The Sweetest Thing

Chapter 3
Kayla made sure to ease away from her house, driving responsibly
knowing her father would be watching, and then floored the car the
minute they turned the corner, until she got to the end of the next
side street.
At the stop sign, she pulled over, hysterically laughing at her
father's innocent comment, having to fold down her own makeup mirror to
fix herself when she finally calmed down.
"It wasn't that funny," giggled Alex as the laughing became contagious
as she started up again.
"Oh my gawwwddd." Kayla laughed again. "I'm so so sorry my cute friend,
but you damn well know it was."
Finally she was able to gather herself as she wiped her face and took a
minute to repair her makeup. She'd snicker a few times, still thinking
about his comment and then for the next block or two through the
residential neighborhood, she practically flipped Alex from his seat,
making sure they were clear of the bordering streets before he left the
house for the weekend.
"I knew he didn't like me, but I never thought he hated me that much,"
said Alex, thinking about it as they drove.
"Well maybe he hates the old you, but he doesn't hate my new cute
friend," replied Kayla.
"Stop it, you know what I mean," said Alex.
"Don't worry about?" said Kayla. "Be happy he just funded a dinner this
weekend, and some of the shopping on my agenda."
"Yeah I don't feel right about that," said Alex. "I don't want his
money."
"Well I'm sure as hell taking it," giggled Kayla. "Not that he isn't
always generous to me, and that I don't know how to put on the puppy
dog eyes to get some extra cash when I need it, but he never gave me a
red cent when my boyfriend was in the car, and he practically emptied
his wallet without you barely saying hello."
"What are you saying, Kayla?" gulped Alex. "That your own father was
hot for me right in front of you and with his girlfriend right in the
car with him?"
"Eeewww. That's gross, and I can't believe how your mind even works
like that?" said Kayla, repulsed. "But now that you mention it? Ya
think?"
"Forget I did, please?" said Alex, wanting to smash his head on the
dashboard that he suggested that.
"Yeah agreed," said Kayla, shaking her head at the thought. "What I was
saying though was that he never liked giving me money when he expected
the boy to pay for our dates, even though I never always made you. So
really that was the first time he ever did with you in the car with
me?"
"Sorry, and that actually makes me feel better thinking that even as
much as it confirms his hate for me," said Alex, reaching over and
touching Kayla's leg. "Don't be mad at me."
"I'm not?" Kayla squished her cheeks being silly. "How could I be,
since I'm out with such a cute friend on girl's night out?"
"Yeah maybe he thought you were going lesbo and should be the one doing
the paying," teased Alex.
"Well maybe I am, pretty girl," Kayla reached over, sliding her right
hand up his arm and softly touching his hair and face.
"Ohhh," sighed Alex. "I like that."
"And then again?" Kayla slid her finger down his chest between his faux
boobs and then slid the long nail on her index finger inside the
waistline of his jeans. "Maybe I'm not?"
"Oh I like that better," sighed Alex, closing his eyes leaning his head
back. "But that might be a bad idea right now, Kayla?"
"Huummm? Good point?" thought Kayla, pulling out her finger. "I guess
we'll just have to wait and see if either of those work out for you
then, cutie. Come on, let's go have a little fun doing some shopping.
It's daddy's orders."
As he regathered himself, calming down, she pulled into a spot at a big
fancy mall. Out of the car they went as he was at a mall he'd never
seen before as they walked across the parking lot like two typical
teenage girlfriends toward the entrance.
"No one is going to know us here, right?" Alex asked, stopping her
right as they hit the curb.
"No one in our school comes here, so chill," said Kayla, giving him a
nudge to start walking again. "We just drove almost forty five minutes
south, and this place is expensive."
"Ok cool," replied Alex as they walked up to the big glass doors.
"Hey," nodded a guy with a soft smile, holding the door for them.
"Thanks," said Kayla, casually striding right inside.
"So what's up?" said the guy to Alex as he followed.
"Just shopping, of course," Kayla said over her shoulder, looping his
arm. "Have a good one."
"My nerves, Kayla," whispered Alex as they strolled along. "This is
grueling already. What happens if a guy tries to talk to me?"
"You'll be fine," Kayla smiled as they headed inside Old Navy. "You
keep your voice soft, talk and you move on. No big deal, just like I
just did."
Alex nodded, settling down as they browsed, and Kayla would tease him,
holding up a few tops against him. For the next half hour, they went in
and out of girls stores, browsing at an almost dizzying pace and then
finally headed to the food court for something to eat.
"Pizza sound good?" asked Kayla.
"Sure, I am a little hungry?" said Alex. "Normally we have big meals
for thanksgivings, but not so much today. Just turkey and some
stuffing. It was too crazy a morning for my mom."
"You're only getting a slice anyway in those tight jeans," Kayla
casually pinched his ass. "Go get us a table."
Alex smirked, rolling his eyes and then found a table, sitting down. He
barely rested his pocketbook on the table and it was like vultures were
eyeing him up, as over came a guy.
"Hey can I join you?" said a guy, dropping down his burger and soda.
"Sorry, my friend will be right over," Alex replied as the guy filled
his mouth like a slob. "She's just getting our food?"
"Whatever?" said the guy, rolling his eyes, leaving quietly.
He felt instantly relieved as he had blown off the guy pretty easily,
staring over at Kayla in line, hoping it would move faster but his
respite was short, as next came a much older guy.
"Hey, on your break?" asked the guy, sipping his soda.
"What?" said Alex.
"From Macy's," said the guy. "You're one of the girls in the makeup
area that does the perfume samples when you walk through, right?"
"No, sorry," replied Alex.
"You sure, because you smell so amazing?" said the man, coming next to
him and smelling the air.
"Eewww." Alex grabbed his bag and got up to get away from him.
"And you smell like shit," said Kayla, dropping down their tray on the
table. "Now get away from our table, and beat it creep."
"Wow?" said Alex, not expecting any of that from either of them.
"Thanks."
"Not a problem. Now eat," smiled Kayla, tossing her bag on the table
and taking a bite of her hot slice. "But isn't my boyfriend supposed to
be the one saving me?"
"You never stop do you?" said Alex, rolling his eyes and biting his
pizza. "This was all your idea."
"I know," smiled Kayla as she chewed. "And no, I never do and that's
why you love me?"
"No, that's not the reason, but if you would have brought your
boyfriend here instead of me," said Alex. "Then he would have handled
it."
"You know,I'm not so sure about that?" teased Kayla. "He's got no balls
these days?"
"Hey, what's up ladies. This is my little brother Todd, and I'm Ben," a
guy with his buddies interrupted.
them as they came up to the table.
"And I'm not interested, Ben," said Kayla, not even missing a bite,
sticking her hand in his face like a stop sign.
"Well, we were just asking about..." Ben began to say.
"About nothing," said Kayla and flicking her wrist shooing them. "Go
away."
"But..." said the other guy.
"Byy--Byyee," said Kayla, waving him off without even missing a bite.
"Whatever, bitch?" said the guy, turning around. "You didn't have to be
that rude. I could give a shit, and really Todd is shy and interested
in your little sister, anyway."
Kayla almost spit out her, laughing as the guys turned away and Alex
didn't know whether to be pissed or disturbed.
"Is he kidding?" said Alex. "We don't look anything alike?"
"Nothing?" laughed Kayla. "Not even a fucking shred of resemblance,
except that we're both brunettes."
"Even so, my hair is dark brown and yours is light," said Alex, shaking
his head as he ate. "I don't know how you girls do this. I can't even
finish this one slice. I'm grossed out. Can we leave now?"
"You're kidding, we've been here an hour?" said Kayla, rolling her eyes
and sipping her soda.
"You committed to having fun with me this weekend, and it's
Thanksgiving weekend. Everything's open late."
"Yeah, but my feet hurt already, and I can't get hit on again," sighed
Alex. "Let's just go home."
"Oh my gawwddd Alex! My father was right? You are a drag," said Kayla,
shaking her head, annoyed.
"You realize that kid was like maybe twelve that just liked you, and
you're going to let that ruin the night already,
like some little pansy. He was too scared to even say hi."
"Please, you made me too sexy or something," whined Alex. "Please,
let's just home change and cuddle."
"So that's it?" said Kayla, tossing up her hands. "I did all this shit
for us to work on our relationship, have some fun, explore deeper
inside both of us, and now all you want to do is cuddle? Seriously?"
"I know you did, but I changed my mind," said Alex. "You girl's say
that's a woman's prerogative, right?"
"But you're no woman, are you?" said Kayla, getting pissed and folding
her arms.
"Well, no," replied Alex, realizing maybe he shouldn't have said that.
"And I certainly don't see a man in front of me, do I?" Kayla asked,
leaning back in her chair, looking ready to kill him.
"Please Kayla, don't be like that?" said Alex, quiet like a mouse.
"Get up. Let's go," said Kayla, pushing her plate towards him. "Your
feet hurt and I'm fucking done with the bullshit. I bought, so you
clean the fuck up. I'm not your mother, or your slave."
"Ok, I'll throw it all out," sighed Alex, taking his half eaten slice
and her crust plus the sodas and tossing them away. "But please!"
As he turned around after stuffing their garbage in the trash, she was
already half way out of the food court and heading for the escalator.
He had to scamper in his heels, scurrying to catch up as he weaved past
some people as she bolted, not looking back.
