Earta Prime, the Resistance
By: Candi Sue
Sol Parallel three, 'Earta' the primary planet has fallen to machine
based invaders bent on the harvesting of all humanoid life to be
processed and shipped as slaves and food for their cannibalistic
Creators throughout the rest of the universe.
Small groups of resistance fighters scattered across the planet's
surface continue to fight for freedom and rescue others scattered in
the ruins of the great cities. This is the story of but a tiny handful
of those freedom fighters, and what makes them successful.
In the late stages of the war, just prior to the collapse of the
world's militaries, certain facts about the few aliens captured shed
light on how they might be defeated.
The problem was that there weren't really that many humans with the
right Chromosomal patterns. The aliens controlling the machines had an
XXY Chromosomal pattern.
Those humans overlooked by the machines in the beginning were
themselves XXY and Transgenders taking Hormones. Further research by
the international GLBT determined that Transgendered persons taking
hormones tended to be passed over when the machines made their sweeps
looking for refugees and Resistance fighters.
The machines controlled the surface, while the humans survived
underground. Only Trans could hope to carry the fight to the enemy, to
rescue those trapped in small groups. The prejudices of society now
found the masses very salvation dependent on those they had persecuted
over the centuries.
Rogue Seven Twenty, a team of Trans women was just that. Malissa Madson
the team leader, Mona Dearly her driver/navigator, Candice 'Candi' Zinc
the Gunner and secondary Team leader of Seven Twenty Alpha, and Ingrid
Cruise her driver/navigator.
The team had been out half the night, and now sat doing maintenance.
Rogue Central known as Lifeline had sent them on a run to scout the
other side of town. Malissa knew why they were being sent out there
into another teams sector.
She'd disobeyed an order from Lifeline. They'd escorted a nine civilian
vehicles to the big portal twenty miles away. A portal that her baby
sister said she could open. They were taking advantage of the drop in
droid activity to get them there. Still it wasn't until two other
teams, Seven Forty Six and Seven Five had jumped in that got them
there.
True to her word Missy had gotten the centuries dead Portal to spool up
with a loud crash as buildings and things built too close were
destroyed by the spinning cylinders. Only five of the vehicles made it
through before the Hunter Craft had arrived overhead.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In the early days of the war, the droids had converted the big Semi's
to become self-driven supply transportation since most were already
near self-aware with electronic controls. The few that had been
operated by Trans Drivers though had hidden their drivers since the
droids couldn't detect them easily. It had been nothing for those
drivers to keep control of their trucks, since the drivers were still
alive.
Reader knew she didn't have long, she'd seen the creatures overseeing
the harvesting of brain tissue. There were just four of them in the
little holding area, and the Skecksies were over confident that their
systems were secure. When she felt the portal opening, they were
distracted and she managed to get to one of the computer terminals. She
sent her message, then using ancient codes she'd learned at her
mother's knee she input the virus leaving their system open in hopes
that these primitive humans could take advantage of it.
Hope soared in her heart when the truck, 'Satin Nights' responded to
the request for help.
Stephaney had taken advantage of the diversion created when her sisters
had made the run for the portal. She and another driver she was close
to had actually found the location of the central Harvesting Lab where
the Droids dissected human brains to create more of their kind. They
were discussing how to pull off a rescue when her truck informed her
that he'd just gotten a call for help.
But they had to go in on foot, which meant leaving their trucks to
rescue the children that were being murdered for creation of new
Droids. It had been one of those children who had sent the message and
their location to Satin Nights.
Satin Nights and Flower Child sat waiting. Both big trucks feeding
information to their drivers who were now armed only with hand
blasters, picking their way into the underground facility.
They made it in undetected, the girl Reader had gotten hold of a Tablet
and was guiding them. Opening security doors to get them inside.
It was getting them out that became the problem.
One of the girls had screamed when they ran into a patrol of Droids.
Section by section they fought until they reached the surface again. It
was the open ground between the entrance and the trucks that had cost
them. Tess had picked up a blast rifle giving them cover fire. But
she'd been cut down before she could reach Flower Child.
Her last dying breath she said, "Tess, Driver, releasing control to
whoever sits in my seat first." then as the Droids stood over her
Stephaney saw the trigger spoon of the Osmium Grenades as they
clattered to the concrete.
The girls had followed her into Satin Nights, and only because Flower
refused to let anyone else have control did they escape. The twenty
tons of precious fuel and Ammunition he carried exploded blocking
pursuit.
Stephaney had paused long enough at an entrance to Lifeline to let the
other three girls get out and make it to safety. Reader had refused to
leave though. She didn't want to be a refugee any longer.
Like her sister Malissa she found herself with very little support from
Lifeline and the other Rogues. Nor would Lifeline give her the new
codes to contact them.
Reader was busy, constantly at the computer inputting some kind of code
and directing it at the Droids Communications antennas, while she tried
to find Rogue Seven Twenty.

Now Candi sat at her work bench, the stylus in her hand scraping the
particles of copper, lead and brass from the bolt rails of the twin M-
90 machineguns that were normally mounted atop her FAV, an armored Dune
Buggy salvaged from a National Guard Depot sixty miles away. She
chatted away with her Navigator, Ingrid, about problems with traction
on the litter covered streets.
With a lot of sarcasm Ingrid responded with, "Yes I'm aware of all that
Candice, but what would you have us do, run street sweepers? It's not
like we can just go out there and start sweeping the streets clean and
not run into trouble."
"There's so much junk scattered everywhere, it makes navigation
treacherous," complained Candi. "And don't ever call me Candice again!"
the two had been bickering from day one when they'd rescued Ingrid from
a Scavenger Gang. It had only been three months since they rescued Mona
and then salvaged the second FAV and the extra guns that now set ready
for use. Each FAV had three full sets already mounted in quick change
pedestals that let them change an entire pair at a time, reducing how
long it took to get up and operational again when they had a
malfunction.
"Yeah well I saw one of those hunks of junk that might yield the parts
we need to fix up the bus, think about that. Wouldn't it be nice to be
able to get all those refugees out of the subway station downtown?"
Lifeline had sent out requests to locate parts for a bus, saying it was
needed to get the refugees safely out of the old bus terminal.
"Like they'd accept help from us?" snorted Candi. "At least the
children don't hate us." Candi could still see the little redheaded
girl scrambling out from under wrecked cars to grab the Rations she'd
tossed to a small group as they passed by.
"Is that why you keep accidentally dropping food packets when we go
past there?" asked Ingrid. "That little urchin is so cute." She
mentioned the little girl who always seemed to be close by whenever
they passed.
"Yeah well the minute they learn why she never gets caught by the
Droids will be the day I stop giving them any support. You know how
they view us."
