THE BANK ROBBER

(A MIND MELD STORY)
Synapse. Ron Baxter is a sixteen year old quadriplegic, confined to a
wheelchair. He has the power to Mind Meld with others and either just
ride along in their body, or take control. In this episode he enters his
favorite person, a Latino girl of fifteen. She/he enters a bank just as
it is being held up and, along with several others, becomes a hostage.

Summer was over and the weather was just starting to get cool enough so
that tee shirts and shorts were on the way out.
I was still able to sit on my porch in my wheel chair and enjoy the girls
passing by. It was one of those school closing days so it was no big
surprise to see Carman, (See Quinceanera) and her younger sister, Maria,
walking down the street, arm in arm, laughing and giggling, as two teens
would be doing.
Now, it is no secret that I have a thing for Carman and have melded with
her several times, one, because she has a body that won't quit, and
second, she has some of the classiest clothes I ever wore (By proxy).
They seemed to be having a good time, and because I had not melded in
several weeks, even just to go to a movie, and I liked what Carman was
wearing; I thought it was time to give it a shot. From where I was
sitting I could see that she was wearing a pair of knee high spike heel
boots that laced in front, but had a zipper on the side to make it easier
to put on and take off. Her pants were black and so tight one could
almost see the brush marks, if you get my drift. She had a red waist
length jacket that may have been leather, that had white fur at the
collar and wrists. I wondered what she was wearing underneath; I guess I
would soon find out. I melded with her.
She and her sister, I learned as soon as I melded, had just come back
from lingerie shopping and were in a hurry to get home and model what
they had bought, (so was I); but first they had to stop at the bank. I
would stay as a passenger and just go along for the ride.
She drew some cash and put it in her pocket when shit happened.
Some guy burst into the bank brandishing two guns, announcing a bank
robbery.
I immediately felt her, Carman, start to panic so I moved up and took
charge, hoping to keep her calm.
The robber had everyone lay down on the floor and to keep quiet. (It was
later learned that one of the tellers hit the "Panic Button" which sent a
silent alarm to the police, which were no more than three blocks away,
and locked all the doors.)
(Authors note, that is one thing I never understood, locking down a bunch
of people in a room with a guy with a gun).
Maria was holding tightly to me and under other conditions I might have
enjoyed it more. There must have been a little more than dozen customers
at the bank, including a pregnant woman who was on the floor next to me.
I looked at her and saw, quite naturally, that she was in distress and
asked if she was alright and because she looked very, very pregnant, and
was told that she is almost a week overdue.
We were all lying face down. I called to the robber and told him that
this lady was about to have a baby, at any moment; (I threw that last
part in for dramatic effect). The robber must have been very nervous
because he started giving all kinds of orders, first, that we all lay on
our backs, then that Maria and I help the woman, Peggy, to a sitting
position against the counter ; this caused a lot of movement and I took
the opportunity to take my cell phone out of my pocket and take a picture
of the gunman and send it to the police, I assumed they knew what it was
because the cops were already outside and had been for several minutes.
Maria and I sat on either side of her trying to make her as comfy as
possible. There was a lot of things going on outside, I, we, could see
quite a few cop cars in the street and of course, T. V. trucks, where the
hell did they come from so fast?
The robber was sitting at a desk so as to be hidden from the street when
all of a sudden the phone rang and someone with a bull horn told him to
answer the phone.
I do not know what was said but he was not happy. I wanted to meld back
with my own body but was afraid that Carman would panic, so I stayed
melded with her.
Peggy was breathing, actually panting and moaning, I knew what that
meant. Since I first melded with Carman several months ago and found out
about her doing volunteer work at the hospital in the ward for drug
addicted babies, I learned a lot about when babies were ready, and this
baby was ready.
I raised my hand, "Hay, Mr. Robber. You better do something or you will
have one more hostage here".
"What you talking about"?
"This lady is about to give birth".
"Well, help her," He said
"I don't know nothing about birthing no baby" (I had seen "Gone with the
wind" a few days ago on TV.)
He finally got on the phone to call for an E. M. T to come in. he got the
keys from the manager and threw them to me, probably because I had the
biggest mouth. He told me to open the doors, one at a time, so the Tec
could come.
The bottom line is that the tech and his assistant came in with a
stretcher and got Peggy to the ambulance just in time. The phone line was
still open, on speaker, and we were told that Peg had a little girl. We
all applauded as we saw the ambulance pull away.
Awhile later I raised my hand again, "Hay, Mr. Robber, I gotta take a
piss." He must have thought about it for a few seconds then said "OK."
What a time I had zipping and buttoning these tight pants that she was
wearing, but they sure looked good on me/her.
No sooner was I back sitting next to Maria when everyone had to go, that
took well over half an hour because he only allowed us to go one at a
time.
The robber talked with the negotiator several time trying to work out a
deal so no one would get hurt, and we all could go home. ( I wondered for
a second if I was watching all this on T.V. in my own body.)
Wow! Look at the clock, it was almost seven o'clock, we had all been here
since before noon and I was starving, all I (Carman) had was a taco about
ten thirty.
Again I raised my hand, "Hay crook. How about getting us something to
eat, we are starving". Everyone started agreeing with me, "We need food"
They shouted.
The phone line must have still been open because we/I could hear voices
on the speaker saying that they would send some sandwiches and juice.
That took about fifteen minutes. The cops put a few boxes outside the
front door and I was told to bring them inside, and no funny business.
I gave out the food and drinks, making sure that the crook got his share.
I sat back next to Maria. My sandwich was tuna and my drink was a V-8
splash, which was when I had my V-8 moment, all this time I could have
saved all this shit but I guess I couldn?t see the forest for the trees?
I immediately melded with the crook and gave myself up. Quite a bit of
running around by the cops before all was over.
Hostages were all examined and let go but it seemed that Carmen was
credited with holding them all together during the whole afternoon and
showed up on the eight o?clock news.
This was a big thing in this small town, nothing ever happens here. This
town has not had a change of population in years because every time a
girl gets pregnant, a guy leaves town.
I melded back in my own body and found out that the entire episode was on
T V live.