"Excuse me," mumbled Alex, passing people down the elevator. "Sorry,
pardon me. Kayla wait! Please slow down."
"You can rest your feet in the car, Alex," said Kayla, pushing him off
her arm as he caught up. "Move your bitchy little ass, because you
won't have to worry about it anymore once we get home."
"No, stop," said Alex, needing a second. "You're right, I'm being a
little bitch. I'm sorry. Just forget I said anything and let's go
shopping. Please, I'm done whining?"
"Really?" said Kayla, making a serious face and folding her arms,
tapping her foot. "Just that fast you're done being a little bitch.
Done giving me a hard time?"
"Yeah, well it was maybe just my feet hurting, and well a lot of it was
my nerves," replied Alex, looking up at her and then down. "Plus being
hit on. I'm sorry about all this! This is nothing like dressing up like
Dorothy, as going from that to this is a lot to deal with."
"Maybe you're right?" nodded Kayla, looking at him. "I know I used to
get a bit irritable too when my feet hurt me when I first started
wearing heels all the time, and sometimes boys cute as they are, can be
a nuisance."
"See," nodded Alex, taking her hand. "So we can get past that, right?"
"Can we?" asked Kayla.
"Please, I know we can," said Alex. "Come on, don't make me beg. Please
say we can? Come on?"
"Ok? I think so," nodded Kayla, taking him by the hand towards a store.
"Let's go in DSW."
"Oh sure," said Alex as she dragged him in and down the aisles,
browsing. "Whatever you want?"
"Here, try these flats," said Kayla, kneeling down and undoing his
ankle boots. "These are cute, right?"
"Kinda sparkly," sighed Alex, looking down at them as she slid them on
his feet and then he stood.
"But wow, much more comfortable."
"Ok, then it's a start, right?" said Kayla, touching his face and
nodding. "Better?"
"I think so," smiled Alex, flexing his toes inside the shoe.
"Yes or no?" said Kayla. "I'm in no rush right now. We can try on as
many flats as you want?"
"No. They're fine," nodded Alex, not wanting to push it. "I can feel my
toes again."
"Ok, give me my earrings," said Kayla, leaning in and unscrewing the
backs. "These are heavy, so maybe that was too big a change, too?"
"Oh, that does make a difference," sighed Alex, rubbing his lobes with
his fingers.
"Here, pop off the nails while I pay," said Kayla, holding his finger
and breaking the sticky double tape, ripping his right thumb nail
before taking a baggie from her purse. "Put them in here, and the rings
too, ok?"
"Wow?" said Alex, surprised. "You sure?"
"Yup," replied Kayla, scraping some glue for him off his nail and then
popping off the other thumbnail.
"I want you to be more comfortable. It's a long weekend, and we can
take it slow?"
"Cool," nodded Alex, feeling relieved to pop off the next one. "Sure.
This is much easier."
As she went in line to pay for the shoes, he sat popping off the nails,
happy to feel his finger tips and then sat scraping off the gluey
adhesive. In a few minutes she returned with his ankle boots in the bag
as he wore out his flats, feeling so short now as she walked, holding
his hand in her stilettos, like she was towering over him now, even
though in bare feet he was two inches taller than her.
As they walked out of DSW, they headed down two stores and then he was
more than a bit surprised as they walked inside Justice, and she walked
him right past all the racks into the dressing room area.
"Let's get these jeans off you too, ok?" said Kayla, pulling closed a
curtain and unbuckling the fly before undoing the zipper. "You're not
used to pants this tight."
"Well in track I am, but these are a bit stiffer," replied Alex as she
pulled down his pants.
"Yup definitely stiffer, and you're more used to things that are softer
and more stretchy," said Kayla, sliding off his shoes and pulling them
off his ankles. "Step out."
"So no more jeans, either?" questioned Alex, now getting concerned as
she stood back up.
"Lift, honey," said Kayla, pushing up his arms and pulling off his top
right over his head.
"Jeans take a little time to break in, so maybe I should have washed
them a few times first, but my bad.
I saw a few cute things we'll try that you should be more comfortable
in."
"Kayla wait, are we in the right store?" gulped Alex, grabbing her arm
as she tried leaving quickly after scooping up his clothes. "We didn't
even shop here for a second, and all I saw when you dragged me back
here were..."
"Were really cute things that you'll be more comfortable in? Now stop
it. I rushed you right back not to embarrass you and I shop here all
the time," interrupted Kayla, twisting his arm off her and holding his
wrist taut for a moment before letting go. "You said it yourself, you
were more comfortable as Dorothy, and when your mother dressed you all
those years ago. Now keep your voice down, because if you cause a
scene, I will make like I don't know you, and leave you here to run
through the store, throwing a tantrum in your underwear."
"Sorry," said Alex, staring at her nervously as she folded his clothes,
intently placing in the shopping bag with his ankle boots. "You know I
wouldn't."
"Good, then just sit still, have some patience and you won't need these
either," said Kayla, pulling the inserts from his bra and tossing them
in her shopping bag. "I'll be right back with a few cute things to try
on that you should be much more comfortable in."
He peeked out, seeing her begin browsing through racks of dresses and
then pulled the curtain closed, seeing a mom and her daughter head
toward the room next to him. Kayla seemed to be taking her sweet time
as he snuck another look, soon losing sight of her as she walked
towards another part of the store.
Five, then ten minutes felt like an hour, until finally she came back
inside with only a small rectangular white package, ripping it open.
"Sit and I'll do these for you," Kayla ordered, having him sit on the
bench. "These are more soft and stretchy like you're used to in track,
and then we'll try on a few things."
"Oh, pantyhose," said Alex, trying to get this over with and leave.
"Sure no problem. I've had them on before, and I guess I'm getting a
new dress."
"See, you really are more comfortable then! Stand up tall please Alex,
and I feel so much better," said Kayla, snugging them up as he looked
down and then she hugged him. "I'm so sorry I rushed you. I feel like
an idiot that I was insensitive about this. You could have told me you
felt more comfortable in just a pretty dress."
"I'm not exactly sure that's how I meant it, but sure," nodded Alex,
loving the emotion as she hugged him. "I still love you so much."
"I love you so much too honey, let's just wipe off the too much makeup
thing a little too, ok?" said Kayla, taking a wipe from her purse to
his lips and then wiping a bit above his eyes. "You're kind of a big
girl for this store, and hopefully they have your size in the back for
one dress I really love."
"Excuse me, miss," said a woman, peeking open the curtain. "I found it,
and I have a few others that are really pretty in her size, if you
don't like it on her."
"Thank you so much, but I'm hoping it fits first," said Kayla, wiping
at his cheeks. "Step into your flats, Alex."
"I'll hang it here and come back with a few others," said the woman,
hanging the dress on the wall hook as Kayla tossed the makeup soaked
wipes in the small trash bucket. "I'll come back with a few accessories
if you'd like?"
"Sure. That sounds perfect," said Kayla, grabbing his hips and
twisting. "Hand up, and let's hope for the best."
"If it doesn't, just don't stress it. We've got so much cute stuff that
will," said the woman. "I was tall when I was young too. Eleven is such
an awkward age."
"Kayla?" Alex sighed as she dropped the dress over his arms and slid it
down. "Did she think I'm?"
"Shush, and let's see," Kayla answered, straightening it on his body
and the quickly zipping it.
"Isn't this like?" gulped Alex, looking down as she yanked on the back.
"Like really really cute, and stop fidgeting. If you rip this bow
before we even leave the place, I'll kill you," said Kayla, getting
excited and knotting the bow on his back. "Oh gawd, I think it's gonna
fit. Turn around, sweetie."
"Kayla, I'm not eleven," said Alex, looking down at his dress.
"Well, not yet," smirked Kayla. "I told the saleswoman your birthday's
not until Sunday."
"My birthday is Sunday, but I'm not..." Alex began to say as the
saleswoman opened the curtain.
"Oh honey!" said the woman, smiling. "She's so precious. Here, this
with her hair like that would be gorgeous on her. Mind if I try it on
her?"
"Thank you, and that would be awfully nice of you," said Kayla, tapping
her chin and watching Alex cringe as a stranger wound a big bow around
his top pony.
"I think delicate works on her. She's got such soft features," said the
woman, pulling the ends of his hair and tightening it. "She seems like
more the girly girl type."
"See, it's not just me that thinks that, Alex," smiled Kayla, playing
it up. "But it's up to you honey. I don't want to force her. I'm
thinking she's just not sure, so we'll try on everything before we
pick, if that's ok?"
"It's so hard when they get to this tween age. Picky, wearing makeup
and all the drama," said the woman, flicking her wrist and then walking
out. "Trying to be teenagers when really they're still little girls.
Take your time, princess."
"Thanks, and twist for me, Alex," said Kayla, holding up her phone and
snapping a few pictures.
"Please, Kayla," said Alex. "I'm not a little girl. Don't make me do
this."
"I'm not making you do anything. Dorothy was eleven in the movie, and
you were just so natural as her. said Kayla. "I shouldn't have rushed
you, since the last dress you had was when you were eight, but ten
almost turning eleven is a perfect age to pick up at. We'll start
there, and we've got all weekend to take baby steps."
"But I'm not Dorothy, I'm not an eleven year old girl," moaned Alex.
"Nether was Judy Garland when she played her. She was actually older
than you at sixteen, but played her perfectly. She was a natural and
well, don't kill the messenger... but so are you?" said Kayla. "Now I
am buying you a dress that you'll be comfortable in, like you asked me
to. If not this one, then another one, and at least one more for
tomorrow in case we need to pick up where we might leave off today."