In her heart Candi wanted to grab the girl and take her away with them.
But that would mean putting her in danger, or leaving her behind every
time they went on a mission. Could she handle that? What if something
happened to her?
A silent alarm flashed on the screen as the lights went out. They could
hear the drone of the hovering Hunter craft overhead. They were making
another sweep, that was four already today and it wasn't even noon yet.
Something was up and I didn't like the feel of it. Candi hit the
external monitors that were linked into the old City Security cameras.
"What are they hunting, Candi?" asked Ingrid.
"People, the same as always," answered the young woman seconds before
the Ion Cannons began blasting away outside. They were after a human or
humans.
Most teams wouldn't risk losing a safe house just to save one human.
Not with the Droids in such heavy concentration anyway. Then the
monitor flickered to a nearby street, a child, darting in and out
between the hulks of dead cars and trucks running from the Droids.
"Oh Shit," Candi and I both scrambled up into the FAVs. One pair of
spare guns had been mounted before Candi had started the maintenance on
her primary pair. Now she grabbed both bolt levers pulling them back,
charging the guns before Ingrid was behind the wheel.
It wasn't the big cannons of the hover ships. These were the smaller
cannons of the Droids on the ground. Too many for the girl to escape
very long. She was too far away from an entrance to the underground
Maintenance tunnels.
The blast doors sprang open as the FAVs lurched out onto the street.
Half the droids turning in our direction, cut down under the guns
firing the special Osmium rounds. Now with a new threat the others
abandoned their hunt as Ion blasts began to hit around us, my thumbs
locked down on the trigger switches.
Beside my own FAV Candi was chewing up her side of the street as we
turned the Hunter Droids into scrap metal. A hover ship was just above
the tops of the buildings heading our way now.
From a side street a child's Big Wheel raced out in front of the Droids
between heaps of scrapped cars. The little red haired urchin, her legs
on the peddles, pumping as fast as she could. More droids emerging
behind her only to be blown to bits by the Osmium grenades she'd
dropped in her wake. This kid wasn't going to go down easy, but she
needed help fast.
Candi was on the far side of the street, her guns chewing up the Droids
eating through their defenses. "Mona, hook it," I yelled to my driver.
The rear end coming around bouncing as I locked my gun triggers down,
then hit the tracking link to Candi's guns giving her control of both
sets. I released one end of the fighting strap, feeling myself sliding
with the centrifical force of the spin. As my hand caught the loose end
of the strap, I let my feet lift up out of the FAV as I reached for the
girl.
I was dropping too fast I wouldn't make it back into the FAV with her.
Instead I let my legs close around her as my weight settled onto the
Big Wheel.
The little urchin reached into a box taking out a grenade. To my
amazement she pulled the pin and let it go as we jerked around behind
Mona. It bounced four times into the midst of a squad of Droids before
going off. Now Candi was ahead and to the right of us. Mona hooked a
left in time with Ingrid and the momentum let me swing up, the urchin
held between my legs as I finally came down on Ingrid's hood.
Ingrid reached forward grabbing hold of the kid and pulled her into the
passenger seat. Then I jumped across to my own FAV and Mona sped off
for our Hide out as I un-slaved my guns resuming control.
We needed a new base of operations. I figured we had about three
minutes tops to go in and grab whatever we could before the hover ship
leveled the building we'd been using.
The blast doors sprang open ahead of us as we shot inside. We'd have to
use the back door on the way out.
"Stay in the FAV," Candi barked at the girl. "We don't have time to
look out for you." The four women jumped out and began throwing things
in the back. First the spare twin M-90s from the work bench, then even
more stuff was being tossed into a pair of trailers, then the FAVs were
backed up and hooked up to them.
This wasn't the first time we'd had to bug out of a safe house. and I
was sure it wouldn't be the last.
As we picked our way through the connecting tunnels going deeper
underground, we heard the first of the heavy Ion cannons hitting the
heavy blast doors. Two more hits like that and they'd be done.
As I passed the junction to the main line I swung out to the side at
the limit of the fighting strap, my hand slapping at a hastily
installed button about four feet off the floor. The string of Last
Resort charges laid in the tunnel were now armed. The detonator was
twenty feet further along on the opposite wall. "Candi, hit it," I
called out to her. We had thirty seconds to be around the next corner.
Pulling the trailers we barely made it in time. And began to slow down
as the string of small explosions went off sealing the tunnels to the
Safe house.
We needed another base fast, especially with the kid along. Hell we
didn't even know her damned name. But before we could ask a crash and
string of much larger explosions erupted overhead. From the shake and
rumble of the tunnel walls, whatever had just blown up was a lot bigger
than the ammo and fuel dump we'd just detonated behind us.
We began to creep slowly along. It had been a while since we'd been in
these tunnels and we didn't want to run anyone over if there was
anyone. Plus the Droids sometimes sent patrols in at the upper levels.
Suddenly the kid started trying to get out of the FAV behind me.
"Sissy, my Sissy, we gots to get my sissy."
"Malissa? It's your call," said Candi.
"Hold up here, we'll find out what we need to know. Then go from
there." I decided.
Her name was Mags, but we didn't get any immediate explanation and
didn't demand one. Lots of people these days went by nicknames, usually
related to what they were good at.
Her older sister's name was Reward, and they'd been living with the L
Street Scavengers for almost a year before we moved into the
neighborhood and started knocking down drones. I had to remind Ingrid
that this was not the time or place. She too had been a 'Reward' before
Candi and I had found her.
The Scavengers fancied themselves as freedom fighters, though they ran
more often than they stood and fought. Still we needed a place to stay
for a day or two.
We holed up at a large junction trying to decide our next move.
I'd just opened a protein bar to eat when Ingrid nudged my arm and
motioned with her head toward the kid. She was sitting in the front
seat of the FAV a bag of empty Magazines for the assault rifles in her
lap as she peeled open the bandoleers of strip clips. There were ten
rounds to a clip, and each magazine held fifty rounds. We hadn't
reloaded the empty Magazines yet because we'd misplaced the speed
loaders in one of the trailers the last time we'd had to bug out. We
hadn't taken the time to open the next few cases to find another one
yet because we seldom used the rifles and the trailers were about a
quarter full of already filled Magazines. Each case was supposed to
have one of the speed loaders, but more often they were missing.
Now she reached into the front of her shirt and came out with one on a
string. Carefully she fed the first clip into it and pushed down hard,
the rounds zipping into the magazine. Before I could say anything she'd
fed four more into the magazine, then smacked the butt end on the edge
of the seat causing the rounds to bounce and line up. Then she gave it
a double tap along the back edge forcing them to all slide to the back.
