallen trees were located
and the years in which they had fallen. They even kept track of which
trees might become the next ones to fall. Since the work was not hard and
most anyone could have done it, the monks had made the knowledge secret
and created the position of designated forager. The forest plot itself
was considered sacred by the monks and all the surrounding villages.
During the Maoist times when there was danger that they might lose
control of the forest they had briefly passed title to the land to Suzy's
grandfather.
Usually her father took the plants to the monks by himself. But one time
there had come an urgent request. Suzy and her brother and her father had
all gone together straight from the woods to deliver the plants to the
monks. The urgency was so great that when they arrived Suzy had watched
as the monks had wrapped the plants in silk and placed it directly in an
addressed box held by the messenger who immediately sped away.
Two years later she made her way to the memorized address on the box. Dr.
Ming's office in Shanghai was bustling with crazy activity that day. Dr.
Ming, herself, was finishing preparations for her return to her offices
in America. The fact that a poor peasant girl had just walked in from the
provinces and was immediately making herself useful, while ignored, did
not go unnoticed. Six months later when Dr. Ming returned to China for
her month of China work, she was not surprised to find Suzy still there
in a paid position. That Suzy had on her own decided that her tiny bit of
English needed improvement was noted as well.
Her ability to fit in and her willingness to take initiative in and of
themselves might have been enough to convince Dr. Ming to bring Suzy to
America. But one other fact cemented the deal. In certain areas of China
there is a tradition of what I will call "ladygirl". How others may use
the word are of no matter to this story. It is a rough translation from
the original Chinese. I could have chosen any of several other words
because I will be supplying my own unique meanings for the word. Keep in
mind that we are describing a tradition here and all of its attendant
facets and rolling them into the single concept or word, "ladygirl".
Suzy was from a province where the ladygirl tradition was still in
practice. Secretly, to be sure, and perhaps even more secretly than
historically, but still there were people, well women really, who met and
carried on a kind of ritual set of practices. I will not say more as I
will let the story do that work. The important fact is that Suzy had
exposure to the tradition. When Dr. Ming learned where Suzy was raised
she took her aside and asked several direct questions of Suzy. It was
then that the decision to bring Suzy to America was struck.
Suzy was brought in on a tourist visa. That she stayed beyond its
expiration was a source of power over her that Dr. Ming did not hesitate
to use. Suzy's burgeoning skills became her own source of power
independent of Dr. Ming. The two maintained a close relationship.