"You're kidding?" gulped Alex. "Please, Kayla?"
"See, I love it when you say please, young lady, and don't worry I can
always return it, but that will be based on your behavior starting
right now. Spin around and I'll unzip you," said Kayla, twisting him
around. "Now I thought this would be easy after how quickly you picked
the shoes, but obviously not. I'll be outside looking at a few more
things I thought were cute, so the quicker you come out and show me how
you look in each one, then the faster we can get this over with. We on
the same page now?"
"I can't believe it, but...Yes," mumbled Alex, as she spun him towards
the wall, unzipping his dress and untying the bow.
"Good, and careful not to get any makeup on these," Ordered Kayla. "You
do and we'll be buying a lot more than two dresses, that trust me, I
won't let go to waste."
Alex was mortified trying on dress after dress and coming out, modeling
like a little princess. Ruffles, crinoline, bow after bow, were debated
by Kayla and the saleswoman as Alex just stood beet red with each
exchange of ideas. He was the tallest girl in the store geared towards
grammar school girls, and as fast as he dropped and jumped into each
dress, his changing speed really didn't matter, as the women took their
time each time they evaluated him, and Kayla snapped some shots with
her phone.
Changing of bows, the addition of a layer of a petticoat and some cute
earring options took some time and each time he came to show them off,
until eight dresses later, he was back in the first one Kayla had
selected.
"Still my favorite, and I like that one second?" said Kayla, pointing
to one of the other dresses. "Alex?"
He just glared at her, nodded, almost pleading with his eyes as she
smiled, awaiting the sound of his voice.
"So you love it?" smiled Kayla, turning on her video.
"Love it?" gulped Alex, staring at her and then seeing the saleswoman
looking at him attentively.
"Yes," said Kayla, twisting her neck inquisitively. "I need to hear you
say it Alex, and don't be nervous. You look so pretty in that, and if
you don't, we'll keep trying on things until we find something you do?"
"No, please, I love it," sighed Alex, defeated. "Please can we get it
and go?"
"Of course we can," smiled Kayla, getting up and speaking to the
saleswoman. "She'll wear it out please, and we'll take the accessories
for it."
"Perfect. I'll be right in with them," said the woman, as Kayla was
taking him back in the dressing room.
She zipped him up and then buttoned the two top buttons snugly, as this
would be the dress he would now be stuck in until she'd be ready to let
him out. She then tied the big bow on his back and then spun him,
opening her makeup case and stroking his lashes. She dabbed a hint of
pale pink on his lips with a brush, and then powdered his face a little
with her compact.
He looked down now, wiggling the soft multilayered tulle skirt that
hemmed just past his knees as memories of his old Halloween costume as
Belle flashed through his mind. It was half a lifetime ago though, as
never did he expect to be back in such a delicate dress, yet there he
was trying to wiggle his toes inside the sparkly black patent flats.
After trying on so many dainty dresses, he stood now like any precious
little girl in a new dress, anxious to get out of the dressing room, as
Kayla had put him in her favorite selection.
The slim, short sleeve bodice was completely covered in gold glimmering
sequins from the rounded neckline down to the waistline, sparkling in
every direction. Beneath it, two layers of gold tulle petticoats formed
a delicate underskirt and a single sheer over layer of tulle only added
some daintiness to its tantalizing flair. At the mid-section, a rich
burgundy red satin sash separated the skirt from the bodice before
being looped into a big bow at the back of the skirt, and then he
looked down, realizing the saleswoman had returned, clipping little
gold sequin bows behind his toes, accenting the front of each flat.
She handed Kayla a small package of little gold earrings with a tiny
dark red round stone dangling from the post. From the packaging they
went as she looped them into his ears, and then a matching delicate
bracelet was clasped around his right wrist.
From a small bag now, she stretched a long piece of burgundy satin
ribbon that matched his sash, handing it to Kayla as he cringed as she
tightened his top pony before winging it around, tying it in. If that
wasn't enough, next came a gold sequin bow that matched his bodice, and
mirrored the bows on his flats, yet seemed immense before it left his
sightline as she twisted it into his hair.
A few adjustments of bows atop the ribbon and a few bobbi pins from
Kayla's purse being hidden to keep things straight, and it was over as
the saleswoman collected all the tags.
"She's precious," said the woman as she left. "I'll meet you at the
register."
"Oh gawdd! You really are! Seeing you like this makes me wish I knew
you when you were younger," said Kayla, giving him a hug. "We really
would have had some much fun together back then, and I can only imagine
how you must have felt but I'm so glad we can experience some of these
feelings together now."
"Kayla, I don't even know what to say," said Alex, looking ready to
cry, touching his dress. "Or how to answer that? You made me a little
girl again?"
"Again?" sighed Kayla, touching her chest and getting emotional. "Wow?
I love you so much, and now I don't even know what to say either, but
I'm so glad we could bring out some of these repressed feelings."
"I don't think I said that right?" said Alex, shaking a little as Kayla
hugged him, immediately seeing him quiver. "But I love you too, its
just..."
"I know! I know," sighed Kayla, wiping a tear as she got emotional.
"But you don't need to say it a different way. I understand no matter
what. You told me enough when you said you'd loved this dress, honey."
"I did?" gulped Alex.
"Of course, and I'm glad we're really feeling more comfortable now,"
said Kayla, straitening his dress "It's not too tight like the jeans.
The flats are easy for you to navigate in, and your tights are nice and
light and stretchy. We good now, Alex."
"Yes. Can we please just go?" said Alex, looking down and shaking his
head.
"Sure, come on and let me go pay." Kayla took him by the hand, leading
him from the dressing room.
"The saleswoman told me about a really cool idea while you were trying
things on. Something Dorothy really needed, and I got you an
appointment."
"An appointment?" moaned Alex. "For something eleven year old girls
need?"
"No, something Alex at any age or gender could really use?" said Kayla.
"But I think it'll be easier for you now."
He was mentally exhausted as they had beaten down any opposition he
had, being photographed in every outfit and then could almost care less
as Kayla paid and led him from the store by the hand.
She walked him down the escalator as he was afraid to utter a sound
now, a young girl about to turn eleven in a dress that looked adorable
on him. She walked him now past a series of stores as he was worried
about what else she had in mind with every window she looked into.
As they turned into the next wing of the mall, he almost had to laugh
himself, as right inside Build-A-Bear they went.
"So you want to do a unicorn, bear or maybe a bunny?" said Kayla,
looking at all the options and her watch. "We have a little time to
kill."
"Yeah, none," said Alex, rolling his eyes. "I'm not eleven, and I
bought you a teddy bear and I don't need you buying me one."
"No, my boyfriend bought me one, but I really don't see him here?" said
Kayla, with a straight face. "Do I Alex?"
"No, but I really don't want to build a bear," said Alex.
"Why not, it's fun and was it something you never got to do before?"
said Kayla. "Most little girls love doing it, and dressing them up all
pretty in here?"
"No, I've never done it, and I really don't want to," replied Alex,
annoyed. "Haven't you wasted enough money on me already?"
"You know, maybe since you won't fully open up to me like I hoped you
would, then come on," said Kayla, yanking him from the store. "I think
I know a man I can bring you to who you'll tell what you really want?"
"Kayla, wait?" moaned Alex, not liking the sound of that. "Please don't
bring me to any one."
Kayla was annoyed now as they turned out of the store and then dragged
him past store after store. Even in flats, he was lagging behind, as it
was amazing how fast she could move in stilettoes, pulling him along
with one hand and with the other filled with a few shopping bags.
When they turned into the center of the mall and he saw a long line, he
wasn't sure why she was dragging him towards it before he looked up,
seeing all the decorations.
"Is this...?" Alex began as she dragged him right to the back of the
line.
"For Santa," nodded Kayla. "It's long, because he just got here today."
"And why are we in this?" whispered Alex to her.
"Because he makes everyone happy," said Kayla, looking him right in the
eye. "Boys and girls of all ages. And right now I think you need that,
so maybe you won't have an attitude with Santa like you did with me?"
"But..." started Alex.
"But, nothing?" said Kayla shushing him and pulling him by the hand off
the line. "Just come with me and don't say a word."
Down the line she dragged him and then around a turn before she
stopped, lifting the velvet rope, bringing him under after cutting off
like three quarters of the line.
"Hey Ben, there you guys are? I finally got her little sister here,"
said Kayla, shoving Alex under the rope.
"Are you kidding me?" said Ben, immediately getting pissed. "You're
the..."
"The really late girls. I know we are," winked Kayla, taking his hand,
shoving some money in it and kissing his cheek. "But we made it just in
time with the money to pay for the Santa pictures, and I'm sure Todd
missed his little girlfriend."
"Are you serious?" said Ben, looking down at the two twenties in his
hand.
"Of course I am, and so sorry about blowing you off for lunch," smiled
Kayla, batting her lashes and touching his arm. "I was in a bad mood
with my sister being difficult, and then had to still get her a new
dress. But we're here now and really really sorry, so don't be that mad
at us, as wouldn't it be a shame if Todd didn't get to spend a few
minutes with his little crush."
"Yes it would, brother," said Todd, elbowing him. "Don't be a jerk!"
"You are some piece of work, aren't you?" said Ben, rolling his eyes.