"Mags," I called to her. When she looked up I said "Thanks, you did
that just right." And tossed her two protein bars which she caught and
then pocketed before returning to loading the Magazines. That explained
her name, she was good at loading 'Mags'.
Without a speed loader you had to pull the rounds off the strip first
then load them one at a time. And still if you didn't pack the magazine
afterward they tended to jam up on you.
"Do you think they made it?" asked Mona my navigator/driver. I knew who
she was talking about.
My kid sister Missy and our adopted Momma, Doty, who we'd escorted to
the jump portal. There were five cars that made it there, we just had
no way of knowing if they made it through to the other side. My other
sister Stephaney, was a Supply Transport Operator who often dropped our
supplies for us. But we'd not seen or heard from her since before we
helped Missy and our Momma escape.
People thought we were living on the edge. Hell, Stephaney actually
went among the enemy. Sure most had no idea she was there, Satin
Nights, her truck, had heavy shielding to keep them from scanning her
presence. That's where most of the Osmium rounds came from for our twin
90's.
Loading the feeders for the 90's was easy, just open the lid and start
dumping the rounds into the hopper. The lid of the hopper was the rear
fighting deck where the gunner stood most of the time. There was a
little shaker that filled the feed tubes that ran up the inside of the
mount and fed the guns. But they had one big drawback.
The brass coating the rounds flash melted, and what wasn't turned into
energy to drive the round sprayed out with the exhaust gas to work the
bolt and chamber the next round. Let it build up and it jammed the
guns, one reason why we both had two sets of spares.
Rule number one, never get caught without a gun at the ready. Ours was
one of the few teams that had Twin 90's. It had actually been Ingrid
who'd figured out our own configuration. She'd built new feeders to let
the left gun feed from the right side. All the other twin mounts
required the left gun to be mounted lower than the right, with the feed
chute passing over the top. The result was the exhaust gasses sprayed
the right hand gun, which jammed faster.
Also ours had a single feed tube that ran up the center of the pedestal
mount and then into a splitter above the swivel. The end result was
that we could go in a continuous 360 and not have to worry about
binding the feed chutes.
Unlike the conventional ammo the Osmium disks didn't have a set primer
end, the energy followed the barrel when fired by the bolt that created
the electric spark needed to ignite it.
I pulled up the map board trying to get an Idea of where to find the L
Street Scavengers. We hadn't had any contact from them for a while.
"Mags, do you know where we need to go?" I asked. She stood up and
hugged me then climbed into the passenger seat of Candi and Ingrid's
FAV.
She was leading us up to street level, and both Candi and I were
getting nervous. This was close to where we'd gone underground and the
Droids would still be up there in force.
We paused momentarily at street level as we opened the blast doors, it
wasn't night yet but the street outside was dark. Then the smoke hit
us. Something huge was burning, belching out smoke. I quickly
dismounted and edged up to the door to look out.
The hover ship lay crashed into the buildings, flames and smoke
billowing out of it, Droids lay crumpled on the ground, lifeless. Then
I realized, the hover ship had been directly over our safe house when
it blew up.
My mind began calculating the things last estimated attitude, about
three hundred feet above ground level. We'd never gotten close enough
to fire on one that was under five hundred feet before, they had some
sort of shield generators that our rounds couldn't get through.
"Lifeline to any station this net, do you copy" someone was
transmitting.
"Lifeline you got Rogue Seven Twenty, over," I answered the Central
Base.
"Did you see the Hover ship go down?"
"Negative we were too busy trying to get our asses out from under it
before they leveled our safe house," I informed them. "It was hovering
at approximately three hundred feet when our Osmium dump blew."
"Roger copy Three hundred," they repeated the information back to me.
"What happened that they found you?" the tone was Accusatory.
"We rescued a kid off the street. Which reminds me, we need a location
for the L Street Scavengers."
"What's left of them is at the Bus Station, they got chewed to bits
last week." There was a long pause. "We're taking advantage of that
hover ship going down, and moving everyone out of that Bus Terminal.
The other Rogues are already starting to cover them as they make their
way along the streets."
Mags began holding her ears and pointing up toward the eastern sky.
"Oh shit, Lifeline get everyone underground now!" I yelled into my
Microphone. "We have three incoming Hover Ships," Candi's gun came to
life as the fallen droids began to rise again. We could hear firing all
around us now as other Rogue units began to fire on the droids before
they could become fully activated again. Turning the corner we found
pandemonium as civilians tried to find a safe building to get
underground again.
With the destruction of the Hover Ship, they wouldn't be satisfied to
haul them off to slave labor camps. They would level the damned city
block by block. That's what they had done in the other two cities where
a Hover Ship had been brought down. Only in those cities no one had
survived to tell us what or how they'd brought them down.
These Hover Ships weren't taking any chances. They were hovering at
five hundred, the force fields fully extended around them. Nothing was
getting through, but also nothing was left standing under them.
We needed to get these people to safety fast. But we didn't want them
trapped in tunnels that could be cut off from the rest.
"Rogues, head them to the Aqueducts," I called over the radio. The
waterway was just under a mile away now. And it had openings that let
out into the countryside.
"Seven twenty, did you pick up a girl named Mags?" I recognized the
voice of Rogue Seven Forty Six.
"Yeah do you have her sister?"
"Roger, we'll meet up at the Duct." They responded.
They were out ahead of us, guiding the Civvies, we were with the
trailing elements knocking down Drones to give them a better chance to
get everyone out of the city safely. Which meant we were running in
several different directions criss crossing paths with other Rogue
units to confuse the Droids. I just hoped they didn't have other ships
coming in from that direction.
We'd just met up with them when we heard the sound of the big portal
fifteen miles away spooling up.
"What the hell?" asked all the Rogue units.
"Rogue Seven Two Zero, do you copy? This is Star Command Bravo,
Commander Stephanie Zimmer. I just dropped through your gate, please
confirm."
"Bravo Two One, we're reading heavy activity north and East in the
city. Those damned Skecksies are leveling it block by block."
"Roger Two One. Calliopes, front and center. We need to hold until the
Slammers get here. But we need clear skies to do that so knock em the
fuck down." I heard the voice that had identified herself as the
Commander.
I sat in awe as the sky was lit by Cyan blasts as they lanced out
faster than anything we could imagine. Still the shields were absorbing
the hits, and then suddenly the bolts of pure energy were burning a
hole through the leading Hover Ship.
Smaller Shuttles dropped from its bays to the ground, seconds before it
blew apart.
Cheers went up everywhere around us.
"Cut your celebrations, they still managed to get C&C shuttles on the
ground," I yelled. And those shuttles didn't have to be up high to
control the Droids on the ground.
