McDonalds.
Friday came quicker then I hoped it would, still hoping for some sort of
reprieve, but it never came. I was put on the bus and I saw Dad put my
luggage in the stowage compartment. Mom of course was admonishing for me
to be on my best behavior. They said once they got to their destination
They would call me. I just sat there as the bus pulled away taking me to
my doom.
I feel asleep on most of the trip, when I awoke we were pulling in to the
bus station in Maryland. I got off the bus and Aunt Mary was waiting for
me. She was about 15 years older then mom but still looked good for her
age. Great I thought to myself, now what is a 12 year old boy going to
do with a lady this old. She asked the porter to please get my luggage
and bring them to her car. This is where I probably should have paid
more attention but as most young boys I didn't. WE walked out to her
car, she opened her trunk and I meanwhile I climbed inside the car. WE
drove off to her home with me still unhappy with the current situation.
We arrived about an hour later.
Her home was a older home, a two story with a wrap-around porch. The
driveway was mostly pebbles and assorted rocks. The lawn was manicured
and had flowers that weaved in and out of the trellis underpinning the
porch. My Aunt had been married but her husband (my Uncle) had died in
Korea. They had 2 daughters who now were married and lived elsewhere.
At least I wouldn't be surrounded by girls. I looked down and up the
street and didn't see any other kids my age. Come along Robin. I heard
my Aunt call to me. It's Robert or Bobby I retorted. We can get you
suitcases in a bit, she continued., lets have lunch first then we will
get you settled. I was hungry and readily agreed. We went on into the
house. As Auntie went about to make us lunch I decided to scout my
surroundings first in the house. On the first floor was the kitchen,
dining room and the front room. At least there was a TV in the front
room. There was also a half bath just off the kitchen. I went on
upstairs to discover there were three bedrooms and a full bath. The
first bedroom was lived in. You could see that by just looking at the
things inside. The other two bedrooms were similar and definitely
designed for a girl. Their walls were covered in a pink wallpaper with
little flowers on them, they had a regular sized bed and a dresser with a
large mirror. I looked in the closet of one of them and found it empty,
the other was a different story. In the second girlish bedroom was
dresses and skirts hanging there along with slips. The dresses did look
a little small to me but then I thought maybe her daughters probably were
not very tall as most girls were, Of course I was very big either for a
12 yr. old boy. I was around 4 ft. 8 inches in my stocking feet and only
weighed about 100 lbs.
Auntie called me down to eat so my exploring had to end for now. Lunch
was great she had made my favorite Macaroni and cheese. She gave me a
glass of milk too. It took us only about a half hour to eat. I told my
Aunt I'd go get my luggage and bring it in. She said Okay and gave me
her keys to open the trunk.
I opened the trunk and immediately saw It wasn't my luggage. I ran back
into the house and told my Aunt.
we both then went back outside. She just shook her head. I took one of
suitcases out and opened it. IT was full of some salesman's stuff. You
know papers and samples. The other contained the same things.
She told me not to worry, she'd take them back to the bus station in the
morning and see if they had my luggage in the unclaimed department. What
could I say but agree with her.
With it being to late now Auntie said we'd do it in the morning. I said
Okay. It wasn't until bedtime I realized that I had nothing to sleep in.
I went and told my Aunt. I told her my PJs were in my cases. She just
said not worry shed find something for to wear for the night. I said
okay and went to take my bath.
A few minutes later she knocked on the door and said there was some
things on the bed in the room I'd be staying in for the summer. I called
back out okay. I finished my bath, wrapped a towel around me and headed
for the bedroom. It wasn't the empty room but the one that had all the
girls clothing inside. I looked across the bed and there was a nightie
and a pair of panties. I called down to my Aunt telling her these were
girl's clothes. She said not to worry as it would only be us there for
the night. It did make sense as I could very well sleep in my clothes I
wore on the bus. So I went on over and put on the nightie and panties.
I wasn't happy with them but what choice did I have. It felt strange,
not weird strange, just strange. I couldn't put my finger on it. Auntie
called me to come back downstairs for some cookies and milk before bed.
I reluctantly went down and she just smiled at me, like it was normal for
a boy to be in a nightie and panties.
I just hopped we would be able to retrieve my luggage tomorrow. I ate my
cookies and warm milk and went to bed. It didn't take long til I was
fast asleep.
The next morning I awoke to the smell of fried bacon in the morning. I
heard my Aunt calling to me come-on breakfast was ready. I didn't even
think to change, I went down just as I was in the nightie. So did you
sleep well? she asked. Yes I replied. She said okay. It was a big
breakfast with eggs, bacon and homefries. She also made some cinnamon
rolls. It was great, even at home I never had such a large meal this
early in the day. She said while we were eating we'd go and see if we
could locate my suitcases. I said that's fine with me. After eating I
told her I'd go change and quicky went to my room only to discover my
clothes were gone. Aunt Mary, I called out where are my clothes. She
came up into my room and said I'm sorry I just put them in the washer
this morning, not thinking we were suppose to leave. I don't have a dryer
so they are soaking wet. How am suppose to go get my luggage? I asked.
Well, she said, maybe you could wear something in the closet. There's
only girls clothes in there. I said. Yes, that's true. she continued.
but I can't let you stay here by yourself. Lets just see if we can maybe
get you into something comfortable. With that she went to the closet and
pulled out a blue skirt and a white blouse. But, I exclaimed I'll look
like a boy in a dress. Not so she replied., this is a skirt. But I'm
still a boy. I answered.
Yes you are, but a very pretty boy. she said. A little make-up and no-
one will know what you are. I knew I had been mistaken for a girl before
because my sister had messed with my hair. Let's try it and you will see
for yourself. I really had little choice again. Maybe I wouldn't have
to get out of the car I thought and nobody would see me. I reluctantly
agreed to her request. Soon I was dressed not only in the skirt and
blouse and a training bra as well. Auntie said all girls my age wore
them so I should so as not draw attention to myself. I guess it made
sense but what did I know, I wasn't a girl.
Again it felt strange to me to dressed as I was. Auntie said to wait
downstairs while she got dressed. My nerves were on edge, what if
someone saw me, but then again no-one knew me there. The thoughts still
rumbled around in my brain as Auntie came down and said we were ready as
we could be. Then the realization hit me I'm going to be outside in
girls clothes. Again I felt panic becoming to overwhelm me. Auntie
grabbed my hand and before I knew it I was outside and in the car and
driving towards town. The bus station luckily wasn't crowded and I had
to go in, only because only I knew what my luggage looked like. Once
inside we returned to mistaken luggage to the Lost and Found Department.
My Aunt inquired if there was any unclaimed luggage and was told sorry
but nothing had been turned in by anyone. Great I thought, here I was
away from home and no clothes to wear. Auntie looked at me and said
sorry but we will have to make do. Back in the car i started to cry.
What's wrong sweetie? she asked. I have nothing to wear . I said. Sure
you do., she replied., There is lots in the closet at home. But I'm a
boy. I said still sniffling. Are you? she asked. Look in the vanity
mirror above the visor and tell what you see. I pulled down the visor
and there looking back at me was a pretty little girl. We will make this
a fun summer for you, I promise. she answered., Maybe you may want to