"No, I'm just Kayla, and don't mind me fixing your pocket," said Kayla,
raising her brows while taking his hand with the money in it and
stuffing it in his pocket. "It's sticking out, and this is Alex by the
way, Todd."
"I'm so happy to finally meet you, Alex," said Todd, giving Alex a hug.
"I actually wanted to say hi to your sister. Tell her for me I think
she seemed really nice, but meeting you is even nicer. You seem more
like my age."
"Quite the ladies man I see, Todd?" giggled Kayla, leaning over and
looking him in the eyes. "Exactly how old are you?"
"Well, I'll be eleven in a few months," said Todd. "But how old is your
sister, around my age, right Alex?"
"Uumm sure," said Alex, mortified.
"And she's a bit older, so I think you two are perfect together,"
smiled Kayla, taking both of their hands and putting them together.
"Now how about you just hold onto her for me for a second Todd, and
I'll be right back."
Alex was ready to kill her, as suddenly he was holding hands with an
eleven year old boy who was smitten with him, as Kayla rushed away from
the line. He could see her chatting up at the front of the line and
then hurrying over to a kiosk off to the left, chatting with a young
woman before feeling some air near his neck.
"You smell so nice," said Todd, sniffing him. "My mom says the
prettiest girls always smell really nice."
"Uuuuuhhh...Ok? Whatever?" gulped Alex, not even sure how to answer,
all grossed out. "And is she here today? Like hopefully coming over
here any second?"
"No, just me and my dork big bro," said Todd, now rubbing his thumb and
stepping in front of him.
"No chicks until you got here, so you didn't need to have to worry
about her pulling me away from you."
"Oh thank gawdddddd!" moaned Alex as Kayla finally scurried back.
"Exactly," said Todd with stars in his eyes.
"No that's not how I me..." mumbled Alex.
"Everything ok, kids?" Kayla piped up, looking for his reaction. "You
look like you're getting along nicely."
"Just fantastic!" replied Alex sarcastically, giving her a look.
"Wonderful! I figured you'd be a perfect little lady while I was gone,"
smirked Kayla as she stopped, lifting up the rope. "So Ben, you'll be a
dear right and just watch the bags for a minute while I treat the
kids?"
"Wait what?" said Ben, caught off guard.
"We're still twenty minutes from getting to Santa, and I only need
ten," said Kayla, pushing all her shoping bags towards him. "We'll be
right there as I just paid for them to do a little something with her
hair for the picture."
"Where?" asked Ben, looking up. "Right at that kiosk?"
"Yup, and I hope you don't mind, but I thought maybe they could do a
little something with this handsome little devil too," said Kayla,
running her fingers through Todd's hair, playing with it. "Maybe just a
little gel or a flip and maybe you two could do one picture together
with Santa after the solos. It's all my treat, of course."
"Yes," yelled Todd, all excited, pulling Alex under the rope.
"Definitely!"
"We'll just be right there and never out of your eye sight," said
Kayla, touching Ben's back softly. "You're a great big brother."
She walked over to the kiosk as Todd followed hand in hand with Alex,
as he soon found himself staring at a kiosk with wiglets, pony tail
clips and a series of bejeweled hair accessories.
"Climb up kids, and have a seat," said the woman, having Alex climb
onto a stool.
Across from him, the woman seated Todd, who was now staring at him
uncomfortably as the woman stepped to Alex's left and began brushing
through his hair in the back. He turned now, seeing her take a thin
flat iron from her vanity and then stretching a thin section of his
hair behind his ear. It sizzled as it went in behind his ear, and then
she spun her wrist as she slid it down slowly before releasing a twisty
curl.
He glanced down, seeing it as she placed it on his shoulder and then
slowly but surely she glided it through the back of his head. It took
no more than five minutes until she had created thick coils throughout
the back of his head, and then began separating them with her fingers.
When she put down the flat iron, she handed Kayla a black mushroom
shaped sponge the size of a baseball and a hand full of bobbi pins
before she lifted his top pony with her left hand. She stuck her right
index finger and thumb inside the sponge, opening the middle and the
lifted it upward sliding it down his pony.
Once she pulled the sponge down against his head behind his big bow,
she took the point of a rat tailed comb just in front of his left ear,
pulled out a thin long section and then repeated it on the right. With
two odd strands hanging down near each cheek, she dug the rattail
beneath his entire hairline just behind his forehead, this time pulling
his hair a touch loose and forward from the pony. She returned to the
sponge, dropping a dark thin scrunchie around it and then tucking all
the loose hair from the length of pony neatly behind the big bow.
Pin after pin now slid in, securing the rest of the length out of
sight, and then she pushed down it with her fingers as he felt it kind
of pop back up.
She took the small comb, smoothing over the hair atop the mushroom,
making some final adjustments and then slid her left hand into a thin
white glove. In the other hand, she lifted ? thin barrel of a jet black
wand from her counter while stretching the thin long section near his
left ear, and then ever so cautiously held the end of his hair as she
wound it up.
Ten second later, a thin corkscrew bounced off his cheek when she
released his hair, and then while he went cross eyed staring at it, she
would up the other. Just that fast now it was over, as she put down her
curling wand and then shook her aerosol can. Around him she circled,
mostly fussing in the back and then when it went down, she dug through
some drawers, taking a few dark brunette hair clips from the drawer.
She measured them against his head, checking the length and color and
then selected one, opening two little clips beneath it before snapping
it atop his forehead.
He could no longer see as it covered his entire face, and then he felt
her lift his chin with her index finger before shearing off the edges
with her scissors. It took two or three more fine snips until his eye
site was fully clear, and then he saw all the clips slide off her hand
into a small garbage can, and a big smile on Kayla's face, seemingly
approving.
She filled her hands with gel, jumping over to Todd and saturated his
head, lifting his hair upward. Through his hair her fingers went,
pulling it away from his ears and lifting it forward, creating a flip
as she lifted it off his forehead.
"Can I trim a little near your ears, honey?" asked the woman as he
nodded happily, and then just that quickly he was done as she sheared
only quickly at the sides.
"Wow, you are handsome, Todd," said Kayla, reassuring him as he popped
up out of the chair, feeling so happy as he looked in the mirror.
"They do make a cute couple Kayla, and what do you think, Alex?" asked
the woman, helping him from the chair so he could see in her mirror and
then walking behind him with a hand held one, showing him the back. "I
think your hair came out gorgeous, and this should make for an adorable
Santa picture if you ask me."
Clipped to Alex's forehead now, were faux bangs that blended in
seamlessly with the hair on his forehead that was raised just a touch,
to blend the seams. At each cheek a single ringlet fronted his ears and
then behind his head the twisting of the flat iron had created loose
curls. Atop his head now instead of a top pony, the ponytail had been
reshaped into a thick big bun. The mushroom shaped sponge was nowhere
to be found hidden under all his hair and used to create the dramatic
bun shape. Still, sitting prominent though, the huge gold sequin bowtie
bow sat atop the red curled ribbon, both now serving as ornate window
dressing, in front the big bun instead of the top and followed by
pretty curls in the back.
"Sweetie? What do you think?" asked Kayla, trying to illicit a
reaction, looking at him dead in the face. "She loves her curls."
"Uummm? Very fancy?" gulped Alex, twisting his neck, mesmerized by
himself in bangs and his face flanked in curls."
He needed a minute to soak up being the daintiest girl in a fancy
dress, and such an unexpected hairdo, yet that was nothing compared to
having a little boy take his hand.
"I think she'd be the prettiest girl in my school for sure," said Todd,
taking his hand. "Come on, my brother's almost up there and I've got a
whole new list of things I need to ask Santa for now."
He could tell by the look on Kayla's face that she was thrilled with
his look, and winked at him to stay calm as he was suddenly half
running hand in hand with a little boy who was so enamored with him.
Being her girl for the weekend now seemed like nothing, suddenly almost
an afterthought, as instead he was terrified by a boy's sweaty palms
gripping his hand like he never wanted to let go. He tried telling
himself the kid was just a touch more than half his age, but he felt
half his age himself now, stuck in the shiniest dress, feeling his bun
snag on the ropes for a moment as they ducked under.
"That was some ten minutes?" said Ben as they returned. "You're lucky
we had twenty. I almost had to let people skip me."
"And you're lucky we only used nineteen," said Kayla, tapping his arm.
"If it was up to your brother, you could have let the whole place skip
you, because once those curls went in and her hair popped up, I think
he would have skipped off to the altar with her, instead of Santa Claus
land."
"Well, he is a ladies man just like his big bro," replied Ben, rubbing
Kayla's back, getting closer.
"Well, little bro may have scored today, but the other ladies' man will
have to settle for a handshake, my money and another kiss on the
cheek," said Kayla, shaking his hand and planting a much softer longer
kiss on his cheek this time. "You're a great guy, but I have a
boyfriend."
"Damn, I hope he knows how lucky he has it," said Ben, disappointed.
"Well I hope so too, because all I care about is supporting his needs,
and my boyfriend is gorgeous, both inside and out," said Kayla, looking
over at him, making eye contact. "Really, he's got a lot stuff going on
in his life right now that I'm helping him through, but in the end it's
just going to make both of us stronger people."
"Next, please," yelled the girl dressed as an elf. "Hop right up there
on Santa's lap, princess."
"Go sweetie, and smile big," said Kayla, as the elf took him by the arm
up there as his girlfriend was watching his every move. "You look
beautiful."