"Malissa did we really see what it looked like?" asked Mona.
"Star Command Bravo, Who are you guys?" I asked over the radio.
"Is this Seven Two Zero?"
"Yes, but who the hell are you guys? Don't get me wrong we're happy to
see you." I began.
"Your little sister, Missy sent us, they made it through," came the
answer.
"M, Missy sent you?"
"She gave us the calculations to activate the gate, but we're here on
behalf of the First Beings of the known universes. You have a Skecksies
infestation and we're here to help you exterminate the Vermin."
The other Drone Hover Ships were retreating, pulling back out of the
city as fast as they could even as they dropped their own Shuttles.
They were going to regroup, I could feel it. The droids on the ground
were pulling back, but not retreating.
"Alright Bravo's you know the drills. Start securing the town and
spreading out, we're the beach head. If it doesn't have a heartbeat
knock it down. I'll be making contact with Rogue Seven Two Zero."
We met up with Seven Forty Six before the Bravo Commander reached us.
From the looks of her, Reward hadn't been given any choices. And I had
to physically restrain Candi from blasting out the brains of the L
Street Scavengers.
As I guided her to my FAV, Blaylock their commander got in front of me.
"She's our Reward, not yours," his torrent of rage was cut short as
Ingrid's hand shot out. Her fingers digging into his throat.
"You are nothing but a coward, and in a lot of ways you are far worse
than the damned Droids," she spat in his face. His blood gushing out
where her steel tipped fingers dug into his flesh.
"Malissa are you going to just let her kill him?" asked Mona in shock.
"Ingrid, we aren't Droids. Make it quick," I said.
Her fingers released his throat then straightened and the razor sharp
artificial nails shot forward again, this time sliding between ribs,
"You will never, ever, again use women as 'Rewards' for your Thugs."
She pulled her hand back letting his lifeless body fall at her feet.
"Load up we have to go meet the Bravo Commander," I said. "Reward,
you're with us."
She hugged her little sister, then got in the passenger seat beside
Mona. "Hi my names 'Ratchet' not Reward. You already know Mags."
As we headed toward the gate Mona finally broke her silence. "Why did
you let Ingrid do that?"
"Mona, before we picked you up off the streets, it was just Candi and
me. Then we stumbled onto the Water Street Scavengers. They were in the
middle of collecting their 'Reward' for having offed a half dozen
Droids."
"There aren't any Water Street Scavengers," said Mona.
"They made the mistake of thinking that Candi and I were going to
become rewards too. So unless you've ever been gang raped, you need to
cut Ingrid some slack here."
As she drove Ingrid was busy cleaning the blood out from under her
steel fingernails. Mona had joked about her inch long razor sharp nails
before, not knowing why she insisted on making them and keeping them
sharp. Usually she wore driving gloves over her hands so she didn't
injure anyone else by accident.
We were met by a pair of FAVs that sported Quad guns that looked
smaller than our 90's. Then I recognized them as the 60's, an earlier,
smaller caliber version of our 90's, that fired conventional Ammo
"Momma, I mean Colonel, Seven Two Zero's here," said a young girl in a
silver and black uniform.
"I'm on my way, the second group of Calliopes will be here in Twenty.
They can tell us where to set them up." came a reply over the radio. I
could feel Lifeline seething at being cut out of the loop, but I didn't
care, they'd cut us and the other two teams that had helped us get my
little sister to the gate, off from regular support.
"Ma'am, she looks like Aunt Malissa, but this lady aint no School Ma
'arm." Said another young woman.
"Toni, this is one of the Parallels. Same people but still different,"
said a new voice over their radio.
"Duhhhh, I figured that out already Sis," she turned to me then. "My
mom and younger sister are on their way, but we need to move over to
let the Calliopes get by."
I was busy looking at those huge Gatling Guns that had downed a Hover
Ship by eating through their shields.
"Impressive huh?"
"You have no idea," I answered.
About two minutes later a version of my sister Stephanie pulled up
jumping out of one of those strange FAVs.
"Hi Stephanie Zimmer, but you can call me colonel. Excuse me a second,"
she turned to the girl Toni. "Put your damned helmet on, and stop
acting like your uncle Link. If you start chewing cigars I'm sending
you home." the girl pouted and pulled her helmet back on.
"But you never wear one Momma," pointed out the girl as she cinched the
chin strap.
"I have a Mastoid implant. Now go find the front line and get the
perimeter up." she turned back to me. "Sorry, she's just like her
father sometimes." I watched the girl pull something from the top of
her boot but before it made it to her mouth the colonel had it in her
hand.
I just sat there looking at her as she wet it first then bit the end
off and stuck it in her mouth before lighting it.
"I know I have a double here, where is she?"
"Oh, uhh, Stephaney drives one of the supply rigs. They slip in and
steel ammo and stuff from the Droids," I answered.
"Droids, Skecksies same thing. They're Cybernetic Machines built by a
race called the Loki. Pure evil, that lot. How does she get in and
out?"
"Oh, umm, she's a Trans, XXY. The Droids don't seem to scan us as
dangerous unless we're blasting the shit out of them," I answered. they
tend to ignore our presence."
"Good to know," she said. Then she yelled, "Mona, bring the S-2 and the
RATT Rig and follow us." The woman she yelled as I turned and saw my
drivers double. And an older version of Mags was standing in the
doorway of the communications Rig.
"Seven Twenty, talk to us girl. Who are those people?" came the voice
of Lifeline. Still being ignored by the new arrivals.
"The Friggin Cavalry, so you better start kissin my ass for helping my
baby sister get through the Gate," I told them. They'd forbidden me to
do it but I had ignored them. They'd spent the last two months giving
us very little in the way of support for disobeying a direct order
which had increased the activity of the Droids.
"Hey Malissa," I turned back to the young woman who was now offering us
cigars of our own. "Have you ever met a Phase Spider or a Goth?"
"Sorry no idea what you're talking about," I answered.
"Ok if you come across any big ass Spiders in our camp, they are
friendlies. Phase Spiders are a species of Widows, and they get
freaking huge. Goths get about as big as one of those trailers your
towing and look like a Tarantula." As she said it she showed me
pictures on her display tablet. "As far as I know there aren't any here
now, but if they do show up and you harm one it would be worse than say
the cold blooded murdering of everyone on the planet. If we find any
Loki, the beings behind the Skecksies, the Phase Spiders will come in
force."
Then I saw a half human, half wolf.
"Malissa are you seeing this shit?" asked Candi.
"Yeah, but hey they came to help so let's get to know them," I said.
