anyways. Why not?" she said to herself. "If this is a new start, why not
be a new me? The best me I can be. Why not?" she said allowing her smile
to widen. Dakota giggled, wondering if her new next-door neighbors heard
her inane babbling. "I'll bet it's an old couple or something," she said
to herself. Talking to herself had always made her feel better. "Even
cheerleaders can get lonely," she reassured herself on particularly hard
nights in her earlier youth. Shaking away bad memories, Dakota crossed
the room and picked up her bedazzled iPhone, beginning a search for
"salons in Quebec, Canada" on Google. She found a little salon called
Salon D'Ongle Milan that was only two minutes away. Seeing that it closed
at 7, she looked at the clock on her phone seeing it was 5:50 at that
moment. With a little squeak, she realized she'd have to call right now
if she wanted to get somewhere/anywhere tonight. She thought for a
second, "Why not do it tomorrow instead?" but dismissed this thought,
realizing she'd have to start acting like a decisive woman not a wander-
lusting teenage girl. Although Dakota told herself to act strong, she
could not disguise that she was frightened. She knew Canada was supposed
to have nicer people than Kentucky did but men were men and people were
people. So upon calling up the salon and hearing a friendly sounding
woman's voice, she felt immensely relieved and the woman on the other end
must have been confused by the emotionally boisterous girl on the other
end. The woman, named Annie, could book her for a full makeover at 6:05.
Quietly ecstatic to know she would feel so different in so little time,
Dakota a little too excitedly said, "I'll be there pronto" with her
Southern twang booming before hanging up, a smidgen embarrassed.
Wiping away the existing tears from minutes before, Dakota walked across
the room in an as gingerly and as feminine way as her pregnant belly
would allow her, to look at herself in the mirror. She began taking
mental notes.
Looking down at her uneven nails, she clicked her tongue in distain.
"Thought I'd never see the day my nails would be this short. But there's
nothing some extensions and French manicure can't do.," she said
brightly. "ooohhh. Or maybe I'll do a nice cherry red. Or maybe pale
blue. Oh, magneta might be cute." Dakota wasn't a very smart girl. Having
received an A in her life and judging her intelligence as such, she too
knew she wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. She never tried much in
school, opting to be a cheerleader and be quarterback arm-candy. She
never really liked it. She always wanted to help people yet instead she
spat upon those who weren't popular. Although nobody would ever have
known it, she never really liked herself. However, with her impending
motherhood, she was finally ready to try and do good for another life
(the one she was creating) and she felt sure in herself that she could
make the best of her new setting if she believed in herself and worked
hard enough at whatever job she could find. "You is only as confident as
your image... ", she reassured herself in her Kentucky drawl as she ran
her tiny fingers hands through shoulder length, shaggy, and slightly

Her little hands began to shake and form fists as she turned away from
the mirror. But Dakota forced herself to calm down. Closing her eyes, she
used her whole body to take a deep breath. "Let your tension out," she
whispered to herself before releasing her breath and opening her eyes.
Yoga had done her worlds of good thus far in her pregnancy. She'd have to
continue it soon as she was completely settled in in Quebec. After
composing herself, Dakota faced herself in the mirror again. "Nothing a
completely different color, cut, and style won't do," she said to herself
with a smile that exposed that ol' gap tooth of hers.
Realizing that she had simply been standing there naked for some time,
Dakota decided that there was no time like the present. Opening both
sides of her bedside drawer, she multi-tasked by pulling out a pair of
pink panties with a white lace hem as well as a black maternity bra.
After putting on both, she walked across her small/country-girl-big
apartment room, opened her closet, and grabbed a pink and white stripped
mini skirt. Smiling to herself softly, she quietly said, "Might as well
wear this while I can." After shimmying into the skirt, Dakota reached
for a floral pregnancy shirt but before she could even touch it, she
stopped. She shrugged as if to say, "Why not?" and with only herself as a
witness, moved her hand to the right, grabbing a short sleeved, silky,
billowy red blouse with white buttons down the back and ruffles across
the front. "Even with assholes out there, a girl never does know when
they're gonna meet the right guy. I'm not THAT pregnant anyways. Only
like two months. I can still be sexy if I want, lol" thought Dakota
optimistically, spelling out "lol" in her head as she spoke. After
stepping into her favorite shoes, a pair of leopard print booties, Dakota
returned to the mirror. Even she had to admit, she didn't look half bad.
"Why not accessorize a little? Just cuse'," Dakota said with a giggle.
Reaching past a box of tampons, she grabbed mascara and a tube of shiny
pink lip gloss. After applying her mascara like she had done for years
and finishing her lip gloss application with a smack of her lips, Dakota
went to secret drawer inside the coffee table where she now kept all her
jewelry. She couldn't help being a bit paranoid, she was inexperienced
after all. After putting a ring with a purple gem on her left ring
finger, she picked out a pair of huge, thin gold hoop earrings that she
placed carefully in front of the mirror. After putting two silver bangles
on each wrist, she went to said mirror. Not perfect but, she was going to
be at the salon in about 10 minutes, so why complain? She finished the
picture by putting her earrings in, putting a bejeweled headband on top
of her short hair, and popping a piece of pink bubble gum in her mouth.