He walked over with the girl in an elf outfit who was probably about
his actual age, then found himself being hoisted up onto the middle
aged mall Santa's lap. He looked over, seeing Kayla holding up her
phone and watching his every move as there was Alex sitting on a mall
Santa's left leg, being asked questions about what he wanted and if he
had been a good girl this year.
Kayla did her best not to giggle so she could capture the moment,
including sound, with her phone, as Alex's cheeks looked as rosy as
Santa's, mortified at being talked to like a little girl with the whole
mall line looking on. When finally their conversation ended, Kayla ran
in, briefly straightening the edge of his dress, crossing his ankles
and putting some of his hair on his shoulders before the camera could
begin snapping.
"Sorry. Go ahead," said Kayla, racing out as the flash bulbs began
popping.
"Wow, she really is pretty, and you really are amazing with her. But
stronger people huhh?" said Ben, impressed yet not giving up that easy,
touching her arm, looking at her. "You wouldn't just be saying all that
to blow me off, would you? There really is a guy in the picture right
now, right?"
"Sorry, and trust me he's very much in the picture," giggled Kayla,
putting down her phone now after snapping a few still and tapping Todd.
"Now go jump in there with her, honey, because that's a picture my
boyfriend will certainly never forget when he gets a good look at it."
There they were sitting on each side of Santa as Todd reached over,
again taking Alex's hand as he look stunned, having shot after shot
taken and then never felt better as Santa hugged them goodbye. Alex
almost ran back to Kayla while Todd was doing his solo shot, and then
looked up at her with big puppy dog eyes, almost willing her to leave.
"Ok, well, we better get going," said Kayla, nudging Alex before
turning and hugging Todd. "It was great meeting both of you."
"Thanks for not really being a bitch, and for making the little guys
day," said Ben. "Here's my number in case it doesn't work out with you
and your boyfriend, and I hope you'll call me to maybe set up another
time they can see each other."
"Well sure, if that's one of the things she asked Santa for, but I'll
find that out later," Kayla pointed to her cheek and gave Alex a little
nudge. "Kiss the cutie pie good bye pretty girl, and let's get moving."
Kayla stopped, softly tapping her foot, awaiting him to do as she
asked, as to him it was like she was almost putting him in front of a
firing squad as he leaned over and kissed Todd on the cheek.
"Bye," said Alex, seeing the pink hint of gloss he still had left on
his lips now atop Todd's cheeks, almost feeling ready to puke, as he
stepped away taking Kayla's hand
"I'll never wash my face again," smiled Todd as Kayla led Alex away
from the crowded center mall.
"Kayla, please no more little boys," begged Alex. "Just thinking about
what he said that is going to haunt me forever."
"Oh stop it. You made that little boy's day, and maybe his year. You'll
get over it, but that kid might stare at your picture forever," laughed
Kayla, swinging their hands as they walked. "So no little boys ever
liked you when you dressed up when you were little?"
"Do not tell me my mother said boys did?" said Alex, getting angry.
"That part would not be true?"
"No, she didn't, but I'm still guessing there were a few that did, and
you just didn't pick up on it at that age?" said Kayla. "Did Belle
maybe get home and have more candy in her bucket than some of your
friends after trick or treating at some cute boy's houses?"
"I don't know?" said Alex, thinking about it. "I was little then, and
only cared about the candy."
"Well boys change obviously I guess, especially given your current
circumstances, that I really don't need to tell you that?" said Kayla.
"Some boys like their sweets, and some their candy."
"Well, it was candy back then, and nothing more," said Alex.
"Ok, but as pretty as you are, trust me boys will be happy with you as
their eye candy for a while, but eventually every boy is looking to
fulfill that sweet tooth," said Kayla, softly patting his back. "Now
I'm just trying to help you feel more comfortable, so just be careful
flirting."
"Me flirting?" Grumbled Alex. "I have no idea how to do that, and it's
you I wanted to fill my sweet tooth. I didn't ask to be anyone's eye
candy?"
"We never do! Sure, we all want to look pretty and our best, but the
rest, well....?" replied Kayla, shrugging her shoulders. "Really it's
just easier to accept that you're certainly looking really sweet to the
fellas, aren't you?"
"Do you ever stop?" said Alex, rolling his eyes, smacking himself in
the forehead.
"No," giggled Kayla. "And that's why you love me, pretty girl. Time to
boogie!"
"Oh no, you did mean like boogie on out of here, didn't you?" said
Alex, looking at where she was leading him.
"Of course I did not, and I told you I made an appointment for you,"
said Kayla, picking up the pace and dragging him in.
"But Kayla?" Alex arhued, seeing the dance studio.
"But what? I'tll be fun, and if you recall, I told you how much Dorothy
really needed it," said Kayla as they stopped walking. "So let's learn
something, because I intended to party the night away dancing with you
on Saturday, but if you'd rather put this off until tomorrow, I can
call Ben and I'm sure you two could little love birds could go share
some sweets together."
"Please, just don't leave me here?" gulped Alex, starting to walk
again.
"Hi, I called earlier about the eight thirty pm starter class, and the
woman from Justice told me if I showed you my Justice Rewards card
there was a free class she could try?" asked Kayla, taking out her
card.
"Yes, it's a thirty minute trial course for newbies, and here's our
brochure that if she liked it you can enroll her in one of our regular
programs," answered the girl at the counter. "Honestly, she might be a
bit too old for it, and it's starter tap lessons, but we'd allow her to
try it since it's the last freebie of the day, and not too many younger
girls will be in it at this hour?"
"Yeah, I really wasn't looking for tap for her, but I see here you have
private lessons?" said Kayla, looking at the document. "She's a bit
shy, and I'd rather her have some personal attention."
"Sure. What are we thinking, ballet, lyrical?" asked the woman.
"Well nothing like that?" said Kayla. "I'm not looking to enroll her in
dance for recitals. Thing is she's not a natural as a dancer, and I
just want her to be able to hold her own. So I was thinking maybe a
little hip hop, party stuff, and some moves so she can hold her own.
You know, a few things she could do with her friends or out at a party,
and feel comfortable dancing."
"Oh sure," said the woman, pointing. "We have a curriculum where she
can Boogie a little, Nae Nae, a few group dances and we mix in some hip
hop. Something where she can use these things as a base, and I can have
the instructor take her right after the free tap class, so you may as
well take advantage of it?"
"Yup, that's perfect," smiled Kayla, handing over her credit card. "She
can go dressed like this or does she need an outfit?"
"I love that dress she's in, but for this she's fine and no point
investing in tap shoes, plus none of the kids in the trial class will
be in them," said the girl. "As for the class, she might be a bit
overdressed, but as long as she's in a dress or outfit she can move in,
then it's perfect, especially for private lessons, but I'll let you
talk to her instructor about that."
"Thanks, and I love this dress too," said Kayla, soaking up the
compliment. "We just came from taking Santa pictures, so I wasn't sure,
but I figured if I needed a leotard or specific dance outfit that you'd
have them here."
"We do, and no rush," said the girl, coming around the counter and
taking his hand. "Come with me Alex, and we'll get you started, honey."
He hated the idea of being in a dance class, and then in he went,
suddenly mixed in with young girls of all ages. He stood listening to
the instructor and it was mostly easy as he followed the arm gestures
and then the tapping motions.
With a dozen girls from seven or eight to early teens, it wasn't a tap
class for preschoolers as quickly the movements progressed. He was
working pretty hard just to keep up, but the good news was thirty
minutes seemed to go by in the blink of an eye before they brought him
to a private room.
He sat sipping a water bottle, taking a break as Kayla chewed off the
ear of the private instructor before finally he was called over by the
man. He started with the basics of hand gesturing and shaking his hips
before learning some steps and then in no time, he started to memorize
the steps.
It was almost an hour more of dancing before he looked up, seeing Kayla
chatting with a group of teens in the class, who came in cheering him
on as his lesson ended. Ordinarily he'd be delighted to gawk at a group
of girls with their boobs hanging out in skimpy dance wear, yet instead
he was more thrilled to hurry out, away from them.
"Good job, sweetie." Kayla hugged him as he ran out to her, like he was
hugging his mother after opening a toy on Christmas.
"Please, no more, Kayla," begged Alex, almost not wanting to let go.
"Please."
"Relax, you did really well!" said Kayla, stroking the back of his
head. "Within the first day, you already don't look like you're so
stiff anymore."
"Yeah, and I'll never be stiff again if you keep me like this," whined
Alex. "Please, I don't want to be a little girl anymore."
"Ok," said Kayla, kissing his forehead and then gently ending the hug,
looking into his eyes and holding his shoulders. "And I doubt that very
much, but obviously this isn't the time or place to deal with the
stiffness issue. How about we change you back into your jeans and maybe
hit the movies? It's only across the parking lot, so we'll change you
and we can make a late night showing."
"A movie with my girlfriend, in jeans and heels?" nodded Alex. "That's
sounds perfect!"
"Sounds funny to hear you say that, little princess, but it's a date,"
giggled Kayla, taking him by the hand. "Come, we'll change you in the
bathroom really quick."
With pep in his step, he almost pulled her arm off, hurrying into the
family bathroom and locking the door. He kicked off his flats and like
lightening was out of his tights, never happier when she helped him out
of his fancy dress.
