"Hold my purse." The words every guy hates to hear. And girls know it,
too, and seem to love their guys discomfort. I don't know - maybe it's a
woman's way of marking her man as "taken", or maybe they think that a man
holding a purse is less likely to give in to his wandering eye. But I
think that they just enjoy the sight of the biggest, most macho alpha
male melting into a wimpy soy-boy as soon as he's handed his girlfriend's
bag.
You know what I mean. You've seen them in every clothing store and
boutique ; men sitting or standing around while their better halves try
on new outfits, trying to figure out a way to hold the purse that doesn't
make them look completely unmanned. I've been there, and I can tell you
from experience - it can't be done.
I heard those dreaded words from my girlfriend Julie just before she
entered the changing room with an armful of dresses. She must have seen
the look on my face, because she frowned, and said, "Oh, Eddie, grow up!
It's just a purse, and I don't want to leave it unattended. Besides, I'll
only be a minute."
A minute! Right! I knew Julie well, and guessed that it would take her
the better part of a half hour to get through that stack of outfits. But,
knowing that this was one battle I couldn't possibly win, I sighed, and
grasped the leather strap of the bag. Strangely, as soon as I touched the
purse, what felt like an electric shock passed through my entire body.
"Static?" I thought. "That's weird." Weirder still, Julie apparently felt
nothing, as she turned and entered the changing room.
I sat down, and placed the purse on my lap. I still felt a little strange
from that shock - not woozy, exactly, but a sort of tingling still filled
my body. As the minutes went by, the tingling seemed to build, rather
than diminish. Partly out of boredom, partly to get my mind off of the
tingling, I did the unforgivable - I opened Julie's purse and began to
rummage through it.
I know, I know, a woman's purse is sacrosanct - her own personal, private
space from which all men are excluded. But I couldn't help myself - no,
really, I couldn't - it was almost like my body had a mind of its own,
and I was merely an observer.
There wasn't much of interest to observe, I had to admit. A packet of
tissues. A hair brush. Two condoms. I had to smile at that - Julie was
always prepared for any eventuality! Keys. A few flat plastic containers
I assumed were powders and such. Then, I saw a little black cylinder -
lipstick.
As soon as I touched the lipstick tube, I felt another shock, similar to
the one before, but even more intense. I now felt as though I was in an
almost dreamlike state, as my body began to move without my will
controlling it. I saw myself bring out the lipstick, uncap it, and,
twisting the base, extended the bright pink column it contained. I felt
myself rise from the chair, and walk over to the mirror on the opposite
wall. Aided by the mirror, I raised up the lipstick and applied it to my
lips.
The color, Fabulous Fuschia ("Wait - how did I know that? No matter!")
suited me perfectly. I noticed that it was a perfect match for my own
fuschia colored hair ("Fuscia hair? When did that happen?" went through
my mind. "Oh, yes, it must have been when I got that cute asymmetic bob.
Last week, was it? Whenever!") I tossed my hair side to side, loving how
the two large golden hoops in each ear were alternately hidden and
exposed.
Turning back to the mirror, I checked, and yes, my lips looked perfect!
Well, almost perfect - I reached into my purse ("My purse?" "Of course,
mine, who else would it belong to, silly!") and, pulling out another
vial, I applied a coat of shiny gloss to finish my look. I stepped back,
admiring my relection, and smoothed out a wrinkle that had formed in my
skirt ("My skirt? Wasn't I just wearing khakis and a flannel shirt?" "No,
of course not, I told myself. I never wore pants if I could manage it,
skirts and dresses for a self-professed girly-girl like me! And it would
literally have to be a very cold day before you would find me wearing
flannel!") Regaining my composure, I took another look into the mirror,
and, on an impulse, puckered up and gave that gorgeous woman I saw
looking back at me a big air kiss - "Mwah!"
Count on Julie to reappear at just that moment! Laughing, she said, " I
should have known! Edie, have you ever met a mirror that you didn't
love?" I laughed back, for it was true, I really did seem to have a
compulsion to see myself in a mirror - it was almost like a bit of a
surprise to see such a vision of femininity looking back at me. "If you
can possibly tear yourself away from your reflection, how do you feel
about treating ourselves to mani-pedis?" Julie asked.
"Definitely!" I exclaimed. "But first, I want to try on that cute little
red dress that you were just looking at. Maybe that black one, too. Don't
worry, I'll only be a minute."
"Oh, and Julie, one more thing," I said. "Hold my purse?"