A trio of the wolf people were coming toward us now. The female in the
lead had a huge looking rifle over her shoulder. The end of the barrel
as big around as one of our 90's barrels yet almost twice as long.
"Hi, I'm Patti Whack, I need a good vantage point to set up. These are
my spotters, Nik and Nak," the two younger wolves with her giggled.
"Patti's a Sniper," explained Stephanie as she pulled up a holo of the
city. "She needs a good vantage point to spot the Leadership
Skecksies."
They pointed to a tall structure.
"That has no underground connection, you'll have to go in and out
through the streets." I told them. "If you can take it away from them
in one piece, that is." The building was one of their key strategic
communications points.
Patti grinned and cocked her head to the side. "We'll own the streets."
These people sounded so confident, just like we'd been when everything
had started.
"Whack, Whack, Whack," chuckled Nik and Nak behind her.
"See those antenna on top? Those were put there by the Drones. We do
our best to put holes in them every chance we get. It usually gets us a
few days of confusion before they repair them again. But good luck
getting close enough to take them out now."
"Mona, Fire Mission Alert. Get me a Twelve digit grid, or someone to
Lase that roof top," Stephanie put her finger on the one Patti wanted
and it flashed to red. "Then have Bravo's Four and Six mop up the
building floor by floor and set up security for Patti and her teams."
"I got it covered Ma'am" Patti set her big gun up across the hood of my
FAV then opened the bolt. "Nik, Spotter Round."
Nik placed a seven inch long round in her hand with a giggle, and I saw
Nak with a pair of field glasses.
"Range, two point three four seven miles. Elevation nine hundred two
feet. Wind, half a knot from the south west," she called out. Patti was
busy doing something to the base of the huge shell before sliding it
into the chamber.
Suddenly the gun made a burping sound, as it jumped up and kicked
backward. Then the bipod came down leaving dents in the armored hood.
The big dish antenna seemed to be the brightest point in the distance.
"Got it, bunker buster on the way," called someone else. There was a
whistling sound, and then the antenna's blew off the top as the glass
exploded out of all the windows from the top down to ground level.
"Geez, Arty, I hope the friggin stairwells weren't in the middle of the
building," said Patti. As several groups raced forward to begin
securing the building.
"Holy shit that was a two mile shot," pointed out Candi.
"Her record is Three and a half. But those were booster rounds she was
using then," stated Stephanie bluntly.
Mags giggled and quoted the nursery rhyme, "Nik Nak, Patti Whack give a
Draak a bone."
Reaching out Patti caressed her cheek, "On Lyconia where I am from its
give a Wolf a bone."
Five minutes later someone called, "Patti, how fond are you of
climbing?"
"Let me guess the stairs were in the middle of the building," she said.
"You know it, so what's the game plan now?" they asked.
"Purr, this one's yours. Cat's like climbing right?" asked Patti with a
wicked grin.
"Thanks Arty." Said someone else as four trios of felines sprinted off
toward the building carrying the same weapons and equipment as Patti
and her Spotters. "We'll take this building here," she grinned. "The
roof top is actually sixteen feet higher." "Arty give me a beehive on
my next spot." Nak handed her the round and she painted the huge dish
antenna, this time it was glowing a different color.
In seconds the rooftop was clear. "Thanks Love," she made a kissing
sound. "Hope you come up to my roof tonight."
"Cut the Chatter, remember why we're here." came across the radio.
They were spreading out through the city now, intermittent gun fire
here and there as they mopped up Droids as they went. Near where the
second Hover ship had gone down someone began scanning the wreckage.
I was near by watching to see how they conducted their Wreckage Survey
Investigation. Suddenly a device held by one of the troopers began to
screech loudly.
"Oh Fuck Meee," he and everyone else began retreating from the area.
"L, L, Loki. There's a Loki in the wreckage," he screamed to be heard
above the screeching of his scanner.
Slowly a golden hued creature began rising up out of the crash, every
bit of ten feet tall and looking like some overgrown Mutant Praying
Mantis.
"Back, every one back now!" one of the calliopes sped in, the barrels
spinning as it blasted pure energy rounds into the creature who just
staggered under the impact until finally a second Calliope joined in.
The creature exploded, splattering out over a twenty foot ring.
An urgent beeping began emitting from the colonels PDA.
"Star Command, hold what you have. Prepare for the arrival of General
Cling and his troops," said a musical voice.
"As you wish Your Highness. Please tell him to hurry," answered Colonel
Stephanie.
Just then the portal opened and another string of Calliopes streamed
through. Each one trailed by two Ammunition support vehicles. The
second they cleared the portal the guns raised up into the sky and
began cycling as they fanned out.
A few minutes later heavy bombardment was falling from unseen enemy
still high overhead. Most of the ordinance though were destroyed by the
Calliopes before they reached the ground.
"Protect the Portal," call Stephanie.
"What's happening?" I asked. We'd never been bombarded like this
before.
"My troops killed a Loki in the wreckage of that ship. Now they are
retaliating." She ran to the Communication center, and I followed.
"Contact Ma'am, the Bio-Ships are jumping into this Universe."
Then suddenly the air around us was shimmering as the biggest Spiders
I'd ever seen began to appear out of thin air.
"General," one in the lead turned and came to Stephanie who had gotten
his attention.
"Her Majesty will be here in half an hour. I trust you to keep her
safe," he said then rushed off to rejoin those at the head as they
began fanning out.
"Listen up everyone. There are Phase Spiders moving through the city.
DO NOT FIRE ON THEM, DO NOT FIRE ON THEM, They are our allies." It had
gone out over our own channels.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Calista," Unicorn got her attention as she was waiting on her students
to hand in their homework assignments. "We have been directed to watch
over the Juvenile Bio-Ships."
"What? Why?" I asked my Ship. But before I could get a response my
phone was ringing.
"Calista, why have all the adult Phase Spiders left? Rook said they
were being sent to Earta Prime before she and all the others left,"
stated Colonel Winters.
"Oh Shit, they found Loki there," I said. I frantically called Churl.
"Calista, I'm sorry but we can't let Hub and Astrid down they need our
guns," said Churl as I ran out of the classroom where I was teaching
about the Bio-Ships, into the quad. Looking around I could feel it, the
juvenile Phase Spiders, the Bio-Touched vehicles felt it, an entire
universe was at war. Hub, all the other Bio-Ships, all the adult Phase
Spiders were there, Laying their lives on the line to stop perhaps the
greatest evil the Universes had ever known. Falcon was already
preparing to jump into the fray.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I could feel something about to happen, looking across at Candi, I
could see she felt it too.
"Mags, Ratchet, we need you two to stay here. See if they have any good
chow, and try to score us some more fuel. We'll be back in about two
hours," I told them as I unhitched the trailer then opened up the
hopper. Mags was helping Candi dump in whole cases of Ammo chips.