He jumped into the snug blue jeans and never minded for a second her
re-stuffing his bra. When his top went on, he changed in his own
earrings and fastened his bracelets, while she slipped him back into
his shoes, ready and never happier to be in heels.
A few cringes as she brushed through the back of his hair and pulled
the pins, removing the bun were seemingly pinches of joy as he didn't
complain for a second, having his pony pulled out once the bangs, bows
and ribbon came out. It took only seconds to regather the loose section
at each side and then it was once again, brushed into her hand,
suddenly a relief, even tightly bound in the top pony.
Across his cheeks went her blush brush, and then a few touches of his
eyes shadow were really all they had time for now as she tossed
everything in the bags and unlocked the door.
Just seeing the mall exit sign as they turned from the bathroom was
enough to made his pumps feel like flats again, as the track star
inside the tight jeans felt like he could run a marathon in heels,
never happier as they clicked from the mall.
Inside the car, she handed him his pocketbook, instructing him to redo
his lips and recoat his lashes as he folded down the vanity mirror and
followed the simple instructions as off they drove. Simple things like
this with no real skill, still seemed pretty strange to be doing to
himself, yet he handled it easily and then followed her request,
brushing and spraying his hair. When they parked she helped him press
his nails back on then then once she fixed herself for a minute in the
mirror, they were out of the car.
In fifteen minutes time, they were teen girlfriends once more, as Alex
was never happier made up, again looking more his age and like any
other cute girl at the movies. Kayla purchased the tickets and chose
the show, but he could care less what they saw, just relieved he'd be
sitting in a quite theater with her.
"One large popcorn and one sprite please," said Kayla, ordering after
they walked in.
"Fourteen dollars, please," said the teen boy.
"Oh, let me for a change today," said Alex, opening his pocketbook and
then rummaging through it, realizing he didn't have any money. "Oh
shit! How stupid of me. I don't my wallet!"
"Oh Alex?" giggled Kayla, shaking her head.
"Seriously?" said the kid, rolling his eyes. "Then how did you get in
here tonight?"
"Well, I paid for that, but it's ok, right?" said Kayla, leaning across
the counter. "She really did forget it and you could let her slide just
this once, right?"
"No, I could get fired," answered the guy.
"I'm not telling if you don't?" said Kayla, softly reaching over,
grabbing some napkins and touching his hand.
"You know what?" smiled the guy, looking around and taking a pen from
his apron. " Sure, for your phone number, Alex."
"Are you kidd..?" Snarled Alex as Kayla interrupted him.
"Well you're really cute, Randy," said Kayla, flipping the guy's
nametag and then stepping back, taking Alex's hand. "And I'm sure most
girls must jump at the offer, but do realize we're on a date, right?"
"You girls are too much?" smiled Randy. "Like I should believe that?"
"Well, how about you throw in the licorice," asked Kayla, reaching
across and grabbing the package, ripping it open with her teeth and
then touching his arm. "And then we show him Alex. Open up babe."
She turned now, taking one of the pieces of red licorice from the
package with her teeth, before sliding it deeper into her throat and
then turning towards Alex. He was half stunned, not needing to be told
to open as his jaw dropped, taking the licorice into his mouth.
Just that fast he almost couldn't believe he suddenly engaged in an
erotic French kiss out in public in front of the zit faced boy, as his
adrenaline took over, halting his gag reflex as he felt the licorice
push deep into his throat. Gasps and moans now filled his ears as he
popped open his eyes, realizing that their stimulating kiss was
momentarily holding up the line. When the kiss ended, he looked around
at all the guys behind him in line, looking dumbfounded with big
smirks, seemingly enjoying their kiss, and then noticed a few of their
dates looking completely repulsed.
He had no idea if he even had chewed the licorice or swallowed it
whole, but it was the most erotic public display of his life, unable to
wipe the smile of his face.
"So you're going to throw in a nice stiff salty pretzel rod too, ok?"
said Kayla, opening the jar on the counter and holding the pretzel rod
just outside her mouth.
"Yup!" nodded Randy, taking off his apron. "Line closed, everyone. I'll
need to go on my break now."
Randy tossed his apron on the counter and made a bee-line for the men's
room, as Kayla wiped her lips with her fingers.
"And that's how you do it?" winked Kayla, pecking one more kiss and
then wiping the stray lipstick from around Alex's mouth.
"Oh my gawwdd. That was so hot!" whispered Alex to Kayla. "So you think
he's?"
"You'd know better than me, and there go two more guys to the bathroom
that were staring?" smiled Kayla, biting the pretzel rod and handing
another one to Alex. "But from what I saw when he dropped off the
apron, I don't think he even made that far, so good thing we got our
popcorn already, because you know I don't like it buttered."
"You're so bad," laughed Alex as Kayla grabbed the popcorn.
"Maybe but that's why you love me, pretty girl," replied Kayla with a
smirk, pinching his ass. "Now grab the soda and get your sexy ass into
the movie."
Into the big movie theater they went, as he could care less that she
picked a sappy chick flick as they sat sharing a popcorn and a soda.
Her erotic public expression had eased his mind after the trying last
few hours, as all he wanted to do was put it behind him and he still
couldn't believe that she had done that.
He was dying to make out with her, but holding hands with the
occasional peck here and there as they sat close in the last row were
more than enough for the time being. Every time he initiated a deep
kiss, he grew nervous, feeling a strain beneath his own jeans, and they
both knew they needed to slow things down or heds have a bigger problem
than Randy did.
When it ended, she repaired his lips, then hers during the credits and
they walked out with their arms together, sharing a few laughs. In a
way it was almost like he had forgotten she had asked him to dress up
at all, as he didn't complain for a moment, looking at her so lovingly.
"Let me treat you to coffee, and then we'll go home," said Kayla, as
they came out. "Come, let's just walk over to Starbucks. I could use it
after I chose that sappy movie, and we've still got a forty five minute
ride home"
"Yeah, I wouldn't want you falling asleep on me?" teased Alex, kissing
her.
"Oh, I didn't say I was sleepy, but it's been a long da,y and we were
both up early," smiled Kayla, raising her brows. "But what about you?
You mean you're not ready to go right to sleep the second we get to my
house?"
"I think you already know that answer," joked Alex.
"Gee, not from what I can tell?" joked Kayla, casually rubbing her hand
across his crotch as she pulled open the Starbucks' glass door. "After
you, dear?"
"No," said Alex, taking the door. "Ladies first."
"Fine, age before beauty, little girl."
Kayla went in first and looked back, winking at him. "And I can do this
all day, so don't get too cute.
Oh wait, you did that already today, right?"
"Yes, and I hate sequels," said Alex, throwing up his hands. "You win,
so just order the coffee, please!"
"Smart girl," said Kayla, patting his arm as they walked up to the
counter. "I'll have a Grande Caramel Cocoa Cluster Frappuccino Blended
Coffee."
"Sure. Name?" said the worker.
"Kayla with a K," said Kayla.
"And you, Miss?" asked the worker.
"I guess the same," said Alex, and then giving his name. "Alex."
"We'll bring them over when they're done," replied the girl.
They went towards the back of the store, sitting at a small table as
Alex sat fumbling with a napkin and then looked up, seeing a big guy
aproaching them.
"Kayla, here you go," said the guy, bringing over the drinks and
putting hers down. "And Alex, here's yours."
"Thanks," said Kayla, taking a sip. "So good."
"Huumm?" Alex sipped as the guy began walking away and then stopped,
taking a double take. "That did hit the spot."
"Wow! Oh my gawd! It's you," said the guy, making eye contact with
Alex. "You're that Alex!"
"Huhh?" swallowed Alex, instantly unable to speak.
"I'm sorry," said the guy. "I can't believe it's you. Here at this
Starbucks and looking so..."
"Please stop?" Alex interrupted him, almost choking on his straw,
looking down, feeling ready to puke. "I..I..."
"I'm sorry I apologize for startling you," said the guy, taking a
napkin and wiping the foam from the table that might have spewed from
Alex's nose. "I'm so sorry. I suck at talking to pretty girls."
"You know her?" Kayla asked, giving Alex an interrogative look.
"Well, not exactly," answered the guy, wiping his palms on his
Starbuck's apron.
"We were introduced at a party last month, but I guess you probably
don't remember me? I can't say I blame you if you don't? I was dying to
talk to you, but I chickened out. There were so many guys around you,
so I figured I probably didn't stand a chance."
"You gave me such a hard time about so much shit, and now I'm finding
out you were at a party picking up cute guys," said Kayla, folding her
arms with a smirk on her face. "So you really are holding out on me?"
"No, really I'm not?" said Alex, backpedaling. "I haven't been out at
any parties like that. He has me mistaken for someone else."
"Sorry, girls. I did not mean to touch a nerve, or get in the middle of
whatever you're fighting about, but this is you, right?" The guy asked,
flipping through his phone and then spinning it around. "You were
Dorothy, right?"
"You took a picture of me and kept it on your phone?" asked Alex as his
heart fell into his chest. "Let me see that?"
"No but..." The guy started to say as Alex ripped the phone out of his
hand.
"Alex, what the fuck!" Kayla said, as with his frantic move he knocked
over her drink and sent her phone to the floor.
"Oh shit," gulped Alex, seeing Kayla quickly get out of the way of her
coffee, but then pick up her phone with the screen destroyed.
"I'll get the mop," the server said.
"I'm so sorry," said Alex, mortified. "I'll pay for that."