The last nice boyfriend she had told her she looked cute chewing gum so
she had done it ever since. She shook her head, hearing a feminine
jangle. She smiled. It was a habit of hers. When ever she felt like she
might cry, remembering she was a girl made her feel comfortable in her
own skin. She sighed confidently. She may have gotten there in a crazy
strange order but she was finally ready to go the salon nonetheless.
Grabbing her purse, which contained her wallet, lipstick, tissues, and
tampons (wouldn't be needing those anymore), Dakota stepped into the cold
Canadian air. She shivered. "Oh fiddlesticks, Dakota. You ain't in
Kentucky no more. It might be summer but it still Canada. You gonna need
more clothes than that," she said as she returned inside for some warmer
clothes." She went back inside and grabbed a jean jacket from a hook,
before leaving the room again, remembering to lock the door behind her
this time.
As Dakota approached the stairs, she saw a well-dressed boy in his early
20s with cropped black hair and a kind dimpled smile. She was always a
softy for a boy with a dimples. She gave him a little wave with her
fingers and her responded with a head-nod. As she walked down the stairs,
Dakota mis-judged the correlation between the heel of her boot and one of
the steps. In the horror of what was about to happen, she screamed. But
before she could fall, he caught her. With her mouth open, she must have
looked like a perfect picture of adorable confusion. "Mister, you just
saved my life..." "Hey, you don't have to call me mister," laughing at
her Southern properness and continued, "don't worry about it. Are you
ok?" Dakota nodded. The boy's smile remained. "Then that's all that
matters." It was not until the boy helped Dakota to her feet that she
even noticed she was still being carried. She liked it. As she turned her
head away to blush, the boy extended his hand, introducing himself. "Well
my name is Alex, I'm in A108. You just moved in right?" As Dakota took
his hand, her voice caught in her throat for a moment before she said,
"I'm in A109. So you're my neighbor? " She laughed. "To think I thought I
would have some old couple or a weirdo next door. Just my darn luck that
like this time I am like actually lucky." Dakota blushed again. She
hadn't meant to say that last part. Alex returned her honesty with a warm
smile. "Surprised someone like me is your neighbor huh? Well, to clear it
up, I go to McGill. Senior there." After a moment of awkwardness, Alex
clapped his hand on his face. "Oh my, I'm so sorry. I didn't even ask
your name or where you were from. I'm so stupid. Can you forgive me"
Dakota giggled at his shame. "Don't worry, I think I can find it in my
heart to forgive you. I'm Dakota. I just moved here from Boring,
Kentucky. It's nice to meet you." Alex raised his eyebrows, "Boring,
Kentucky? Is that like actually a real place?" Dakota giggled again, "You
bet it is." Alex looked at his watch, "Shit... well, I've gotta go get
ready for something now, but you, me, and Junior over there," he said as
he pointed at her stomach, "should talk sometime." Dakota looked down at
her feet, beaming so much it almost hurt. "I'd like that.," she said.
"Well, I'm right next door if you need anything... nice to meet you." ,
said Alex as went into his room. "Nice to meet you too," said Dakota as
he closed the door. She hovered there in a hypnotic state for a moment.
"What a sweet guy," she thought. Just then she realized she was going to
be late to her appointment. "Ah rats!," she said and she ran as fast as
her legs would take her.
Hearing her heels on the steps, Alex opened his windows. As she ran down
the street, he smiled a cruel smile. "Could not have worked more goddamn
perfect," he whispered in a voice filled with menace.
Alas Alex is not the only one who is not as they seems... if only Dakota
knew that.
20 minutes earlier...
Nate woke up feeling groggy. He had absolutely no idea what was
happening. Look up, he saw the walls of what looked like a bad motel.
"What is going on," he groaned, thinking he must have gotten really high
the next before. Looking to his right, he saw a rhinestone covered pink
phone. "Did I get laid last night," his mouth mouthed. Look over his
blanket covered stomach, he felt something was strange. As he moved the
blanket, his mouth dropped... it would appear he was pregnant. "Jesus
christ!" he yelled! He got up to the mirror and saw that he not only had
a pregnant stomach but appeared to have a vagina as well. In horror, he
reached down. There was some comfort in seeing it was plastic but none in
the fact it would not budge. Hyperventilating, Nate also saw that there
was a huge gap between his previously perfect teeth and that someone had
pierced his ears. As he tried to make sense of what was happening, felt
something under his foot. Reaching down was hard but do-able as he picked
up the note. "You can't live the way you live without consequence, bitch"
it read. The note fell to the floor as a switch went off in Nate's head.
"OMG... is that... is that me?" said in a husky but cute Southern accent
with a quiver from Nate's mouth instead of his placidly charming
Connecticut tonality as he looked in the mirror. It was not Nate who was
standing there anymore but Dakota... and looking at her pregnant body,
she began to cry...