Ratchet was opening the cases for me.
Then we strapped down both pre-mounted pairs of spare guns in their
carry cradles. If we had to we could change out jammed guns on the fly.
It was faster and easier to just swap out an entire pair than it was to
swap a single gun.
"What's going on?" asked the Colonel.
"We need to locate those C&C shuttles. Before they can coordinate a
counter attack," I jumped up to the fighting deck after closing the
hopper. Then looking around at the other Rogue teams I saw them shake
their heads no. Reaching down between the front seats I pulled out a
preloaded CD pack handing it to Mona. "Candi," I got her attention.
"Number Seven, Start the music as soon as we clear the forward line of
Troops." Seven forty six and seven five pulled into line behind us. I
only recognized three of the people in seven forty six, two in seven
five. The younger girls with them had joined Mags and Ratchet as they'd
helped unhook the trailers next to ours
The Colonel jumped into the front seat, and the one named Jerome jumped
in beside Ingrid as others joined the four FAVs of the other two teams.
"You'll want to stay low Ma'am. When the guns start cranking you can't
hear nothin' else. Only a team in sync with each other can hope to get
through where we're going," I warned her. "There's a pair of headphones
under the seat if you want to listen in," added Mona.
"So what exactly is it we're doing here?" she asked now that she'd seen
the name written on the CD pack. 'Suicide Mission.'
"Recon, Rogue Style." I slipped on my headphones as Heavy Metal began
playing low in my ears. The volume was keyed to the gun triggers. We
had no idea where the music had originated from, Ingrid had picked it
up off a satellite scan one night after we'd rescued her.
Mona already had her headphones on as did Ingrid and Candi. 'Welcome to
the Jungle,' by a band called Guns 'N' Roses began to play as we raced
past the forward line of Bravo troops. I don't know how she did it but
somehow the CD's were programmed to be in sync with each other as we
started singing along to the music we knew all too well. About four
blocks away we began to take fire. I leaned back into the fighting
strap as I opened up, pouring Osmium rounds into the Droids on the
right. Candi riddling the ones on the left. As we passed by I felt more
than saw the rocket launcher above us. Suddenly both Candi and I were
on the hoods firing up into the building. It was crazy insane, as we
walked our way around our FAVs ripping the Droids apart. Five turns
later we found our first Shuttle, and Candi flipped a small canister
toward it.
As we rounded the corner the canister exploded splattering Americium
241 across part of the ship before it could react.
We hit a side street and everything was silent, no firing. The volume
dropped back to a reasonable level. We could hear the other two teams
as they advanced to the left and right in search of the C&C Drone
shuttles
"You hangin in there Jerome?" asked the Colonel with a wicked laugh.
"Just like bein back in fuckin Nam. This is Saigon all over again.
except you know who the bad guys are before they," the volume was at
full blast again as we started taking hits. There was another C&C
shuttle up ahead in a ground hugging hover, and we were two blocks from
Lifeline Central.
'Another One Bites the Dust' began to blast from the headphones as we
sped in, criss crossing. The Colonel and Jerome both lobbing a marker
canister at the shuttles.
As we rounded the corner I felt it more than heard it as Candi's guns
fell silent.
Already Mona had the FAV spinning around. I swept my stream of fire
over their heads as She pulled the pin and lifted the pair of jammed
guns out of the mount. She'd just gotten the fresh pair linked in and
cycled when she jerked to the side and slumped over the top. Suddenly
it was silent as the CD changed songs.
Jerome was out of his seat guiding her into it as he wrapped the
fighting strap around his arm. "Get This Crate Moving Now!" the guns
came to life to the tune of 'Wild Side' by some band called Motley
Crue, and we continued on, deeper into Droid held territory.
We could hear the other Rogues as they too advanced through a city that
was an open battle ground. The only good point about it was you didn't
have to worry about friendly fire this deep in the shit. We knew where
our friends were by the sounds of their guns.
Ten blocks later we found an abandoned garage and stopped to check on
Candi. She was hit five times but nothing major. Her armored vest had
slowed them down enough, but she was out of the fight for now.
"Colonel, her majesty wishes you to return to your lines," said a voice
suddenly behind us.
"Cling, shit you could have gotten toasted," she barked at the spider
as she holstered her sidearm. "Take Candi to medical, she's been hit."
He moved faster than I thought possible, and suddenly he had Candi and
they were gone.
"I don't get it," said Ingrid finally. "All those shuttles were pointed
away from us, not toward us like they usually are."
"They are preparing to hit the Spiders from behind once they engage the
Loki on the ground," said the Colonel. "Bravo, leave six Calliopes at
the portal. Advance and destroy those Shuttles and any ships that
aren't ours, you can find the shuttles by the Americium trace. I want
Calliopes out front to sweep the streets. But watch out there are still
a few Rogue units caught in the middle."
Just then a set of headlights came on from deeper in the underground
garage. "Seven Twenty, is that you?" came over my radio.
"Yeah Satin Nights, how many you got with you?" I asked my oldest
sister.
"Twelve, what the fuck is going on? That was the biggest fucking spider
I ever saw. And the fucking Droids are going nuts." She said.
"We just got heavy duty reinforcements and those Spiders are part of
them, don't anyone shoot one either." I told her. "You got any Ammo?
Our guns are almost out," I said eyeing the red flashing lights on both
the dash and the gun mount.
"God I hope Candi's going to be make it," she said realizing who had
been injured. Satin Nights pulled slowly forward.
"Seven Forty Six and Seven Five, do you copy?" I called out.
The sounds of someone's guns answered a second before, "Yeah you got
any way to get us some fucking ammo out here, like maybe an air drop?"
"Hold one I'm turning on my Beacon for five seconds. We got twelve
supply rigs at our location. Copy?"
"On our way," suddenly their guns came to life again as the sounds of
their engines began to scream. They were close by, both teams having
grouped up to support each other.
Chandra had several minor hits. Teague was in worse shape, and the girl
Toni was behind her guns, a wild look in her eyes, a cigar clamped
between her teeth.
Rolling up beside the trucks she walked to the side as a driver lifted
the hopper cover and began dumping in ammo after reaching in and
pulling something out.
"Here you go, hang onto that for good luck," she said.
"Why?" asked Toni.
"That was the only one left in the hopper," she answered.
The second the rounds began hitting the bottom of Chandra's hopper her
guns began to cycle as the empty feed chutes refilled to load the dry
guns.