"It's ok. Calm down," said Kayla, wiping the phone with her napkins.
"You're lucky I can do almost a backflip from this chair, and the
coffee missed me."
"Avoiding that was impressive," said the guy, quickly wiping up the
spill.
"Thanks, cheerleader." Kayla tilted her head, leaning into a cheer pose
for a second and then tapping Tony's arm. "But seriously? You took a
picture of her without her knowing? That's really not cool?"
"Believe me, I would have loved to take a selfie with her, but I
promise I didn't. This is from the event promotor's website," said the
guy. "So then it is her? That is you, Alex?"
"Well, yeah," said Alex, looking at it again calmly this time. "And she
was there too. She was Toto, and all those guys were just our friends
from school being idiots."
"Toto, wow. Cool," said the guy. "I'll be right back with another
Frappuccino for both of you. I'm sorry again I made you spill it, and
I'm Tony by the way."
"It's fine, Tony," said Alex. "It's just been a long long day."
"Well I get off in twenty minutes, and there's a party at one of my
buddy's houses not too far if you girls are interested," said Tony,
almost shaking as he talked to them. "I could drive us, or if you want
you could follow me there."
"Yeah ..uuumm wow but uuhhh... No thanks," said Alex with some
attitude. "How about you just get me the Frappuccino instead?"
"Sure," said Tony, heading away with his tail between his legs.
"Wow, you make quite an impression?" teased Kayla. "Guys of all ages
just freaking love you, don't they?"
"Please stop," said Alex, getting angry.
"Ok, but at least he's the right age," giggled Kayla. "But he was
sweet, and you were a bit nasty, don't ya think?"
"You kidding?" said Alex, making a face. "You're telling me this?
You've been blowing off guys all day."
"Because I have a boyfriend, and they are just jerks hitting on us,"
said Kayla, rolling her eyes. "This guy obviously really likes you, and
he's really cute."
"What the hell are you telling me to do?" asked Alex, getting annoyed.
"Go on a date?"
"I didn't say anything like that, so get your mind out of the gutter! I
would hope you'd honor your current relationship, but if you needed
some room like I've been giving you to find yourself, then I could be
at least a little understanding as long it wasn't behind my back," said
Kayla, rolling her eyes. "I didn't tell you to do anything, so don't
get so defensive. I'm like the most supportive person you've ever met,
and most girls would be pissed for weeks if you broke their phone on
them."
"You have me so confused, Kayla," said Alex, grabbing his forehead.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to confuse you, and I can only imagine how
hard it is for you with all we've worked through today," Reasoned
Kayla. "It's just there are jerks and really good people, so just like
somebody else who just happens to be sitting across from me, he seemed
like a really nice person just trying to connect, yet it all came out
wrong."
"Thanks," nodded Alex awkwardly, softy smiling. "I think?"
"You're welcome, and I still love you so so much," said Kayla, reaching
under the table and taking his hand. "Just don't be a bitch to the nice
guys. The guy remembered your name and had to have that picture
bookmarked, or the image kept locally to bring it up that fast. He's
been kicking himself that he chickened out talking to you the first
time, and has been thinking about you for like a month."
"I doubt it," said Alex. "Maybe he just likes Dorothy or something?"
"Not maybe, and it's not the Dorothy from the movie he likes," teased
Kayla. "It's a huge compliment. There were a lot of hot girls there at
that party, and its you he remembers."
"Ok, enough," giggled Alex. "I wouldn't say it being a compliment was
how I'm thinking about it."
"Don't think of it like a guy?" Grinned Kayla. "I'd think if you really
were, that would be worse?"
"What does that mean?" said Alex.
"Uuumm like think Randy from the movies?" teased Kayla, cracking
herself up. "Meaning like boys are disgusting? Meaning like maybe if we
were in his room right now, that shot of you is somewhere, let's say
handy... like very handy where he can gaze into your pretty brown eyes
on a lonely night."
"That's so wrong, Kayla," said Alex, sick to his stomach. "Did you have
to go there?"
"Probably not, but you broke my phone, so I need to get you back at
least a little for that! Now shush, here he comes," said Kayla. "He's
sweet and shy, so just be polite and we're out of here."
"So, here's another Frappuccino, and again it was amazing seeing you
again," said Tony, putting down the cup and extending his hand.
"Oh good to see you too," replied Alex, softly shaking hands. "And
thanks. Sorry if I was a little abrupt before, and made a mess. Like I
said, it's been a long day and maybe some other time?"
"Cool, I work here most week nights, and in case you change your mind,"
said Tony, twisting the cup and then turning, walking away. "That's my
number and call me anytime."
"Please don't say a word, and let's go," said Alex, taking his drink as
they headed outside.
"I'm not saying a word," Kayla said as they walked out of Starbucks and
back to the car. "I'm actually happy you weren't a jerk. He was sweet."
"Ok," said Alex, rolling his eyes.
"But then again," Kayla joked as they walked.
It was who she was, as Kayla couldn't help but tease a little, as even
Alex had to laugh at some of her snide remarks, before finally feeling
better, sliding on his seatbelt, ready to head home with her. He
slouched back in the seat as she fumbled with her keys, mentally
fatigued, staring out the window until he heard a sound he couldn't
believe.
"No fucking way," cursed Kayla, trying to start the car.
"Shit," said Alex. "Don't flood it, but try it again."
"Flood what?" said Kayla, trying the ignition again. "Is it my
battery?"
"Are you fucking kidding me?" whined Alex. "It sounds like it."
"Tell me you didn't forget to turn that light off before we went into
the movies," said Kayla, getting pissed, pointing at the sun visor
pointed down with the cover still open towards the ceiling.
"Oh crap," said Alex, pushing the light switch up and down before
snapping it shut and pushing it up. "You have jumper cables?"
"I've been driving six months?" said Kayla, getting out. "I don't have
a clue what I have."
They both got out now, opening the trunk and finding nothing but the
spare. As a few people went by, Kayla asked some strangers if anyone
could give her a jump, but not a person had cables.
"Give me your phone," said Kayla. "I'm going to have to call my dad,
and he'll come."
"Didn't he go to Tampa for the weekend?" moaned Alex. "It'll probably
take him like at least two hours, maybe more, to get here and he can't
see me like this. That'll be impossible to explain."
"No that'll be the least of our worries about how pissed he'll be at
both of us after we destroy his weekend he's been talking about for two
months," said Kayla. "He's been working his ass off lately, and now
I'll be probably pulling him out of bed with his girlfriend."
"Please don't do that. He hates me as it is. Call AAA or something?"
said Alex, thinking and trying to stay calm. "All we probably need is a
jump, and I think I know after today what it really means when my mom
says she needs a drink!"
"Wait? Finally a decent thought," said Kayla, leaning into the car and
grabbing Alex's Starbuck's cup from the cup holder. "Here! Call him! He
gets off any minute now, and maybe he can help."
"You want me to call that guy from Starbucks?" asked Alex with a gasp.
"Why not?" said Kayla. "We don't know anyone else around here, and
maybe he's got cables. If not, he's from nearby and he can probably
just help us."
"But?" Objected Alex.
"So you'd rather I call my father?" said Kayla.
"Not really," replied Alex. "Can't you call him?"
"Stop being an baby and just do it. He gave you his number, and you're
the idiot that left on the light and wrecked my phone," said Kayla,
holding up the cup. "Now turn on the charm and just do it before he's
gone."
"Crap."
"Here," said Kayla, turning the cup as he read the number, dialing.
"It's you he likes anyway."
With a look on his face that could kill, he hit send and couldn't look
at her as it rang.
"Hi Tony? It's Alex," said Alex, very nervously. "You know, we just
meet? Dorothy?"
"Hey Alex," said Tony, getting excited. "I thought I'd never hear from
you. Hi! What's up, change your mind about the party?"
"Well not exactly, but the thing is," Alex began to say. "We're parked
right outside the movie theater and our car won't start. Would you
happen to have jumper cables?"
"I'm not sure. I have my dad's car, but I'll check," said Tony. "I'll
be right over."
"He's coming over," said Alex, hanging up.
"See how easy that was?" said Kayla, rolling her eyes and shaking her
head.
They leaned against the car, hopeful and then with two minutes, Tony
pulled up in a small pickup truck.
He came over and opened the hood, checking the connections and then
trying to start the car himself.
"Ok, I think it is probably the battery, but I'm no mechanic," said
Tony. "If I could get in the back of this car, there might even be
cables, but I don't have the key. I think my dad doesn't trust me to
open it since last time I forgot to re-lock it, and his shit got
stolen."
"Father mad or not trusting you?" nodded Kayla. "I know the deal with
that, and I guess I'm about to experience it again. Give me your phone,
Alex."
"No, wait," said Tony. "I said I'm no mechanic, but let me call my
friend who is."
"That would be awesome," said Kayla. "Thank you so much."
Tony dialed up his buddy and explained the situation in detail. He
tried a few things while on the phone, checking under the hood and then
closed it while he finished the conversation.
"Ok, we'll be right there to get you," said Tony, hanging up. "Come o,n
get in and lock the car. It'll be safe here and Craig is at the party,
but he didn't drive there. Let's go get him, then we could swing past
his house and get the cables. If that doesn't work, at least he'll know
what to do."
"I can't thank you enough," said Kayla.
"No problem," nodded Tony.
