It was the first day of summer vacation and well I was 15 a big 15 year
old and I was working on my 1979 Honda XL250 which I got for a real good
price and it was just about running.
As I was putting the float back in the carburetor and putting it
together our new neighbor was standing by the garage door.

She said, "My name is Mary. I see you are working on a motorcycle."

She said, "I just moved here with my family I will be a sophomore this
year in your high school I believe."
I said, "Really, I will be a sophomore this year also. I guess I am big

She said, "That is great I am so glad I just know it can be torture for
a new girl on her first day in high school in a new town."
I said, "I guess it would be rough for me too when it comes to the
upperclassman except I am as big as a lot of the upperclassman."
She said, "Well, that is great I would love to be protected by a strong
man such as yourself."
I took a look at her and she was beautiful. She was about 5'4" tall and
weighed about what looked like 105 pounds and she had red hair blue eyes

She said, "I have never lived in a town this size I came from a city
don't know what you guys like to do for fun."
I said, "Oh, well there is a Tastee Freeze in town where we can hang out
at on Friday and Saturday nights and there is a roller skating rink and
the cinemas and just different things and of course there is the high
school football team which plays on Friday nights. I guess when you come
from the city there might seem to be more things to do. Why don't you
let me show you around town on Friday and you just might find you can
have fun in this town on Friday night."
She asked, "So what do you do for money?"
I replied, "I have worked at the local hardware store part-time and
summer for 4 years my parents and the owner of the local Ace Hardware
are friends. Started off sweeping the floors now I use the paint mixing
machine."
She said, "Wow, I have only known 2 guys who worked part-time after
school and during the summer because they were poor."
I replied, "Around here it is pretty normal that kids work at least
part-time."
We went inside and mom was in the kitchen enjoying a glass of lemonaide
as we came in.
I said, "Mom this is Mary she and her family just moved here."
She said, "Oh you took the Randell house I was wondering if that house
was bought when I saw the movers."
Mary said, "Yes mam, dad is now managing that bank branch. Mom thought
it would be a good idea to move now so I can be registered here at the
beginning of the year."
Mom said, "That is great and John and you can go to school together."
When mom said that I blushed a crimson red.
I asked, "You want some lemonaide?"
She said, "Yes I would really appreciate that."
As I was opening the freezer mom said, "You better wash those hands
young man."
As I was I washing mom said, "I have to remind his dad occasionally when
he has been working out in the yard. "
I filled up our glasses and went outside to drink our lemonaide.
Mary said, "Your mom is nice."
I said, "Yeah mom and dad were high school sweethearts. Dad owns a tow
truck company and he has been staying in the office and monitoring the
radios in case there is an emergency. He drove the trucks regularly
until about 10 years ago and now he pretty much comes home around 5
unless one of the drivers don't make it into work."
She said, "Oh nice."
She asked, "How long have you lived here?"
I said, " I was born here."
She said, "Really that is nice."
I said, "One thing is I was born in a small town and my dad owns the
local tow truck company and is a Rotarian well I can't get away with
anything."
She laughed and said, "I see the problem."
I said, "One time I stole a goat from the FFA and because it was by one
of my dad's tow truck I was caught and that was last year."
As Mary was finishing her lemonaide her mom walked up our driveway.
I said, " Hi I am John Matthews."
She said, "I am Linda Patterson and Mary's mother and I am glad to meet
you."
Mom came out and said, "You must be our new neighbor and she told me
that your husband is the branch president."
Linda said, "Yes he is and your name is?"
Mom said, "Oh my manners my name is Alicia Matthews and if you need any
help with anything or just want to chat you can drop by and oh here is
my number."
Mom wrote down the number and handed it to Linda.
Linda said, "Great I hope Mary was no bother."
Mom said, "No she wasn't and the fact that she got my son to raise his
head from the motorcycle for a few minutes is always a good thing."
She said, "Great well she has a few things to do but maybe our families
should get together."
Mom said, "Great."
I watched our new neighbors walk down the street talking before going
back to my motorcycle. Little did I know that Mary would become my high
school sweetheart.
Well 2 hours later I finished working on my bike and I was able to start
it up for the first time since I bought it last year.
As I went into the kitchen mom said, "I heard the motorcycle start just
put on your helmet and go to the end of the road and back, You will need
to get that bike inspected and licensed."
I said, "I know mom I have the money for it."
I rode past the Patterson's and Mary was struggling with some trash so I
helped her with it.
She said, "You got your motorcycle running."
I said, "Yeah and this trash looks kind of heavy."
I carried it down to the dumpster and we talked while going and I threw
it in the dumpster for her.
Mary said, "Thanks I like helping mom but this was too heavy for me and
oh bye."
I got back on my motorcycle and rode back to the house and got there in
time to see dad.
He said, "I see you have the motorcycle going good job. Well tomorrow we
can take it to get it licensed."
I said, "Thanks dad."
We walked into the house and dad kissed mom and said, "So what happened
today besides John getting that bike running?"
Mom said, "We met the new neighbor girl."
Dad said, "Oh the new bank manager's family?"
Mom said, "Yes how did you know?"
Dad said, "I met him I went inside to make some deposits and well he was
outside of the office. Yeah really nice guy and he seems really customer
oriented."
Mom said, "Great well the family will come for dinner probably Friday."
Dad said, "Great."
We all sat down for dinner and we all talked and laughed about the day
and after dinner we all cleaned up the kitchen.
After watching the tv until 10:00 I decided to go to bed because I was
really tired.
As I stripped down to my underwear I thought about today and meeting
Mary for the first time. I climbed into bed and I quickly fell asleep.