About thirty minutes later we heard the sounds of the Calliopes as they
advanced through the city. Moving to the edges we watched as shuttles
and larger hover ships began falling. Many racing toward the sky trying
to escape. As it grew dark we could see the flashes higher up and knew
they were in the outer atmosphere.
"Seven Twenty, you still there?" came the voice of Lifeline Central.
"Yeah Deek, You?"
"Yeah, this is some of the craziest shit I ever seen. We got a talking
spider here using our satellite transmitter to talk to ships out there
in the stars. She wants to know if Stephaney is alright."
"They both are Deek," I said.
"How does she know about your sister?" he asked.
"She's probably talking about Colonel Zimmer. She's from a Parallel
Universe and those ground troops are hers. But yes she looks just like
my sister," I told him.
I was busy swapping out my guns with a fresh pair and watching Jerome
as he started scraping away the melted Copper from the receiver of the
first pair of twins still mounted in their cradle strapped into the
standby carrier.
Once the Calliopes reached us, we sent the trucks on toward the portal.
Stephaney stopped long enough to ask where the cavalry had come from.
"Missy sent them," I told her. "Her and Momma made it to civilization."
"You'd be proud of your little sister, she's doing great at Malissa's
Academy for Exceptional Girls," grinned the Colonel.
"Missy, in a girls school?" It was the first I'd heard of it as well.
"Look they're sending people up from the mines. We got survivors being
set free," called out Lifeline, I could hear the tears in his voice.
Then we started getting reports from other Rogue units scattered across
the planet. The Droids were fleeing, but not getting far.
"Help, someone please help me," came a call. "I got this huge spider
here and it's barely moving," the caller was crying. "It, it saved us.
we gotta help it, please."
"Bravo Central, do you have a lock on that call for help?" Demanded the
Colonel.
"Medical Shuttle's on its way Ma'am," was the answer along with a set
of coordinates.
We were moving before she gave the word, it was the way we'd always
done business. Someone calls for help we run to the rescue.
It was another Heavy Metal, Rapid Fire run to reach them, and we heard
at least two other Rogue units headed that way.
The woman was holding the spider trying to keep it calm as a young boy
wrapped bandages made from rags around legs and used heavy tape to hold
more over wounds in its body.
The woman and her son were Phase jumped along with the Spider back to
the fire base.
We mopped up a few pockets of Droids that had managed to hide as we
headed back to the Portal so we could check on Candi.
The second we reached the Med Station Mags flew out of her seat to a
popup Med Station to see her, then began fussing over her after we'd
picked them up on the way through the Fire Base.
Ratchet jumped in refueling the FAVs and then doing service checks. She
had a roll of grey tape and began covering the holes in the sides. Then
she began inspecting the Tires and scraping away the self-seal foam
where it had leaked out of the tires before sealing up the holes there.
"So Missy made it in that old puddle jumper," Stephaney my sister
smiled. Then I realized who it was who had helped her fix up the old
car after she found it.
Candi returned from the med station, a determined look in her eyes as
she climbed up onto the fighting deck of Seven Twenty Alpha. My FAV was
Seven Twenty. "Can we get the fuck out of here, I gota get some
payback."
Both Mags and Ratchet jumped in carrying rations and medical supplies.
Then as we started out of the hastily set up fire base three of the
Bravo FAVs fell in behind us. I saw the Colonel standing behind the
guns of the lead vehicle and keying my mike I said, "Come on let's play
some music."
"Ingrid. Jerome is going to send you our codes, can you transmit your
music to our stereo's?" asked the Colonel.
"Hell yeah, you wanna play with the Rogues you gotta have the right
music," she actually giggled for the first time in over four months.
After that things just seemed to run together in rapid succession.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We'd been fighting the Droids for gods only knew how long. Now two
weeks after Bravo Command showed up we were helping the sick and
injured. Trying to reunite as many families as possible.
As we rolled back into the firebase Candi jumped over onto the fighting
deck of the second Bravo FAV and hugged Jerome. "Thanks for not telling
us how to do things."
Mags and Ratchet went to work cleaning the downed guns.
"Seven Twenty, run them over to the Armory and swap them out for new
ones," said a young Captain. "Momma, Daddy's here," she warned the
Colonel.
"God Woman, can't you ever let someone else take the lead?" the man
wrapped his arms around her, his mouth covering hers.
"Uhhh, can Mags and I stay with you guys?" asked Ratchet.
"Malissa," I turned to see the Colonel and the biggest Black Widow
spider I'd ever seen. "I hope you'll accept our invitation," said the
Spider Queen who herself looked as if she'd just come from battle.
"Invitation for what?"
"To become a Bravo Team," said the Colonel.
I watched as a ship touched down and then saw more Furry's as they
began stepping off to join the Colonel who motioned for me to follow.
"Mags, Ratchet, turn em around, just in case we need em," I said
motioning to the FAVs.
The rest of my team followed me as we stepped into the command center.
I saw a few other Rogue units, but not many. "We would like to offer
you teams a place with Bravo Command. You five teams fought like
banshees out there. We don't mix it up very often but when we do, we
need people like you."
Then I noticed the trucks that had come from the underground garage.
Satin Nights in the lead.
Hooking her arm in mine my sister Stephaney said, "What do you say I
haul your ass to this fancy school and we visit our baby sister?"
"You'd want to leave this wonderful paradise?" I asked.
"Hey, I hear the Colonels sister Malissa, who looks just like you is
the head mistress. And Missy's double there is a truck driver like me.
She travels all over the universes, can you imagine that kind of
adventure?"
I thought for a moment, "Beats the hell out of living underground and
trying to save people who don't like me." I turned to the Colonel, "Can
we take Mags and Ratchet with us?"
"Yes and you can decide later if you want to join us or just live in
peace," answered the Spider Queen. "And we will be sure that you are
legally listed as their Parents."
Seven Forty Six, and Seven Five who had lost half their teams, joined
us as we rolled our FAVs up into the backs of the trucks. Seven Five
had three young Trans girls riding with them.
The trip would take nearly a week, and we were told that our convoy had
a special clearance to use Phase Portals which jumped us past a lot of
the regular traffic. "This trip took your Sister Missy almost a month,"
commented one of the other Truck drivers heading back with us. We
talked and found out the support trucks, a pair of huge rolling
Military Chow halls were from a place called Earth and they'd left
there to be free to travel the stars. But had needed the stability of
supporting a military style unit. They talked about a group known as
the Alpha Alliance and how they'd played a part in things there.
The biggest thing happening was that they were searching for an unknown
passenger who had showed up on one of the trucks as we shot the portal.
Stephaney and I were happy to be getting a chance to see our little
sister and Momma again, but there was something about the way she was
acting. Sure we were over anxious and tried to learn everything we
could about Iridani Five and Malissa's Academy for Exceptional Girls.
