"Clark! Are you up yet?" my Dad called from downstairs. I groaned and
rolled over.
"Coming Dad!" I yelled back. Having been disturbed from my deep sleep I
decided that I might as well get up. Sliding out of bed I opened the
curtains and then walked over to my wardrobe to decide on what to wear.
After a bit of a debate, I decided on a blue short sleeved t-shirt and
some skinny jeans which I laid out on the bed. I then picked out a
matching bra and panty set and then crossed out into the hall to take a
shower.
After my shower, I wrapped a towel around my waist and another around my
hair and then headed back to my room to get dressed. Once in my room, I
removed the towel from my waist and then slipped into the bra and
panties followed by the jeans and t-shirt. Now dressed, I sat down at my
vanity table and did my makeup. I decided that I'd go light today and
simply put on some eyeliner and red lipstick.
Satisfied with my look I took off my last towel to reveal my black hair
which fell down to just past my shoulders. I tied my hair into a
ponytail and then I picked up my school books and handbag before heading
downstairs for breakfast.
"Morning Dad, morning Mom," I said to my parents as I entered the
kitchen and sat down at the table.
"Hey, sweetheart," my Mom greeted me. "What have you got there?" She
asked noticing the piece of paper that I placed on the table.
I gulped nervously. "It's a permission slip," I explained as I passed
the slip to her. "For cheerleading tryouts." My Dad looked up and I
caught his eye."
"That's a wonderful idea sweetie," he said smiling at me. I turned
towards Mom who had a frown on her face.
"I don't know son," she said shaking her head. "Remember that we talked
about this."
"Martha!" my Dad exclaimed. "It's just cheerleading. What's the worst
that could happen?"
"Come on Mom! Please?" I pleaded looking at her with big puppy dog eyes.
That usually softened her up.
"Remember what I had said when you wanted to join the lacrosse team?"
Mom continued not relenting. "You need to be careful, you don't want to
expose yourself."
"Mom!" I whined getting tired of the same old lecture. "I can control
myself. You know that and besides I might not even make the squad," I
admitted truthfully. My best friend Pete and I had practised a bit but I
had my doubts about how good we really were. "All I'm asking is for a
chance."
My Mom sighed finally relenting. "Fine," she said grabbing a pen and
signing the sheet. "But if anything happens I'm pulling you off the
squad."
"Yes!" I shouted. I got up and kissed my Mom on the cheek. "Thanks,
Mom," I said smiling at her. I finished my breakfast and headed out of
the door to catch my bus. I couldn't wait to tell Pete.
"Oh no," I groaned as I reached the road where the bus stopped. I hadn't
realised how long our conversation had gone on and I had come out just
as the bus was starting to pull off. I sighed, "good job I chose to wear
jeans today," I thought as sped off through the cornfield.
This is what has my Mom worried every time I try to join a group or
team. You see I have special powers. I don't know how or why I have them
but I have to admit that they can come in useful at times, like today. I
was currently whizzing through the cornfield at superfast speed,
everything around me was a blur. I also have super strength. I can lift
up a car with my pinky finger if I wanted to which is why my Mom gets
worried.
She's afraid that I might accidentally hurt someone if I'm not careful.
I know that she's only trying to protect me but it can be a bit
overbearing at times. I mean it's not fair that I have to miss out on
things because of my powers. People think that I'm a bit of a loser.
I was drawn back to the present as I realised that I was nearing the
school. I quickly jumped over the fence and landed by one of the
dumpsters. I checked to see if no one had seen me, which they hadn't,
then my appearance and stepped out. Just in time to catch my friends
Chloe and Pete coming through the gate.
"Hey, guys!" I said as I shifted my books to make it look like I had
just arrived. Chloe stopped and blinked.
"Wha-how?" she asked, clearly confused.
"I took a shortcut," I explained nonchalantly.
"Through what? A black hole?" she asked. I chuckled inwardly. Chloe ran
the school newspaper. Her blonde hair was cut short in a typical guy's
style and today she wore a red hoodie and jeans.
My best friend Pete, on the other hand, was a bit more fashionable. His
black curly hair was in ringlets today. He seemed to have a different
hairstyle for every day of the week. He was wearing a deep red blouse
which had a low neckline showing off his chest a bit.
"So what did your Mom say?" Pete asked changing the subject. I excitedly
got the slip out of my handbag.
"She said yes!" I told him excitedly.
"What's this all about?" Chloe asked. Pete explained about the
cheerleading tryouts and she burst out laughing.
"You two? Cheerleading?" She asked between breaths. Pete and I pouted.
"I'm sorry," she said seeing the looks on our faces but I can't imagine
you two on the sidelines."
I opened my mouth to argue but then I got distracted as I spotted her,
Lana Lang.
Over by the parking lot, I saw her get out of her car. As usual she was
wearing the school's varsity jacket which consisted of red and yellow
colours. She was the real reason that I wanted to join the cheer squad.
She was so handsome!
"I'll catch you guys later," I said distractedly as I headed over to
her. This was one of the few times that Lana was alone, maybe I would
get a chance to talk to her.
"Oof!" I said as I suddenly collapsed dropping all my books. It's not
fair, I thought to myself. I was only a few feet away from her when I
started to feel ill. Lana noticed me and came over.
"Hey, Clark is it?" she asked. I slowly nodded, she was finally talking
to me! If only I wasn't feeling so strange.
"Are you alright?" she asked concerned helping me up.
"I'm...fine," I managed although I didn't feel it. I started to pick up
my books.
"Here let me," she said as she picked them up for me. I leant against a
rail to catch my breath. As she picked up my books that's when I noticed
it. She was wearing a green gem necklace. The stone appeared to be
glowing.
"Hey, baby!" I heard some call out. It was Whitney, Lana's boyfriend.
He was on the cheerleading squad and currently wearing the uniform. He
kissed Lana on the cheek as she handed me my books.
"Are you alright Clark?" Whitney asked as he saw me. I nodded.
"I just need a few minutes," I replied, I still felt strange.
"I heard that you and Pete Ross were going to try out for the squad,"
Whitney commented. I nodded in response. Lana seemed impressed.
"Really?" she said giving me a smile. "Good luck. Maybe I'll come and
see you in the trials." With that, the school bell rang.
"Hey, Clark?" Lana asked and I looked up. "Maybe you should go and see
the nurse," she suggested. "You don't look so good. She turned around,
put her arm around Whitney's waist and headed inside
The moment they left, however, I suddenly felt fine. I stood up
immediately and didn't feel any dizziness or anything.
"Weird," I thought to myself as I hurried inside.
