time, they had become very good friends. Britney had learned about
Alice's stepfather, Tom, after the last time her friend had had an
explosive conversation with him. Turned out her mother had died soon
after their marriage and now he was Alice's only relative. They didn't
get on well together and Alice could barely wait to graduate and be out
from under his thumb. He apparently shared the sentiment. Though now it
seemed they would be going their separate ways much sooner.
Alice sank to the bed, tears running down her cheeks. Britney sat down
next to her and wrapped an arm around her friend. "Trouble with
stepdad?" she asked.

Britney let the silence build for a while. Then she said, "You know, I
may know about a job for you but...."
"But, what?" Alice prompted.
"It's just...Nah. Forget I said anything," Britney replied.
"No, what were you going to say?" Alice insisted.
Britney pursed her lips for a moment, as if deliberating something and
then said, "I may know a place. It's not exactly on the up and up, but
you'll get cash, lots of it, for very little work. They'll also give you
all the training you need."
"I don't know," Alice replied. "What do you mean by not on the up and
up? I don't want to get in trouble."
Britney sighed. "Look, its not a big deal. Its just something you might
want to think about."
Alice looked away and said, "Okay, but I think I'd like to be alone
now."
Britney got up at that and walked to the door. She hesitated for a
moment, wondering if she should say anything more, but then decided
against it. She walked out and left Alice to her thoughts. She had
planted the seed. She would wait and see what came of it.
One week later, Alice came into Britney's dorm room. She walked in and

Part 2: The Interview
Two hours later, the girls stood under a large, lit neon sign. A neon

go down to check on them. Good thing I was there to stall him."
Will's frown deepened. "Hang on, you stalled him? But you weren't
even..." His eyes widened as realization came over him. "Sandra??" he
exclaimed. Hank turned to wink at his partner. "Couldn't let you go in
alone, now could I? After all..." he said as he opened the door, "you're