But she seemed to be doing all of her research from her own truck. We
were two days out on the Skyway when I finally cornered Stephaney in
the forward section of Satin Nights. I wanted to know why she wasn't
leaving the cab longer than to get some food and return with it to eat
in her truck. I knew that she'd spent a lot of time going without
anything to eat, and what she was taking with her seemed to be twice
what anyone else was eating.
"Look Sis, you used to be so outgoing before all this shit happened and
I want to know what is going on," I heard a noise behind me and knew it
was Ratchet without having to turn around.
"I just can't Sis, Satin needs me here to ummm, to monitor her
systems," she lied and I knew it, I could see it in her eyes.
"Please, talk to me," I pleaded with her.
"Hey don't touch that," she started to yell at Ratchet as she was
opening an overhead compartment.
"Mommyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I heard just before the door was
slammed shut again. "P, please Mommy, please still be safe."
"Malissa," my sister was now wedging herself between Ratchet and the
compartment door. "She's scared."
"And she calls you Mommy," I squeezed my sisters hand. "Ratchet, go get
Candi, and the rest of our team." I turned back around. "No one is
going to take her away from you."
"She's not afraid of that. Malissa, she's scared to death of the
Spiders. They remind her of those, whatever they were."
"The Loki?"
"Yes, she, she was about to be dissected by them when, when Satin
located her. But we had to go in on foot, I carried her out on my back,
got her all the way to Satin."
"Is that how you got that scar I saw on your midsection? You got
blasted?"
"God it hurt. Tess didn't make it though, she caught so many covering
us. She's, she's in the cold Storage, I couldn't leave her behind." I
could see the tears in her eyes. Tess had been her partner for longer
than the droids had been in control.
"You did good, you didn't leave anyone behind. And you got," I
hesitated.
"Reader," she answered.
"You got Reader out and kept her safe. I figure she's yours by right of
rescue." I noticed the door open a crack as the rest filed in and began
asking what was happening.
"Ratchet, Mags. Reader is hiding in the storage compartment. She's my
sisters daughter, and she's scared to death of the spiders," I
explained to them all.
"Stephaney, there is an Arachnid requesting permission to speak with
you." her truck informed her. "She is 'Requesting' permission to board.
We've never had one of those other things do that, I always had to hide
you under the deck plates." As the truck said it a deck plate slid back
and I caught a glimpse of Reader as she dove into the empty space
before it closed.
"Sure, but I don't want her scaring Reader."
"Stephaney, Satin Nights thank you for seeing me," began a Spider Queen
I'd learned to recognize as Lilith.
"Uhh, Ma'am," replied my sister.
"Would you mind if I stood over there? I don't want to make your
daughter nervous by standing atop her hiding place. She's been
traumatized too much." She stepped around so that she was farthest away
from the hiding place.
They talked for a bit, and then the Queen said, "If anyone, and I mean
'Anyone' tries to take her away or harm her in any way at all, they
will have to face the wrath of every Arachnid in all the known
universes."
"Why would you do that, protect her I mean?" asked Stephaney.
"She is a very Special Child. And she is your daughter, never fear. But
I want to assure her that the Loki are an Insect race, not Arachnid.
They only have six legs. We have Eight, and a higher intelligence. Plus
we found the virus code she entered into their computer systems
allowing us to read their programming and shorten the war in your home
system. We are in her debt and she will be looked after to ensure her
safety wherever she goes."
"Thanks but I think maybe your size intimidates her, she isn't normally
afraid of spiders," Stephaney replied. A moment later a little hand
extended out from under the deck plates holding a piece of paper.
"Where Ruby???????" was written on the page.
After looking at it Stephaney asked, "Who is Ruby?" it was directed at
the Queen who gasped in shock.
"Ruby is Dead, the new First Queen Astrid killed her for her many
crimes against not just the Ancients, and our own kind but the rest of
the first beings," was her answer.
"Where Lucinda Regent?" asked the girl out loud now.
"Dead."
"Night Wolf?"
"You know Night Wolf, little one?" the Queen sounded surprised. "Who
was your mother?"
"Ash' Anti Creed," she answered almost in a whisper from under the deck
plates.
"Shhh, Little One, do not say that name too loudly until we cross into
the next Universe." "Trill, Protect Reader at all costs. I must contact
Astrid and the rest of the Council of First Beings." And she was gone.
In her place was a younger nearly transparent Queen about the size of a
Dreg. It had been a while since I'd seen a Dreg though. The droids went
out of their way to destroy them, they were too loyal to humans.
Jerome who had stayed close to my team now asked, "Trill, why did
Lilith get so excited?"
"Reader is a child of the Ancients. The second that we have found since
they disappeared over two thousand years ago. His, her cousin is the
first. But for some reason they were sent forward in time, but Night
Wolf has suffered memory loss and doesn't remember anything. Or if she
does it is only bits and pieces that don't make sense yet. If the Loki
knew that they had her in their hands, she would have been destroyed
instantly. That is why we are to protect her, her mother was a keeper
of the Gateways. Like Phase Spiders that knowledge is inherited at
birth"
The girl began speaking in a language we couldn't understand, but the
Spider, Trill seemed to know what she was talking about. "Yes to the
Home World," answered Trill.
Suddenly Reader was hugging the young Spider, tears streaming from her
eyes.
"All personnel please remain in your present location. Prepare to break
Star Train formation," came an announcement.
"Satin, what's happening?" Stephaney asked her truck.
"I have been directed to reposition myself to the front of the convoy,"
came the answer. "We are about to make a long jump."
"Why the big hurry now?" I asked.
"Malissa, Stephaney, we received orders to get Reader there as soon as
possible. The First Queen has been gravely injured in battle with the
Loki."
"Is, is there anything we can do to help?" I asked.
"No she is already there, and they are doing everything they can for
her," answered an almost invisible Spider Queen.
A day later we were told that we were preparing to exit to Iridani Five
and another group of trucks was ahead of us.
Sitting in the cab of Satin Nights we heard, "This the Wyoming/Ute IGT
truck White Knight, I'm Jack Rabbit. Are yall headed for I-5?"
"Yes Jack Rabbit, I am satin Nights. We originated from Earta Prime."
"No Shit?" "Wow you've come a long ways. Do you know my cousins
roommate Missy? She's from there."
They began to talk and he invited my sister to meet up at the Truck
Stop. "You know you look just like my sister in laws Momma. I bet she's
still there, they got a run goin out next week after the holiday," he
told her. "Hey Night Wolf, I thought you were with Wanderer," he said
when Reader stepped in view of the screen just seconds before his truck
shot through the portal.