They hopped up in his single front bench seat, as quickly Alex found
himself in the middle next to Tony. He was close but did his best
keeping his distance in the little cab, and then they pulled up at the
party to get Craig.
It was only a ten minute ride, and mostly uneventful with small talk
before Tony called Craig when they were a block away to come out.
"Hey man," said Tony, rolling down the window, giving his buddy a fist
pump as he walked over. "Thanks for helping out."
"No problem, and hey ladies," said Craig, talking in through the driver
side window. "Battery Huhh?"
"We think so," answered Alex shyly. "Thanks, and really appreciate the
help."
"Craig?" said Kayla, leaning forward getting a good look at him. "Craig
Lombardi?"
"Kayla?" smiled Craig.
"Oh my gawd," yelled Kayla, hurrying out of the truck.
"You know each other?" asked Alex, seeing his girlfriend hugging this
tattoo covered muscle head.
"I haven't seen you since what? Maybe eighth grade?" asked Kayla,
excited.
"Yeah that's when we moved down here," replied Craig, happy to see her.
"I go to engineering school here at the college at night with Tony's
older brother, and I work as a mechanic during the day to pay for it."
"That's awesome," said Kayla, giving him a hug. "You look fantastic."
"So do you!" said Craig.
"Thanks," said Kayla. "Craig and I went to grammar school together, and
he was a year older than me, but he was our hoop star. You still
playing basketball in college?"
"No, stopped growing in high school, and I'm only in school part time,"
said Craig. "I'm only 6'3", which is ok for a guard but for a power
forward, I'm too short. I bet you're still an amazing cheerleader
though?"
"Well, I'm alright?" replied Kayla, shyly batting her lashes. "So hey,
this is my friend Alex. She's my battery killer, at least we think
anyway?"
"Throwing you right under the bus?" teased Craig, extending his hand.
"Hi Alex. Same wise ass Kayla I see, except looking all grown up, with
a tighter one."
"Exactly, and then how about you get your not so flabby yourself ass in
the truck and help me out, college boy," teased Kayla. "It's late, so
we can reminisce and catch up on the ride. I've got to get home before
my father kills me for being out so and my friend is exhausted."
"Sounds good. Toss me the keys, Tony," said Craig. "We just tapped a
new keg, and you guys chill until we get back."
"Oh, I couldn't let you guys go alone, and you didn't have a drink, did
you?" said Kayla.
"I'd never drink and drive, especially around here," said Craig. "Come
on, you know me better than that?"
"Cool, but I still couldn't let you go alone?" said Kayla. "I wouldn't
feel right about that, and my dad might not be too thrilled if I let
anyone else drive my car with his permission."
"No, I meant them and how would I get it back here alone if I get it
started?" said Craig, giving her a look.
"Good point," laughed Kayla. "College is paying off for you I see?"
"Yeah, big time?" laughed Craig, shaking his head. "Either way, you
also do realize I need you even if I can't get it going and we have to
tow it somewhere? So hop in."
"Oh then I'll come too," said Alex. "I can't leave her alone."
"You won't be, and there won't be room for you," said Craig. "We've got
to stop at my house, get cables, my tool box and a whole bunch of shit
just in case, which as it is will take up half the front seat. You just
hang with Tony and we'll be back in a jiffy, hopefully."
"It's fine, Alex," nodded Kayla, taking his hand and squeezing it.
"Don't be worried about me. I've known him since we're little. I'll be
right back."
"Come on, the faster we get there, the faster we'll be back," said
Craig as Kayla hopped in the truck, closing the door. "The faster you
girls can hit the road."
If there was any urine in his body, it would have been impossible to
keep from seeping down his leg as he stood on the curb with a guy he
just met, as his girlfriend drove away with another man. Before he
could even feel sorry for himself, or even worse, be scared out of his
wits, Tony put his arm around him, softly touching his back and
gingerly gave him a soft rub.
"Come on. I don't bite," said Tony, seeing the tension. "And she's in
good hands."
"You sure?" asked Alex nervously.
"Yup," said Tony, walking a few steps ahead of him. "Come on. Let's go
have a beer?"
"You know I'm only fifteen, right?" said Alex, reluctantly following
behind him.
"There's no pressure to drink, Alex," smiled Tony. "And I won't have
one if you don't."
"Ok, cool," nodded Alex, barely feeling his legs moving as they walked.
"But I'm just curious?" said Tony as they got onto the porch. "So you
saying you've never had one?"
"No, I'm not saying that?" smirked Alex.
"Ok, then," Chuckled Tony, opening the door. "Either way is fine, so no
pressure."
"Tooonnnyyy," yelled a guy at the tap. "You're late! Where you been,
man?"
"What's up, guys?" said Tony, opening the door further as Alex now
stepped in.
"No way!" yelled the guy. "You brought a chick!"
"No, just a friend," said Tony. "Guys, this is..."
"Dudes, it's her!" interrupted the guy. "Loooookkk!"
"No way, man," yelled another guy. "It's Dorothy."
"Dooorrrooothhyyyyyyy," yelled about eight guys, collectively raising
their beers.
"Don't mind them," said Craig, protecting Alex. "They're half-drunk
already."
"Dorothy! Dorothy! Dorothy!" yelled the guys again, now being silly and
bowing.
"Her real name is Alex, you assholes," smiled Craig. "Don't mind them."
"Hi guys," waved Alex meekly, not even knowing if he should be
mortified or flattered. "Is there anyone here that hasn't seen my
Halloween picture?"
"Uumm probably not?" said Tony. "You're on their wall of hotties over
there. This is a frat house, you know."
"Oh gawwdddd," gulped Alex, before looking over at the guys eyeing him
up. "Maybe I will have that beer now."
"Cool sure, and they're harmless," said Tony, taking him to the keg and
filling a cup for both of them.
After a sip or two, Alex relaxed a touch as the guys calmed down,
coming over and turning on the charm, having normal conversation. For a
minute now he was revered like a celebrity they thought they'd never
meet, suddenly thrust into unavoidable selfies with some half drunken
boys.
Even those he had to laugh off as just boys being boys as they filled
up his cup after seemingly every sip. He enjoyed a few lighthearted
moments as they ripped on Tony, and then suddenly he was almost like he
was one of the guys again, sharing some insults. Another beer later, he
was shooting darts and then he wasn't even sure how it happened, but he
was suddenly involved in beer pong once the dart game ended.
He downed two more beers as part of the game, starting to really feel
it now and then looked around, realizing something didn't seem right.
He looked back, seeing Tony's hands on his hips, yet feeling nothing
and turned around getting twisted.
"You're not trying to take advantage of me, right?" snarled Alex,
pushing away from him. "And have we heard from Kayla yet?"
"No I'm not like that, Alex," said Tony, backing up. "I'll text again
now to Craig. I know they made it to the car. See."
"And isn't this a party?" said Alex, squinting to see the phone and
then looking around. "I just realized I'm still the only girl here?"
"Well just for now. Please don't be worried," said Tony, turning him
and looking into his eyes. "I got you, and they're just not here yet."
"Ok?" nodded Alex, almost falling forward into his arms. "Are we
winning or losing?"
"Losing, Dorothy," said one of Tony's buddies, handing him a funnel.
"Chug girl."
"Chug?" Alex questioned.
"Chug! Chug! Chug!" yelled the guys, as one stuffed the funnel in his
mouth.
"Dude, cut it," said Tony, pulling it away.
"You lose! You chug," yelled the guy. "You know the rules."
"Yeah, but she didn't!" yelled Ton,y pushing his buddy away.
"Oh? I think I actually did, but who the fuck knows?" said Alex,
extremely tipsy, putting the hose in his mouth.
Next thing he knew, his mouth was flooded with beer as he chugged the
best he could, and then the room soon spun uncontrollably. He was
holding onto Tony just not to fall down, and then could no longer
handle his liquor as Tony was clutching him tightly before he passed
out.
"Hey. Alex, let's head home, honey," said Kayla as she pulled open one
of his eyes as he felt her softly tapping his cheek. "Maybe you can
just carry her to the car please, if you wouldn't mind?"
"Sure, just let me maneuver a little," said Tony, moving a little. "My
arm fell asleep, but I didn't want to move her."
"Oh Hi Kayla," said Alex, looking up seeing her. "You're finally back."
"I was barely gone Alex, but it seems you were quite the party girl,"
said Kayla, softly touching his arm.
"Oh, my head," said Alex, lifting his arm and touching his head,
looking to his left and then realizing he was resting in Tony's arms.
"Oh shit. What happened?"
"Nothing happened," said Tony, lifting him into his arms.
"Whoohhh easy?" whined Alex, holding on, realizing he was lifted off
the couch and still felt a bit dizzy. "Nothing?"
"Relax, I'd never drop you Alex, or take advantage. You're awesome, and
I'm so glad we hooked up tonight," said Tony, carrying him out the
door. "Beer pong is what happened, and I shouldn't have let you chug. I
take the blame for that"
"For her getting stupid?" said Kayla, as he placed her in the passenger
side door. "I don't think so. She's not a little girl anymore? Or is
she?"
"I'm not, but..." moaned Alex, sitting back as Tony belted him in.
"But good night and I'll check on you tomorrow," said Tony, kissing
Alex's cheek and then closing the car door before talking to Kayla.
"Just text me that you guys made it home please, and that she's ok."
"Will do, and I can never thank you and Craig enough," said Kayla,
racing around to the other side and getting in.
"Good night."
